- LuxFX, on 04/24/2008, -0/+5I was engaged for four years, 1000 miles apart, before we got married. Long distance relationships absolutely can work. I have heard this said a few different ways in a few different quotes, but this was always good to remember: "Distance is to Love as Wind is to Fire. It extinguishes the small, but kindles the great."
- borez, on 04/24/2008, -1/+5Hats off to anyone who's ever manged to keep up a long distance relationship. I gave up on mine after three years, far too frustrating to be honest. Every time we met up we'd grown that little bit further apart and if you don't have a plan for eventually settling in the same spot then you may as well just forget about it and move on.
- the6thReplicant, on 04/24/2008, -0/+4David Suzuki's advice for long distance marriages/relationships (his wife did a PhD) is to ring EVERY DAY.
If you don't you'll just end up living back with a stranger who you know which day they do their laundry.
My 5 cents. - Vinvin, on 04/24/2008, -0/+3I'd say it compares to word-of-mouth advertising...
- occ1979, on 04/24/2008, -0/+2I am a Fluther addict too. Does anyone else think their CEO in the photo is a hottie? I have a big crush on him.
- kehunt, on 04/24/2008, -1/+3Fluther's freaking addictive... it's one of those sites that can make an hour of free time disappear without realizing it. And it less junk than yahoo answers.
- binaryfeed, on 04/24/2008, -0/+2The main site mentioned in the article is fluther (http://fluther.com/). Although I didn't really "get" the site at first, after spending some time on it, it's actually pretty cool. Check it out!
- breefield, on 04/24/2008, -0/+2Mmmm, fluther with us.
- lornali, on 04/24/2008, -0/+2Tough, but possible.
- JoeSpaceTime, on 04/24/2008, -0/+2digg: You free advertising platform.
- jobenjo, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1Thanks! We're in the process of retelling our story and streamlining the content so it's easier to "get". Once users see how it works, things go well, but the challenge for us is making that process happen to users the first time they see the site.
- StuTheMeatMan, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1I think every comment above me is from this guy's buddies.
- awmcclain, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1Anyone else have experience with long-distance business relationships?
- apetrie, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1You pretty much hit the nail on the head.. you need to be planning, in a relatively short period of time, to be in the same place. Once you are sure you want to be with the person a plan is simply a necessity! I'm in a long distance relationship now, and it feels positive, wonderful and absolutely worth it. Take away our plan to be together permanently though, and I'd be completely miserable and unsure of everything.
All that being said, the article is about long distance business partnerships, which is a different beast altogether. - inactive, on 04/24/2008, -1/+2I, too, can vouch for the difficulty of long-distance relationships. I love her, but if I go within 50 yards I'll be arrested :(
- rohandey, on 04/24/2008, -0/+0Even I follow fluther at times and I find some of the very simple questions very exciting.
- jobenjo, on 04/24/2008, -0/+0I definitely agree about meetups. Those help ease the burden of distance.
- nmyra, on 04/24/2008, -0/+0long distance biz partnerships are tough. sitting down with someone and sorting through things verbally face to face is really hard to replicate. going through the pains of this now. instant messenger aps, emails and phone calls only take you so far. meet-ups help.
- jessaandre, on 04/24/2008, -0/+0Sigh, sometimes technology makes me nauseous
- lilakess, on 04/24/2008, -1/+1Congrats! Great site and great article...
- JoeSpaceTime, on 04/25/2008, -0/+0I totally agree. I can be SO cynical sometimes.
- justinrp, on 02/05/2009, -0/+0Very interesting, with our line of work it's crucially important to stay connected as efficiently as possible.
