- mozzer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+49The email notification was cowardly and underhanded to say the least.
And this quote is almost comical: "We wanted to treat our employees with as much dignity and respect as possible,"
Your actions betray your words, Radioshack. - imdeanlabouty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+34That sucks. How are they supposed to steal ***** on the way out then?
- cbs31572, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35Don't come to work tomorrow.
TTYL...LOL
The Shack - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30Why would they treat their employees with respect? They don't bother treating their customers that way.
- Hoov, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28Want to hear something more ***** up?
At work, a bunch of guys were being let go (pretty sizeable group), but somebody screwed up bigtime and didn't bother telling them not to come into work the next day. Their badges were deactivated, so when these guys came in the next day thinking it was business as usual, they found it odd that they couldn't get into the building.
...then they got the news. - UncommonSense, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26If I worked for Radio Shack, I would quit via email. The only thing worse is quitting via MySpace.
- aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23This doesn't suprise me from the company that asks for my number, address, and e-mail address when I buy batteries.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24It's like middle school all over again. Breaking up with people on AIM. ***** Radio Shack.
- antron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18"shutter?"
No, it's shudder. As in you physically shudder at the thought. Shutter means to close; as in shuttering windows.
No wonder you got dumped. - Darthcactaur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11SUBJECT: Termination
Dear Valuable Employee,
You're services are no longer needed.
***ALSO IF YOU DON'T FORWARD THIS TO AS MANY FELLOW EMPLOYEES IN 23SECs, YOU'LL HAVE TERRIBLE LUCK FINDING A NEW JOB!!!!**** - Renuvian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I just want to know who the hell still shops at Radio Shack? Anyone? Anyone?
- iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@ViRaZ
You think that is such a good idea when they have your SSN and address, and everything else needed to know who you are in order to press charges? - zweben, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I buy my $5 cables there. That's about it.
I always get the feeling the guys are pissed off when I ask them a 20 part question about cables, and then end up spending less than ten bucks. - Agraek, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Yea. Not any more...
- DruidGwynneth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7What if they had accidentally sent that email to everyone at the company?
- Smukke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I used to work at a newspaper in NJ, and we were convinced that someday there would be a big layoff & the only notification we would get was when we tried to log into our computers, we would see, "ERROR: User no longer works here." E-mail is so much more personal & humanizing.
- lormahoykyd2007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Radio Shack was the ***** when we were in the up and coming computer age, actually having bought my TRS-80, CoCo, and the graphically superior Tandy 1000. However since Bob's Basement Computers and every other retailer that got in on the ground floor when the Computer Shopper was 11x13 and 2 inches thick, they lost their market share. That was of course due to the fact they did overprice everything in comparison. I live one block from a Radio Shack and 3 miles from a Fry's. Where do you think I shop. The layoffs are just the start. They'll be gone by the end of the decade.
- freshmaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6As a former 5-year Shack employee (who quit willingly for a MUCH better job), this sounds like a typical RadioShack move. The company doesn't understand anything about employee respect and I really hope it goes under soon. It's actually getting close to my theory of a 5 year breakdown that I thought of about 2 years ago. By 2009 RadioShack will no longer exist and the world will be a much better place.
- gadgetsguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6My fiancee got her notice via email, with no advance warning whatsoever, after a year of service with a major online company.
She was like "WHAT THE F@%$# ?!?", and when she called her boss to enquire, he put her on hold for 30 mins, and had his WEB DESIGNER message her on ICQ and tell her that her boss had told him that any questions she had were to go through him ...
And the real kicker is that she was to represent the company at a convention 2 days after she was terminated, and had put 100+ unclocked hours into her presentation, as well as paying for her business cards out of pocket (she did not like the drab cookie cutter cards the company had ...)
Just goes to prove in this new "better society" we live in, that loyalty does not mean sh!t anymore. Employees are 2 pesos a dozen in this new world economy! - Shipley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm about to celebrate 2 years being out of the shack. most stores suck, but I spent my first year in a store 90 miles from the district manager with a staff that knew exactly what we could get away with and for how long.
alcohol fuled inventories, playstation in the back room, "borrowing" items, and exchanging my own cell phone for newer models every couple weeks... oh yeah, I don't regret my time with the shack. I learned a lot about how to kick ass and not get caught. - texnofobix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Well you know someone had to be the first. I used to think Radio Shack was awesome, but now I think they just over price everything.
A few years ago, someone from upper management didn't like how my one friend a store manager was actually doing and accused him of stealing so he quit. - BlackCow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Radio shack is waaay over priced and they have crap there. Your much better off shopping online for that stuff. They dont even have electronic parts anymore (well they do but they are wicked expensive). I remember by dad telling me back in the day (lol) that he used to buy micro-chips and other neat little electronic parts for like insanely cheap.
- lowerlogic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6That would be 404. 403 is Forbidden - "403 - Forbidden to return to work"
- Corgana, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I used to work there too, got laid off in an equally idiotic way.
good thing I took $1000 worth of merchandise with me when I left.
of course, had it been WAL-MART it would only have been $500 worth. - shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7well i got dumped on *shutter* myspace if that is related in anyway.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5i feel sorry for those employees. "Respect" does not equal laying off employees using emails.
- TimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Radioshack is one of those businesses that was bound to go away with the advent of the web...most of the store is filled with odds and ends parts that people would rather buy on the web..they do cell phone sales....so does everyone else
they sell tvs...so does everyone else(betters ones and more selections)
honestly there is no reason to go a radioshack unless of course you are looking for odds and ends electronics and don't quite know what you're looking for then they could help you... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Radioshack used to be the place you went to when you needed the odd electronic bits and pieces for a project or around the home. Cheap-ish and quickly in and out. Now they're just a cell-phone / cell-phone plan clearing house that happens to have some other products to lure you into the store for their cell-phone pitch.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They charge $300 for a 4GB Mem Stick Pro Duo there.
