- rcw3, on 02/11/2008, -55/+420I for one welcome our new Blu-ray overlords... and so does my shiny new PS3...
- ibeetle, on 02/11/2008, -9/+178I think it is funny when a tech news story is submitted through a news agency (AP, CNBC, CNN, Reuters, etc.) the story on Digg flounders. However, submit it thorough blog spam disguised as a tech site and it gets on the front page in 15 minutes.
The original source, Netflix has it posted on their Corporate website here:

Anyway, I am surprised. As a PS3 owner I am happy, but surprised none the less. Do a HD DVD Netflix search here on Digg and several articles will come up about how Netflix rents more HD DVD than Blu-ray Disc. Oh well C'est la vie. - LawnGnome, on 02/11/2008, -17/+182I guess I'm going to have to breakdown and actually buy a Blu-ray player. Stupid HDDVD player gift for christmas. meh.
- grungegbunny, on 02/11/2008, -29/+139I see no reason to upgrade from regular DVDs yet.
- damndj, on 02/11/2008, -15/+107If there was any doubt who won the war, this will clear up that confusion.

- PhantomBantam, on 02/11/2008, -1/+83The digg zeitgeist really is great to watch. It seems like a short while ago digg was rabidly anti-PS3 and blueray by association. Now, you can actually say you have a PS3 and not get burried. 3 months ago, the politics section was dominated by Ron Paul. Now it's Obama. Sadly, I could go on...
- FoxFaction, on 02/11/2008, -15/+84Blu-ray has the best name, so it'll win in the long run. What's funny is I'm dead serious.
- rcw3, on 02/11/2008, -8/+71I agree -- I'm certainly with the download media crowd... except... it's hard to beat the bandwidth of high-density disc, at least for now. Blu-ray on a large screen is absolutely amazing - even compared with mid-bandwidth HD cable / satellite. Can't wait for the terrabit internet connection.
- clemsontigers, on 02/11/2008, -2/+63Now if only NetFlix can find a way to mail out a newly released Blu-Ray without making you wait a month...
- Trixcan, on 02/11/2008, -13/+60I saw a guy buying a HDDVD player the other day......idioit.
- boostedfc3s, on 02/11/2008, -3/+48"Bring out yer dead"
"I'm not dead yet"
"Non-sense, you'll be stone dead in a moment" - BrandonMills, on 02/11/2008, -1/+40US internet connections, in general, aren't good enough for downloadable content to be a realistic alternative for HD.
- Daolohua, on 02/11/2008, -2/+40Well there goes my HD-DVD supplier. My 360's HD-DVD drive now functions as the most expensive doorstop I've ever bought
- zetsurin, on 02/11/2008, -9/+43The Wii, came, bored everyone senseless, then moved on.
- shredswithpiks, on 02/11/2008, -2/+36I agree I absolutely hate saying "aech dee dee vee dee"
Blu Ray is superior for not making me say 5 syllables. - hotsoda, on 02/11/2008, -10/+42The upcoming release list for HD DVD looks horrible anyway. There's no huge loss.
- kingmanic, on 02/11/2008, -5/+36The billion people on the internet mostly have slow connections (sub 3.0 mbs). so they won't care about online content download for a decade yet.
- Trixcan, on 02/11/2008, -6/+34Yay, another step closer to ending a pointless format war.
- fancyj, on 02/11/2008, -0/+27I would digg you to China if I could.
- BurnTees, on 02/11/2008, -0/+27isn't that what people generally do when they BUY a dvd?
- FoxFaction, on 02/11/2008, -4/+30Well, there is a difference between clinging to clearly outdated technology and not wanting to waste money on undefined cutting-edge technology.
- shaka999, on 02/11/2008, -7/+33If you have netflix you can get Blue-ray for the same price as DVD.
- mdaize, on 02/11/2008, -9/+34yay... you can enjoy spending days downloading a compressed, dvd quality high def movie on ur compy
- brstilson, on 02/11/2008, -2/+26If you don't have an HDTV, no, there's no reason. But I just got a 47" 1080p HDTV and while DVDs look pretty good at 480p, Blu-Ray movies at 1080p just look amazing. I currently don't have a Blu-Ray player ATM, but the price is already dropping. You can pick one up now for $399. In a few years, they'll likely be less than $200. I remember my first DVD player. It was $230 and your average movie was $25. Technology will get cheaper as support for old 230i and 480i analog TV wanes.
- inactive, on 02/11/2008, -1/+25It's times like this when I feel saddened I can only bury you once.
- fadetoone, on 02/11/2008, -10/+33If you are paying $40 for a blu-ray movie, then maybe you should stay in your hole.
I get most of mine for $20 or less. - xXGeechXx, on 02/11/2008, -5/+28Since I just bought a PS3 in light of the Warner news any news like this makes me a feel a little bit better more certain I made the right choice.
