Uh, source? $13 CPM for display ads is the biggest load of crap I've ever heard. $13 CPM for VIDEO ads maybe, but not for banner ads like you see on social networking sites or for anything like Yahoo Ads.

Within the past six months, Facebook has acquired the right to access our profile information (Hobbies, Interests, Music) and give that information to 3rd parties such as Google to allow for targetted ads to each user.

This means more money for Facebook and 3rd-party advertisers, and less privacy for us =[

Strange, I always thought that the true monetary value of these social networking sites lies in the gold mine of information they have about 14-30 year olds. Marketers would kill for that kind of detailed information on millions of young people.

The title is a little misleading. The illustration, however, was awesome.

Social networking has been built on a free service and people desire not to be bothered by ads. I have a dot com marketing business and have spent hours of reading blogs and making comments. And even when I comment on the blog then sign off with http://hotcookies.net I am bashed as a spammer. Now that the social sites have made a free service and have rules about advertising. How are we supposed to feel sorry for them for generating a billion plus dollars each year?

I saw an advert on facebook today where in the title they used you're instead of your.

It said a lot to me about the quality of advertising on these sites....

What are they talking about. MySpace makes a huge amount of money in ads.

They should have a 'pick your sponsor' section on your page, so you can say 'Hi, Im so-and-so" and above it says "This person is sponsored by Coors Light" or whatever.

MySpace was kinda cool in 2006; then you soon realized on that everybody on the site is a narcissistic, drama loving, Napkin-Nights pic having, attention whore who feels that you should have your ears blasted off as some hip indie band auto-plays while their cluster ***** of a page loads.

It would be great if MySpace and Facebook fell flat on their asses. They both suck and are a wart on the ass of the internet.

Advertising revenue models are having trouble all over the place, not just in social networking. Zillow is a great example too- ad-supported real estate site, prominent player in its space, generating lots of hits.... and making no money. When your customer base is entirely people who aren't willing to pay anything for your product, it should be obvious that you're going to have trouble capitalizing on them.

When I'm on those sites, I'm kind of zoned out and not thinking about ads.... on the other hand

How do you tell what an ad is on those sites these days? People install so many aps and clutter pages up so horrificly that everything on the screen looks like ads.

I though they were doing pretty well with the advertising!
