- diearzte2, on 06/23/2009, -1/+4I just signed a lease for a new place today, was checking Minneapolis Craigslist pretty frequently for listings. This is actually really common. Saw questionable ads left and right, followed up on a few just to see. The one I kept seeing was the "owner" claiming that the apartment was fully furnished and an agreement and deposit would have to be made/paid BEFORE I would be able to view the apartment. Apparently Minnesota is full of really lazy scammers that rely on people handing over cash before they even confirm the place exists.
Another thing I saw was "owners" that claimed to have relocated and wanted me to WU them some dollars.
The sad thing is that they wouldn't bother doing this if some people weren't actually making it worth their while.
And yes, I'm sure the lease I signed today was real. - Strenoth, on 06/23/2009, -2/+4I've been dealing with this crap for a couple of weeks. The first scam, which I repeatedly, was easy to spot, a simple search of the phone number did it. Really good deals on 4-bedroom place, no listed address.
Second one spelled fishy because of the super good deal to take over a mortgage, and the company (first step equity BTW) Googled up a whole list of complaints. Also, no listed address
Third one was easy to be suspicious of because of getting told a story about being out of the country, specifically in West Africa, but included an address that actually was for rent. It took digging up the actual owner's name and the property management company that ran the place to verify that the person advertising the site on Craigslist was scamming. This one was not such an outrageously good deal. - WELLDOITLIVE, on 06/23/2009, -0/+2You repeatedly what?
Spelled fishy? - Strenoth, on 06/26/2009, -0/+1Bah...
*saw repeatedly
*smelled fishy
Proof reading is a skill I need to develop more. - Hillsfar, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1You can't bring a hot date home to spend the night, either. So cling to that pride, my friend.
- TheSkunkMonkey, on 06/23/2009, -0/+1I've been finding over 60% of the generic looking job ads are just fronts for people looking to get a commission on credit checks. If you do a search, you will find there are a number of "credit check" companies that offer an affiliate plan. This is what drives these ads.
They are usually easy to spot, either there is no specific company information, or there's conflicting information between the job title and the description. The most obvious ones are the ones that list some gmail account to reply to. If your company is going to advertise on Craigslist, you better have your own company domain and email address. The reason they use gmail is that it's easy to setup an autoresponder that will reply with some garbage and a link to some site offering a service you need to pay for, of which they get a commission of course.
I have so much fun reporting those as SPAM. - brandnewx, on 06/23/2009, -0/+1Wow that's expensive. I thought it's around 200 dollars.
- diggopolous, on 06/23/2009, -0/+1Huh?
- stutimandal, on 06/23/2009, -0/+1Average rent of a 2 bedroom apartment in Mumbai is 600-800 dollars. It is not that cheap.
- dOOBiEx213, on 06/23/2009, -1/+2Seen this scam on Craigslist - it was a REALLY sweet deal, supposedly the old renter was moving out and wanted someone to take over her lease... there was just no ***** way I was giving cash to someone who "didn't have a drivers license because she lost it." The woman I spoke with on the phone (***** scammers used a woman to seem less suspicious) agreed to meet with me, but she became a little hesistant and said she'd "call me back" when I requested she meet me with the property's manager. Even went to Yahoo Answers to see if anyone had had a similar experience, but most of the answers were pretty useless. Looking back, I should have filed a police report seeing as I had her cell phone number. =/

- centran, on 06/23/2009, -0/+1wow, I guess no one feels the same way.
The way I look at it is that humans beings need a couple of basic things; food, water, shelter.
These scammers are tricking people out of one of their basic needs. They are one of the lowest scum on this planet. - inactive, on 06/23/2009, -1/+1i've been getting these ***** that reply to my resume submission on craigslist by saying i have to get a credit report check and that they recommend i get it done "here". wasting everyone's time. not to mention 1/2 the jobs on CL are just advertisements for the company and they don't even hire. :( fml
- invstmntguru, on 09/07/2009, -0/+0Go to this, this is definitely not a scam!~

- centran, on 06/23/2009, -8/+1People like this make me think of a very lovely Blue October song....
"Oh god then you awoke
You started screaming through the duct tape
Don't ever think I'm letting you go
I'm busy digging you a hole
Now you'll be living in a dirt room
Breathing through the straw of your own" - NickLee808, on 06/22/2009, -11/+2"Na-na-na-na, Na-na-na-na, Hey, hey, hey, We took your stuff!"
