- jedmed, on 03/31/2008, -5/+166Credit where credits due. Thanks, folks.
- Flashtone, on 03/31/2008, -6/+94I think FEMA is still trying to locate where the hurricane actually took place.
- mcbutterbuns, on 03/31/2008, -4/+78Isn't this how America should work? We shouldn't always depend solely on our government to fix all of our problems. Americans need to be able to help each other. Not saying that government authorities need to be disbanded but I think we should all be willing to make sacrifices for the good of the nation. Or maybe thats just too high of an ideal?
- chanop, on 03/31/2008, -7/+81Walmart loves black people
- benjipenguin, on 03/31/2008, -8/+80It's always important to remember and acknowledge the heart in these companies... not all of them are completely evil :)
- Swarms, on 03/31/2008, -4/+68They also employ, directly or indirectly, over 2 million people.
- dreicher, on 03/31/2008, -8/+62Dugg for sanctioned use a driving a bulldozer through a Wal-Mart.
- scy1192, on 03/31/2008, -16/+63oh no! walmart! buryburybury
- inactive, on 03/31/2008, -19/+61Reason #5,132 why the private sector always triumphs over the so-called public sector. And people still want to put our health care in the hands of the mindless bureaucracy that is the US government..it truly boggles the mind.
- Shaman760, on 03/31/2008, -7/+44The Federal gov't PWNED by Wal-Mart. GO figure.
- tak84, on 03/31/2008, -7/+41But isn't bigger government the answer in big national problems like this?? I guess that's another +1 for the private sector...
- ileftfark, on 03/31/2008, -3/+36Really, it was individuals who worked at different Walmarts in the affected areas that were the true heroes. Kudos to those unsung people who risked life and limb to help others. Many of these people will never be acknowledged, but for the few that were there (I wasn't one of them), they were ***** Superman.
- diavolina, on 03/31/2008, -1/+33i can vouch for this article.. i live in south mississippi and my home was destroyed during the hurricane. the local wal-mart was one of the first business back up and running in a matter of days. they helped us more than they will ever know.
- Hortnon, on 03/31/2008, -4/+35They started me at $10/hr when I was 16 with no work experience. That was 7 years ago, which included 4 years in the military. They kept my job open even though they didn't have to (I enlisted normally, wasn't "called up" or anything), and I just got info on the 401k they gave me that I didn't remember signing up for...at 16. I have nothing negative to say about my 3+ years of active employment there.
- tak84, on 03/31/2008, -12/+40Butbutbut... What about the REAL cost of everyday low prices?
- SasquatchBill, on 03/31/2008, -5/+32I'd be interested to see what Target's response was, as they are often touted for their great community relations. They weren't even mentioned in this article.
- tricks574, on 03/31/2008, -3/+28Kudos to Wal-Mart.
- justinx0r, on 03/31/2008, -5/+27But I thought that private entities wouldn't help people out unless the government forces them or takes their money? Oh wait, this is Digg.
- supermanred, on 03/31/2008, -7/+26Can't they do any good without someone pointing out that they are doing it to "look good"?
Give them a break, man. If it wasn't for Walmart's low prices, the poor of America would be worse off than they are now. They have pushed almost every industry to lower their costs in order to fulfill Walmart price points and order levels.
I mean, yes they have done evil but you can't be a dummy and stick your fingers in your ears and cover your eyes when they do something good.
The true jackass here is the US government for not helping its own people and instead wasting its military and money on invading Iraq.
200,000 troops and 3 trillion dollars could possibly have converted the disaster zone into America's Dubai. - skipdog172, on 03/31/2008, -3/+20I am sorry but Wal-Mart creates HUGE opportunity for people of this country and it DOES NOT take unions. Nobody deserves to be making huge wages at a no-skill job. Work at wal-mart and you get paid enough to have kids, have a car have a house. Why anybody would think that no-skill employees should be making more is beyond me.
- shaka999, on 03/31/2008, -3/+20By your logic its nearly impossible to do good.
If I help someone and it makes me feel good then I'm just being self serving and thus I'm not really good. - theshizzler, on 03/31/2008, -2/+18As if I needed an excuse to smear feces on my monitor...
- gtluke, on 03/31/2008, -8/+23world's best company
- Swarms, on 03/31/2008, -3/+18I'm shocked. I was expecting to be buried into oblivion for supporting Wal-Mart. Figured the replies would be filled with people complaing about low wages and benefits. The fact is, it is a no skill job, and they pay better than most no-skill jobs out there. You are not going to make $50k+/year for doing a job any high school dropout can do.
