- darnok45, on 03/28/2008, -30/+647why are people still shopping at best buy?
- Walker2323, on 03/28/2008, -28/+472Oh, Best Buy! You and your wacky, Gestapo tactics!
- HappyScrappy, on 03/28/2008, -46/+373As stupid as it the manager's reasons might be, when he (or she) asks you to leave and you don't, you're trespassing.
- inactive, on 03/28/2008, -34/+267Inaccurate, Alex refused to leave the store when asked. That is trespassing.
FTA: "A sales associate overheard this and told the manager, who asked Alex to leave the store, then threatened to call the police, then did." - Dtopler, on 03/28/2008, -31/+234LOL, I work at the Princeton, NJ store part-time, and Tom used to be our manager. He was a cool guy, and I wouldn't expect this from him at ALL. He never did anything irrational like this towards customers, and I never saw him ever treat a customer with anything less then respect. It makes me wonder if the full story is being told. Just putting it out there...
- inactive, on 03/28/2008, -25/+207Of course it's not the full story, this is digg, the place where Ron Paul was almost the next president.
- pianomahnn, on 03/28/2008, -13/+189I know it's hard to imagine, but sometimes it's more convenient to "get it now" rather then "get it in a few days" from the internet.
- SarahSilverman, on 03/28/2008, -18/+192Big mistake by Best Buy manager. He should have called Homeland Security & JTTF and proclaimed that the tipper was "terrorizing" customers. You have to use the words, "terror", "terrorist", "terrorizing" and variants thereof. Forget your loacal para-military cops; they are the bottom of the barrel in the Homeland Security power structure.
- deviouskoopa, on 03/28/2008, -8/+141Many people have no idea what newegg is... unfortunately :(
- piper999, on 03/28/2008, -15/+110If the day comes when a store sees its customers as trespassers then that store should be closed for good.
- bigdoof, on 03/28/2008, -19/+108Not to be a downer here, but Best Buy is private property, and moreover, private property aimed at making its owner money. If you cost them business and they ask you to leave, it is completely within their right to do so. Bad for customer service? Yes, for sure. Out of line? Not really.
- akatherder, on 03/28/2008, -21/+105The headline is incorrect. They didn't call the police because the customer pointed out the headset is overpriced. They called the police because the customer wouldn't leave when requested. That's comparable to a headline of "Walk into Best Buy? Best Buy calls police!".
- sonstone, on 03/28/2008, -8/+77I don't think anyone is arguing that. I think the argument is that this is an absurd company policy and not a place where you want to do business. It's important to get stories like this out so that the public is informed about where they are sending their money.
- aockey, on 03/28/2008, -6/+75Don't you see the name of the place? It's not Good Buy, or Better Buy. It's BEST Buy. It HAS to be the best!
I guess until someone opens Bestest Buy, or More Gooder Buy the suckers will continue to flock there. - joebaloney, on 03/28/2008, -15/+82Really? So if I'm black and the Best Buy manager doesn't like "my kind" shopping in his store, he only has to ask me to leave and I'm a criminal if I don't?
- reed311, on 03/28/2008, -7/+73Yeah, some of the stories on that site are absurd. Half the time it's the customers fault and they are usually looking for some type of compensation.
- Chompy, on 03/28/2008, -10/+68Does your manager know that you're posting on Digg instead of hawking service plans?
- catachip, on 03/28/2008, -18/+71This story is suspicious. I'm not sure I buy it. The guy was probably ranting and raving loudly (so loud, in fact, that a service clerk hear him). He also probably made some comment to the clerk before walking away or refusing the leave the store. People have a hard time "remembering" all the facts.
- headzoo, on 03/28/2008, -4/+56Was the manager being a dick head? Yes. Was he within his rights to ask Alex to leave? Yes. Was he within his rights to call the police when Alex refused to leave? Yes.
