- franklymister, on 04/30/2008, -2/+22It's a shame Omidyar's original integrity and community vision don't exist today at eBay. If they didn't have the Microsoft-style lock on the market that they do, no one would want to put up with their "service."
I don't think another auction site could come along to dethrone eBay, but something else will have to. I can't imagine twenty more years of eBay being the only option when you want to buy or sell stuff person-to-person online. - fyreboltx, on 04/30/2008, -0/+15I'm resonating with many of you in that Ebay isn't as great as it once was... they only seem to care about buyers and power sellers. Small sellers like me, just like the small sellers who made Ebay what it is today, are pretty much ignored and mistreated. But what's Omidyar care? He's made his money I guess...
Here's hoping that Google (or somebody with a lot of cash lying around) starts their own auction site. - MrTito, on 05/01/2008, -0/+12Blah, this is such ***** cookie cutter advice. If everyone pursued their passions and that made everyone successful then there wouldn't be anyone working the ***** jobs of this world. But I guess the converse response from these some blowhards would be "we'll, they didn't try hard enough." I would like to punch people who spout that ***** in the face. These lines come to mind...
Peter Gibbons: Our high school guidance counselor used to ask us what you'd do if you had a million dollars and you didn't have to work. And invariably what you'd say was supposed to be your career. So, if you wanted to fix old cars you're supposed to be an auto mechanic.
Samir: So what did you say?
Peter Gibbons: I never had an answer. I guess that's why I'm working at Initech.
Michael Bolton: No, you're working at Initech because that question is ***** to begin with. If everyone listened to her, there'd be no janitors, because no one would clean ***** up if they had a million dollars. - RenovatioInc, on 04/30/2008, -0/+10Pursue my passion? Awesome. I can't wait to be the Emperor of the world.
- sockpuppets, on 04/30/2008, -2/+11Don't forget paypal's cut.
- PabloMac, on 04/30/2008, -0/+8Me, too.
"Omidyar’s personal net worth is estimated to be roughly $10 billion."
That's why. - ShempRider, on 04/30/2008, -1/+7I'd like to read a similar interview with Craig Newmark.
- BradBrown, on 05/01/2008, -0/+5My passions are masturbation and Judge Judy (not at the same time). I don't think there's money in either, but I'll keep trying.
- Beatmiser, on 04/30/2008, -0/+4Honestly, I do much better with Craigslist these days. If I put something up for sale locally someone will almost always buy it in two or three days. I get the same price I would sell for with ebay, but don't have to spend money on shipping, deal with people via email, and get the personal satisfaction of dealing one on one and backing up what I sell.

Prediction: Removing all payment methods except PayPal will be a failure.
Screw Ebay, it's dead to me. Anyone else know any good auction sites that have Australian versions? - Gustavus, on 04/30/2008, -2/+4PLEASE READ THIS. IF YOU REPOST THIS OR ANY OTHER CHAIN LETTER YOU WILL DIE. THIS CHAIN LETTER IS MORE POWERFUL THAN ALL THE OTHER CHAIN LETTERS THAT HAVE BEEN OR EVER WILL BE MADE COMBINED.
- sockpuppets, on 04/30/2008, -1/+3Give it time.
- inactive, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2Not only are their selling fees so outrageous, they suspend family members and coworkers just for being "related or associated with a suspended user." Boeing has over 10,000 employees. They'll suspend them all if one suspended user tries to log onto eBay at work?
eBay's oppressive policy reminds me of North Korea, who imprison whole families just for the crimes of one, even if the crime is a two-year-old having scrawled scribbles on Kim Jong-il's portrait. - twinklyJesus, on 04/30/2008, -3/+5Isn't "self" implied with "pretentious?"
- Tenlow, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2If that's a paying gig, I say go for it.
- franklymister, on 05/01/2008, -1/+3Meg Whitman, is this your Digg account?

- czeman, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1You're right. eBay just hasn't been the same since it got too big for its britches. ***** eBay and the greedy, sneaky ***** running it!
- inactive, on 05/01/2008, -1/+2ALL BEWARE: eBay suspended a whole family just for being related to a suspended user.