I got one from newegg for $110.
Radioshack is stupid. I think they knew.
I talked to employees from 2 stores in the Dallas area, which is in Texas, where some of the Firing happened. They said Radioshack as a company isnt doing too well, and they will close many stores through Texas, including theirs. - TheBrandman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Error 403: Employee not found
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They charge $300 for a 4GB Mem Stick Pro Duo.
I got one in Newegg for $110 - nthitz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Nice Seinfeld reference.
- Buelldozer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I managed just such a store for a number of years. My employees loved me and not a one of them left while I was there. :-)
We made MONEY too. I did, the employees did and store did as well. We took an underperforming store and almost tripled it's yearly sales while almost quadrupling it's profitability.
I got railroaded out when a Senior Manager wanted my store so he could continue an affair he was having.
I was vindicated, the store dropped like a rock after I left. :) - DocDEB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Cheaper, greener and you don't have to personally face the layed off employee -- priceless. (This bit of Corporate Think brought to you by RadioShack)
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I worked at Radio Shack for 2 hours. It was that long before I discovered their ridiculous below-minimum-wage commission scheme (the hiring manager basically lied during my "interview" in the food court). I told them not to even pay me so I wouldn't have to do the taxes but of course they filed a W-2. Bastards.
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Jokes aside, if I worked for a company that did something like this, I'd be sending out resumes whether or not I was impacted by the layoffs. Who the hell would give a company like that any loyalty at all?
- Nerys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I got laid off when they closed my store (they only kept the part timers) I was (I hope) one of the exceptions. I am very knowledgable (a little about a lot) people came from miles to my store specifically (got quite annoying at time but I have this thing with helping people) its the only reason I keps such a low paying job. Not hard close to home etc.. (it was a second job for me so not life critical)
There are several things Radio Shack needs to learn to survive.
One start treating employee's like valuable assets and TRAIN the ***** out of them. I greased my "tests" but most employees could not pass half them tests if there lives depended on it (supervised ie no cheating) and or most of the tests are so abismally simple that there was no point in even having the test to begin with.
Second Customers are critical and empoyee's need to know this and WANT THIS if they can not FIRE them and hire new ones.
Radio Shack when RUN PROPERLY has one thing NO OTHER chain has. Employee's who actually have a brain on there shoulders and don't start drooling with an uhhhh coming from there mouth when you ask a question.
Radio Shack's pricing is no more out of line than any other major retailor. in fact many times they BEAT other major retailors (once again this is a customer problem IE smart shopping) With the exception of walmart I will go somewhere else if its a big enough price difference (I shop at walmart as an absolutel last resort)
They need to focus on the "gadget" stuff the "tinkering" stuff the odds and ends stuff that everyone else is abandoning. They can not ever compete with best buy or circuit city no matter how much they downsize or how manby employee's they fire. They simply do not have the capital. There are Best Buy's who bring in more cash in one day than dozens of radio shacks in a year. They simply can not compete on that level (yet they keep trying no wonder they are flopping)
Ehh - I liked working there. I hate the back stabbing (its really viscious !!!) that part is something I never could get used to. I was brought up to DO your job DO it well and go home happy. I walked into my job with a smile. I really did enjoy working there. I really like helping people. Being able to answere their questions and solve there problems. it gave me pleasure.
I was even "satisfied" with the abismall pay rate but ehh I guess that was not enough for them. - bobx86, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I've been hired by e-mail, why not fired?
- lcohiomatty86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2then i guess this world would be a better place afterall... except for those poor people out of a job
- SPLASTiK, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Boss Bill: Hey Peter
Peter: Hey Bill.
Bill: Uhm, yeahhh. What are you doing here?
Peter: Working?
Bill: Riiighttt... Didn't you get the e-mail?
Peter: What e-mail?
Bill: Uhm, yeahhh. We sent an e-mail out friday as we cleaned up a few people around the office.
Peter: I must not have received it, tubes must have been clogged. Cleaned up? - cybrjoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Job protection in 2006?
SPAM FILTER! - Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I'm sorry, did you just use the term "lamer"?
- G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4BFF?
The Shack - ArcusOfSV, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"I buy my $5 cables there. That's about it."
Oh you use 1" long 28 awg extension cords with no ends too? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3No, they can't help you. They know how to lie to you to sell a cell phone. When I was 5 I knew more about electronics than any Rat Shack employee (and I know Jack).
- icexe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i think they should concentrate on being just a bulk parts supplier. Most of the mom & pop compter stores where you could pick up stuff like case screws, fans, cables, adaptors, thermal paste, etc...have gone out of business. Radio Shack is in a great position to fill that void IMO. Leave the stereos, computers and phones to BB and CC.
- cwhill103, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think they got away from what made them a good company and started to sell the cell phones and other karp that supposedly made them money. They stopped being the go to electronics store when you could not find the part you needed. The internet makes up for that now and I think you may see this at alot of electronics store down the road where they get away from selling their expertise and lose the people that can help you when you need it the most.
- victorp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@Buelldozer
No they definately still do it, at least in my city in Canada - Kelmon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I seem to recall an legal company in the UK (read: Ambulance chasers) going bust and sending employment termination notices to some employees by SMS. Given what the company did I can't say that I shed a tear...
Anyway, email is so 80s. Presumably these days a cutting-edge termination notice should come in the form of a comment posted against the employees MySpace site or blog... - Nerys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1FYI so why do they keep the brain dead employee's ? first they usually are unaware and 2nd its hard to replace them. When you tell an educated trained person we want you to work for $3 an hour (now $5) after taxes they look at you like your some kind of alien freak.
