- bobcrotch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31Yeah but at least you guys have a great mass transit system unlike most of America.
- xerus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33Anything to declare?
"Yeah, don't go to England." - masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25The average price of gas in 1996 was $1.11. With inflation, that comes to $1.46 for 2006.
edit: Ah, sultantravi beat me to it. And did a better job. digg me down. - codyodell, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24That's it. I'm buying a horse.
- bluebobbo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Hm, time to dust off that pedal bike in the garage.
- PATSCRU, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20I just paid $3.98 for premium in downtown LA, and now it hurts to sit down.
- Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Like the rest of WHAT country?

Yeah, Digg, just keep digging him down. - dukeeeey, on 10/12/2007, -14/+31lol $3 gallon ?
that's cheap !
Come to england, we pay $2/litre, or something like $7.50/gallon - technogenius, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20and no election this year for them to lower the prices...
- SultanTravi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I know it's still not the same, but I will add that America is in general much, much more spread out that most European places, especially if (like me) you live in the west.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20vote republican, drive the economy into a ditch.
- lieutenantmudd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17A bike is great if you live within two or three miles of work. Most Americans live much further than that. I agree Americans are lazy, but it's not because we choose to not ride bikes for 80 minutes to work each morning.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Yeah.. I just bought a Chevelle with a 350 4 barrel. I might be introuble.
- jandeloo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12@codyodell "We should seriously do this. All the digg users alone should put a pretty big dent in the economy."
That's not how it works since we don't buy gas everyday. If everyone agreed not to buy gas on say, tuesday, people would simply buy it the day before. - stukdog, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Last year when the prices were this high, there was a ton of talk about alternatives and price gouging. This year, there isn't so much (even though oil companies are still making record profits.)
Maybe too much attention on impeachments, pre-mature presidential races, and of course HD-DVD codes. - dazem, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14$3.45 for regular unleaded this morning here in san diego.
great ... its higher here than the highest statewide average. - diulei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Time to start using my motorcycle. At least that thing gets 50MPG so it'll hurt a lot less.
- mistervolcom88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11$4 by Christmas doesn't sound so far-fetched now. (at least in Southern California)
- MAdaXe42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10True - it's actually really really good, just horrifically expensive - the prices I quoted above are off-peak - on peak (before 9:30 AM), a train from Bath to London (80-100 miles, about 1.5 hrs) costs about $220. Single.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17Did anyone remember how gas dipped to 1.99 right before elections? Gas prices are manipulated. Summer driving season/ ethanol reformulation/ MTBE replacement/ hurricanes my ass. (If Katrina really crippled US refining capability, we'd have seen prices continue to get higher and higher but they magically stopped rising at the psychological barrier of $3.99.)
- TheCash, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Talked with the father of my ex who works as a subcontractor for Bp. He said some company tech told him that the EPA recently instituted new emissions regulations for their refineries, so a large number of them needed to be renovated to meet the new codes. This lowers their overall production numbers, decreasing supply in a time of year that demand is rising. I have no idea how much of this is true, but I did confirm that this is whats being passed around the employees of oil companies here in Alaska, so it's either true, or all the big oil corps are spreading the same BS excuse.
Personally, I think it's a little of both. For the consumer, it's a lose/lose situation. The oil companies can lower their output and overall costs, doing which directly leads to higher market prices for their products. It's insane, but this is maybe the one instance where working less winds up making you a lot more in the end. This is where the government needs to step in and doing some regulating, as there is no appreciatable way for the market to regulate itself at this point. People who know my handle know how much I hate the government meddling with anything, but pulling out your bikes or trading in your Buick for a Prius isn't going to jack squat for the people who will be hit the hardest by these rising costs: those at or below the poverty line. They drive junkers (and feel blessed to have anything) and rising petroleum costs not only effects passenger fuel prices, but the costs of anything that needs to be shipped as well. Prices at the grocery stores will go up (they already are, take a look at heavier items like soda and produce prices) as well as energy costs, which will only continue to rise as people begin turning up their AC units, trying to avoid heat stroke.
If things keep going this way, this summer is going to make like the Katrina days look tame in comparison. So hows bout writing all those wonderful new politicians you just elected in the last round, huh? The dems are all about the little guy and hate big business right? Well, business doesn't get much bigger then the oil companies, and it doesn't get much littler then the poor family getting raped at the grocery store and the gas station, playing that ***** up chicken or the egg-game of 'how do I pay for groceries if I can't drive to work, but how do I pay for gas if I spend our money on groceries?' - MisterWhite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Yea, but you live in Hawaii so nobody's going to feel sorry for you!
- shableep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7well damn it. now my average mileage piece of ***** car is not only a piece of *****, it's economically obsolete.
- bobcrotch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9We need to focus more on OPEC and the rest of the oil companies, not just the President.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6And yet somehow Exxon just keeps posting record profit after record profit. $10 billion in four months of pure profit.
