- NinaOdell, on 11/20/2008, -3/+47I've been laid off for 6 months. Welcome to my world...have some cheese.
- theNazz, on 11/20/2008, -4/+36Jobless rates not seen since the last time a Bush left office.
Dog bites you once, shame on the dog.
Dog bites you twice, shame on you. - nsmnetwork, on 11/21/2008, -1/+2216 Years ago was 1992. The president was George H W Bush who was in (what would be) his final year in office. However, a brand new president elect, who talked about change, just swept the election away from the sitting republican. This young man was a new comer and his name was Bill Clinton. History does repeat itself.
- Yimyack, on 11/21/2008, -0/+20If I keep posting on Digg, I may be next....
Gotta go.. - AndrewMoyer, on 11/21/2008, -1/+19If by "miserably failed" you mean getting vetoed by Bush with a Republican block on the override vote every time, I suppose you have a point.
- inactive, on 11/20/2008, -10/+25This is clearly Obama's fault...
- thenekkidtruth, on 11/20/2008, -12/+27The legacy of Bushanomics, and a direct reflection of the utter and total failure of the 40-year conservative experiment. NEVER again.
- dreamstoplans, on 11/20/2008, -3/+18I wonder how many of these layoffs include the way-too-highly-paid-with-too-many-expensive-job-perks executives, or if the companies are bothering to cut back on other wasteful spending before they take away the jobs of hard-working people just trying to get by?
- RenovatioInc, on 11/21/2008, -0/+15Makes me thankful I have a job.
- MindTrigger, on 11/21/2008, -1/+14What a dick.
- parax, on 11/21/2008, -0/+13It's stupid that the government only considers people unemployed if they qualify for unemployment benefits. Once unemployment benefits run out the government considers you employed, whether or not you have a job. They also count graduates as employed even if they haven't found a job. Only people collecting unemployment are counted as unemployed.
The jobless rates are probably 2-3 times higher than the reported rate. If there are 20 million people who do qualify for unemployment benefits, you can bet there's another 40 million that either didn't qualify [fired for a legitimate reason], didn't fill out forms correctly so their status is in limbo, or didn't even file. - Mpwns, on 11/21/2008, -1/+14next month it will be not seen in 25 years.
- Balanced, on 11/21/2008, -0/+13Dog bites you three times... um... We won't be fooled again.
- StingingNettle, on 11/21/2008, -2/+14The only thing that wasn't conservative about them was their fiscal policies. Bush had out spent every president we have had (last I checked that's the opposite of being conservative), creating larger government, larger corporations, and less freedom.
- herrshuster, on 11/21/2008, -2/+14I got the sarcasm
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+12mmmmmm government cheese
- tsopranos, on 11/21/2008, -0/+11Unemplyment is much higher than the government will let on...

- haydesigner, on 11/21/2008, -2/+13The trickle down theory of economics...
IT WORKS, WE SWEAR IT WORKS! JUST GIVE IT MORE TIME! Please, for the love of god, it's not our fault... the trickle...

STFU with your partisan *****, k thanx - Recidivus, on 11/21/2008, -2/+12Oh my god, someone has a menial job! Quickly, we must mock them for trying to provide for themselves!
What's the big problem with working at McDonalds anyways? What's the difference between that and...oh..I dunno, construction? Or those people who hold the "Slow" signs while the road works guys drink coffee figuring out how the 6 of them are going to lift a shovel? They are all unskilled labour, and they have their place in society.
Not everyone is lucky enough to be living the lap of luxury you apparently have, and have to take what they can get. Would you prefer them to collect welfare, or just starve? - borez, on 11/21/2008, -0/+10Same here in the UK. I run a nightclub in the West End of London and our takings have gone completely ***** up. Nobody is going out, especially on a Friday night. It's a very worrying trend to be honest, and I'm expecting 2009 to be one hell of a tough year.
- FyreGoddess, on 11/21/2008, -0/+9"You think Obama can turn around a global economic collapse?"
There's not a single person who can turn around the economy by himself. That said, Obama has the potential to appoint people who can help to mitigate what is already being called and is starting to become a crisis.
The real question is whether or not he can appoint the people who can help put our country in a good position to work with the rest of the world to turn around a global economic collapse. - Skooma714, on 11/21/2008, -8/+17The democratic congress promised to do a bunch of ***** they never even tried after winning.
Same *****, different *****. - bjornski, on 11/21/2008, -0/+8Yeah, it was called "Reaganomics".
And it ***** us hard. - AndrewMoyer, on 11/21/2008, -0/+8I think the "40 year conservative experiment" was in reference simply to the movement, not the actual moments they were in power.
- Balanced, on 11/21/2008, -0/+8Probably middle management, mostly. They tend to be the first to go in my experience.
- borez, on 11/21/2008, -1/+9Yep, I hate to admit it, but the smoking ban has killed us too.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+8Don't worry Brandoskey. It's not all its cracked up to be. Unless your parents are total dicks and/or you party with prostitutes and drug dealers all night, living in your parent's basement has its benefits.
