- canadian0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+54A little titbit from wakeupwalmart.com:
Wal-Mart can cover the cost of a dollar an hour wage increase by raising prices a half penny per dollar. For instance, a $2.00 pair of socks would then cost $2.01. This minimal increase would annually add up to $1,800 for each employee. [Analysis of Wal-Mart Annual Report 2005]
You have to admire that capitalist spirit. - Zreitan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4220 years of service and you get a shirt? Why not ***** my wife right in front of me too?
- lucid270, on 10/12/2007, -3/+37Allright, I'll just need your resume and a picture of your wife.
Don't worry, we can make this work. - max420, on 10/12/2007, -5/+38Wal-Mart sucks... period. I never go to wal-mart for anything.
I don't know about the US, but in Canada when you first get hired at Wal-Mart you need to sing this crazy walmart song with the rest of your hire group to get into the wal-mart spirit.
I walked out the door when they told me to sing, I was like no... *****... way. Found a job elsewhere. lol - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+34what the hell did he expect. he worked at walmart.
-z00k - ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25I think I speak for all of digg when I say......
WHERE DO I SIGN UP!?!?! - ratnacage, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27I myself have have worked for Target for 2 years. No problems, not a career job but not that bad. After that i went to Wal-mart(read-more money), i worked there a year and eight months and they fired me just yesterday. Except for the last write-up( or "Coaching" as they call it) I got in trouble constantly for going 5 hours without taking a lunch.
When my shift was just about up, my manager would come by and say "Hey, go do that endcap over there," which i would reply " Umm my shift is over in 5mins, and i am about to hit the 5 hour mark",, and always the answer was " So? Take your second lunch, come back and finish this endcap, it will only take 15 mins."
So every time i said "Screw you guys Im going home". By walmart policy i deserved to be fired. In 10 years of working for crap jobs, i have never been wrote up. Then when this policy came under effect,, Bam! write up city.
My last write up came when i told my Manager off. Working for walmart you expect not to be treated with any respect, by either customers or managers. But when people step on your basic human dignity, you have to tell them to ***** off. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Probably out of her own pocket. She took pity on the idiots who camped out for a non-essential product. At least the Russians lined up for bread, who the ***** lines up for a PS3? Walmart didn't do ***** for you, as it certainly isn't store policy. The manager did and deserves all the credit.
- oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22i wonder what the kids, at the sweatshop, that made the polo shirt get?
- iching, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Well, I hope this one goes further than my original post because I thought the shirt
and other great perks from Wal-Mart at this shopping time of the year was amusing enough for the American consumer. They treat workers like ***** and it shows.
I remember when Wal-Mart bought USA union stuff before Sam died. - Yez70, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20@pee7
So you're saying it's your fault? - jasonsfakename, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18I worked at Sam's Club for about 4 years while in college and never had a problem. Then again..Sam's Club is totally different then Wal-Mart. I was getting affordable health care, paid holidays, and vacation time. Not to mention the $1,000.00 to $2,200.00 bonus we would all get around march. All in all it was a GOOD experience.
- aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Its true, I worked at a place that instead of giving xmas gifts, gave the employees packs of gum.
I have never heard more dissent in my life. If they had just skipped the "gift" it wouldn't have been as bad, But the gum was just an insult. - vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13The big advantage of the mom and pop stores is that they take whatever profits they make and likely spend them right back in the community you live in. That means you can have more upscale services and tradesmen living in such a community. They spend their money back in the community.. and basically overall wealth is higher.
Walmart takes all those profits far away from your community, and you're left with just a bunch of really low paid retail and service jobs, making the entire community a huge lowest common denominator of nearly everything. Small/mid town america loses nearly all distinct character and local culture becomes nearly nonexistent.
Walmart's notion of increased wealth is that we can fill our houses with more cheap plastic crap then ever. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+137 years ago people were talking about how great their lives were working for some "start up company" in Silicon Valley wth great stock options.
You know where those people are now? Working at Walmart! - RichPowers, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18**** you Wal-Mart. I stopped shopping there after I learned of all their bastard business practices AND, in recent years, their prices have become much less competitive.
- thelimopit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14If you're going to be spending $600 (whatever) in a single transaction at Walmart, they're going to look after you.
