- TWGMichael, on 01/15/2008, -12/+76Yet another MSM article from a reputable source that completely ignores the one Republican Presidential candidate that has been stumping on the exact issue from the very beginning. You can't fix a crack in your engine block by pouring more oil over it. You have to replace the entire engine. The United States is the greatest economic engine the world has ever seen, and the crack in our engine block just gets bigger and bigger. The longer we ignore the wedge driving this crack, the more we hemorrhage. It's the economy stupid.
- blindhammer, on 01/15/2008, -7/+43The statement is perfect because it indicates that in the United States, understanding issues is seen more of a liability than anything else.
Even in the GOP debates, none of the candidates really respond to Ron Paul's economic arguments. Ron Paul may even be wrong but no one up there is educated enough to actually have a debate with him. They just shake their heads and snicker. - rarson, on 01/15/2008, -3/+30And these guys should be allowed to run the country?
It's hard to say that Paul is wrong. The theory behind everything he says is backed by facts and history. It'd be like arguing that the sun isn't going to rise tomorrow. One thing I'll concede though is he hasn't really talked much about what exactly he means by "sound money." Obviously money should be backed by something tangible, but what exactly, and how will he effect this change?
Still, you can't ignore the fact that he actually recognizes and understands the problem, so chances are any solution he might have will probably be a good idea. Especially since the alternative from the other candidates is to ignore it and keep running the country into the ground. - ostracize, on 01/15/2008, -2/+24"How can you solve the problems of inflation with more inflation?"
In an article on the subject of economics, how on earth could a candidate who says that be overlooked? - waluum, on 01/15/2008, -5/+26RON PAUL:
“I don’t want to run your life. We all have different values. I wouldn’t know how to do it, I don’t have the authority under the Constitution, and I don’t have the moral right.”
“I don’t want to run the economy. People run the economy in a free society.”
“I don’t want to run the world.…We don’t need to be imposing ourselves around the world.”

- pehpsi, on 01/15/2008, -13/+30I bet he knows how a nuclear ***** bomb works! Elect him, and you'll find out...
- spinchange, on 01/15/2008, -7/+23As any card-carrying fiscal conservative can tell the maverick Senator, Economics need only be a "faith-based endeavor" for him:
-Faith that tax cuts are not only the answer and medicine to all ills, fiscal or not, but also the best preventative medicine! (The corollary of this is the Cheney faith that "deficits don't matter.")
-Faith that generally all interests of business, large corporations, or concentrations of capital supersede the interests, or even rights, of individual citizens.
-Faith that private enterprise *always* does a better job than public works.
-Faith in Oil companies to make energy policy,
-Faith in Drug Companies and HMOs to write health policy. - CondoleezzaRice, on 01/15/2008, -3/+19But that reason isn't because it doesn't WORK, the reason is with the gold standard, the government can't just PRINT the money if it wants it to fund illegal wars and secret wiretapping projects. The fiat money system is excellent for tyrants.
- inactive, on 01/15/2008, -1/+16 Ron Paul is the only one who understands economics, and they call him crazy. Actually Romney probably does also but if he intends to hide that fact to perpetuate our rotten system does it really mattter what he understands?
- darienphoenix, on 01/15/2008, -1/+16"*is not an economist*"
Never would've guessed... - horse00rider, on 01/15/2008, -2/+14You know, anyone who could consider Kucinich to have a plan that is good for the economy obviously does not understand Ron Paul's message. Kucinich would make the American economy into a socialist trainwreck.
- rarson, on 01/15/2008, -1/+12The problem with tax cuts is they only work if we cut spending. Without cutting spending, tax cuts don't do anything, because any money the government doesn't take from taxes, they just have the Fed create, which directly inflates the rest of the money, including the money that you and me have. In other words, the government still takes wealth away from you and uses it for whatever the hell they want, but they pretend like they're stealing less of it.
- yomamaisfat, on 01/15/2008, -3/+14I'm guessing politics and national affairs are among the other things he doesn't understand.
- Wargalas, on 01/15/2008, -10/+21Well do you expect your candidate to be an expert on every subject? I don't expect him to be, however, I do expect him to surround himself with people who ARE experts in his weak fields to help offset this shortcoming. That's the way leaders work.
As a side note, if you all want to fix the economic problems we are facing, you're all going to have to get a few stupid "pie in the sky" ideas out of your heads.
Universal Health Care - Gone.
Medicare - Severely cut back
Social Security - Revamped.
Welfare - Make those who can work, work for the government in various tasks that need to be done.
Flat tax on everything - Everyone pays their own fair share.
Socialized programs - gone.
Sorry guys, but if you want to have the economy fixed, you need to run it on a budget. That means that meaningless programs need to go and expensive programs need cuts. Simple as that. - flavioribeiro, on 01/15/2008, -0/+11The gold standard idea is about making the dollar convertible to a scarce, valuable commodity. You don't have to make it convertible at the current rate of $915 per ounce. That would be unwise precisely for the reason you state: the US has printed so much money over the last decades that there's not enough gold to back all the dollars currently in circulation.
You can choose a conversion rate for the new dollar, and it will work as long as you don't print any more of these new dollars. Parallel currencies have been used before in other countries. I'm from Brazil, and we used a second currency in the 90's to stabilize our economy and stop runaway inflation. It worked perfectly, and would also work for the US. - rishubhav, on 01/15/2008, -5/+15"(Dennis Kucinich would also be good, but it appears his Presidential chances are slim.)"
And Ron Paul's aren't? - THEROC, on 01/15/2008, -6/+16Yeah, because a return to the gold standard would be GREAT for our economy...
