- toetagger, on 09/15/2008, -50/+215McCain helps 5%, screws 95%. Obama screws 5% helps 95%.
- bitfreak, on 09/15/2008, -32/+94McCain has said he would help middle class families, but in his massively distorted view of the people of the United States, he thinks the term Middle Class refers to people making a seven figure income. His tax plan would hurt me and everyone I know, PERIOD. Obama's plan helps 95% of the country, the vast majority of Americans. One more reason to vote for Obama.
I'm looking for the McCain/Palin drones to refute the math. Go ahead. Please. - TotalHalibut, on 09/15/2008, -1/+56That's a pretty good, relatively neutral article. CNN I'm impressed, for once, nothing better than a nice presentation of the facts.
- inactive, on 09/15/2008, -1/+53I hate to bring this up to all of you - but we wouldn't need an overt amount of taxing if the federal government could manage it's spending.
I know most of you seem to think that the weight of this country befalls the President, but it's not the case - Congress makes up just as much influence. Just because you SEE the figurehead the most does not mean he IS the end-all be-all. If you want to lower taxes, then start voting for people who aren't going to spend your money into oblivion. This goes for President(s) and for members of Congress. - wampalord, on 09/15/2008, -4/+49FTA: "And the McCain plan gives nearly one-quarter of its benefits to households making more than $2.8 million annually - the top 0.1%"
- mattstake, on 09/15/2008, -17/+61How the hell can we afford across the board tax cuts??? Can anyone explain that to me!! Obama's makes sense, and I hope the balance sheet is good enough to do it, but I think McCain's is just plain irresponsible - there's no way he could do that tax cut and if he did our kids might as well leave the country...
- bassman626, on 09/15/2008, -0/+32Thanks for trying to summarize, however I still needed to go to the site to decipher what the heck you wrote!
- Suzpaz, on 09/15/2008, -18/+48Wow... I get 300 dollars less tax!? That's great McCain! I wonder what that no-good taxing Obama would do! You always say he would tax me more, so I guess my vote goes to you MrMcain.
Oh wait, here's an article from CNN! Let's see now.
Oh sorry McCain. Looks like you lied to us! I get 3 times the tax break from Obama! Oh dear..... - waydee, on 09/15/2008, -3/+32People earning less than $161k don't contribute to society?
- RealmDown, on 09/15/2008, -3/+32I say give candidates a 50% deduction on campaign ads, but tax attack ads at 300%
- MacEnvy, on 09/15/2008, -1/+26It hurts everyone by increasing the deficit (more than Obama, even) while providing limited benefit to the vast majority of Americans. Those at the top who are getting an extra $700k will love it, but the rest of us are just pissed off that it's coming at the cost of increased debt for us and our children.
Borrowing from other countries to give rich people a tax break hurts all of us. - phydeaux70, on 09/15/2008, -29/+51Since the lower 38% don't pay any taxes at all, how can you lower their taxes even more???
Why don't you just print that you are going ot give them a handout...that's what it really is. - roddack, on 09/15/2008, -2/+24Either way it won't help curtail government spending so we will just continue to borrow money from the Federal Reserve and inflation will continue to undermine everything.
- wwwonka, on 09/15/2008, -12/+34plus a whole lot of "crazy" thrown in for extra measure.
- bbtweb, on 09/15/2008, -7/+29so how exactly is McCain helping the middle class?
- jamesalfaro, on 09/15/2008, -5/+27If you make less than $111,645 a year, then you will pay less in taxes under Obama's policies compared to McCain's.

According to the IRS, 89% of Americans report less than $100,000 in adjusted gross income.
http://www.irs.gov/taxstats/indtaxstats/article/0, ...
According to a non-partisan analysis of the presidential candidates’ tax plans, Barack Obama “offers three times the break for middle class families” than proposals of John McCain, who “would steer the bulk of the benefits to the wealthiest families”
http://www.nashuatelegraph.com/apps/pbcs.dll/artic ...
In 2001, McCain said of the Bush tax cuts: “I cannot in good conscience support a tax cut in which so many of the benefits go to the most fortunate among us, at the expense of middle-class Americans who most need tax relief.”
http://www.bloomberg.ru/apps/news?pid=20601039&sid ...
But McCain is now proposing tax cuts that are more regressive than the Bush tax cuts.
http://www.americanprogressaction.org/issues/2008/ ... - 1longtime, on 09/15/2008, -0/+18Freeze the Federal Budget (like Clinton did) and watch everyone sort it out in a matter of weeks.
Economic expansion and fiscal conservancy is HOT. Oh yeah. - MacEnvy, on 09/15/2008, -2/+19That has never been the case. Never, ever. You just described trickle-down economics, the horrible plan that we tried in the 80s. Back then, even Bush 41 called it "voodoo economics" because it is, frankly, a pathetic attempt at rationalizing the abuse of the tax code by the wealthy.
