- Alex2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19US National debt .. 10 trillion dollars, or a quadrillion pennies.
http://www.kokogiak.com/megapenny/seventeen.asp - salimai, on 10/10/2007, -4/+16Good job. Not only did you bring up an incredibly overused meme, but you messed it up too. Bonus points for you.
- lcllam, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Buried as inaccurate. I counted Ten quadrillion, six hundred seventy billion, eight hundred eighty-three million, eight hundred and forty thousand dollars and TWENTY THREE cents. Twice.
- sabertooth, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11i think the concept is best illustrated here http://penny.ytmnd.com/
- theMurdocVolta, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Heres the sad thing, it cost 1.8 cents to make a penny, so add that up in production cost instead of monetary value... Christ.
- charlie55, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8i dunno why we bother with wars when penny sears tower remains unbuilt.
- arcooke, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Ugh, I'm getting so sick of you people repeating the same ***** over and over. Now I'm just waiting for some comedian to come in here and ask if it will blend. What ever happened to originality?
- Error601, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I bet that would cause some havoc at the CoinStar machine.
- rune420, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Since the metal that composes the penny is worth more than a penny in itself in todays markets, that "worth" could be adjusted upwards.
- dopplerdog, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8First thing I thought of was.... 70 million dead in WWII. Visualizing how many that actually is made my heart sink.
- mediaphile, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6How do you make a cube out of a bunch of round objects?
- masgrada, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6You could make almost 150 Sears towers out of pennies (solid) for the same cost as the Iraq war.
- zeblith, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5No, those are the pre-1980 pennies that were mostly copper. Post-1980 pennies are zinc with a copper electroplating, so their value is something like 0.7-0.8 cents.
- metamethod, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5too bad the global economy hasn't even reached US$100 trillion
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_economy - palagrim, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Value in U.S. dollars = $10,000,670,883,840,000.00
Value in UK Sterling = approx £5.17 at the current exchange rate ;) - bootstrap, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4yes it's so unbelievable it traps your mind in a bottle.
I get it :D Farrell was great in that one. - antdude, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Very carefully. :)

- Nesh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3My, you have a lot of coins! Please wait while CoinStar catches up!
- rune420, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I did the math to make sure, and it actually looks like zeblith is right. I apologize. Here's my calculations:
According to wikipedia, a penny is 2.5g, of which 97.5% is Zn and 2.5% is Cu.
According to metalprices.com, the current price of Zn is 2.86USD and Cu is 7.41USD (per kilogram).
Thus the value of one penny is 2.5 * 10^-3 * ( 0.975 * 2.86 + 0.025 * 7.41 ) = 0.00743 USD
It should be noted that it looks like Zn was recently about 40% higher, so the value of the penny may have touched above a cent for a little while there. - indiephoenix, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Turns out "originality" could blend. Nothing is sacred on the internet.
- 1337Einstein, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3It's all in the wrist.
- ChayD, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Shouldn't that be "In Soviet Russia, currency stacks YOU!"
- masgrada, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Almost right there bud. The penny now a days is worth about 1.2 cents if the memory serves correct. There were articles recently when they surpassed the cost to make pennies for 1 cent or less.
- paulmyers00, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Too bad it's illegal to melt down those pennies...
- cjh24, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2that's what i though it was about when i read the title
- m3t00, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Digg seems more and more like Women's Day magazine all the time.
- kardiss, on 10/10/2007, -5/+71000 times Quintillion is Sextillion. Very sexy.
http://www.kokogiak.com/megapenny/nineteen.asp - had3l, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1So if the world economy is 100 trillion, the US owes, just nationally, 10% of the value of the whole world's economy. Just is what is mind boggling if you ask me.
- Audacitor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No big number table is complete with out a googol. I give bonus points googolplexes, though...
For anyone who doesn't know, a googolplex is a 1 with a googol zeroes to the right of said 1. - GoldYoshi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You forgot something....
That's over NINE THOUSAAAAAAND!!!!! - lorean, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Okay, someone should do a visualization for penny wrappers.
- ButterBuddha, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1And if Ron Paul is elected, that debt can be paid off in three years.
- Myonosken, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Holy *****.
- vroom101, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1hadn't heard that expression in a long time!
- ChayD, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Okay, next up, dollar bills.

Who comes up with this stuff O.o - tororosso, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Will it blend?
- 1337Einstein, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1oops
- thomn8r, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0>All those tiny fractions of cents add up
Yeah, they did that in Superman 3 - ChayD, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Ah, you got there first!
BTW what is the deal with that? You push the finish button, and all the coins have been sorted and there's no rattling going on and it still sits there humming for 30 or so seconds, supposedly catching up. Just gimme my voucher, already! - fhernand, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1why not link to the start of the series?
also, dugg because I have a small plastic bucket for my involuntary cents collection (damn, I never know what to do with that left-over small change... maybe I will make myself a coin-mail armor one day..) - schoate09, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1In Soviet Russia, Copper/Zinc welcomes HUMAN overlords.
- bdpf, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1This is spam. It has been noted the some retail companies and banks want to get ride of the penny. This would let them round up or down the costs of things. Just like they adjust the interest you get on your savings. All those tiny fractions of cents add up.
Now think of how the fractions of nickles would add up for them to keep.
We had the mill coins at one time, smaller than Penny's, to help with the cost of things less than a cent.
It would be nice if the mill was brought back to life, at least on paper of our bank statement. Then we would be getting more of our money / interest.
Yes boys and girls, the digits after the first two to the right of the decimal point.
They get to keep all the little pieces the collect from all of use. - ChayD, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1I for one welcome our new blending overlords.
