- JimSwarthow, on 10/02/2009, -0/+22the AK47 is made in dozens of countries by dozens of manufacturers, some licensed to do so, some not.
the long & the short: the AK47 and its scores of variants aren't going anywhere - Rudegar, on 10/02/2009, -1/+22"and competition from the makers of copycat versions around the world."
damn you didn't even have to read the article to unshock yourself :O - macmcraeart, on 10/02/2009, -2/+21when you absolutely got to kill every ***** in the room ... accept no substitutes.
- Someb0dy, on 10/02/2009, -0/+11Only reason I can think a slump in sales has occurred is because every man, woman and child in the third world probably already owns one.
- ThatEvilGuy, on 10/02/2009, -0/+11Chinese AK-47 overheats after one magazine and spits out bullets.
Russian AK-47s cost more but atleast they are original and reliable. - merlin5, on 10/02/2009, -0/+10If I could only have one weapon to have with me to face Doomsday it would have to be an AK-47. Unfortunately, Doomsday will probably be filled with marching hordes of AK-47 wielding fanatics.
*gulps* - graemee, on 10/02/2009, -0/+10They over licensed the AK and are now paying the price. They put themselves out of business by creating their own competition.
- charlietuna, on 10/02/2009, -1/+9I see that you are not that into guns.
Read http://www.thehighroad.org/archive/index.php/t-928 ... - charlietuna, on 10/02/2009, -0/+8Actually he has a point. The AK caliber is larger and is generally considered more lethal (hence the 7.62x39 can easily be used for deer hunting). The M16 is designed to mess you up at longer range, thus necessitating two people be dedicated to rescuing the wounded soldier. Two very different rifles.
- Kain4k, on 10/02/2009, -1/+9Нет лучшего оружия за калашников .. Даже М16 не сравнить с ним !!!!
- Rudegar, on 10/02/2009, -1/+9nothing like mums home-made ak47's hot from the oven :)
- charlietuna, on 10/02/2009, -0/+8Time to trade up!
- jboitnott, on 10/02/2009, -6/+13With the endless wars in this world - it just shocks me that these people aren't making money hand over fist.
- sildude, on 10/02/2009, -0/+5The 5.56 cartridge bullet actually fractures at closer ranges, causing more damage to surrounding tissue including vital organs. A 7.62 bullet might pass through cleanly leaving realitvely little damage.
However the lesser killing ability of the 5.56 is often considered a bad thing. - rebrad, on 10/02/2009, -1/+6Apparently the market says otherwise or Kalashnikov wouldn't be facing bankruptcy. The Czechs make a hell of a good AK too.
- charlietuna, on 10/02/2009, -0/+5Apples to oranges my friend. You are right that the AK is superior in many ways. Many Americans prefer the AK, but you are comparing a bulldozer to a motorcycle.
- daskro, on 10/02/2009, -0/+5Izhmash (the company facing bankruptcy) produces and imports the popular Saiga series sporting rifles and shotguns into the United States. In addition to this many US manufacturers such as KVAR and Arsenal will have these sporter rifles imported then convert them to their original military style. Izhmash only makes up a small portion of AK rifles sold in the US since there are tens of thousands of AK part kits imported years ago still around and built by companies such as Century, Lancaster, TGI, Arsenal, ORF, vector, and dozens of others. Despite bankruptcy it's doubtful one of Russians' oldest arms companies will go under and stop importing their rifles into the United States.
- daskro, on 10/02/2009, -0/+4Few tools and a little knowledge is a bit of an overstatement. You'll be investing in a few hundred dollars in tools and you do need a decent set of instructions. Really unless you are into the whole build guns as a hobby thing, it's cheaper just to buy a WASR-10 considering the cost of parts kits nowadays.
- theghoul, on 10/02/2009, -0/+4Oh yeah?
M4的是一个更好的武器。 - veriix, on 10/02/2009, -0/+4...or just one for each hand.
- dsem, on 10/02/2009, -0/+4at least there won't be an ammo shortage.
- ThatEvilGuy, on 10/02/2009, -2/+5Good time for some US manufacturer to pick it up, Kalashnison FTW!
- BabyWookie, on 10/02/2009, -0/+3Actually, the current Izhmah production AKs, such as the AK-100 series, are vastly superior in quality to any Norinco *****.
You can actually buy Izhmash AK-100's in the US right now as Arsenal SGL-20 (7.62x39 mm) and SGL-31 (5.45x39 mm). They are solid feeling, great looking and shooting guns. They are vastly superior to any other AKs that are currently commonly available in the US. - acdcfanbill, on 10/02/2009, -0/+3Well the M1 Garand was "the greatest battle implement ever devised." So says Patton!