The moral of the story: If you think a manager is being a dick, then take it up with his supervisors in the appropriate manner. Don't tell the manager to shove his policies up his ass, then glue you feet to the floor like a child, and then complain when the cops are called. - JRHodes88, on 03/28/2008, -1/+45Next time i go to Best Buy I am going to stand in the Monster Cable section and tell everyone that a straightened clothes hanger works just as good
- madk, on 03/28/2008, -19/+62I'm beginning to hate The Consumerist more and more each day.
- sdub74, on 03/28/2008, -4/+41How is a desire to have a product immediately a problem with society? You do realize that before Al Gore invented the internet, everyone went to a brick and mortar to buy products.
- Grimee, on 03/28/2008, -5/+41I know alot of folks despise Best Buy and for good reason. However, I've never had any problems with them whatsoever. I was even able to return a 46" LCD TV, that had a single dead pixel, with no questions asked. They just brought out a new one and loaded it up in my SUV and off I went.
I'm not saying that they're a perfect store and that their management style doesn't suck the skin off a dead dog's dick. But, I still shop there because they're not treating me or anyone else I know, like *****. Plus, they're close to my house. - DanMiller, on 03/28/2008, -10/+46Yes, you can be a racist shop owner. Obviously this would destroy buisness so not such a good idea. The patron could also possibly sue for damages as a result of embarrasment or harrasment based on their race but the actual act of throwing someone out of your store is not an illegal act. Just look at it as your house. If you hate black people you can tell them to stay out of your house all you want. Now, if Best Buy recieves any form of government subsidy then you have an argument.
- DanMiller, on 03/28/2008, -9/+41if you are asked to leave private property and you refuse by definition you are trespassing. Don't know what else to say. They could have kicked him out for wearing blue shoes. It's stupid but it's a fact.
- Double0Doug, on 03/28/2008, -4/+35It’s legit, but it really is just a place for sore consumers to bitch about problems and poor customer service. They have brought to light some wacky goings on, but they really just fan the flames rather than help someone resolve a problem.
Regardless… it is inexpensive entertainment. - deslock, on 03/28/2008, -11/+41LOL, I'll bet all the "trespassing" comments below are being submitted from Best Buy stores all across America. Way to spend a slow Friday morning at work, eh?
Digg me down ye blue shirt army! - Flummoxer, on 03/28/2008, -6/+36Purchasing something from a brick and mortar retailer is in no way one of societies ills. For one, it is much more convenient to return a defective product to a physical location then it is to ship it back.
- TheG2, on 03/28/2008, -22/+51Consumerist strikes again trying to blow things out of proportion. When he refused to leave the store at the store managers request, he was then Trespassing, which you can call the police for. Besides complaining to the BBB about shady practices of over charging, BestBuy did exactly what any person would do at their own household.
- Envark, on 03/28/2008, -3/+31I do the same thing at abortion clinics.
- ricksite, on 03/28/2008, -3/+31Alex also seems to be pretty intent on getting a large gift card from Best Buy.
- MacEnvy, on 03/28/2008, -1/+29Your netadmins suck.
- inactive, on 03/28/2008, -6/+33I am amazed at the number of people who think it's no problem for a store to treat them like *****. What kind of low self esteem problems do these sheep have?
- gametavern, on 03/28/2008, -20/+47Because it's a good store and Fry's is too far away. I'm sure as ***** not going to Circuit City.
- Double0Doug, on 03/28/2008, -3/+29It’s a thin line sometimes, but I’d bet the police were pretty pissed that they had to break away from Dunkin Donuts for such petty *****.
- brstilson, on 03/28/2008, -3/+28Because things like this don't happen to 99.99999999999999999999% of the people who shop there?
- ariGme, on 03/28/2008, -4/+28I work for a local computer shop too....but if Best Buy(or Newegg) employees walked in and pointed out all your overpriced gear and offered people alternatives by leaving brochures all over your store my guess is you wouldn't appreciate it.
