- dball48, on 07/16/2009, -3/+25Are they going to make a billboard that says "$1,000,000.00 spent on advertising"?
- govsucks, on 07/16/2009, -9/+31Giving a human being a job at 50,000 a year for 20 years = 1 million dollars
But hey, this is a much better use and it will create jobs! /s - scriptcoder, on 07/16/2009, -2/+23FTA: "Still, a NYDOT spokesperson defended the signs, saying they show the transparency of the government in spending the stimulus dollars."
Um, why not just put it on a website? Better yet the information is available through public record. This is just advertising to say "Our government is doing something so remember to elect us next time." Some middle-manager somewhere thought this would be a good use of money, jeez. - Richandler, on 07/16/2009, -5/+23So how is this new road or these signs improving the economy. The jobs were temporary and the road apparently already existed.
- holyskeleton, on 07/16/2009, -1/+19as if we don't already have enough signs on the road
- yocouchdigga, on 07/16/2009, -1/+15I use "military industrial complex" in a derogatory way and I'm a vet.
Please stop the "neener, neener, my party's better than yours" *****. It's really, really tired and doesn't work for anyone. You'd have to be blind to think the majority of the talking heads we have in office are out for our best interests. It's all about the money. - novenator, on 07/16/2009, -4/+18I have friends in the military, one just got back from Iraq in fact, so don't tell me liberals hate the military, just the corrupt industry behind it. Remember it was a *republican* president that first warned us of the dangers of it.
- diggopolous, on 07/16/2009, -4/+14 Many of the comments I read here reveal the true definiton of pessimism: those who see the cost of everything and the value of nothing.
- archiesteel, on 07/16/2009, -2/+12"about the only people that use the words "military industrial complex" in a derogatory way are liberals who hate the military."
So Dwight D. Eisenhower was a liberal who hated the military?
The only reason govts. are spending money to show the benefits of the stimulus package is because of all the wingnuts who constantly say this is wasted money. In other news, the recession is showing signs of ending, confirming that Obama's economic policies were sound.
/crosses fingers while waiting for conservative heads to 'splode... - harrisbradley, on 07/16/2009, -3/+11Man, The Onion makes me laugh every time... I read... uh, wait a second.
- L0t3k, on 07/16/2009, -2/+9They'll list that on Recovery.gov, which they're spending $18 million on.
That's an $18 million dollar website, to tell you where they're spending your money. Chew on that for a while. - inactive, on 07/16/2009, -4/+11Obviously money well spent. .. . .
"More money then brains" comes to mind. - kemp34, on 07/16/2009, -4/+11The most simple way for government to be transparent and low cost is for it to remain contained to its limited role of policing against aggressive force and fraud.
Sadly, our government increasingly perpetuates aggressive force and engages in fraud, so of course "transparency" is going to be expensive and likely a joke. How often do organizations with questionable moral frameworks do a good job in policing themselves? - biotch, on 07/16/2009, -2/+9David ... would you prefer they didnt educate anyone about where the money was being spent?
Would you prefer people were in the dark about it?
Its a TON of money, the people deserve to know where it is being spent. - thelab101, on 07/16/2009, -5/+11I'm sure the family of the guy who runs the sign making shop is pretty happy. And the businesses that the family uses in their day to day lives. And the families of those businesses.
- MrColdheart, on 07/16/2009, -3/+9Unless your reading the news from an alternate reality no.
The Stimulus plan was designed to stimulate the economy with the creation of state projects. Projects by definition won't last forever but do create jobs (i.e. the new East Coast Speed Rail) - NorthMass, on 07/16/2009, -8/+14What a waste of money. Stuff like this should be kept to the local level, because you end up with ridiculous amounts of waste when this happens.
The stimulus(or lack thereof) fails again. Both parties need to stop with these stimulus plans(Bush had one too). - johndk, on 07/16/2009, -7/+13Nothing like spending stimulus money to fuel the propaganda machine. Nice move Obama.
- novenator, on 07/16/2009, -21/+26It's good that people know where these jobs came and infrastructure improvements came from. Besides, the armed forces and military industrial complex spend many times this amount on advertising.
- mywhitenoise, on 07/16/2009, -1/+6*than
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -0/+5Lulz. Some Obama lap dog buried this comment.
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -1/+6The signs are pointless and a waste of money. You can pay me to twiddle my thumbs all day if you want, would have the same benefit to the economy.