/fixed - unlawflcombatnt, on 01/15/2008, -24/+34I share the view that Ron Paul would be the best handler of the US economy and the country. But John Edwards would be a close second. (Dennis Kucinich would also be good, but it appears his Presidential chances are slim.)
- fezzler, on 01/15/2008, -0/+9The "he has won several online polls" defense is the most humiliating thing you could say about your candidate. With the exception of, "My candidate is Rudy Giuliani".
- inactive, on 01/15/2008, -9/+18then we can switch ove to the Amero...mission accomplished
- kirstpo, on 01/15/2008, -0/+9People say that they don't expect their president to know everything, but I expect my president to be more educated and informed than the majority of the candidates we have today. There are many intelligent and charismatic people out there that understand economy, law, and science. You'd think that you'd want the person leading the country to be qualified. Unfortunately, the world and America is filled with ignorant people and people that vote based on "who'd they have a beer with" mentality.
- Sornos, on 01/15/2008, -0/+9That's like saying tennis is extremely popular after polling Federer's fan club.
- jmpeagle, on 01/15/2008, -2/+11do you honestly believe anyone can win a presidential election by appearing to be an academic? You have to appear "down to earth", you have to throw a few baseballs, do a laid back sport such as fishing or hunting. Americans in general do not vote for who they think will be the best president but who they'd like to have a beer with or who hasn't personally screwed them over in the past few years.
- orxor, on 01/15/2008, -5/+14I'm probably going to get dugg down, but if you guys want to listen to a candidate that really knows about economics may I suggest going to the media section of the http://mises.org website and just doing a search for Ron Paul. There are also several articles written by Dr. Paul in other sections.
- nitemonkey, on 01/15/2008, -1/+9This is why McCain has that stupid laugh when Ron Paul is speaking during a debate....he simply doesn't understand what is being said. It's a very common reaction to mask incompetency.
- ohiomama, on 01/15/2008, -1/+9yes, and mccain is the epitome of an open mind. i'd love to see what his "advisers" would come up with.
- capiCrimm, on 01/15/2008, -3/+11no *****, but why would it? Because of fiat money! So whats the solutions? Print more fiat money to ride the coaster until were super screwed.
It's better to start fixing this now then when the dam bursts. - inactive, on 01/15/2008, -2/+10Or don't spend 2 trillion on a war of choice? Nah, just get rid of medicare and social security to free up more money for even more wars. Yeah.
- ColonelJessup, on 01/15/2008, -5/+13McCain doesn't know anything about economics. But 15 year old diggers living in their mom's basement know EVERYTHING..............................................
- CannedMango, on 01/15/2008, -1/+8Yet he's leading polls in the state which is supposedly the most focused on the economy, Michigan.
Either the polls are way off base or Michigan voters don't do a heck of a lot of research. - garryw, on 01/15/2008, -2/+9How can he say that after marrying a millionaire to replace his first wife. This guy gets economics better than most.
- seanoneil14, on 01/15/2008, -2/+9those aol polls mean nothing. ron paul fanboys swarm all over those things like crazy. if ron paul wins a primary, i will personally give you 100 dollars
- imightbewrong, on 01/15/2008, -0/+7no its not that easy... Japan had interest rates at 0% and still suffered from deflation in the 1990s....read a book
- monkeyrun, on 01/15/2008, -0/+7Which is why you cannot be the next president.
- orxor, on 01/15/2008, -1/+8Why is he being dugg down, anyone care to refute his statement?
- apologeticus, on 01/15/2008, -0/+6How can you possibly say that when their approaches are diametrically opposed to each other?
- chieffan, on 01/15/2008, -2/+8Here's the problem with McCain... He promises to do get tough on immigration, health care, etc. My question for him is this - what the ***** have you been doing the last 20 years? You have been in a situation to make a difference, you are a senator from a border state that thousands of illegals travel through. Why act now?
- MacintoshSauce, on 01/15/2008, -0/+6I think any candidate for President should have a good understanding of economics. If they did we probably wouldn't have all this deficit financing.
- spyd3rweb, on 01/15/2008, -5/+11The only legal Constitutional currency is Gold and Silver.
- loki49152, on 01/15/2008, -0/+6Ayn Rand.. a disciple of Leo Strauss??
That's it. You're not qualified to share your thoughts on the internet any more. Put your keyboard away. You're done. - freehat704, on 01/15/2008, -3/+8Wow, I can't believe we have an honest republican!
- clark24, on 01/15/2008, -1/+6Unprovoked War - over?
That should be your number one because it probably costs more than all six of your other suggestions -- combined. - VitriolAndAngst, on 01/15/2008, -2/+7They appeal to the anti-intellectuals. The people who don't like anyone smarter than them. Consequently, we've got a lot of Republicans contenders, stepping over each other to see who can play up the most violent, "awe shucks, I just folks" message for the Left Behind ensemble that votes Republican these days.
- Nosnevets02, on 01/15/2008, -2/+7So, KMye, you propose the same system we use now? Artificially lowering interest rates which begs for mal-investments? Printing money whenever the government needs it, seriously devaluing our currency?
I don't really favor a gold standard, I favor a responsible monetary policy where we just don't go printing money. - lordmetroid, on 01/15/2008, -2/+7Mcain doesn't understand economics the number one most pressing issue today. He wants to be in Iraq for an additional 100 years and comitte 5 generations of young adults to do it. I dunno how anyone can vote for this donkey!
- Corrosionx, on 01/15/2008, -0/+5Here's how you can be smarter than McCain (it's real easy folks)
http://www.youtube.com/misesmedia - kirstpo, on 01/15/2008, -0/+5I very much agree that Ron Paul has not exactly stated how we get sound money. He constantly uses the gold standard as an example, but he is really saying that money should be backed by something tangible. There really isn't another candidate on either the Republican or Democratic party to debate him on this topic.