The employees really don't get a choice on the prices Best Buy marks on stuff either.
I'm gonna say this story is sensationalism at its best. - bigdoof, on 03/28/2008, -6/+30People shop at Best Buy for the same reason that you probably go to Barnes and Noble. For some people, convenience and "browsing" is worth a price premium.
- Jako, on 03/28/2008, -6/+28ya, that site is filled with a bunch of whinny little bitches
- matthewf01, on 03/28/2008, -1/+22boooo....
- doctechnical, on 03/28/2008, -1/+21I've never had bad experiences at Best Buy, and I kinda feel sorry for the people that work there (a cashier was trying desperately to sell me the extended warranty on a $20 CD player, and she told me I had to refuse 3 time before she was allowed to stop the pitch. Poor kid).
One thing they (and other eletronci stores) do is charge unholy prices for things like USB cables. Your auntie Clara buys a new printer for a song, she's going to need a cable, right? Here you go, Ma'am, let me help take that to the register. And Auntie Clara pays THIRTY BUCKS for a friggin' USB cable! Just raping her because she's not tech-savvy and doesn't know it's only worth a buck or two.
Bastards! - reed311, on 03/28/2008, -5/+24That's pretty cool that you think that right to trespass is in one of the amendments.
- Dtopler, on 03/28/2008, -2/+20Looks like a stock photo to me. My former manager, Tom, transferred to East Brunswick appx. 6 months ago. No, I'm not 100% sure its him, and not another Tom, but I'd say the chances are pretty good that out of ~5 managers at one store, only one of them is named Tom.
- Jako, on 03/28/2008, -2/+20touche
- insertAliasHere, on 03/28/2008, -6/+24All the things that Best Buy does wrong doesn't make you any less of a tool for going into _their place of business_ and trying to steal their customers. Go advertise that you are better than them, or anything. But how would you like it if a geek squad employee came to your shop and started leaving best buy coupons and directions to the nearest best buy all over your place?
Best Buy sucks, but you suck too. - JRHodes88, on 03/28/2008, -2/+19Because they have the cheapest Monster Cables!
^sarc - BobMysterioso, on 03/28/2008, -0/+17Actually, spending all of your money at an out of state / non local location does hurt the local economy. In this way Best Buy, does help the area it is in via tax revenue (assuming you have state/city tax). I do like your noncommittal point of view though. You're almost saying its a problem, but not quite committing to any one solid stance. You must work in management.
- loopis, on 03/28/2008, -2/+19View at Best Buy so you can touch it and make sure it is good make your purchase online. Screw Best Buy.
- piper999, on 03/28/2008, -4/+20My ex father in law (60 years old, nice as pie) once had a Best Buy manager literally screaming that she felt threatened by him and was going to have him arrested. It was so bizarre everyone including all the Best Buy staff in earshot just went silent and stared at her. She then carried on as if nothing happened and what was truly bizarre is that my ex father in law had Best Buy customer service on his cell phone while it happened who told him that they would make sure no police action would take place and were literally apologizing for the stupid bitch's behaviour as it was actually taking place. She kept refusing to even talk to the Best Buy people on the phone.
Worst incident I've ever seen in a store and it makes me angry to this day that the Best Buy manager could have had my father in law arrested for NOTHING just because she felt she was so important that she couldn't be seen to lose face and back down in front of her staff.
I've never shopped there since. - flipzmode, on 03/28/2008, -12/+28I'll admit that I didn't read the whole thing because I know that on consumerist we only get one side of the story, but I just need to add that this person says they walked in to bestbuy at 9pm on March 5 2008. That's a Wednesday and bestbuy actually closes at 9pm during the week. So you have a customer who is there after close (likely long after by the time he has struck up a conversation with another shopper blah blah) and probably starts to make a scene. At this point most employees have left the store and there were probably only 2-3 people including the manager. Maybe they felt threatened? That guy is an ***** for walking in at closing time anyways, I hate people who do that.
