- mieprowan, on 08/26/2008, -3/+37Maybe we should start trying to figure out how to live without petroleum. Y'know, get ahead of the curve?
- fani, on 08/27/2008, -2/+30Actually, in this case, after having just watched BBC - hurricane Gustav might in about 120 hours become threatening to New Orleans/Texas area.
They showed a picture of the oil rigs off the coast of Texas and Louisiana and boy ! there are so many. Around 100 or so.
If all the refineries are evacuated as safety, their production will drop and that *could* cause drop in oil mining/refining and the money-grabbing speculators will always bet on their safe side which is that the hurricane will hit and there will be a drop etc. etc.
This speculation is driving up the trading value of oil on that commodity mkt. Hence oil rises.
I thought I'd just add some info here. Most of digg doesn't care of understand things and likes to yell "Burn her. She's a witch....look there....oooh! Shiny" along with the masses anyways. Mob mentality rules here. - l034me, on 08/27/2008, -0/+27the World Meteorological Organization.

- jj101, on 08/27/2008, -12/+27Dwindling global supply sending oil prices soaring!
- Spuy767, on 08/27/2008, -5/+19They sure have. Battery tech back then didn't permit an electric car that was the least bit practical, and it barely did in the 90's. Only now, do batteries exist that allow us to make a useful all electric car. Take your conspiracy theory, and shove it up your ass.

- ulmedas, on 08/27/2008, -0/+12Well, living in Florida during the rainy / hurricane season is probably why it won't stop raining, but I am just guessing.
- mikasaur, on 08/27/2008, -5/+17Well when a hurricane limits supply by forcing rig workers to evacuate, the supply-demand equilibrium does tend to settle somewhere higher than it was before the storm.
But no you're probably right. It's probably BS, and not them fancy-shmancy macroeconomic principles. - twiztidsinz, on 08/27/2008, -2/+14McCain is so old... when he hit puberty, his aftershave was called "New Spice".

- stutimandal, on 08/27/2008, -1/+12Enron loophole sends the oil price high. And when oil dropped to $118/barrel, people forgot about that loophole. So now it is back in action.

- Takfam, on 08/27/2008, -2/+12And then maybe we should use THAT oil so that there is no shortage.
And then when THAT oil runs out, we'll find more and use THAT as our source in case another shortage happens.
And then we'll run out of oil and be totally *****, but hey, we'll have solved the shortage problem. - keitho, on 08/27/2008, -0/+10the name was picked years in advance. the fact that it became a hurricane is just luck of the draw.

- derek20la, on 08/27/2008, -0/+9no new refineries have been built, but the existing ones have had their capacity greatly increased. kinda like how its hard to build a new freeway through an urban area, but its much easier to add a carpool lane onto the existing road.

- raober, on 08/27/2008, -3/+10Yep...dwindling global supply, plus soaring demand, plus rotting infrastructure, plus geopolitical concerns...and most of all, the abject denial of the vast majority of humanity that we have a VERY serious energy problem on our hands.
- jester55, on 08/27/2008, -6/+13The weak dollar and rising demand are the two biggest reasons BY FAR for high gas prices. Also, a lot of people seem to think that the oil companies are setting the prices of gasoline. This is not entirely true. OPEC sets the prices, and the oil companies have to base the gas prices on that. And while some of them such as Exxon are making large profits, other oil companies that BUY all their oil (and don't drill it), and simply refine it, are not making so much profit.

- Valujet, on 08/27/2008, -4/+11A hurricane which could cut production and refining capabilities is not a bs reason for oil prices to soar.