- realeskimopimp, on 07/16/2009, -3/+7They could have just sent an e-mail to factcheck.org:
http://wire.factcheck.org/2009/07/08/boehner-wrong ... - kemp34, on 07/16/2009, -9/+13How much of the "stimulus" money is being spent on useless bureaucrats deciding which politically connected groups will get stimulus money?
- BottledViolence, on 07/16/2009, -2/+6That's not the kind of transparency of government I wanted...
"Still, a NYDOT spokesperson defended the signs, saying they show the transparency of the government in spending the stimulus dollars" - inactive, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4THIS JUST IN!:
The government is fiscally irresponsible.
WHAT?!?! - MrColdheart, on 07/16/2009, -2/+6I don't think the stimulus was suppose to be a permanent fixture. I think it was suppose to be a band aid to help us out while we deal with the recession.
Though I would be willing to agree that roads and signs are cop outs when a more ambiguous project would promote itself and garner more support. - chrrie, on 07/16/2009, -3/+7My father's company actually makes signs, sign structures, and guard rail in NY. I asked him about these and he mentioned some specifics:
$1000 - $2500 to make each sign. I guess there's two sizes and the larger ones, found on the expressways, mentions ARRA
$2000 to install because NY wants the signs in place before the actual work begins so they need to make a special trip, sometimes across the state, just to put these up
But you figure it's a good time to be a civil engineer. The people in the plant are kept busy designing the signs and the crews are kept busy installing them. He's even brought on additional people (not just because of the signs, NY is using a lot of stimulus money to begin new construction projects). These are also all reusable and temporary; like the "Road Work Ahead" signs you commonly see - they don't create new ones every time. - publiclurker, on 07/16/2009, -3/+7But they might be gay and hate flag pins and we can't have that. Much better to bankrupt our country killing foreigners and giving handouts to Cheney's friends.
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -2/+6this is the reason america finally started to fail. and it will continue. corruption and retarded system of powers.
- Bloodwine, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4I don't know if it is the same everywhere, but road signs are often made by inmates in our prisons.
- themostimproved, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3Yea because there aren't more productive uses of stimulus money. Search "broken window fallacy" and learn that why resources need to be spent to improve current conditions, and not merely wasted.
- tacobueno, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3If the government is going to spend this money, it should be spent on projects that both create jobs and benefit the public. The signs may create jobs, but the product does not benefit the public at all. Fixing one of our many deteriorating bridges, fixing a damaged road, etc. will both create jobs and benefit the public by improving infrastructure.
- ApokalypseNow, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3Factcheck.org, the site funded by the Annenberg Foundation, who was (until March of this year) led by Reagan's Chief of Protocol and a McCain supporter? That Factcheck?
- kemp34, on 07/16/2009, -4/+7Plundering more and more wealth from future generations.... Priceless.
- runeasgar, on 07/16/2009, -3/+6Fiscal responsibility isn't free. This isn't news.

- JantjePietje, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3Now they have to put signs explaining where the money on the signs explaining where the money came from came from
- fabeetz, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3You think signs are outrageous? Imagine how crabby people will be when they find out that Transit Road now goes through Cheektowaga (the land of the crab apples)?
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -3/+6all of it.
- iancgi, on 07/16/2009, -2/+5Doesn't that make anyone ask themselves why they need to spend that much to tell you how they are going to spend the money.
One word comes to mind.... propaganda - inactive, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3Machines can make the signs on automation. Takes one guy to press the button.
- kemp34, on 07/16/2009, -4/+7You can create jobs by paying people to dig and refill ditches!
- robEstyles, on 07/16/2009, -1/+4Could have been worse than could have spent 2M to have a memorial for a dead pedophile
- chrrie, on 07/16/2009, -2/+5My dad's company is making these exact signs, actually. They've hired additional people because of all the construction work coming from the stimulus.
The funny part, though, is that many of these people [in upstate NY] are some of the most bat ***** insane republicans you could find. Like Obama is going to turn us all into white slaves republicans. Really, you should visit sometime. - ruddy4, on 07/16/2009, -1/+4i've got signs all over MA showing transparency. you just can't see them
- deema1, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2Ooooohhhhhhhhhhhh...Sweet irony.
- jgzman, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2So you suggest that it is critically important to spend the million dollars wisely, but are much less concerned with the seven billion dollars?
Tell me, when a boat is sinking, what holes do you patch first? - Cyberdactyl, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2I say we need to spend a few hundred thousand to determine if the study was done correctly.