- shirtninjay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Does he get a pair of khakis after another 20 years?
- andrebsd, on 10/12/2007, -9/+20"I Worked at Wal-Mart for 20 Years and Got a Free Polo Shirt"
Yet something tells me if you got absolutely nothing you wouldn't be here complaining. The issue is they offered to give something and you simply wanted more. Welcome to the corporate world.
... And now I pretty much guarantee this will be modded down, lol. - aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I don't want human interaction, the employees are usually creepy, especially late at night.
Most of the automated machines I have seen are just terribly designed, clumsy, and slow.
Give me Sheetz style automation over a smelly, annoying, can't count change, tries-to-make-awkward-smalltalk employee any day of the week. - elliam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Ooh.. a pack of gum. Did they kick you in the balls when they gave it to you?
I can understand wanting to do something for the employees and not having the budget to do it. There are better options than token gifts that may be perceived as a reflection of one's value to the company. - unknownunknowns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Haha...I can imagine the meeting...
"Well, we're the richest company in the history of the world...what kind of Christmas bonus can we afford to give our workers?"
"Hmm...how about some Juicy Fruit?" - aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Your attempt at sarcasm depresses me.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I do shop at Walmart. My local retailers never did me any favors anyway.
However, many people are genuinely happy to work there. The singing thing is just their first step into the comprehensive indoctrination and brainwashing system that Walmart has. After a few shifts locked inside the store, their scientologesque training regime is over, and they defend Walmart's right to be a ***** employer, and love. Yes LOVE Walmart for hiring them and saving them from the cold hospices of industrial labor. - unknownunknowns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Did you enjoy the anti-union propaganda video? Personally, I didn't make it past the "personality assessment" or whatever they call it...I guess I'm just too honest.
- maehem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I bought my own for about $15 at Wal-Mart which is about 20 minutes of work for my profession.
A lousy shirt? Sheesh. They should give you a vacation for two after that many years. - ross., on 10/12/2007, -0/+9lol I guess Wal-mart just thought no one would ever make it to 20 years anyway, so they'd never have to spring for a polo shirt.
- PeckerDunne, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Wait for hours in a queue FOR A TOY? You're deranged.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9how can you be one of the richest families in the world without being disgustingly greedy?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"I went to WalMart and all I got was this lousy polo shirt."
- joeisanemokid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"so who cares if mom and pop go outta business, that's what they get for charging more than Wal-Mart."
hmm, maybe mom and pop care, considering it is in absolutely no way feasible for them to charge wal-mart prices without losing profit on everything they sell. The advantage of these family owned businesses is the friendly interaction you get there, knowing that they will remember you at future visits, and the fact that your money is actually going straight to them, not some guy sitting high atop a corporate ladders screwing his employees out of proper insurance benefits and wages.
This is why I much prefer going to the local guitar store and purchasing all of my music equipment, even if I do have to pay sales taxes that I wouldn't if I bought the same thing off the internet, its a great environment, the sales staff are actually knowledgable, and they buy what customers are most interested in, not what some corporation deems most sell able due to their investments in company x. - jasonsfakename, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I don't think they have had that position for 20 years yet. But if so..I wouldn't see any reason why not.
- unknownunknowns, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10@broomett
That's odd, because no one that I know that works/ed at Wal-Mart got any benefits. They got the same paycheck that they could get at McDonald's, except with less chance for advancement.
Just because you have job skills doesn't mean that jobs exist for those skills. There are a limited number of jobs out there, and more people than jobs...that's how capitalism works. You sell your labor on the market. You are the commodity. - ningen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Reminds me of the time I received a cheap watch for working in fast food for five years. That was half an hour before I was fired. I then went and put a .30-caliber bullet through the watch face; and, that was a satisfying day.
- aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It was a pack of Extra sugarfree gum, since we went "The Extra Mile"
- imsoclever, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I love how you base your entire opinion of a corporation based on the fact that one person made you feel like a princess while you waited in line for a toy.
- McTim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6So have you written to the corporate HQ singing the praises of this manager who was clearly very thoughtful and considerate?
