- KipBond, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15My sister & her family had a "2111" jar, and they all just got over what they thought was a stomach virus. I just bought a huge jar of this stuff... now I'm not sure I'm going to eat it. Ugh. I love Peter Pan peanut butter!! Damn You Peter Pan!!!!! (shaking fist)
- lweese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I wish I had a choosy mom. Instead, I get salmonella.
- dmsean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11your mom delivered news to you before digg? wtf man. get your mom an account and tell her to start submitting!
- thumperings, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11generic tastes better.. but.. I'd eat it anyway... I hear Salmon is good for you Salmonella is just Salmon with a missing slipper.
- mazdagirluk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10the new slang for peanut butter - "2111" heh
- LR2_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I just finished talking to a friend of mine that said her sister ate half a jar of this last night and had to go to the hospital today because she was feeling really ill. Who would have thought you could get sick off of peanut butter?
- skyhighrockets, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Peanut Butter Jelly Time?
- alphgeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Salmonella is particularly dangerous in high fat products like peanut butter and chocolate. The normal infectious dose is 50,000 organisms per gram or so. However, this drops to around 10 organisms per gram in high fat products, which is why they take it so seriously in peanut butter.
What happens is the fat coats the Salmonella and protects it from the acid in the stomach. The organism is then able to go straight to the intestine where it reproduces and causes illness.
By the way, peanut butter is also a high risk food for aflatoxin, which can cause cirrhosis and liver cancer. Kids are particularly susceptible and shouldn't eat more than a tablespoon of peanut butter a day. - otheruser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7 KRAMER: 'm mossy, Jerry. My brain is mossy. Listen to this
idea. A restaurant that serves only peanut butter and jelly.
JERRY: What d'you call it?
KRAMER: P B and J's. - jcaino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6dude, this is OLD
my mom told me about this HOURS ago...(seriously)
anyway, they ate about half the jar over the past week. They seem to have lucked out - but the jar is going back.
@LR2
who could get sick of peanut butter? how about all those people that are allergic to it? - dunezone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I say eat it, and kick Salmonella's ass. Actually, dont do this, I got 102 fever as I type this, maybe ive been wrong about eating stuff off the floor.
- aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Thank you digg, thank you so much.
A can of 2111 just went in the trash, My girlfriend was just going to make a sandwich oddly enough. - samus007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5lol. I have 5 of these Jars sitting in my kitchen. 1 is almost empty. :o Guess as soon as I get home I will trash them and send the tops to the company for a refund.
-So, time to buy some Skippy! - SoundJudgment, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5>> I blame Grocery Outlet for stocking this garbage.
What. You're mad because they didn't open up every single jar of peanut butter they sold and test it out for you before-hand?
.
Don't blame the grocery-stores for running their business and not receiving any warning about specific food-products until the official announcement is issued. It makes you seem foolish. - theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Hell, I'm just going to take mine to Wal-Mart. They take ANYTHING back.
The code on top of my Peter Pan jar is the effected "2111", which may damn well explain my massive Imodium intake the last couple days. - Rikushix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Psh. Samonella. You can get samonella from eating raw eggs. Which I do every day. It makes me strong.
- nesquik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That will definitely put some hairs on her chest.
- np374, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I t ' s P e a n u t B u t t e r J e l l y T i m e ..... oh wait....*croaks*
- iptfn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Oh man ! - :( - !
I was eating 2111 peanut butter when I read this. My jaw just kinda dropped, and I clutched my stomach. I have been eating that ***** 2-3 times a day since I bought that jar a couple days ago.
Oh man. - xrisnothing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Oh, and yes the product code does start with 2111.
- biffsputnik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have a 2111 jar.. almost empty. And I'm glad I now have an explanation for the severe stomach cramps and well... assorted other less pleasant symptoms. My sister (shops at the same store) also had some of this, and was seriously ill for days.. I realize there are probably thousands of these 2111 jars out there that are not contaminated, but trust me... you don't want to take the chance.
- oyourmom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I got the 2111 jar and i eat like a cup full of that stuff on my sandwich everyday. *****.
- CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It appears that EVERYONE has a jar of this.
- xrisnothing, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I've got a jar of it. I've been eating it for months, since September at least. It's delicious. This article made me want a peanut butter sandwich, so I'm going to take my chances. It's worth it. I've always wanted to be infected with salmonella anyway.
- dmsean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3half a jar? wtf...dude....she fat and there was no cake around?
- GuyHitByTruck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What's your point, though? Some people don't watch tv news (like me). If it weren't for Digg, I would have just gone on oblivious to the fact that every single spoonful was risking my life. It may take a while for some news to get to some people, but the fact that it does get to them is what's important.
- dotlizard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4the problem with this world isn't too much salmonella, it's not enough. once you get it three times or so, it doesn't affect you except maybe stinky burps.