And despite giving it 8 more years of attempts, our economy isn't exactly "thriving" right now, is it? - MacEnvy, on 09/15/2008, -8/+25Stop spamming the same comment in every thread. If you have something legitimate to say, at least have the decency to write out an original comment rather than just spamming the same thing everywhere.
And to rebut, a healthcare credit doesn't do much good when 45 million people can't afford healthcare int he first place. You've basically just admitted that McCain WILLFULLY refuses to help the people who need it most right now - those with zero disposable income, who are losing their homes and can't afford to drive their cars, let alone be excited about a friggen healthcare tax credit that they wouldn't even see until the next year.
Give it a rest. Trickle-down economics only works for the top 5% of the country - those people that McCain cares about. The rest of us know that it's *****. - AYork, on 09/15/2008, -1/+18Sure, I love debate.
"The tax to cover [health care for] every man woman and child is going to be a w[h]opper."
This is a common error called "begging the question." The unspoken assumption in your statement is that the plan pays 100% of health care costs for 100% of the population of the US. Actually, this was the main distinction between Obama and clinton. Clinton wanted to do exactly that; Obama did not. Also, this is making the plan available; not making the plan mandatory; another distinction from Clinton.
See http://www.barackobama.com/issues/healthcare/
I invite you to read it "from the horse's mouth" so to speak, but here are the basics.
Summary: the plan is not 100% paid for by the feds. It makes the Congressional health care plan available for everyone at "affordable premiums, co-pays and deductibles." (i.e., you still pay for it separate from your taxes, just like you (or your employer) do now)
Some people will get help paying for it if they can't afford it:
"Individuals and families who do not qualify for Medicaid or SCHIP but still need financial assistance will receive an income-related federal subsidy to buy into the new public plan or purchase a private health care plan."
This is NOT universal, government paid health care. It simply takes an existing government health insurance policy, expands it in scale, and makes it available to anyone who wants it. They will subsidize it for those who need it, but still; this isn't paying the whole thing for even these some people. - dwrecktion, on 09/15/2008, -5/+21well ain't that the most low/selfish/un-American/un-patriotic thing I've ever heard. So much for supporting your fellow countrymen.
- drmangrum, on 09/15/2008, -1/+16You're confusing person and corporate taxes. Most people who make that much money have the company pay their bills as "perks." In exchange, they make less money. This happens all the time, especially in small businesses. The owner has the business pay for homes, cars, insurance, etc, and they pay themselves very little, usually whatever they need to buy groceries and such. As a result, their personal income is extremely low and therefore pay very little in taxes. There business can show very little if any profit, and also pays very little in the way of taxes. This is also the reason why most companies lease their buildings and vehicles, instant tax write-offs.
- MammasMilk, on 09/15/2008, -2/+16and you clowns call Obama the elitist...
- KidDynamo0, on 09/15/2008, -4/+18he was a POW?
- wampalord, on 09/15/2008, -0/+14Of course they're paying the most in absolute dollars, they have the most money. What about in terms of percentages?
Keep in mind there's all sorts of neat little tricks and loopholes these people exploit, having the money to pay for accountants that know the tax code's flaws. - dreicher, on 09/15/2008, -4/+18http://www.taxfoundation.org/research/show/542.htm ...

Not quite 38%, but not far off. - Jwoey, on 09/15/2008, -2/+15"Give them a call and ask them what it costs for health care costs for the year. Single payer with hospitalization, dental and one eye exam with one pair of eye glasses per year and missing up to thirty days from work."
Here's the problem. Do you really think the average person misses 1.5 months (average of 20wkdays per month) every year? That's the bulk of the bogus $5000 per person figure you cited. That and hospital visits. There's no way the average person has 1 hospital stay per year. Hell, I've never stayed in a hospital overnight (only one trip to the ER) at 24 years old. - wrmjr, on 09/15/2008, -6/+19This whole thing about the people who don't pay any taxes is a complete distraction. The proposal is about how the two tax plans will affect TAXPAYERS. If you don't pay taxes, you aren't a taxpayer. That doesn't mean you aren't a citizen or a resident or anything else, it just means that neither plan will have an affect on you because you already don't pay taxes.
Please don't let the far right take the debate off the topic! - oo7evan, on 09/15/2008, -6/+19Stop the Iraq war, that's how.

Debate over. - republicker, on 09/15/2008, -3/+15If history is any indicator of things to come(and it is), the candidate who lies the best has the best tax plan. Only idiots trust politicians.
- Wryly, on 09/15/2008, -6/+18Just think... all this calamity on Wall Street, and those low-info voters never got that drink with George Bush.
- inactive, on 09/15/2008, -5/+17CNN ? Great....anyone else see Palin/Biden revealed last night?
They made Palin look like Sex and the City with rifles, and spent 15 minutes on "Biden the Plagiarist." - wwwonka, on 09/15/2008, -14/+25I'm SOOOOO screwed!
