- yellowcakewalk, on 06/30/2008, -7/+6Pharm companies spend twice as much on advertising as they do on research. It's illegal to advertise pharmeceuticals in most countries, but not in the USA. They have a very powerful lobby that's very good at squeezing the money out of American citizens.
- cashman57, on 06/30/2008, -0/+4I rely on no less than four different medicines a day in order to maintain my quality of life.
Yes, the large pharmeceuticals spend a lot of money on advertising and lobbying, but they also spend money on providing their products to people who cannot afford them.A veteran who is disabled and lives in my city receives free medicine from one of the biggest pharm. cos. in the land. His is one of the "orphan" diseases that is treated with medicine only and he has the most up to date treatment thanks to the big company that manufactures the drug that he needs to stay alive.
If you are an investor this sector would be a good one to look at because of the potential for growth.
If you are a patient with a rare disease then this sector is likely your lifeline. - AmyVernon, on 06/30/2008, -0/+5amazing. makes me wish i'd invested in the market back in the day. now, with all that money, maybe they can produce more drugs for poor nations and help eradicate some diseases?
- taylorblue, on 06/30/2008, -1/+4A Trillion? Who even needs that kind of money? Man...
- earthandeconomy, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3Hopefully we can find a way to keep the meds out of our water supply...wonder how big the market is for that?

- djturtlep, on 06/30/2008, -1/+3How will our health system every get reformed when there so much money to be made?
- Mswldflwr, on 06/30/2008, -1/+4With that kind of money in their pockets, it sure seems that our senior citizens shouldn't have to take such a beating on prescriptions every month.
- JerichoSam, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3That's dramatic growth. I wonder how the market will change as insurance companies continue to make it more difficult and more expensive to get brand-name prescription meds.
- FeargusMcDuff, on 06/30/2008, -1/+3Wow! That'll be one tenth of the US debt!
- gadgetholic, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1If I could get my hands on one one-hundredth of that money I'd be set for life.
- koalagirl, on 07/01/2008, -0/+2Generic drugs are so important to poor, developing nations that I don't care if their market availability does cut into the trillion dollar value, as the article says it could.
- LoriAngel, on 07/01/2008, -0/+2Some of the commercials for medications make me ill. Like restless leg syndrome. Do you really need to pop a pill because your legs are jittery?
Don't get me wrong. I am so not anti-medication--for illnesses that actually require them.
