- chaoticz, on 02/22/2009, -0/+446Quicken just gave Mint free advertising....
- DiggieDarko, on 02/22/2009, -6/+273I guess I don't understand why Mint is compelled to answer this 'threatening letter' with anything except "thanks for contacting mint, now please f*ck off."
- troy1of2, on 02/22/2009, -1/+208I'm digging this for letting me know about Mint. I hadn't heard about this tool yet (guess I've been living under a rock) but now I want to try it out!
- mgraham80, on 02/22/2009, -2/+119I <3 Mint.
- inactive, on 02/22/2009, -2/+109This is a lesson for all. Don't let barriers to entry keep you from advancing with your business plan. Some companies (Intuit) aren't swift enough to recognize the shift and deserve to fall behind. Enter GM, Ford, and Chrysler comments here.
- CoD4, on 02/22/2009, -0/+86Protip: don't spend more than you make
- DefaultGen, on 02/22/2009, -0/+71I just went to Mint :)
- TheSabre, on 02/22/2009, -1/+65Mint should have answered "due to the sensitive nature of financial management, we cannot disclose what our users have signed up to do." They shouldn't have to define user. A user is someone who uses a system. If I use it simply for the free "ways to save" and don't link any accounts, I'm still a user. What I do within mint.com is of no concern to the folks at Quicken.
- griffeycom, on 02/22/2009, -0/+57I love Mint. It's a quick, easy, organized way to manage your finances and see where you're spending money. As a college student, this has helped me out a TON. Best of all, it is FREE!
- connieLingus, on 02/22/2009, -0/+56i'd make them create a new account before answering them.
- Jones82, on 02/22/2009, -1/+54This just hit the front page, which is going to be huge for mint... Quicken ***** up
- Fu22yLojik, on 02/22/2009, -4/+46I wish they had a Canadian site, it looks like a great tool.
- notepad, on 02/22/2009, -1/+43Yep... mint.com should have just replied with "mind your business beeeeooooch."
- k3rfuffl3, on 02/22/2009, -0/+41Yes... Now ***** off
- Klowner, on 02/22/2009, -3/+43You mean the same response I get from them for asking that they fix the URL for my bank's website?
- artey, on 02/22/2009, -1/+37...and now mint will gain even more traffic/users. wow!
- misconfig, on 02/22/2009, -0/+31I myself dropped my Quicken online account, mint.com is far superior with it's graphs and management tools; THANKS MINT!
- healingcommoner, on 02/22/2009, -4/+33Thanks Digg, alerting everyone to another great find!!!!
- Konrad9, on 02/22/2009, -1/+30I don't know if you've noticed, but Ford hasn't taken a penny in bailout funds. They're doing just fine.
GM and Chrysler, on the other hand, fit perfectly in to your analogy. - anagoge, on 02/22/2009, -0/+28I would totally use Mint. ...if I had any money.
- merm, on 02/22/2009, -1/+27Well, they turned it into an advertising opportunity and to show how stupid and out-of-touch their competitor Intuit is.
- BNSF9647, on 02/22/2009, -3/+27Its too bad each is missing something the other has.
Mint - unable to enter future transactions....to plan for a budget. What is the point of a budget if you only have past transactions...I want to know what to budget for in the future.
Quicken - Unable to split transactions. Since when was the last time you went to a store and only purchased one category of items??? If you really want to budget, you need to finely sort out all of the different budget items.
Right now I am using both...keeping both up to date....so when one actually completes their product, I canquite using the other one. Mint has nicer reporting.....neither have very good customer service. Time will tell I guess. - inactive, on 02/22/2009, -0/+23Me too. Digging up for same reason, and going to add to their user base today!
- wild, on 02/22/2009, -1/+22I like the response from Quicken...which is really just a PR advert.
Never heard of Mint.com, but on my way to check it out... - roxgod666, on 02/22/2009, -1/+22Wow, this works great. I'm never using Quicken again.
- Qumahlin, on 02/22/2009, -0/+21Thats a requirement of any of these online money management portals. You don't need to link it to your account, but it defeats most of the functionality if you don't.
Quite frankly I feel safer about giving my info to Mint than to PayPal which tons of people do daily. - smacksaw, on 02/22/2009, -3/+23"We're sorry for Mint.com Satanically molesting children. We just wanted to know if they did. Now, let me talk about Quicken Online for the next 200 words."