Maybe not give the specifics, because the power thing may get her in trouble, but suggest that gestures like this have earned your consumer loyalty when it comes to purchasing games. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11@ratnacage
wow i feel sorry for you. you consider getting a walmart job moving up. you need to go back to school and get a degree so you can get a decent job somewhere. good luck in life.
-z00k - ff7jordan23, on 10/12/2007, -15/+21I am so sick of hearing people bash Walmart. It seems only the bad things that Walmart does are the things that people hear about. They do plenty of good things for many people, for example: while I was waiting in line for the PS3 last month, the store manager went to McDonalds after her shift and brought back coffee and food for free to all of us waiting in line. They let us hook up a tv and laptop to watch movies and play video games while waiting and they also got us free deserts and drinks the following morning. The managers and staff at the Walmart in Saginaw, Michigan went well beyond my expectations to make sure we were satisfied. But I guess this kind of stuff never makes the news and it's a shame.
- ratnacage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@junkmail
No need to feel sorry for me, I am in my third year of college at the moment. I pay for my schooling with my own money, so I simply go where the money is. Sadly in a small town malwart is where money, and flexible scheduling can be found.
- dangmoss, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8how about the local mom and pop are paying better wages
how about the local mom and pop might by crap from you if they get to know you (like computer services)
how about someone who actually cares about you
no one at walmart cares about you, or the company they work for
WALMART BLOWS - altopablo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Life lesson #1 - The world owes you absolutely nothing.
Be glad you got a shirt, because plenty of people get a kick in the ass - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8i used to work at walmart,i remember that dreaded cheerleader song..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Zellers, the bay and the other stores owned by hbc are the WORST - bad pay, no benefits, but absolutely ZERO ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS. The management, training, even store layout are a complete atrocity.
At least Wal-Mart and Best Buy have the "system" down-pat - Zellers is a *****-up from A to Z. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5They do have automated check outs, but the reality is that slaves are cheaper. Everyone experiments with automation of retail outlets, but partly human nature and partly cost leads them to failure. Japan is the only country where they have had some limited success with vending machines. People want human interaction.
Also, machines need maintenance but you can just throw humans away if they get old or worn out. So Walmart will always have humans or they will lose their dominant position in the market. - toddhenkel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Question - if the place is SOOO terrible to work at, why would someone stay for 20 years? There were no better jobs in two decades that working at Wal Mart turned into a career???
- jasonsfakename, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I believe they give you a month paid vacation after being there that long.
- Shivetya, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Digg is infested with parrots.
All the tripe that is spewed about Wal-Mart is nothing more than the BS fed you by groups sponsored by unions. If Wal-Mart was unionized all the anti-Wal Mart crap would dry up over night.
Fact, recently at a signing from a very vocal anti wal-mart personage was held as a Barnes & Noble. Of course Barnes and Noble is lauded by these people as an example of what employees should be treated like. Too bad a local station discovered that B&N employees were paid less at starting and received smaller wages and LESS BENEFITS than those working at wal-mart down the road.
Wal-Mart pays more than many of its competitors. They provide more benefits than many of them as well. Its easy to pick and choose to show that they don't but compared to as a whole and the evidence is on Wal-Mart side.
For the most part most 'techy' sites are just filled with people who either hate life or some entity so much any amount of reasoning is lost. Looking at the dugg down comments and you can tell what type of people actually feel so vindictive that they just go down the whole page hitting the red thumb on anything that doesn't meet their world view. After all they are wrong and everyone else has to be stupid, if they weren't they would easily agree with the righteous.
Sheesh, whens the last time you did anything for the poor "Wal-Mart" or grocery store employee you so bemoan on digg or /. ?
probably never. - stoppedcode12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Even if you are the door greeter?
- DrinkingNyquil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Would you rather they have no job at all and get nothing?"
Actually, as a small business owner I'd rather have "unskilled" workers making more than $6.75 an hour, especially at places that employ thousands of workers, like Wal-mart.
That's $11,232 a year assuming 32 hours part-time (full-time is a anathema to these companies) . Take out $600 a month rent, $200 a month for food, and that's $1,632 a year left for utilities and buying my products and services.
More money in their pockets means they have more money to spread around, possibly into my pockets. Or I can hope 2 Wal-mart executives come into my store and spend as much as thousands of Wal-mart employees. -