- azurechaos, on 04/30/2008, -1/+2Not in my experience, they take a pretty good chunk but it's not that much.
- phatphil, on 04/30/2008, -1/+2That article didn't say anything.
- cassjewelry, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1I like ebay better- the buyer is the one who pays shipping, I don't have to use gas to go to a public place for the money handoff...
- dan4surf, on 04/30/2008, -4/+5Craig list can be an option for selling sell stuff person-to-person online.
Another way is Facebook market place.
Both are free for selling your stuff. - twinklyJesus, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1That's not grammar, that's basic language skills, sport.

- Adeah, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1Another great testament that living in the present moment with pure enthusiasm will create great results. Wealth is a mind set not a bench mark to reach towards but an internal quality to live by every day.
- tramblings, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1Here's our similar article. With the exception that we've made $2.13 so far. Sometimes passions and hobbies are just that.. :P But whatever. Better than working for da man.
http://flashburrito.com/aboutus/ - cappa1983, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1"...be passionate enough about it so that you will put in the hours and hard work that it takes to actually succeed there, and then you’ll be successful. - inactive, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1Just because you tried to sell that teapot on eBay doesn't mean you're an expert on it.

http://www.yomuzik.net Yo Music - offtone, on 05/01/2008, -0/+0www.postaroo.com - Not sure what makes them think they're competition for anyone? But meh. An option. (Wait. Maybe that's it?)
www.kijiji.com - Oddly enough, it's owned by eBay.
www.craigslist.org - Kind of a given; you've all heard of it. More reason to use it.
I hate eBay because the interface is rubbish. It's been over a decade and the morons still haven't figured out how to put a javascript countdown on a page? Why do I have to reload to update the "time left"?! WHY?!
Craig's List is my second favourite. Despite the "SO 90's" interface, it's popular. Very popular. Kijiji's prettier, and that's really it. Neither site lets me know when the item is sold, nor do they have buyer/seller feedback for reasons we'll never know. I guess it's a privacy thing? And in the case of Craig's List, you may not want to know that the couch you're buying is the one the owner's sitting on in that photo of him in the buff playing "hide the phallic fruit".
Meh. Up yours, obvious-advice-giver. - Marijuana, on 05/01/2008, -1/+1Sentence mechanics, sport. (did I win?)
- Nickyboi666, on 05/01/2008, -0/+0hey supergeek, if you really want to earn while you sleep, i heard about this sleep research centre, not sure where it is but they pay you about 3 grand to sleep for 3 months! not sure if theres side effects like death or anything maybe you should google it.
or you could just start a blog, get google adsense get a few affiliate add's like i don't know... dare i say it ebay! and get some PPC cash like every one else.
it's similar to those schemes people try and get you to buy, just that it's free and quite easy to setup, the hard part is getting the traffic, some people pay to get there site more popular but doesnt that sort of defeat the object?
anyway here's a link to my blog which tells you all about it, hope you make some money whilst you sleep, i feel like i'm helping you to fulfill your dreams! lol
http://loadsofcashforfree.blogspot.com/ - Nickyboi666, on 05/01/2008, -0/+0i say combine your passions you may get a nice surprise (or be mentally scared for life!)

- thesupergeek, on 05/01/2008, -0/+0I love my passion, its the only thing that gets me to sleep :) Oh yeah by the way, my passion is sleeping! So whose gonna pay me? LOL..
- houndeyex, on 05/01/2008, -3/+2Facebook marketplace is good if you're in that sort of an area. Sold a couch in about 8 hours. I recommended it to other people as well and they moved their items in less than a day as well. Plus, no profit cuts.
- FaithclubDotNet, on 04/30/2008, -5/+4I knew ebay would get big as soon as I heard him with his first auctions in like 93/94. I also knew instant messaging would be big(before there was a client for windows). And I knew personals sites would be big. Also I knew MMORPGS would be huge.
If I sent you back to 1994 knowing all these things, could you actually complete one yourself with no funding? It is like knowing about the automobile and the airplane, but you're living around 1000AD. People will think your insane, and you can't make one from scratch yourself.
In case you're wondering what will be big now. Watch nanosolar.com and potentially coskata.com - Richard1400, on 08/12/2008, -1/+0I would like to introduce you another Ebay similar site: http://www.beltal.com, just have a look at it and you will find many wonderful items.