- adikt, on 02/22/2009, -0/+19Mint can add me as +1 subscribers. Thanks for bitching and moaning, Intuit, you just gave Mint a new subscriber that otherwise would have NEVER known about them.
- FuZi0nDET, on 02/22/2009, -0/+18Just signed up, thanks for the heads up Quicken!
- planck0, on 02/22/2009, -1/+17Curses.. I literally just bought Quicken 2009 this past week. Haven't opened it yet, though, hopefully I can return it.
- wassim2k, on 02/22/2009, -0/+14Quicken: Hey buddy, why are you so popular and everyone wants to hang out with you?
Everyone: Hmm I better check out this popular Mint thing to see what it's all about. Oh cool, goodbye Quicken! - igyigyigy, on 02/22/2009, -1/+15That works great until you decide you want to own a house :)
- AstroDomine, on 02/22/2009, -0/+13They do not have services with Canadian banks
- digitaljc, on 02/22/2009, -3/+16I just sent the following feedback to Quicken via their website:
Your letter to Mint has introduced me to the product I would not otherwise have been aware of. Thank you!
heh... - MrFurious2k, on 02/22/2009, -0/+12Thanks to Intuit's DRM schemes, increasing costs, and various ass-hattery, I actually decided to check Mint out. I was freaking stunned how good it was. I'm now using (and loving) Mint.
- Qumahlin, on 02/22/2009, -0/+12Typically it's easier just to hack someones email account. 99% of the time that will be enough to get access to all of the things you mentioned above and more.
- thebaron2, on 02/22/2009, -1/+13When you make claims in advertising, you can be easily compelled to substantiate those claims.
Mint could have forced Intuit to draft some legal requests instead of an informal letter from their lawyer, but they probably figured that just answering the question would save a lot of hassle and headache.
Plus you don't want to burn bridges in business. Although these two companies are competitors now, that may change in the future. Maybe Intuit purchases Mint... maybe they partner up for online offerings... who knows? - TheSabre, on 02/22/2009, -0/+12@dusanmal, how is that any different than your actual bank using your financial information to upsell/advertise to you? I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that advertising is not a bad thing; Mint uses advertising to actually provide you with information that you can use. For example, it will say "here are 3 credit cards from 3 different companies, based on your spending trends, we feel that this Chase card will provide you with the most benefit" and it breaks down how, tailored specifically to your spending. If you buy a lot of electronics, you might get an ad for a Visa card with cash back on electronics purchases.
Mint's advertising is not intrusive, is not deceptive and is very helpful. That's what makes Mint better than other online money management tools. - j0rd0n420, on 02/22/2009, -0/+12Then maybe you should have used the reply link (button?). I'm not sure what to call it, buts it there!
- BadAndy80, on 02/22/2009, -1/+12Dude. Return it. It's buggy as hell. Just keep your register on a spreadsheet for balancing until Mint comes out with manual transactions.
- spunkmyer, on 02/22/2009, -6/+17ok here is the paranoid question. Mint wants everything from you including your bank account login plus account password.
You guys cool with giving that to them? - azbmr, on 02/22/2009, -0/+11If you understand the "Internet user" then you'll understand why people bury you.
- Hraes, on 02/22/2009, -0/+10Ford actually has an international market...
- diggapleeeze, on 02/22/2009, -0/+10That's not how Mint makes money. And there is no identifiable information in your account to point it back to you.
- DirtyVicar, on 02/22/2009, -2/+12Yeah, I'm about to look at Mint's wikipedia page.
- jellehenkens, on 02/22/2009, -1/+10Why are all these cool web 2.0 personal finance web application US only? I want mint.com to support EUROPE!!
- diggapleeeze, on 02/22/2009, -0/+9Even better with the iPhone app if you have the iPhone or iPod touch.
- decapitor, on 02/22/2009, -1/+10Yeah I'd heard a bit about Mint but now I just signed up and put all my accounts on there. It's pretty awesome. Thanks quicken.
- mugwumpz, on 02/22/2009, -0/+8*****, *****, roly-poly *****...*****, *****, eat 'em up, yummm. Intuit is ANOTHER of those dinosaur companies whose business model is slipping between their fingers. Instead of getting a clue, innovating and beating the competitors...they try stupid crap like this? Remind me of Real.com, Symantec, Radio Shack, the RIAA and so many others. Just keep wasting away into obscurity, people!
- starf1re, on 02/22/2009, -0/+8Paypal don't need no stinking username for your account. They pretty much own it. They can take as much as they want from you whenever they want.