- rebrad, on 10/02/2009, -4/+7The Chinese AK-47 (licensed) is far superior in quality and cheaper when purchased in volume than the Russian model. The Russian company just hasn't figured out how to cut it in a competitive world.
- rrife, on 10/02/2009, -0/+3Daskro, that I agree....I just build a stamped frame AK for about $600, WASRs are going for about $400.....I'm pretty sure that my homemade one is significantly higher quality than a WASR though.
- rrife, on 10/02/2009, -0/+3DrNemo, you can legally build firearms from raw materials in your home (for personal use) assuming you obey federal, state, etc laws. AK's are easy and cheap to build because you can make them from stamped sheet metal (excluding the barrel)....other, more modern firearms, are milled on a CNC machine so they're hard to build (although you can buy incomplete, non-firearm AR-15 & 1911 lowers and finish them with a drill press by hand).
- m0llusk, on 10/02/2009, -0/+3And the guy who designed the M1 got rich.
- oninbonin, on 10/02/2009, -0/+2I LOLD
- rrife, on 10/02/2009, -0/+2I used rivets ($25) and was by far the hardest part to install....had to borrow the tool to install them. I got a yugo-style pre-bent, dimpled 80% complete receiver ($40)....with the rivet kit, receiver, misc parts kit (trigger, stock, hand guards, piston, etc) ($150). I probably spent around $200 on the core parts (unpainted). The bulk of the cost was in the barrel & misc parts ($300), plus another $50-$100 on misc parts (sights, etc). I went cheap on the paint job and just applied bluing to the metal parts, the rest is unfinished black plastic.
- allisonV12, on 10/02/2009, -0/+2Maybe Africans are inundated with AK-47 left over from so many ethnic and thuggery conflicts, plus the liberation of Iraq most have freed up hundreds of thousands of weapons for the black market...maybe theirs no real hard cash for new rifles, trading for Blood Diamonds and stolen barrels of oil has its limitations.
- DrWordSmith, on 10/02/2009, -2/+4Bailout!! We can't afford our arms trade industry to fail!
- dicepackage, on 10/02/2009, -0/+2A WASR-10 is about the same cost as a Tokyo Marui airsoft gun.
- cherrysweet00, on 10/02/2009, -1/+2Oh, those bloody Chinese knockoffs! The Chin-ash-knock-off!
- inactive, on 10/02/2009, -0/+1NORINCO models SUCK
- Infowarsdotcom, on 10/02/2009, -0/+1Hmmm...I feel like I've heard this before...oh yep I have.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVfB3uxtB4w - daskro, on 10/02/2009, -0/+1WASRs are pretty terrible but for 600 I'm curious if you used screws or rivets, dimpled or non-dimpled receiver, stamped and shaped receiver or receiver blank, with or without duracoat, etc?
- xixphz, on 10/02/2009, -0/+1your point?
- diggdong, on 10/02/2009, -0/+1Der spiegel, haz boot?
- DrNemo, on 10/02/2009, -2/+3Maybe you can make an origami one at home but not the rifle.
- BabyWookie, on 10/02/2009, -0/+1I have to say that the Saigas are some of the best quality, most accurate AK variants that you can get these days. By the way, Arsenal and KVAR are sister companies. Their Izhmash Legion Saiga conversion are as close as you can get to owning a military style AK-10X here.
- porteronduty, on 10/02/2009, -0/+1If only Kojima would pay his damn bill they would be ok......
- ilcodinodivino, on 10/02/2009, -0/+1Achmed didn't pay them back!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uwOL4rB-go - inactive, on 10/02/2009, -0/+1its funny how this is the main gun of choices for the Taliban and tea party protesters alike.
- Frostek, on 10/02/2009, -0/+1Perhaps they could make plowshares instead?
- BabyWookie, on 10/02/2009, -0/+1Actually, the RF government is most likely going to bail them out.
- ViscidGobs, on 10/02/2009, -0/+1"The most popular automatic rifles in the world" Well only to some. They are less popular amongst the people dead and wounded. Maybe they should have a coupon day. Or better yet quantity discounts for the whole family. It is a sad day indeed when an automatic weapon doesn't bring a pulse to our cold dead hands.
- Rulex, on 10/02/2009, -1/+1Keep this kind of news coming.
I would LOVE to see any of the following, war profiteering ***** ***** file for bankrupcy and then go straight to any "pound me in the ass" jail, Halliburton, Veritas Capital Fund/DynCorp, Armor Holdings, Aegis, Washington Group International, Fluor, Perini Corp, Erinys, URS, Environmental Chemical.
***** war profiteering, these people are the worst specimens of the human race.
It's time for change dammit. - thebreach, on 10/02/2009, -1/+0I just get my AK-47s from the 7-11, much easier than making them yourself
