- Dumbledorito, on 09/03/2008, -8/+54And if you think $100 per barrel is a bargain, then the conditioning has worked, and many wealthy men smile inwardly as their work is complete... for now.
- Kent4jmj, on 09/03/2008, -11/+43We've been raped real good because most people don't even know it happened. They are just kind of cranky and angry not really knowing why.
Because of government regulations which inhibit energy exploration and development, deficit spending which has severely devalued the dollar and military aggressiveness in oil countries undermining their ability to produce and export oil in a stable environment not to mention a Cartel that is always looking for the highest prices possible we have unnecessarily high gas prices.
Free markets, much smaller government and a non intervention foreign policy would correct 99% of this nonsense. The idea that government deficit spending to jump start the economy, a Kenseyian idea, is wrong, The idea that government and big corporations should build a "partnership," also known as Fascism, is wrong. The idea that government needs to regulate business, a socialist/communist idea is also wrong. - tdp301, on 09/03/2008, -3/+32What about
"Oil prices skyrocket as supplies plunge" - dougvfr750, on 09/02/2008, -2/+30Let's have a few more near misses and gas will be back to $2. Yeah, yeah, I'm dreamin.... and it sucks for those affected by the storms.
- notUncool, on 09/03/2008, -3/+28Hmm..still trying to figure out how crude has dropped almost $50/barrel but I'm still paying $3.40 a gallon for regular unleaded.
- Pedestrian101, on 09/03/2008, -8/+27If it's Bush's fault gas prices rise, it must be thanks to him that they are falling!
- MrPat8oHed, on 10/09/2008, -2/+20The words "oil prices" and "plunge" in the same sentence make me smile.
- whatthefu, on 09/02/2008, -5/+22Good! I just hope people continue to use gas carefully and only drive when absolutely necessary.
- inactive, on 09/02/2008, -1/+15Ya - but a guy can dream - can't he?
- inactive, on 09/03/2008, -0/+13So, how much exactly should it be? It's constantly argued that it's a finite resource, I'm actually shocked it's not much much higher considering the entire world is dependant upon it.
- mgill3, on 09/03/2008, -10/+23The oil companies are lowering the price of oil to help the republicans look better for this election.
- inactive, on 09/03/2008, -0/+11You are right OC73
When Oil was rising these lefties were crying Bush is out to make his evil Oil buddies rich. Then the first oil contracts Iraq gave went to a Chinese state company. And now Oil prices are falling they don't know what to say.
Expect some spin where Obama is responsible. - NJank, on 09/03/2008, -1/+12"Obama makes guest appearance on Lost after landslide November victory."
I even maintained correct capitalization. You must be beaming now. - PabloMac, on 09/03/2008, -0/+9Thanks for sharing, but that doesn't explain why prices shoot up so abruptly.
- jeremyduffy, on 09/03/2008, -1/+9I figured the news of oil prices going up due to hurricanes was just another excuse until I saw just how many oil rigs are out there. Holy crap!
http://www.cruisebruise.com/gulf_of_mexico_oil_pla ... - oldhick, on 09/03/2008, -1/+9Seriously, what is the fair market price for oil then? You're getting plenty of Diggs so all of you in agreement, chime in with the "real" price then. We're all waiting.
- inactive, on 09/03/2008, -0/+8WTF are you talking about. It'd own 46 cents in my area. That's a pretty good drop. Now it needs to come down another $1.46 and I'll be happy.
- OC73, on 09/03/2008, -4/+11This is just a continuation of the oil bubble that burst a few weeks back. The only thing more overinflated than oil is the Euro.
- OC73, on 09/03/2008, -3/+10Don't hold your breath. These lefitst idiots are so deranged, they would praise authoritarian thugs like Saddam or Putin long before they would ever say anything remotely positive about Bush.
- Yousty, on 09/03/2008, -0/+7I really need to hurry up and invent that sarcasm detector for commenters like Dumbledorito and TheSabre who obviously need it.
Great comment Pedestrian101, I laughed. - inactive, on 09/03/2008, -0/+7Lol I was wondering how this got onto the front page of digg.com.
The price of oil decreasing?
Must be the work of the Messiah.
Except he isn't president.
Yet again Digg.com economic professors letting their party politics rule over their brain and common sense. - connieLingus, on 09/03/2008, -0/+7boom, then bust.
repeat. - cypherignite, on 09/03/2008, -0/+6How are they doing that exactly? They don't control the NYMEX. Please tell me the mechanism they are using to do this.
- regeya, on 09/03/2008, -0/+6Free markets are flawed in the same way communism is flawed--it relies on honesty to work. Lots of luck finding honest people to run the thing.
If we were to attempt to make the markets truly free, it really WOULD lead to a second Gilded Age. - brettg102, on 09/03/2008, -0/+6Gas 3.42 here this morning. Woot!
- inactive, on 09/03/2008, -1/+7Nah. They're just oversupplying the market, getting everyone to sell their commodities so they can buy them back up, then cut supply again, and sell the same commodities at the higher per barrel price. You'll see
- DeskFlyer, on 09/03/2008, -4/+10Too bad gasoline will remain high no matter how far oil drops. It's like a one-way check valve.
- LonesomeFighter, on 09/03/2008, -1/+7what i don't get is people are willing to buy $1 water bottles all the time with no problem, but bitch when gas is going to cost them a cent or two more a gallon. Gas is not that expensive when you really think about it.