Must be magic... - geoboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Or vote for a ditch and drive the economy into a Republican. It worked in Soviet Russia, anyway.
- iceman0113, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It's been over $3 in California for a long time now.
- TheCash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@capncornflake
You should head over to f150online.com if you haven't already. It's a board for truck owners, and right now it's full of people talking about ways they are making their trucks more fuel efficient. Everything from Rangers to 350's get discussed, so don't let the site name fool you. A lot of guys have had good luck with reprogrammers, aftermarket air intakes, and modified exaust systems, but so far the best and cheapest advice seems to be to just do like you're doing and keep those rpm's under the 25 hash. I'm thinking about adding an airintake, as it's the cheapest of the mods, running between 200-300 depending on make and model, but people are seeing improvements of 2-3mpg with them so I think it's worth it.
Anyway, check it out if you're curious. - lburgguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5We in America have it good. I do however grow tired of all the BS about alternative energy sources that the govt. and others keep cramming down our throats. Nothing beats the energy you get out of oil, and the alternatives all require oil to produce: ethanol, hydrogen, biodiesel. I believe in peak oil and hell if we aren't there now. It's going to take years of sustained higher oil prices to get continued backing for the huge resources of oilshale we have in the west. Once that gets rolling we'll have fuel independence but we will never see gas this cheap again.
And it always get me, people bitch and moan about the price of gas but they spend $75/month on cable and eat out five times/week. Sorry but gas needs to be painfully expensive to get us to change our habits. - G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4YA RLY
- haydesigner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@lieutenantmudd: "But my point still stands. If you put the bulk of your money into freeways inside of subways and bus lines, you deserve what you sow. California is the biggest economy among the States, they can afford to build world class mass transit, but they've never built it. They deserve the consequences of too many cars."
You've obviously never actually been to most of S.Cal, have you? Because if you had, you'd realize that most of the problems in building mass transits in the large cities have nothing to do with the amount of people or the amount of cars... or even the amount of roads.
[hint: Topography. It ain't flat here like the Midwest] - tidu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I joined the Facebook group. Now I'm just gonna have to align my gas purchases so one does not fall on May 15th.
- selrahc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You know a horse has to eat whether you are riding it or not. I wonder how food and shelter costs actually compare
- mrfreeziexp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Which one of the presidential candidates promises lower gas prices?
- mattym, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10It's a good thing we started a war to secure oil.....
It's good thing we started using ethanol in our gasoline, which makes the gas less efficient, thus requiring more frequent fillups...
It's also good that ethanol was introduced to lower bad emissions, but has now been shown to be worse than straight gasoline....
It's a good thing for a country with such bright minds, we are consistently doing retarded things. - pktgumby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Too late...
- mwosh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Is it just me, or has this crept up real quietly?
- Ace25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yup, been paying over $3.50 a gallon for a couple months now. I think I just paid $3.60/gal on Monday. I am really regretting getting the Civic Si now.. only takes premium, and I get 18/mpg hiway. Worst Civic ever for gas mileage.
- diulei, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4While I believe public transportation is great and America should try to invest in it more (outside of NYC and other major urban areas), it just doesn't make sense because of how the country has been built with the so-called American dream and our McMansions. It works great when you can walk downstairs and hop on the train or bus, not if it takes 10-15 minutes to just walk out of your neighborhood.
- lieutenantmudd, on 10/12/2007, -11/+14Well, after you factor in the billions in taxes to support wars and subsidies to keep our pump prices low, we pay end up paying about the same.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So move.
- bobcrotch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Oh you haven't got any yet? You must have missed the memo...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3$1.27/liter in Vancouver good thing we have a decent public transit system
- bigtoe416, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I bike to work daily and yesterday when I was filling up my truck with gas I couldn't help but giggle at everybody else shaking their heads at the gas prices. They're all such tools of society, unable to escape their cars. It's funny and sad at the same time.
In the meantime, you all should bike to work on bike to work day.
http://www.bayareabikes.org/btwd/index.php - jthoske, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm glad Exxon Mobil posted over a ONE BILLION dollar profit last quarter. I bet all of the 6 and 7 figure bonuses going out to their Executives are really nice (For them! :( )
- pktgumby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You mean get out of my chair? Surely you jest...
- DesolataX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4$1.15 /l in Canada has made me consider doing that... but I love driving :(
- Rhine23, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7You do know that gas is cheaper during the winter for a reason? It just happens to be when the elections happen here in the United States, so it HAS to be some sort of government conspiracy. When in truth it is not, they're two different blends of gasoline, one for the winter time and the other for the rest of the year. Basically it comes down to the changing pressure in the gas tanks due to cold weather. If you want to get really technical into it http://www.peak-oil-news.info/winter-gasoline-prices/. Gas is not cheaper just because it is election time, It happens every winter for a reason. Go back to your little conspiracy hole and make a new tin foil hat. Science is only convenient for some when they need it to go their way.