I make over 5 million dollars and have...um...um..six...er.no wait...seven? yeah, seven houses. - BossKey, on 09/15/2008, -0/+11Trickle down works as advertised because most of us down here only get...a trickle.
- EComni, on 09/15/2008, -1/+12We've had already had these wealthy-friendly tax cuts under Bush.
And yet unemployment is the highest it's been in 5 years: http://www.forbes.com/afxnewslimited/feeds/afx/200 ...
And, the income gap is widening: http://money.cnn.com/2008/07/23/news/economy/middl ...
So, even with nice taxes, people lost their jobs and the middle class has gotten poorer.
I get so tired of people taking this simplistic trickle-down approach to taxing the wealthy (who own the businesses) when the past years have shown that it doesn't work. At the very least, it's not as simple as people make it out to be. - adairnic, on 09/15/2008, -5/+16Trickle down economics has worked wonders since the Reagan administration. Oh wait, the only people that are happy when a trickle down economy is in place are the richest 5% of Americans. While the richest 5% may generate economic growth, the government still gets most of its money from income tax. I'm just guessing from your username "fartcloud" that you are either a teenager and don't know what you are talking about, or you don't make a larger portion of your income from exercising stock options, capital gains, real estate investments, and other various means the richest 5% of Americans make their money, than you do from wages...if you have a job.
Trickle down doesn't work, sorry fartcloud =( - inactive, on 09/15/2008, -1/+12SURPRISE! mccain is in the tax bracket that will benefit the most from his own tax cut.
- oinyo, on 09/15/2008, -6/+16Create jobs?
Dell closed multiple factories and support centers and sent the work to India in the last year.
This is happening with many companies. Look at how many times you pick up the phone for support and get abu from the simpsons greeting you.
Why not tax the people that are already trying to KILL our country just to shave off pennies for there own greed?
They give nothing back to our country. All they are doing is building up India and benglador. Damn. Ignorant as hell. - 1longtime, on 09/15/2008, -3/+13I'LL DEBATE YOU ON IT, OH YESSIR I WILL, I'LL DEBATE YOU GOOD.
(hint: the top 5% carry more wealth than you can imagine... increasing taxes on them can balance a budget, even if it's expenditure is higher overall. To the other 95% of the population, the taxes would not change) - Jwoey, on 09/15/2008, -1/+11I agree with you. McCain was making a joke. He was deflecting when he made the joke because he likely wouldn't have come up with a good answer, but still... It was a joke. But we're picking a president, and a huge number of folks vote republican because they think they'll lower taxes the most. In this case, Obama's tax plan cuts taxes in larger amounts for a huge portion of Americans. As this thing says, if you make less than $38k per year, Obama's plan gives you a tax break 8x the size of McCain's. That's huge for someone making 38k. (which, btw.. is 8k more than I make per year).

4.5 trillion - KidDynamo0, on 09/15/2008, -19/+28So how long will it take before the McCain supporters mark this as inaccurate? Its almost becoming a badge of honor for accurate reporting on McCain on Digg.
- syda, on 09/15/2008, -0/+9I don't think CNN will go down because of the digg effect... and by posting a poorly formatted chart I had to go to CNN to figure out what I was looking at anyway.
- vade79, on 09/15/2008, -3/+12But...those were clear facts in the forms of numbers, have you forgotten what spin is or just gone complete retard?
- ghuytro, on 09/15/2008, -2/+11Trickle down economics doesn't work in a globalized economy.
The money from the tax breaks to "the rich" doesn't trickle down, it "trickles away".
http://umogul.blogspot.com/2008/01/trickle-down-ec ... - ventralnet, on 09/15/2008, -1/+10I'm not sure if this article is really bad for McCain. The average household earnings in the country (I SAID HOUSEHOLD) are in the $66K-$112K block whom see about the same benefits with both candidates. McCain's plan seems to show that no one really gets utterly ***** by taxes where obama (while we all hate the rich) kinda royally screws high income earners.
- ginestony, on 09/15/2008, -14/+23did you factor in the cost of the koolaid and the foil hats?
- lolcoderer, on 09/15/2008, -1/+10There already is "free" health care to all americans - but not in an economically efficient way... If you don't believe me, go to the emergency room on any night in any large metropolitan city. They can't refuse you for not having insurance. And the people without insurance know this and abuse the system.
As it is now, those of us with health care are supporting those without health care through the high cost of premiums.
The health care industry needs fixing. Period. And its not gonna fix itself... The govt. needs to step in. - bbtweb, on 09/15/2008, -1/+9@ QuadZero
Did you read the article? Did you read the numbers? Did you see where taxes are being cut and where taxes are being raised? Have you ever actually read Obama's huge document on where EXACTLY he stands on the issues?
http://www.barackobama.com/issues/
Judging by your comments and responses, you have not. Once you do, then maybe every time someone has to acquaint you with the facts, they don't have to give you all the foundational background information beforehand that you should already know before presenting such arguments as you do. -