- pintomp3, on 11/21/2008, -0/+8"Bush had out spent every president we have had" since reagan. republicans haven't been fiscally conservative in a long time, only socially.
- DiggJunkie, on 11/21/2008, -2/+10WORD I'm 19 and its been really tough for me to find a job any where I don't start college till January but the last year or so I've put in applications to nearly every place in this small town I live in. ITS FAILED I've had good recommendations and called the places everyday and I'm still jobless. I haven't smoked pot in 8 months this is ridiculous it's like I quit for nothing.
- bjornski, on 11/21/2008, -0/+7Well, your anecdotal evidence just disproved the entire global meltdown.
Awesome.
And yes, I'd like the LARGE fries. - Nonyaz, on 06/23/2009, -0/+7I'm only 3 months in, I doubt I will make it to 6 at this rate.
- jftitan, on 11/21/2008, -1/+8shoot the dog, because it never learns.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -2/+9No one likes going out to bars or clubs during winters in Illinois anymore since stupid ***** Blagojevich signed the smoking ban bill. I have to say its made for some interesting parties the past couple years however ^_^
- StingingNettle, on 11/21/2008, -1/+7Everyone will be running toward government for help, even though it was their policies and central banking that got us in this. I strongly encourage you to build your own support networks.
- chrissku, on 11/21/2008, -0/+6Our world economy has gone from bad to downright ***** terrible. The scary thing about this crisis is that it's not just one country. It's everyone.
- Trigonometron, on 11/21/2008, -0/+6"Welcome to the party, pal!"
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -1/+7support networks aka moving back in with your parents
- Lewie, on 11/21/2008, -0/+6Then why has there still been inflation between 1997 (the last minimum wage increase) and now? Minimum wage has nothing to do with it. There was a also a study in Florida that found an increase in minimum wage does not impact employment.
And if businesses have trouble, they should cut costs elsewhere, not cut employee wages. Treating humans like a means to an end is what's wrong with society. - inactive, on 11/21/2008, -1/+7Oh, I know what you're going through. I'm a senior at one of the top colleges in TN, 3.5 GPA, preservice teacher, professional, the credentials of a perfect citizen, no drugs, no criminal history, educated, bilingual in Spanish, volunteer work, groomed, professional resume, etc,. and I can't get one fast food joint to hire me.....Apparently I'm only qualified to teach the nation's children, but not to be a fry cook. The only solace I have is that I'll be graduating soon and will have a job teaching K-6, which is a lot easier to get, then a job as a cook or window person at a fast food place....it's pretty depressing all in all.
- bjornski, on 11/21/2008, -1/+7You're right. It'll be much better to let them rot while still shipping their jobs overseas.
A country can't abandon it's citizens and focus only on business and stay strong.
Since the 80's, we've seen "profit taking", not "long term investing". And it's gutting the country. - borez, on 11/21/2008, -0/+6restaurants and places that serve food I completely agree with, pubs, bars and nightclubs should have been allowed a choice though.
- Technopundit, on 11/22/2008, -0/+5It's all Reagan's fault.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -2/+7it's worse: Bush signs bill providing extra jobless benefits
http://digg.com/politics/Bush_signs_bill_providing ... - tawnos, on 11/21/2008, -0/+5Sucks to be in that situation.
- bjornski, on 11/21/2008, -1/+6Here we go with the Digg whiners.....
Don't like it? Don't read it. - Prod_Deity, on 11/21/2008, -0/+5Due to competition, piss poor management, higher prices than needed, high theft of alcohol located near a door, & low hours, my grocery store will close in the middle of December. Pricks wouldn't even let us stay until Christmas..... bastards......
Yes,we are a small chain in the Pacific Northwest, but after a main midwest chain took over us, and our former parent company.... we've been lowered to the red headed step child, even though we were once a premier grocery store.
We used to be a really unique shopping experience, but now we're as common as Safeway or Albertsons...... I hope I didn't give my employer away... heh.
Yeah, being journeyman with a union doesn't help the matter, but at least I can pay my bills.
What to blame is greedy shareholders wanting to make a quick dollar in my case.
My work is a 10 minute walk away from my home, which I have considered _VERY_ LUCKY_! The closest store for me to transfer to, is about 15 miles away from me, which is absurd. If I didn't have to think about getting a babysitter, I'd take a minimum wage job near my house.
I was told that if I didn't take a transfer, they would deny my unemployment claim.... which I hear can be a bitch.
That was my sob story/rant. I don't blame anyone, but the people that are directly involved with this mess....... blame Bush all you want, but it's been proven that Clinton signed the papers for Freddie & Fanny to loan to people that shouldn't be able to buy a house that is beyond their means. By no way shape or form am I a Republican, nor a Democrat, I just call it how it is.
Bush Jr. isn't the best president we've had, granted, he might be the worst, but this isn't directly his fault. - TheVirus, on 11/21/2008, -2/+7There's an old saying in Tennessee, I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee, that says, bite me once, shame on.. shame on you. Bite me.. you can't get bit again.
- bjornski, on 11/21/2008, -0/+5There wouldn't be a reliance on the system if we didn't outsource almost our entire manufacturing base.
Buy American. Your job depends on it. -
