- GregoryHarbin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+193This is a fantastic PR move on a level I'm still working on comprehending.
Go LucasFilm. Keep this attitude towards the fans and you may still have some in 20 years. - eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -1/+110If nerds do not have the right to swing dowels around and go NYERRMMM NYERRMM BZZT at each other on the internet then this life is not worth living.
- maiku00, on 10/12/2007, -4/+86Its funny how every time a company does something sane and sensible, it blows people minds. A sad commentary on the state of things.
- prot0col, on 10/12/2007, -5/+65In related news, anyone that noticed that it was originally missing will still not be getting laid.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38The only thing that will redeem Ja Ja will be heavy editing.
- jblade, on 10/12/2007, -2/+38And in another incredible move by Lucasfilm, Starwars would be continued, starting at episode 12, and working its way down.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30I knew there is still good left in you, Lucas.
Or just a very clever marketing strategy.
Nothing wrong with that. I just hope the upcoming TV series doesn't suck as bad as the previous shows. Take it easy with the teddy bears and whimsical sidekicks, will you please, Lucasarts? - earthtoandy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24"These are not the videos you're looking for"
- gbobman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25Wow, respect for the fans. Take that RIAA/MPAA!
- Petrarch1603, on 10/12/2007, -11/+33Jar Jar Binks, you are redeemed
- Logicalx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26"In addition they are to use split screen technology to merge indiana jones within the star wars universe. Indy will be looking for ancient relics owned by legendary jedi knights."
cannot wait! - BostonVaulter, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21"Apparently the action was taken by YouTube as a result of a misunderstanding of a request to remove an item containing material taken from starwars.com without our permission. We have asked YouTube to restore any works that they inadvertently removed."
So apparently it was all just a little misunderstanding. - TheWalkingDude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16What about these lost scenes from Star Wars: A New Hope?
http://digg.com/movies/Lost_Scenes_From_Star_Wars_A_New_Hope
They have never been released on DVD. - natterca, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Jar-Jar can be redeemed with hollandaise sauce and dill - it's excellent with fried fish.
- roadies, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12It's a trap!
- GregoryHarbin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11It's a Starwars.com blog entry, hod. It's official LFL info.
- SqueakyWheel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I thought parody was within the fair use rights. Why is this so courageous?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I find your lack of faith disturbing.
- SirNuke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Man, George. Every time we think we have you figured out...
- BluKnight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9It makes sense. Fans are what drive Star Wars. Without its fan base, it would be nothing. Who doesn't quote the movies from time to time? (Well, that and Comic Book Guy, "Oh, I've wasted my life.")
Youtube provides a great source of PR for Star Wars. It's free advertising as Lucas doesn't lift a finger. The fans do all the work for free. You tube will never match the quality of a DVD or the theaters. However, it will help ensnare another generation. - Teague, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Coolest thing ever.
- scoot87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7this can only benefit Lucasfilms. Letting fans appreciate their love for the Star Wars Empire will keep the industry alive, which means more money for Georgie.
- gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7[insert droid-beeps of joy here]
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I don't think you got that one.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6
They shouldn't have gone down in the first place. Lucas deserves no credit.
What if it was Lucas' legal department acting without his knowledge?
Lucas has said numerous times that he supports fan content. Lucasarts has never censored fan films before, even some rather offensive and offtopic ones.
There are several fan-made movies in production, one of those a full-length movie being done at a university in Canada. - scott1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Doesn't Geroge Lucas have an award for fan flim's?
- CKR600, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Feel bad for the techy who had to remove everything... a week or grueling work and then you get the call to undo everying. Someone got a well deserved "***** You."
- Bitz69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This really isn't unusual for LucasFilms, he always been known for allowing the spoofs, I think he might actually enjoy them himself, and it's free publicity for his stuff :)
- earthtoandy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Certainly that could be true/probably is true.
The Village Voice once sent a cease and desist to my friend concerning his user-submitted-content-periodical call "The Voice". Once the Village Voice found out the legal department did this they immediately told them to stop and sent a big lettering apologizing since they are all about DIY, the small guy, and that no one owns the types of things and ideas the copyrights suggest.
Legal departments rarely have an understanding of their clients, or souls. - Coven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Actually you're not far off. He does watch some of them each year. There is an annual fan film contest, and Uncle George himself sits down and helps pick the winners.
http://www.atomfilms.com/af/spotlight/collections/starwars/ - ase111, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This is the kind of corporate behavior everyone should strive to follow. Show respect for the fan base, and you shall see rewards in it. Truthfully, there is no harm in it being up there. By seeing this they earn the respect of many fans and it promotes a little hype for them (or at the very least does no harm).
Go LucasFIlms. - dagonweb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8One the relics he discovers would be a bit of borg technology.
- amplifrier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Lucas has a loyal fan in me for this!
best thing anyone could do is support him for this.....vote with your dollars - subscribtion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That's pretty solid of them.
- earthtoandy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If you read comments above you will see it seems to of been a misunderstanding concerning starwars.com content that appeared. LucasFilm worked fast to make sure the content that was removed incorrectly was reinstated. They did a good thing in an era when media comapnies have little concern and even target its fans
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6lucas was controlled by jedi mind tricks
- Araxen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Kudos to Lucasfilm!
Hopefully others see the light like Lucasfilm has. - GregoryHarbin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I got it, Osama. Not sure why it got Dugg down so much.
- MikeZila, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They've always had this attitude towards fan-made works. They even let people make starwars-themed games and such, using whatever content they want. So long as they're not making money, fans have always had free-reign.
- GregoryHarbin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think they're starting to. I know Comedy Central has. The Colbert Report is even recruiting people that are on YouTube to do stuff on the show. Believe me, the guys at Daily Show and Colbert know their clips are going online. It's free advertising.
I'm glad to see this trend, a far cry from the neanderthal response of the music industry to similar 'threats.' - shadekeiko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3wow, way to go George! I'm glad someone in Hollywood has some sense in them. Then again, Lucas has always been about the independent film making. He's Hollywood, but he's Anti-Hollywood. It's a strange paradox. Nevertheless, kudos. I can only hope more good comes from this.
- Darth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is beautiful. Its good for us, likewise its great for them. I hope copyright holder follow the footsteps of lucasfilm and comedy central.
- JoeyDeacon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4These are not the films that you are looking for.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3didn't i just see chad vader episode 2 there yesterday?
it was just 'kind of' a star wars parady :-P - FrankieB078, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Couldn't agree with you more! Took the words right out of my mouth.
- mozzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I now forgive Lucas for releasing phantom menace, midi chlorians and all.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4HURRAH!!!!!!
Go Lucasfilm!!!
George Lucas is younger than me. - ScofflawVA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this really is no surprise, i had the understanding that Lucas was always in favor of fan created work, and had a policy of fair use for all derivative works as long as they were not for profit.
- jimsym, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Marketing excellence at it's best.
He's got PR for Star Wars coming off YouTube.
More for going back onto it...
Then everyone loves him because they can see it online. So he gets more fans who stumble over it on Youtube.
Then he sells more t-shirts!
Hurrah, just love it - usp8riot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3And so it seems, the force is back with us.
Surprised no one has made the joke yet. -