(when i had lizards, it seemed wrong to keep my buddies caged, so they ran loose. salmonella ensued. it didn't kill me, it made me stronger.) (i'm ready to get dugg down, go ahead, i don't care, i'm _tough_ remember?) - bravecoward, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I had the 2111 jar and also just got over what i just thought was a bad fever and stomach virus.
I want my 3 days of school back, we can't all stay kids forever you prick! - tateswayz91, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Holy crap I almost ate this stuff! Thank you digg!
- Pottersquash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes the true knowledge of it, Great Value = Peter Pan. This may be the worst thing about this
- biffsputnik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ok, I agree with you on the 5th digit thing- I believe the 2111 is probably the location code for that particular plant, not meaning that all 2111 jars are contaminated- but as I said above, I have definitely suffered the effects, as well as another familiy member. And ConAgra doesn't have us in the 300 number.. Yesterday, their "call with questions, concerns" phone number listed on the label was unreachable, as was the number listed in the recall press release. Their website was down for the most part, too. So all the people who had symptoms but did not know it was due to the PB until the recall are not counted in that number. The company has no way of knowing how many people were affected yet. (my 5th digit was a 6, btw)
- cfazzini, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3um *****. half a jar of 2111 gone. uh oh.
- triont, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I did eat some great value PB crackers Saturday, and was very sick Sunday. Could it be a coincidence?
- pocketveto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can someone please explain to me how chicken ***** got into my peanut butter?
Go ***** yourself, ConAgra. - redtrak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow I have 2 jars... thanks for letting me know!
- xrisnothing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, now I've got to do a taste test. Damn peanut butter cartels!
- littlejon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2actually i got salmonella from this at the end of last week and earlier this week, and i live in florida. it wasnt too bad, but they need to add florida to the list of 39 states. im also sending in my lid tomorrow
- AnteChronos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I blame Grocery Outlet for stocking this garbage."
You blame the grocery store for the food manufacturer's mistake? And that makes sense how, exactly? If anything, blame yourself for not eating Jiff (which is the superior peanut butter, as far as I'm concerned). That makes as much sense as blaming the store. - undergrace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think every jar ever made begins with 2111. The key is the FIFTH number... I noticed the "new, infected" pb has a 6 or 7 as the fifth digit... the older jars have a 4 or 5. This indicates that throughout time the fifth number is the one progressively moving forward. 2111 is pretty much just the product code. The fifth number tells you what batch you have. The news is scaring the crap out of a bunch of people without really examining *which* numbers to look for. Blanket statements = perfectly good peanut butter down the drain.
- undergrace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2We have jars of 2111 in our pantry... one almost empty jar expired Sept.2006. Seeing as it isn't until NOW that 2111 has become the "magic number" to identify infected jars, I think there is a good chance that EVERY jar *ever* made will start with 2111. I noticed the ones being shown on the news here in Houston were all 21116 or 21117... our jars are 21114 and 21115 (expires next month). I think that 5th number is the significant one. I had a peanut butter sandwich before watching the news. I feel fine. And judging by the comments from all you other Diggers, everyone has these jars, and none of you are getting sick.
300 people in the NATION have become ill. There has to be millions of jars out there (especially if they ALL start with 2111). I think this is a case of people freaking out over something that *might* effect a miniscule part of the country. Nobody is dying; everyone infected has recovered in less than a week. Hooray for media hype scaring people away from perfectly good peanut butter. - HeyFergy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Awesome! As soon as I read this I immediately thought about my housemate who has been extremely sick for the last 4 days...lots of time spent in the bathroom if you know what I mean. Anyway, he just bought a huge jar of Peter Pan PB last weekend and he had eaten like half of it by the time he got sick.....and surprise, surprise...the number on the lid starts with 2111! This is so exciting. If he doesnt send the lid in with a nasty letter I will!
I've never been part of a product recall but for some reason I have always wanted to.. - tripfactor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Crap... This explains quite a few recent events in my life...
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/172/391818583_25abd51fdf_o.jpg
Class action anyone? - Rocketmac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is why I buy my own peanuts and make peanut butter at home.
It's easy and I think tastes better.
Now, if the place I buy the peanuts from say that they may have a contaminated batch, I'll cry. - dangmoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have one jar 2/3rds gone, most everyone in my family has one or two, my son was very sick last week, my mom was very sick today (she several spoonfuls before turning on the TV)...
Can you believe you have to mail in the lid to get a refund... I call BS on that... - endgame, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I blame the Illegal Mexicans....
They were the cause of the Spinach problem a few months back they were crapping in the fields...... - AnteChronos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think you meant to say:
I t ' s P e a n u t B u t t e r S a l m o n e l l a T i m e - justoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was actually sitting at home eatting some of the recalled peanut butter when my girlfriend came home and told me about the recall. Shame too because I just opened it an hour before and started eatting on it.
- mogdor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dude, I think just eating a beef patty with peanut butter is enough to cause diarrhea...........salmonella or not!!!
