- Tmacman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Sure there's the potential for a really bad down side, there could be an up side as well. For instance, I tried to look up something on Consumer's Report, but you have to sign up for a month for $5.95. I only wanted to use it for the one thing and it clearly wasn't worth 6 bucks, but it might be worth 25 cents. So instead of paying for an entire month of a service I don't want, a small one time fee would be a good deal for some things, theoretically. Of course this is M$ so there probably won't be any up side. Forget I brought it up.
- Hergio, on 10/12/2007, -8/+22Alright Microsoft! Making it easier to nickel and dime us to death!!
- jstohler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Didn't MSFT try this once? Wallet or something?
- shiftt, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13>> "making it possible for companies to charge small fees for Web-based content and services they now offer for free."
leave it to Microsoft to help people turn a free service into a paid one. - ThisIsBob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7This from the guy who once emerged from his cabin in the woods and said spam would be licked by 2006.
- GMullen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Microsoft
For the Home, for the Office, for the Mobile, and now for the Wallet... - agimat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6So what? Let them copy all they want. If they come up with something cheaper and/or better then its all good.
- drewhenson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I see this creating enormous advantage for small business owners and business that sell extremely cheap items. If its cheaper than paypal/google checkout/credit card sign me up.
- UnknownCzar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8And google didn't rip-off paypal?
Anyways have fun digging me down, for my seemingly pro-microsoft stance... - GMullen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I saw this coming the second I heard about the point system in Xbox Live...
- baxtermaddux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4things like are a stark reminder that we are slowly moving away from the free for all experimental method of the internet, into capitalization of every single element of the way we use it. in a hundred years, we will look back and be amazed at all the things we could do for free.
another reminder is the fragile grip net neutrality has on the net. it seems that with the constant lobbying of the telcos its a real possibility that data delivery will enter a tiered system. its just a matter of time - doocefan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Okay, I'm starting to see the points made by other people of nickle and diming to death. I think it might really get out of hand with this.
- Mysk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I actually rather like this idea. It would open the door for amateurs to make some money without being forced to use ads, which are ugly and are almost always blocked anyway. It would be especially good for artists who's work consumes a good deal of bandwidth, or possibly for writers.
It could be more profitable for small timers like me than AdSense ever will be. - mootaccount, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Does this work in Linux? =)
- readme, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6doocefan: Xbox + iTunes = XTunes -> Xunes -> Xune -> Zune
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Hi Dean, I'm sockpuppet. My interests include socks and puppets. I like your photo.

This one, though... not so nice.
http://www.collins.net.pr/Photo/New%20York/Bedford/slides/DSCF0265.html - TexanPsycho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's really original, never been done before... Go Microsoft!
- sancho320, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"They'll probably screw it up first time around like they did with Passport version 2.0 will be of interest."
There are so many things wrong with this sentence, I don't know where to begin. If you're gonna blog... at least write good. - scottc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@sirloin No, you can't do that now, because the credit card companies charge the seller about 25 cents per transaction, plus a percentage. PayPal is even worse.
- readme, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Microsoft continues reading off their "me-too" business playbook by following Google's lead on Google Checkout. For a company that doesn't stop yammering about "innovation" when was the last time they came up with anything on their own worth a damn?
- tonto69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm glad anytime I read about more competition for PayPal. PayPal has screwed me too many times!
- understudy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2With the tremendous amount of SECURITY FLAWS Microsoft products are constantly riddled with, the last thing I want them trying to handle is anything related to my money.
_ - diggsIt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Please deposit ten cents for your comment.
- HairyPoter, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4As one said...
"The day Microsoft produces something that doesn't suck is the day they start producing vacuum cleaners". - smitting, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There are a lot of webapps I would build if I could get $0.001/request. I don't like relying on advertising for revenue.
- gallagherFTW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2microsoft wants uber micro (transactions)
- galaxy121, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Go for it .... I hate when people bash Microsoft for nothing ...... They are a company too and they are trying to make as much money as they can. If you dont like them, then dont use their products.
- alwaysmc2, on 10/12/2007, -9/+10"leave it to Microsoft to help people turn a free service into a paid one."
It's just a tool. If people start using it, call them evil if you'd like.
But anyway, won't this actualy be better for the economy? - doocefan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I alluded to that in another digg and got my booty virtually handed to me. But really, Zune? More like zPod.
- nullcodes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder how they are different from millicent. They'd have to make it easier to use for website operators and users alike: : http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?cid=14650791&sid=176411
I think the key in doing this is having cash because supposedly none of the financial providers wanted to sign on to altavista millicent. Oh also, the issuing of refunds has to be better/easier or people will get pissed when they pay for crappy content.