- ptheroux, on 09/03/2008, -0/+6The democrats blamed $140 a barrel oil on the "greed" of oil companies. By that logic, this drop in oil prices should prove that oil companies have gotten less greedy!
- blueskydiver76, on 09/03/2008, -0/+6When $$ / barrel goes up the refineries sure don't wait to run through their inventory of oil that they purchased at the lower price...they hike up those prices instantly.
***** blows - cypherignite, on 09/03/2008, -0/+6Gas prices tend to be sticky downward. It also takes time for refiners to run through their inventories of oil that they purchased at the higher price, refine that oil, and then sell it to gas stations that need new oil. This ***** isn't magic. Believe it or not there is a complicated process involved in turning oil into gasoline and it takes time to distribute the good to the markets that need it.
- Foot56, on 09/03/2008, -1/+6I'm only 23 and I caught myself saying..
"I remember when gas prices...."
I'm getting old :( - snotrokit, on 09/03/2008, -4/+9and gas prices will follow this downward trend in........ oh wait, that's right, they don't go down with the price of oil, just up.
silly me. - inactive, on 09/03/2008, -0/+5All that happened here was supply and demand, and probably a dose of speculation.
Free market actually works - bluto36, on 09/03/2008, -2/+7still blaming bush for Katrina. how is that re-count in Florida doing?
- diggerpleez, on 09/03/2008, -0/+5in a word? *****
- bluto36, on 09/03/2008, -0/+5one day people will realize that govt can only ***** up trading and speculation.
that being said every time pelosi gets on TV the price of bacon and gas goes up. there is a direct correlation that her face actually causes oil and food shortages. - CedEx, on 09/03/2008, -1/+6What about
"Obama uses his leisure time to catch up on the latest episodes of Lost." - dockb0y, on 09/03/2008, -0/+5Oh, and don't forget to inflate your tires.
- charkol, on 09/03/2008, -2/+7Dude, I hate that. Why does everyone on the left always act like every Republican is out there to screw with the general public? I take offense to it.
Its politics, people on both sides are screwing with the public. And there are people on each side that care a little about the public.
EVERY politician is a slimebag. Yes, even Obama. Flame me, digg me down, and call me a fag but its the sad truth. - OC73, on 09/03/2008, -6/+11Obama-worshiping tools would actually believe something so stupid.
- inactive, on 09/03/2008, -0/+4massaks will scooter bomb you if you don't comply with his demands gas guzzlers!
- lattin1, on 09/03/2008, -2/+6Must be nice. They're price gauging the ***** out of people at the pump down here in Baton Rouge. $6.00/gallon. Ironic how the people that put their necks on the line to protect and maintain these refiniries/offshore rigs during the hurricane are the same people getting the ***** end of the stick.
- NotOptium, on 09/03/2008, -1/+5Today I was beaten with a stick that was 3 and a half inches wide, not 4! Woot!
- ralphthemagi, on 09/03/2008, -6/+10The idea that free markets, much smaller government and a non intervention foreign policy would correct 99%, completely ignoring market externalities, public goods, and international politics is also "wrong". Real solutions aren't polarized. Real solutions are based on compromise.
Free markets don't remain "free" for very long if the government doesn't step in to regulate big players from getting together to create monopolies. Free markets don't calculate for externalities created by oil production and oil consumption.
Ron Paul economics are good if taken in small sips. But don't even think for a minute that the kind of free market, gold standard, IRS dissolving, dissolution of public goods world he trumpets is a good idea, or something that most people actually want. It's a pipe dream, a utopian free market world that only exists on paper without actual people or real equity concerns. - inactive, on 09/03/2008, -1/+5Sort of, but it's more that the Euro has been tanking.
- inactive, on 09/03/2008, -0/+4Shhh you'll jinx it
- rickpdx, on 09/03/2008, -0/+4I would laugh if this weren't so utterly predictable. Does anyone still remember that in the months just before the 2004 elections the price of gas at the pump dropped dramatically? I predicted this would happen again several months ago and it is indeed happening. Why? Cost of doing business. The big oil companies want to make sure a Republican wins, so they forego some of their record profits for a few months to take the anger away from the ruling party. The dumb Joe's who vote Republican are appeased for the moment (having no long-term memory) and vote for McCain. Then after the election, exactly as also happened last time, the prices will start to climb quickly. No one should be fooled again. We've got to get off of oil.
- p51d007, on 09/03/2008, -3/+7Get is right before the idiots on the left call you a racist.
It's not Obama....it's His majesty Lord Obama the 1st. - Kent4jmj, on 09/03/2008, -0/+4Free Markets Work when you have a Nation under the Rule of Law which requires citizens to demand elected officials to honor the Constitution. One of the few real jobs of government is maintenance of a judicial system and the courts. An enlightened electorate concerning their Absolute Power and Protection they have as Jurists would empower (I still hate that word) them to make judgements according to the Highest Law of the Land, the Constitution. Few realize that when you sit on a jury you have the power to vote no with full impunity.
That means citizens who take Corporations to court with a jury of their peers have a better than average chance of kicking some corporate big business ass.
As for idealism yes I am. It's the best way to move back in the right direction and to impact any debate. Ron Paul's "Idealism" is a perfect example. We would not be having this conversation at all if it weren't for him. The higher the standard the better. We have done well at times and we have done very poorly at times. To throw up ones hands in a cynical defeatist attitude is horse *****. We can keep slipping down the path towards bankruptcy and totalitarianism or we try in our own small ways to have some effect. -
