- MercedRocks, on 10/11/2007, -2/+99Hmm, remind me to never get the "meat lovers special" there. :)
- strikezero, on 10/11/2007, -14/+47The employee basically back stabbed her employer, if they set up the traps then that shows they where doing something about the problem. She called the government on the employers ass just to ***** him over.
think about it. - Klinky, on 10/11/2007, -1/+28If it wasn't a problem then why would the county health inspector close the restaurant down? Dead mice may very well be a health violation. Finding 6 probably means the restaurant has more of them somewhere and has not done much to fix the problem. The restaurant was acting outside of the law. The employee was acting inside the law & I thank her for reporting a health violation, it makes for a safer place to eat. Also a grade of 90.0 looks to be just barely making the grade for "sanitary".
Now here is the Wake County Health Department website for food inspections:
http://wake.digitalhealthdepartment.com/reports.cfm?start=121&q=alpha&a=P&
Maybe someone can find the specific report for this pizza hut. Then we'll see what other problems this store had. - CiXeL, on 10/11/2007, -0/+24heh i bought 3 pizzas at the dominos pizza down the street here in north miami beach and as i was paying for them they had the bill for the rodent exterminator right there on the counter as i was paying.
tacky tacky
of course theres all sorts of blatant health violations down here in miami. theres a chinese food restaurant right down the street on 41st that leaves their produce out to dry in the alley once a week in a bucket right under a telephone pole with pidgeons walking around.
the best part is it doesnt matter if you report the health code violation. no one cares! gotta love miami. - combatchuck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+23I have exactly as much loyalty to my employer as they have to me. That is, none. If I do something wrong, I'm gone. So ***** 'em. There are very few companies that actually value their employees, and I see nothing wrong with not respecting your employer.
- willis245, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20I worked for Pizza Hut (several different locations, not this one) for almost 10 years.
It is amazing what you can get away with and still get a 90 on a health inspection.
I've seen people fired for much less. - trer, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20Rats are definitely bad, but when you've got Ninja Turtles sneaking around the pizza oven then you've got a real pest problem.
- ScrewedThePooch, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16Hell, if I found rats running around and I was getting paid minimum wage at a dead end job, I'd call the health inspector also. I applaud this employee for standing up and trying to protect the customers from eating rat *****. Pizza Hut is horrid for firing an employee trying to protect the consumers.
I'd probably also tell the customers in person, since I'd likely be quitting after seeing that ***** anyway. - totallyAMAZING, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16Every restaurant has a mouse or roach hanging out somewhere, you're in denial if you think otherwise. Health codes establish limits to keep things sanitary and safe, but they aren't as strict as to say "no mice anywhere or you're closed."
- merreborn, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13"Why not allow the paid contractor to alleviate the rodent problem prior to getting government involved again?"
I agree, she could have given the store a week or two to deal with the issue. However, 6 mice caught overnight is a really bad sign. As is finding mouse feces in the store. We had traps at the store I worked at, but I never once saw mouse droppings or mice anywhere. This store was obviously in far worse condition. And again, the health inspector shut down the store, so this was obviously a pretty serious problem.
Regardless, it's illegal and immoral to fire a whistle-blower. She's got a very strong retaliatory termination case. When you report issues to the government, you're protected by law from being singled out like this.
"Hell, the store got a 90 (A) even with the presence of the droppings behind an icemaker"
I worked for a Pizza Hut in CA for a year. I never heard of anyone getting anything under a 90, even though a lot of the stores were *****-holes. Think about it -- this is Pizza Hut grading itself. If you got to grade your own tests in school, you'd have given yourself an A on everything too, wouldn't you? - lolcat77, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Dead end job?
I think you mean "a job that is stimulating, rewarding ... and offers skills that last a lifetime." - CaveMike, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Sure you can. NC is a right-to-hire / right-to-fire state. You don't need a reason to terminate someone in NC unless the employee had an employment agreement.
- kiwimonk, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11Mice are the only ingredient they can guarantee fresh
- mrballcb, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&ned=&q=pizza+hut+north+carolina&btnG=Search+News
And quoting one of the articles shows that it was an ongoing problem that management was *NOT* handling properly:
On Tuesday, the Pizza Hut employee who notified the health department told WRAL she was fired after the incident. The claimed firing of the employee has raised questions as to whistleblower laws which may protect the employee's rights in the given situation.