- solid12345, on 02/11/2008, -20/+43What is this crap of "guess I HAVE to buy a blue-ray"
I'm perfectly happy with DVD generation 1 format and no movie is worth paying 25-40 dollars no matter what the picture quality is. - mooninite, on 02/11/2008, -4/+26The scratch resistant coating will help out tremendously here. Netflix will make a killing from not having to restock scratched BDs compared to the DVD losses.
- thefandango, on 02/11/2008, -8/+29i'm very glad that i've held off on the whole HD war. after waiting what seemed like forever, i can get a decent HDTV without breaking the bank, and feel comfortable getting Blu-ray.
- likwidfuzion, on 02/11/2008, -2/+22When you're ridiculing another person by calling he or she an idiot, at least spell it correctly to not make an ass out of yourself.
- Metalmoon, on 02/11/2008, -1/+21i remember my dad saying VHS is good enough
- inactive, on 02/11/2008, -0/+19No one makes money if the direct link makes it to the front page. When a blogspam layer gets promoted faster than the actual source it just proves that there is gaming going on. I recognize most of the blogspam links by now and i won't click them. I'll go into the comments and scroll down--inevitably some kind person, such as yourself, will post the real link.
What I dislike most about the blogspam sites is that I'm sometimes presented with 8 or more other sites that I need to temporarily allow in no-script if I want to view the content. - inactive, on 02/11/2008, -5/+23I don't understand the logic behind your statement.
What's the difference between purchasing from sony and purchasing from Microsoft? - FoxFaction, on 02/11/2008, -4/+21It was clearly a Christmas present, which is typically given to someone by someone else, so assuming LawnGnome chose it is ignorant of you.
- smujeremy, on 02/11/2008, -3/+19If prices of Blu-Ray do not come down, they will never take over DVD, now the biggest competition.
- FoxFaction, on 02/11/2008, -2/+17Because some people dislike having things that they must keep because of social pressure, but are actually of little use to them. Like when someone's mom makes them a sweater. :)
- dynamojoe, on 02/11/2008, -7/+22Bright side: HD-DVD movies will be cheaper in the short run...
- zengonzo, on 02/11/2008, -1/+15Which is pretty nice, actually. Glad they didn't tack on a premium for that. They will also switch all of the DVDs in your queue over to Blu-ray automatically if you select it as your player.
- coollettuce, on 02/11/2008, -1/+15A 1080p x.264 rip is around 8GB and theres basically no noticeable quality loss.
- TrevorBradley, on 02/11/2008, -1/+15... and will make great target practice for your new skeet shooting hobby in 2009!
- chepnut, on 02/11/2008, -5/+19That seems odd to me that Netflix would make that kind of decision, I wonder if sony sent them any financial encouragement. It would make sense that HDDVD players are in the price range of a lot more people, with a marketing campaign they could get the word out that you can rent your HDDVD's online. That would be a big boost to the format. Personally I don't care, I don't have either, I am waiting to see what happens. (i have too many early adoptions sitting in a closet)
And as for digital distribution in the US, it wont happen! Do you think the ISP's are going to allow that much traffic without a sharp increase in access cost? When downloading movies and TV shows really becomes mainstream our bandwith prices are going to be a joke. - kmoed, on 02/11/2008, -12/+25You're right, DVD has won!
- mywhitenoise, on 02/11/2008, -2/+15Why would you need a Solid State Drive? Couldn't you still fit downloaded movies in a standard ATA, or SATA drive?
I'll take the disc, but your argument is stupid. - FoxFaction, on 02/11/2008, -3/+16He doesn't like movies in HD DVD format, hence the problem. He now has a useless HD DVD player because most movies being sold are in blu-ray format, which is causing him slight financial duress. He cannot get rid of the HD DVD player, as it was a present, but he is most likely going to still buy a blu-ray player, giving him 2 HD-quality players, which seems like a waste. The emotional divide between the possibility of having 2 players and having the feeling that one is enough, causes his emotional state that prompted his comment.
- link5280, on 02/11/2008, -8/+21Since the Blu-Ray players cost almost twice as a the HDDVD ones I will be keeping my cheap $30 DVD player for some time. Hey Sony, let me know when you can make them for less than $100.
- Tenetri, on 02/11/2008, -11/+24Casino Royal is so ***** good, HD TV, with Blue-Ray... Go rent it if you haven't already
- thatsmyaibo, on 02/11/2008, -3/+16Exactly. I'm proud that I stick to my guns. I got the PS3 on day of release and while diggers were knocking on the thing, I was enjoying it best I could with the little that was out. I'm just amazed how impressionable diggers are with the trends of the month...now if only this Anon thing would go away.
