- msaleem, on 12/23/2008, -4/+49Screw shoplifting man, I was robbed at gun point couple weeks back. When the underprivileged get desperate, crazy things can happen.
- michaelpinto, on 12/23/2008, -3/+35Sadly my guess is that we'll see more violent crime (muggings, etc.) increase as well just as police patrols are cut back.
- doublefelix, on 12/23/2008, -9/+39The veil on our brand of capitalism has been lifted. Everybody is stealing, it's just a matter of scale.
- braininabox, on 12/23/2008, -1/+24Here in Indiana...all shoplifting theft charges are identical: Class D Felonies. Which means that if you steal a 50cent candy bar, you will get nearly the exact same punishment as if you had stolen a $99,000 diamond necklace.
So all you people in Indiana: DO NOT SHOPLIFT. Its an automatic, mandatory 6months-3years in prison :/
Just some legal advice
Happy Holidays
;) - scully32, on 12/23/2008, -3/+26Dick Johnson has problems sleeping?
- drinkthepill, on 12/23/2008, -1/+234.99 for sleeping pills? He should have gone with the generic.
- inactive, on 12/23/2008, -2/+21What if casual shoplifting becomes massive looting?
- mjrpes, on 12/23/2008, -2/+21Investors made billions in bonuses off of false profits that ended up being one big Ponzi scheme (read Paul Krugman's op-ed a couple of days ago)... and this guy gets arrested because he comes up a dollar short for medication. Not say what this guy did was right; just that the world is ***** up.
- Jsmuli2, on 12/23/2008, -1/+17This just in, hard economic times leads to more people doing bad/illegal things.
/NO ***** - manjar, on 12/23/2008, -0/+13I think you meant to say "so be sure to steal the $99,000 diamond necklace".
- pwnstar182, on 12/23/2008, -0/+12I work at Wal-Mart at the customer service desk. I get to see several of these bastards a day and it makes me sick. It surprises me how persistent they are, even when it's blatantly obvious they stole something.
- TheUngod, on 12/23/2008, -1/+13Hey it's not just the underprivileged. The overly privileged will have to stop flying in personal jets sometime I bet. When that happens all hell will break loose and they'll go crazy, Bateman style.
- PoizonFrog, on 12/23/2008, -1/+12I'm more concerned with the theft by Wall St. and the Fed.
- slvrbullet87, on 12/23/2008, -3/+14Maybe you shouldnt have a fake ID
- eastwood24, on 12/23/2008, -6/+17The United States makes over 15 million arrests a year (land of the free eh). The majority of these arrests are for non-violent and non-theft related crimes. Since virtually every state and local gov't is experiencing budget shortfalls, let's re-tool our focus towards actual crimes and stop enforcing nanny measures. (also on a random tangent, F**k the for-profit-prison system).
- LondonBridge, on 12/23/2008, -2/+12The sad reality of people's life...
- JackpotCity, on 12/23/2008, -3/+12It's the have's and the have nots. Sadly with current economic conditions, the have nots are increasing at an alarming rate as more and more people find it impossible to stay afloat.
- AbsurdParadox, on 12/23/2008, -3/+12I realize you mentioned "our brand" of capitalism, but I just wanted to make it clear that theft is NEVER capitalism. Theft is theft. Capitalism is voluntary trade.
- Bermygoon, on 12/23/2008, -0/+9It is one this to shoplift to survive but this guy shop lifted sleep medicine!?
Americans are going to have to deal with some bitter reality, they can't have everything they want.
Instead of shoplifting from GAP because you 'need' stuff to survive why not try shopping at the salvation army or do without? Although that would be demeaning for the average American, much better too steal. Our grandparents saved tinfoiled to make it though the depression, it is time for people to buck up and do without.
I have no pity for anyone that steals unless it is because they don't have the basics to survive and they aren't able to get help from the commuity, friends or family.
Stealing is not a victimless crime that is for sure. - solid12345, on 12/23/2008, -7/+16Oh boohoo, cry me a river. I'm sorry, while I do feel for the occassional poor single mother who needs a helping hand from time-to-time, fact is trash is trash. How many of these "underprivileged" people do you find gambling their paychecks away at the local Casino or complain they can't afford insurance yet they can afford cigarettes and a 12 pack of Bud?
Whatever happened to personal responsibility? Did Will Smith's character on the Pursuit of Happyness rob a liquor store to make ends meet? Hell no! - AbsurdParadox, on 12/23/2008, -1/+10You might want to reread my comment. I defined the term for you already.
- oldhick, on 12/23/2008, -0/+8@Reedan, there's a lot more to life than work. How does it feel to be a jerk?
@staticfire, I feel for you. You're young and having fun and hurting no one and now people want to make you a felon. That DOES suck. Certainly we all have personally responsibility and this no ones fault but your own, however, that doesn't change the fact that what you've done shouldn't follow you around the rest of your life by making you a felon. Best of luck and Christmas miracles can happen! - ProfessorRiffs, on 12/23/2008, -0/+8Seems to me that the problem is, more often than not, people thinking they need the things they can't afford.
- oldhick, on 12/23/2008, -0/+8Sounds like you and your friends don't really respect anyone but yourselves. Maybe you should think about getting new friends or talk to them about selfishness and self respect. It's a lot more fun to be a man and do what's right. I could care less about your grow operation as that is a victimless crime, but the rest is just embarrassing.