However, the employee stated she has no regrets and was fired because she refused to clean the kitchen area, citing her discomfort regarding the situation with the mice. In addition, the employee said mice have not only been seen by workers for the past few weeks, but also by restaurant patrons who pointed out the problem to the employees several times recently. - merreborn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Actually, Pizza Hut's cheese is really watered down with "stabilizers" and fillers and crap. Try something with real, unadulterated mozzarella on it. It's got so much more flavor.
- anachronaut, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6@ VeganG
It *is* deep fried. Have you ever seen how much of that slimy goop (some form of shortening or extremely viscous oil) that they squirt out into the bottom of a pizza pan? It makes me nauseous and causes me to shudder just thinking about it. I actually watched a pizza being made there once, and that immediately cured me of any desire to ever consume any of their products again in my lifetime.
It's not pizza, it's poison. And it doesn't even taste good, either. The overwhelming success of "restaurants" like Pizza Hut and McDonald's is just beyond my comprehension. It's like Americans have a death wish and want to consume mass quantities of extremely low-quality, crappy-tasting "food" to accomplish their goal. I'll never understand it as long as I live. - LostOnion, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5@merreborn: I think you are mistaken. The score that they referring to is the health inspector's score, not Pizza Hut's score.
- bgii2000, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I work for Pizza Hut (I'm a driver) and I've got to say, after working there, I'm MORE reassured that the food I'm eating is clean and fresh. I've watched employees at other restaurants in town wipe their nose or sneeze on gloved hands and then continue to work. I've seen them drop food on the floor, pick it up, and add it to my meal, right in front of me. At Pizza Hut (well, the Pizza I work for anyway) all ingredients are fresh that day. If they aren't used, they're thrown out. If they aren't the right temperature, they're thrown out. If some one drops something, it's thrown out. Hell, if a crust has a crack it it, it's thrown out. And I'll be damned if I've ever seen someone sneeze on anything.
It would be easy for mice to get in though. The back door is usually left open during business hours. However, they'd be hard-pressed to find anything to eat once they were inside; it's all in the fridge. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Someone Talked!!!!
- FortyCaliber, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Although there are "whistleblower" laws that prevent firings when in retaliation to an employee reporting something unsafe or illegal, this Pizza Hut had simply not cleared the traps yet. It is unreasonable to assume that they hire someone to keep a minute-by minute watch on the glue trap. They likely fired her in response to her being a pain in the ass.
And you CAN fire someone anytime you want for anything (aside from legal restrictions. i.e. whistleblower or 1st amendment violations.) Unless you are under a contract position with specific terms, you are considered "AT WILL" and may be terminated at anytime for any reason. Likewise, you may quit at any time for any reason.
You wouldn't think it was fair if you tried to quit and they told you "NO. No you may not quit... you MUST work here." Why should it be fair the other way around? - merreborn, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5"If I were the owner of that Pizza Hut I would've fired their ass too."
You'd have a retaliatory termination suit on you in no time.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whistleblower#Legal_protection_for_whistleblowers - VeganG, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Pizza Hut pizza is practically deep fried. I'm sorry, but the bottom of your pizza crust should not look like that.
- idonthack, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I like how Pizza Hut's products start look like they're made of plastic if you let them sit on the counter for an hour.
Thankfully, my local independent pizza place makes the tastiest pizza ever, and it keeps well. - spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3"Pizza Hutt is bad enough here in NZ, but at least it's slightly edible."
Watch what you say, or else pizza's gonna send out for you! - Klinky, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3For all we know the health inspector may have told the employees to report any health violations such as "if x amount of mice show up, contact me". If you're following the request of a government health inspectors request I don't see how she could be fired within reason. If those 6 mice had been scurrying around when the health inspecter WAS there he would have shut the store down. Just because the mice were scurrying around when he was not there doesn't mean the store is sanitary.
Also companies will doddle forever, filing a complaint will net you a "we're working on it" response over and over again. Again the concern was valid, the only thing we do know is that there were at least six mice running around and pooping in this Pizza Hut for who knows how long, which cannot be sanitary. Hiring the cheapest pest inspector you can find to put out glue traps while your employees work around dead mice is not "solving" the problem. To truely get rid of the mice the place should be shutdown while an evaluation as to why the mice are there is done. - josegutz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Hey....I still want one of those Pizza Hut Hats...They look DOPE!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Caller: "Yeah, I'll have a large pepperoni and mouse, hold the droppings."