I think it's a good thing, cause today ads are plain annoying, long, and boring. This will make ads get more interesting and also people will demand better content since they're paying.
Don't want to be nickel and dimed? Don't go to nickel & dime websites. - fugazi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If that happens we will see a sudden rise in piracy!
- sirloin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3it's teh cell phone model of the net..
dont like your walpaper.. only 10cents and you can have this beautiful walpaper.. for 3 months..
google will show the first 10 search for free..and then just 5 cents each search after.
email a penny a pop
.. ok maybe wont happen.. well not untilll they lock down their os a bit more with draconian drm... er kind of like vista. DAmn they might be trying to make this happen. - sirloin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2great now i have to get accounts with payapl, google check ou and microsoft just to make sure i can buy your product..
now someone needs to make one that links them all.. ePay.. pay with one service and then it pays the merchant with what ever service it uses, if they use none of them it drops down to a credit card. - sirloin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2and you cant do that now why?
paypal, google check out, etc - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Given MSFT record on reliability of their products, we will see money changing hands really fast.
Sorry, let them plug all the holes first. - ray901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1...because MS are well known for putting their customers first over control of a market segment or cold cash.
- diggsIt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You hate people who hate Microsoft? That's rich. I don't use MS. I don't need MS. I don't like it when they do things, like lobby Congress for legislation that requires an OS be installed on a computer, before it can be sold. They are no better than Big Pharma, the Telcos, any large Bank or Credit Service, etc. They will screw the public any way they can, to make gains in stock prices. When you grow up, perhaps you'll better see that you are being screwed. Good luck with Vista... And don't forget to get all your virus, adware, spyware crap installed - updated whatever, you're gonna need it.
- liquidboy2006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I definetely think its going to change the playing field for website owners and online service providers.
Whats going to be fun to watch is how the banks and financial organisations handle this? Some financial institutions have been contempating offering throw away credit cards for online purchases, some offering locked down top-up cards to there existing credit cards, now if Microsoft offer cheap, safe online processing i guarantee they'll be up in arms over that..
Im assuming Visa and Mastercard are worried, they're set to lose a big portion of there earnings online (which all i can assume is huge seeing as i buy everything online with my Visa)....
I can't wait to see what other institutions think..
good times ahead! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 I didn't hear about that, but I knew it was coming when they started the "Pay as you go" scheme in South America.
I wonder how long it will be before keyboards are fitted with a little slot of our credit card? - HUKI365, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1While I agree - Visa doesn't have a monopoly. Ever heard of Mastercard?
- ecdkey08, on 02/21/2009, -0/+0Nice story from Microsoft
http://www.ecdkey.com - williamdyer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2This is an idea who's time came and went several times over. Nobody is going to like their computer to be an always-on nickel-and-dime-me device. It was an idiotic idea when the Internet was made of PDP 10s, and it is an idiotic idea today.
- bhar100a, on 02/20/2009, -0/+0si ti like paypal? http://www.bahrainpropertyworld.com/bahrain-living ...
- theprodigy2004, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2This is a biased article against Microsoft. Credit card companies take a 3%ish cut. If Microsoft lowers that cut, more power to them. That means cheaper products for consumers. Visa and Mastercard are the true monopolies today not Microsoft. Look at the top money grossing company in the world - BANK OF AMERICA aka VISA - not Microsoft. As much as people hate Microsoft, VISA incurrs a 3% tax on almost everything we buy today. This article also states that this will allow us to be charged per article because of cheaper rates. This is BS because they already do and can charge us for articles. I don't understand why a "2%" tax as opposed to a "3%" tax makes it any easier to charge the consumer. It doesn't add up. There is an anti Microsoft sentiment in the world. Microsoft is just a company who offers a product that most people use and has taken the market share. This is not exploitation. There is no monopoly currently. VISA on the other hand has a monopoly and exploits us.
- theprodigy2004, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is not to say that I dont support Mozilla, Sun, Sony, etc. The more choices the consumer has in a free market the better. Here Microsoft is giving the consumer another choice this is never bad.
- fishtoprecords, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So, Microsoft invents CyberCoin, which CyberCash offered in 1996. More than ten years late. Amazing.
- SnowFire, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Microsoft Corp. is developing on an online payment system that will be cheaper than credit card transactions, making it possible for companies to charge small fees for Web-based content and services they now offer for free."
Oh you mean like PayPal with an Evil Agenda? - chanceyDP, on 02/18/2009, -0/+0Great news for online money makers