- thallium205, on 12/23/2008, -0/+8That will never happen... the government hates competition.
- starslinger72, on 12/23/2008, -1/+8but the character that movie was based off of was not nearly as good a person as smith's character in the movie.
- FasterGun, on 12/23/2008, -0/+7How does it feel to be an insufferable dick?
- rugbyguide, on 12/23/2008, -0/+7@Reedan Looks like 75k still doesn't buy you class or humility.
- inactive, on 12/23/2008, -1/+8Millions of ninety-nine per centers sit in a jail cell or are on probation violation for victim less drug crimes. Thus allowing the violent offenders on the street quicker.
Meanwhile, the one-per centers fleese the middle-class for billions through govt endorsed "bailouts"!
Who are the "muggers" again? - solid12345, on 12/23/2008, -4/+10As if people don't steal in socialist or communist countries?
- homescrubb, on 12/23/2008, -0/+6I'm in.
- CTK14A, on 12/23/2008, -0/+6You're correct, statistically.
We'll also see more criminals (read: not drug offenders) get parole or probation instead of incarceration as state tax revenue is pinched...
Also, less likelihood of your stolen goods being recovered as man hours are cut back... - eastwood24, on 12/23/2008, -0/+6Okay, I was referring to privately owned prison systems, but whatever.
- Macgyrl64, on 12/23/2008, -9/+15It's been proven in other countries and written in journals. The more destitute or poor the individual the more often they will "break the rules" to survive. House thefts and muggings, Chaos and riots, It's pure survival on a very animalistic sense. People become desperate and when you have nothing, you risk nothing. A jail cell is far better place than a subway grate or cardboard box, at least your'e dry, have food and a toilet with paper.
America needs to start working on itself and get it's nose out of other countries arses. The rich need to start investing in us the American people and forgo making yet another million they can't take with them, or perhaps it's just about time for Robin Hood to come back in multiple form. If the rich aren't going to share then perhaps they need to be pursuaded. - rootnik, on 12/23/2008, -3/+9I have to agree with that logic. Theft is theft, whether it is a candy bar or a diamond necklace.
Now, excuse me while I find some mp3s to download... - oldhick, on 12/23/2008, -0/+6How do you contain all that love you have for your fellow man? I am 100% against wealth redistribution by legislation, however, I also love people and killing someone so I have more money really isn't in my playbook.
People need help and we should voluntarily want to reach out to them. - inactive, on 12/23/2008, -2/+8I only shoplift because i feel silly cashing out with 5 bottles of cough medicine, and 10 cans of whipped cream
- aenima987, on 12/23/2008, -0/+6And comparing real life to movies is stupid anyway.
- orbit1979, on 12/23/2008, -0/+5Yup. Steal 50 cents and go to prison for 3 years. Steal $50 Billion and get house arrest (and keep most of the money you stole). Theft is theft depending on who defines what theft is.
- awtripp, on 12/23/2008, -1/+6I see what you did there.
- staticfire, on 12/23/2008, -2/+7damn you all are so quick to judge, you think that a 20 year old should not be allowed to drink alcohol?
- wifirewire2, on 12/23/2008, -1/+6Gotta remember that people need to maintain the 'lifestyle' of America that's beaten into our brains as the acceptable way of life.
- Neiliosullivan, on 12/23/2008, -0/+4Nashville Indiana ftl.
- NoLibertarians, on 12/23/2008, -9/+13I don't buy this guys story for one second..It a mere excuse. I spent 40 years in retailing, helped in thousands of shoplifting arrests, and NEVER ONCE found a person who did not have the funds on them to pay for what they stole..Only exception were pros who stole extremely valuable merchandise..Like this guy of course, they all had an excuse !!
- CTK14A, on 12/23/2008, -1/+5@deathspeth
Hi! This is the rest of the country. You know that whole 'subprime mortgage' mess? You know, people who couldn't afford fancy houses successfully purchasing fancy houses? Yeah... we need to have a chat about your spending habits... - cubicledrone, on 12/23/2008, -3/+7"Whatever happened to personal responsibility?"
Probably the same thing that happened to employer responsibility. - spyd3rweb, on 12/23/2008, -3/+7Conceal and carry at work would be nice.
- shadowspawn, on 12/23/2008, -1/+5I don't steal. I believe in karma.
But when I went to the supermarket and the oxtails I bought for soup rang up at 50c/lb instead of their regular price (I bought the smallest batch, it was for soup stock for the kids), damn ***** straight I walked out of there, drove back, and bought 40lbs of them.
Screw 'em in that instance. Vacuum sealed them all.
It was an error in their DB. I wouldn't stoop to UPC overlays, however, but damn it's easy to save money using them if you know what you are doing. - inactive, on 12/23/2008, -2/+5Ahhh retail loss prevention. The worst job I ever held in my life was a 14 month stint as a loss prevention flunky at a K-Mart store right after I got out of the Marines. I was told, in no uncertain terms, by the store manager after I was hired that I was to only watch blacks because they were the only ones who shoplifted. I was also told to ignore the LP rulebook and stop any black that I suspected had stolen something, even if I didn't actually see the person conceal the merchandise.
- inactive, on 12/23/2008, -1/+4An odd item to steal. Most likely he was stealing the medication to abuse it. It is cheaper than a six pack of beer. Not really a poster child for deprivation in the Obama Depression. Try again NYT.