Employee: "Okay. We're running a coupon special right now. Order two large pizzas and you get an order of breaded rat tails."
Caller: "Sounds good to me." - finbec, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Ha, ha! I was thinking the same thing when I noticed your comment. I dug you up, but I think most of the kids on Digg are too young to catch the Spaceballs reference.
- MiamiBwoy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2at least the rats weren't running around the dining room like that KFC in NY.
I think it sends a bad signal though that they fired her for being a whistleblower but I guess she could have at least waited for the exterminator to come back and collect the traps. unless there were more mice running around the prep area or something. - Tourney3p0, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4For external whistleblowing to be justified, a few criteria has to be met. One of the requirements is that all internal means of addressing the problem had to have been exhausted, which clearly was not the case here. In fact, the problem arose while the company was trying to deal with it internally, which by definition means that all internal attempts of problem rectification had not yet been exhausted.
This alone is why she'll have no case whatsoever if she tries to pursue a wrongful termination suit. - Nougat, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4"A spokesman at Pizza Hut's corporate office says he expects the restaurant to reopen Wednesday."
Because two days is plenty to make sure all the mice are gone. - SirGunslinger, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3You went over my HELMET!
- cuoops, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I've done work in many fast food restaurants. The chicken places beats all them for the grossest stuff I've seen.
- weebit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Sorry but I don't think loyalty is the problem here. One rodent is seen as a minor problem, but several at one time is a major infestation. Even the person doing the inspection knew this, which some here are tending to ignore. So what if the neighborhood had them. All neighborhoods do. It's how you control them, and the amount caught in the traps that was considered during the inspection too. They won't shut a place down for one rodent in a trap. I know this as fact. SIX rodents were alive on the traps. Not one.
- danthepiercer, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1wow, a voice of reason? on digg?!
i commend you sir, for your rational response.
now be prepared to be dugg down. - Klinky, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Here is the link to the original health inspection report:

There are notes of multiple holes in the wall. Mice could easily scurry in and out. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Six mice, and not a single rat?!?
- slapded, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1if the pizza hut closed, he would have lost his job anyway.
- viviwanu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1No wonder every time I added chicken to my pizza they never charged me for it!
- kavery, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Pizza Hut sucks. We had a large pizza from there the other night and it was tiny and overpriced.
It's best to find a local dive or at least Costco's pizza for the same price. - Sfmobius, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1People still eat at Pizza huts? Pizza hut is like the Walmart of retail.
- ExSlashdotter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1actually, i think that would be pretty bad-ass having Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles running around my restauraunt...
- Parthymon, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Anyone find this ad amusing?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v93/Parthymon/catirony1.jpg - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Everything tastes better in Canada.
- combatchuck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I live in MI, which is also an "at will" state. Thank god for unions. If my employer had their way, they'd have a new set of workers after changeover every year.
- ronsii, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I would've fire that employee too, I mean talk about loyalty or the lack of it... I mean come on so they had mice in traps, isn't that what the traps are for??? I guess they would rather not have traps and the mice could be free range! Besides you usually have to look at nearby buildings to find the real source of why they cannot cope with the high number of pests. I dunno maybe I would rather see a rat in a trap instead of as a topping ;-)
- weebit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Pizza Hut at 3691 New Bern Ave.
http://www.localtechwire.com/5onyourside/story/1474451/ - k0rd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1WFMY is my local station, the station's site will probably go down soon, digg effect r0x0orz
- weebit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I noticed that this particular restaurant is a repeat offender. Most other reports they had red violations, but they did not keep repeating the same violations over and over as this restaurant did. Looks to me like a clear case of bad management.
Perhaps even if the woman lost her job over this, it could be she knew more than what she told the public? Plus even though she would not clean the mess up it could be she was tired of having to clean up at the manager's lack of management skills for jobs that should of been taken care of on a regular basis. So the problem got out of hand, and I don't blame her for not wanting to deal with a bad rodent problem. Ten rodents seen, means plenty more you can't see.
I have seen places like this in the past that the same workers, were handling jobs that management should of been taken care of all along. The place was neglected until it was mandatory to take care of it. I just think the Pizza Hut Franchise needs to look deeper into this particular restaurant. It may be the Management that needs a swift kick out the front door. - Urusai, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1No, it's how long it takes to slip an envelope to the health inspector.