- mburner21, on 03/31/2008, -1/+15Like the article said this isn't really that surprising. Although its nice to hear it, we shouldn't just view this as an isolated, lets-all-get-together-and-hug moment of unity. It really just demonstrates the basic truth that organizations operating for profit will inherently behave (or in this case possess the infrastructure) more efficiently than organizations without that incentive.
- queotic, on 03/31/2008, -3/+17Even if that's true, so what? I'd rather be saved by Walmart than left to die by the American govt.
- Flashtone, on 03/31/2008, -6/+20Pen and Teller on that!
- ecsmith, on 03/31/2008, -3/+17No, that would be Oprah Winfrey.
- RlAA, on 03/31/2008, -3/+16YEAH!!! Get him!!
*slips away* - biw314, on 03/31/2008, -3/+16My kids were well covered under Wal-Mart insurance for a time.
- icantdenythis, on 03/31/2008, -2/+14I hate going there, but props to them.
- BNash577, on 03/31/2008, -2/+14Penn and Teller's ***** (The Showtime Series) has a great episode on Wal-Mart. I advise everyone to watch it, whether you love Wal-Mart or hate it.
p.s. it's available on netflix for instant viewing, season 5, episode 2. - imolaavant, on 03/31/2008, -3/+15So much for needing government to steal our money in the name of the downtrodden.
- sdubois92, on 03/31/2008, -3/+15a prime example of the free market working to help other people.
- supermanred, on 03/31/2008, -1/+13They may have helped, but from the news stories I saw the first responders were Walmart, setting up a tent selling items at cost just a few days in
- inactive, on 03/31/2008, -2/+13wtf does PETA have to do with anything?
- tak84, on 03/31/2008, -1/+12So... Walmart should have not helped these people because they might appreciate it and show their gratitude toward the business by becoming customers? I guess I don't see what's wrong with that. If someone were to do me a favor I would obviously try to help them out in whatever capacity I could.
- Bossy, on 03/31/2008, -9/+20nah, I prefer my taxes to be high and the government to make everything better for me!
GO OBAMA!! WOOT! - coheedcollapse, on 03/31/2008, -1/+12I bury PETA stories because they're a bunch of hypocritical, lying, trendy *****. Most of the people in the organization mindlessly recite and regurgitate the same random crap every time they catch someone eating meat in front of them. it reminds me of a damn religious organization. I have nothing against vegetarians/vegans. I know that meat can be bad for me (and apparently digg does too according to the front page article about how processed meat causes cancer). I'm just sick of the idiots at PETA. That is why I bury PETA-related crap.
Stop pretending you're so high and mighty ("They don't like it because it makes them feel guilty") compared to the rest of us and maybe we'll listen to you for a second. - jcastillo81, on 03/31/2008, -9/+20You hear that? That's the sound of millions of liberal minds exploding.
- inactive, on 03/31/2008, -2/+12and people want this government to run your health care. freaking liberals...
- yoshman, on 03/31/2008, -0/+10http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7826545695 ...
- gta3mobster, on 03/31/2008, -3/+13I doubt this will make the TV news.
Kinda funny... CNN was running a story about a walmart employee being crippled in a car accident. Her husband sued the trucking company for millions and walmart wanted the money back they had to pay for hospital bills (which was legal, supreme court ruled in walmart's favor). CNN was making walmart out to be the devil (what's auto insurance for anyway... why did walmart have to pay the medical bills?). It's good to see a large company get some positive recognition. - insertAliasHere, on 03/31/2008, -2/+11Of course they got a huge write off. Does it matter? Wouldn't you get a tax write off if you made charitable donations? Why can't you accept that this was a genuinely good thing to do, and even if they gained some good PR and some tax benefits, they still helped a lot of people in need and did some really good things. The people running the show are still people, what makes you think that they are incapable of doing good without reward? But everyone wants to believe in the evil image of the corporate satan, wal-mart.
- CorpT, on 03/31/2008, -1/+10Why does it matter if I benefit from doing something good for someone else? Everything I do is for my own benefit. But even if it is, why can't that be good for someone else?
- sanotaan, on 03/31/2008, -1/+10finalfantasyIII is truly evil.
- manova, on 03/31/2008, -1/+10There just are not many Target's down there. If memory serves me right, I do not think there is a Target on the Mississippi gulf coast and there are only a couple in the New Orleans area.
- godd4242, on 03/31/2008, -3/+12Christ, of course the national post had to make this into a goddamn Democrat vs Republican issue...
- rnwen2750, on 03/31/2008, -1/+10Wal-Mart routinely empties out Southern warehouses during the summer and turns them into massive storehouses for ice. When storms (like Katrina) hit, they are often the first trucks in and the last trucks out of areas that desperately need fresh water.
- Petrarch1603, on 03/31/2008, -2/+11do you have a source? no, of course not!
