- Radigg, on 04/29/2008, -3/+4Maybe Mr Buffet sees an increase in chewing gum consumption!
- ralphthemagi, on 04/29/2008, -0/+5Buffet's whole thing has always been to invest in companies you can understand. It doesn't get much easier than candy. Make it, package it, ship it and market it. He's a big fan of the kinds of businesses where you can look at their finances and actually understand where the money is coming from, and what the growth potential is, even if it's small.
Then you have the internet and technology businesses, which he'd probably advise you stay stay FAR away from, because no one really understands the market mechanics behind something like Facebook, or why it has a valuation in the tens of billions. It's all speculation. How do you monetize something like Facebook or YouTube? No one really has any idea. How do you improve the financials of candy makers? See here, we can just use this paper. It's 10% cheaper and just as good... better even. And if we combine these two companies, we don't need to have this other facility. It's simply thinking that has made Buffet a billionaire. Far to often in financial markets everyone gets into something based on speculation and crazy future *potential* profits. - t0x2c, on 04/29/2008, -2/+0om nom nom nom nom

- cowsgonemadd3, on 04/29/2008, -4/+3Wrigleys now introduce a new flavor.....M&M flavor that lasts and lasts.
- wellyuk, on 04/29/2008, -1/+1I think you'll find it's flavour, with a U.
- ShempRider, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Je pense que c'est la flaveur, avec un e.
- dsmx, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1B/S no gum in the world has a flavour that lasts.
- wellyuk, on 04/29/2008, -1/+1I think you'll find it's flavour, with a U.
- ShempRider, on 04/29/2008, -1/+17I'd be more than annoyed if they renamed the ballpark Mars Field.
- cwgannon, on 04/29/2008, -4/+2Meh, just rename it Miller Park South and be done with all of it.
- ryan899, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2Better yet, rename Miller to Wrigley Field North. And while we are at it, rename Turner Field to Wrigley South
- pojut, on 04/29/2008, -1/+5Agreed. Wrigley Field is one of the few "name-brand" fields that actually sound good...FedEx Field, MCI Center (Now Verizon Center, not nearly as good), Nissan Pavilion...not all sponsored places like that sound bad...some of the names actually have a rather nice ring to it.
Wrigley Field is right up there near the top, insofar as name is concerned.- ryan899, on 04/29/2008, -0/+13Wrigley Field is NOT a "name-brand" field. It was named after William Wrigley Jr who owned the Cubs back in the 1920s or so. Mr Wrigley also owned the chewing gum company. In a perfect world this new Mars-Wrigley company will purchase the actual naming rights and hopefully keep it Wrigley Field.
- cawpin, on 04/29/2008, -1/+2Thank you for posting that. I was reading the above post for some hint of sarcasm and found none.
- pojut, on 04/29/2008, -0/+3Really? I had absolutely no idea...thank you!
That being said, there are indeed still some stadiums (such as the others that I mentioned) that have a good sounding "name-brand" type of thing going on.
Again, though, I had no idea that's where the Wrigley in Wrigley Field came from...learn something new every day:-)
- designerutah, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1At least you don't have to live with the "Energy Solutions Arena" rather than the Delta Center! (home of the Utah Jazz!!)

- slvrbullet87, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2Cubs fans wont stand for that, nor would they ever call it Mars Field.
- TheUngod, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1They could also rename the game to blurnsball. If they're playing in Mars, why not?
- cwgannon, on 04/29/2008, -4/+2Meh, just rename it Miller Park South and be done with all of it.
- papavb, on 04/29/2008, -8/+2Warren Buffett raped me.
- michael43, on 04/29/2008, -0/+7you were asking for it.
- MegaloMatt, on 04/29/2008, -0/+3Show me on this bar graph, where the bad man touched you...
- Shadowgamers, on 04/29/2008, -2/+1In before Mr.T bursts through your wall with a tank, insulting your manhood and then promoting a chewing gum that makes your breath smell like mint
- michael43, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Juicy Fruit gum and M&Ms...they're as American as apple pie.
- KraftDinner101, on 04/29/2008, -0/+3Chocolate and gum, together at last!
- trollick, on 04/29/2008, -1/+11Misleading title - it is just some food company, not the planet Mars.
- digjam, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Oh really...!!!!! Damn it.. I was excited that someday .. Saturn might buy my company.. :(
- LilBoyLuver, on 04/29/2008, -2/+4I love when random news articles from days ago show up on Digg.
- davidkeithjones, on 04/29/2008, -2/+2I love when people bitch like it matters.
- tnoy, on 04/29/2008, -1/+1I love it when people care about what you think.. oh wait, that hasnt happened yet.
- jerryterhorst, on 04/29/2008, -1/+2"I look at it as two companies that see the opportunity to create a true global confectionary powerhouse," said Morningstar analyst Mitchell Corwin. "They become No. 1 in chocolate and No. 1 in chewing gum with a strong international presence and growth in emerging markets."
anyone else think the article reads a little bit like the onion?- wobudong, on 04/29/2008, -0/+0They're going to make the first non-fattening gingerbread house?
- linkerjpatrick, on 04/29/2008, -0/+3I'm sorry but I don't want to chew my candy bars all day long.
- pongx, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2Honestly, this is a brilliant investment. Humans have been eating candy for hundreds of years. This isn't going to end anytime soon. Now Buffet needs to invest in a Dental conglomerate. First he rots the teeth with coke and candy, then he builds them back. It's the perfect system.
- CedEx, on 04/30/2008, -0/+04 out of 5 dentists approve this statement! The last dentist was found dead.
- davidkeithjones, on 04/29/2008, -5/+1
- lonepinemall, on 07/06/2008, -2/+1does that come with naming rights to Wrigley Field?
- tnoy, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1According to the little news blurb on NPR, yes.
- lordmike, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2Mars, bitches!!!
- jamessavik, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Ummm, Mars bars.
- DeFex, on 04/29/2008, -1/+1mmm sugar and palm oil and chocolate flavored substance.
junk food at its finest. - HanSolo69, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1I always forget that, as a Virginian, we have big companies like Mars and Circuit City headquartered here. But every time I do hear about one of them it always makes me think that they should have a store on every corner. I want to be able to walk into a Mars factory and grab a Snickers off the assembly line. At the very least our Circuit City storefronts shouldn't look like burnt out warehouses.
- Synchro, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1What would the god of war want with a chewing gum company and what is Warren Buffet doing working with said god? I mean really.
- cortez_a, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1MMM...Snickers Flavored Gum
- digjam, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1So now we'll get Chocolate flavored Gum OR Cinnamon flavored M&Ms??????????
- DarthMalcontent, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Yep, just like the dog food flavored M&M's and chocolate flavored rice. Mars also owns Pedigree and Cesar dog food brands and Uncle Ben's (and Whiskas and Sheba cat foods).
- wobudong, on 04/29/2008, -0/+0You didn't hear?
