- MrBrotato, on 03/09/2009, -5/+27Wait... They sold 21 floors of their building only to lease them back? Long-term that does not make sense.... But then again, they know as good as we do that they won't be around for the long term, maybe not long enough to even finish the 15 year lease of the floors.
- SQLserver, on 03/10/2009, -6/+21Who would want the NYT to go? That's like a liberal wanting the Wall Street Journal to go! Both, while often biased in different directions, are quite awesome resources for interesting news and information, especially stuff that's not political.
- inboxnews, on 03/09/2009, -22/+34Best news of the day. Thanks.
- perryc, on 03/09/2009, -1/+12Tough times for everybody...
- frieddonuts, on 03/10/2009, -3/+9glad to see rational voice in a page full of bitter conservative guffawing
- LittleDas, on 03/10/2009, -1/+7You can tell someone is beyond reason when they hate to hear opposing points of view rather than welcoming the discussion.
- lordmike, on 03/10/2009, -1/+6All the right wingers are laughing, but the L.A. Times and the Chicago Tribune are next... And Rupert's propaganda newspapers aren't doing so well, either... actually, they never did, Murdoch always took a loss on his newspapers... So, I wouldn't laugh too hard... your propaganda outlets will soon suffer the same fate...
- jessehadden, on 03/10/2009, -0/+4When you characterize your opinion as "loving the country," and an opposing opinion as "hating the country," you expose yourself as someone who is incapable of seeing his own bias.
- vickerz, on 03/10/2009, -5/+9nah nah nah nah, nah nah nah nah, hey hey hey...
- copperhead1288, on 03/10/2009, -0/+4You do not read.
- reposado, on 03/10/2009, -1/+5NYT is one of the most biased major paper around actually.
Either your a liberal who cant see the bias or you dont read the paper. - offrdbandit, on 03/10/2009, -3/+7How exactly would "illiterate right wing followers" know anything in the article? You do know what illiterate means, right?
- rhodydog, on 03/10/2009, -1/+4Let me guess Annie666, you get your news from that bastion of truth, FOX news? If we'd educated our population we'd not be in the mess we're in now.
- rhodydog, on 03/10/2009, -1/+4And neither do we need yours.
- sanman, on 03/10/2009, -0/+3The NYT has always been a European embassy on US soil. As an Asian, I've always noticed the strong bias at the Times. Any group that is perceived as a threat to European interests basically gets trashed in the Times.
That would be Asians, Russians, Latin Americans, and US nationalism. By contrast, anything that supports Europe gets glorified.
It's disgusting to see that kind of deep bias passing for "journalism". I'm a longtime reader of the NYT, and I've always noticed this type of ugly behavior in them. But doing this seems part of their raison d'etre.
I'm truly glad to see this corrupt bastion of disinformation getting its comeuppance. Nobody has suffered so much from the spread of the internet as the poison pens at the New York Times. Thank goodness for the internet. - Fieldyza, on 03/10/2009, -0/+3Excellent. Callapsing due to the Internet and Free Media.
Adapt or Die New York Times - RuffRidr, on 03/09/2009, -13/+15Everything must go! Especially the biased reporting.
- sanman, on 03/10/2009, -1/+3You mean a European bias. Because that's what the NYT has. That rag is blatantly biased in favor of Europeans. And that's the way they like it.
- jmones, on 03/10/2009, -0/+2If you want to help soften the blow of this economic crisis why don't you try buying a paper once in a while. It's one of the only thing's Americans produce that can't be outsourced and it only costs fifty cents.
- GlobalGizmo, on 03/10/2009, -0/+2and the demise of newspapers continue...
- superfusion, on 03/10/2009, -0/+2I enjoy how hating on the NYT trumps basic, sound business principles.
- humanerror, on 03/10/2009, -1/+3I hope the new owners of their building make them provide a login and password every time they want to get into the office.
- offrdbandit, on 03/10/2009, -2/+4Except the clueless, completely insane, young person who thinks his "revolution" is just around the corner.
- superfusion, on 03/10/2009, -1/+3That's a classic business strategy: do what you're good at. Property management and ownership is an industry in itself. In 1999 Microsoft divested most of its non-American properties and leased them back. They had hundreds of millions of dollars tied up in real estate -- not their core business -- and freed that capital to focus on software development.
And then we got Vista, so ... it doesn't always work. - cyclopssmiley, on 03/10/2009, -0/+2Because all major offices like NYT are in Manhattan, its just a standard.
- IHaveCrayons, on 03/10/2009, -2/+4I actually like and read the NYTimes often, I think they have very good (if not bias) writers... their copy writing skills are the best in the business.
- ellerich, on 03/10/2009, -2/+4It's not left vs right it's newspapers vs the Internet. All are dead in the long-run.
- TheIndigoSky, on 03/10/2009, -4/+5Thank you, Annie66, for bringing a smile to my face. There are few stereotypes funnier than the ornery and half senile old person, ragin' against the forces that are "tearing the country apart".
- Grumby24, on 03/10/2009, -1/+2MrBrotato, I guess you've never heard of a sale-leaseback. Welcome to Finance 101. A majority of companies do it and it usually has nothing to do with the amount of time they expect to be around. This sale-leaseback is being used to redeem $250mm in other debt the company owes and this will keep their balance sheet strong for another few years.
- LittleDas, on 03/10/2009, -5/+6As we very well know, reality has a strong liberal bias.
- inactive, on 03/10/2009, -1/+2Good - another liberal propaganda tool disassembled.
- smorais, on 03/10/2009, -3/+4Not that Digg is biased in any way...
- Annie66, on 03/09/2009, -36/+37Maybe if the Times tried printing pro-American stories instead of propaganda pieces for the America-haters the financial situation would look better. Has anyone noticed that the far-Left rags that despise the country are not doing well?
- sanman, on 03/10/2009, -1/+2Unlike the NYT propagandists, Murdoch is a competent businessman, which is why he's even bought into MySpace.
- chase001, on 03/10/2009, -2/+3The Right Wing Noise Machine has successfully discredited and destroyed our newspaper of record. Fascism marches on without Bush.
- zelig, on 03/10/2009, -1/+2Liberals have a strong liberal bias.
- ryrocker, on 03/10/2009, -1/+2i doubt it...
its gonna be turned into one big giant starbucks - zelig, on 03/10/2009, -1/+2Liberals have a reality bias.
See how easy this is? - CaptainChad, on 03/10/2009, -0/+1No, it doesn't save money in the long run. But neither does taking out a mortgage to purchase a house. What it -does- do is give a needed boost in cash along with a predictable and manageable long term payment obligation.
- oochii, on 03/10/2009, -1/+1they aren't shrinking, they built a building bigger than the organization. they occupy 14 floors currently and have options to buy 21 back in 10 ten years. they are growing.
- jayjayjoni, on 03/10/2009, -5/+5Good. I'm done with conservative newspapers. Wall Street Journal and Washington Times next please.
- oochii, on 03/10/2009, -0/+0They currently only occupy 14 of the 51 floors. I'm surprised that they own any of them.
- borsetegypt, on 03/11/2009, -0/+0omg
really surprise !!!!!!!
i'll take a copy in this site please: http://www.borsaegypt.com - oochii, on 03/10/2009, -0/+0the times is a content provider. does anyone really touch cellulose anymore?
- fuzzmeister, on 03/10/2009, -6/+6Because everyone knows that pro-Republican means pro-American.

- oochii, on 03/10/2009, -1/+1this is not that weird. Most companies don't own the buildings that they occupy. I'm surprised that they didn't sell the building to a developer before it was built. The times only occupies a third of the building. this really has nothing to do with the finical stability of the company. it's just business. the times is a media company not a real-estate developer.
- Mooja, on 03/10/2009, -8/+8Bon Voyage!
