- dse78759, on 04/14/2009, -0/+59I don't know what they're talking about. I worked at IBM 1996-2000 and they never bought me a cup of coffee. This must be in some executive break room somewhere.

- inactive, on 04/14/2009, -2/+35Everyone's a Coffee & Tea drinker when it's free.
Now it's time to find out who the real drinkers are. - ileftfark, on 04/14/2009, -6/+38IBM has been cutting jobs left and right, and plan to leave more people jobless, and these people are bitching about free coffee? Really guys?
- pagit, on 04/14/2009, -1/+29Employees at IBM Australia are also upset about having 3 beers less down from daily 6 and smaller bar-b- ques.
- anexanhume, on 04/14/2009, -5/+29Holy crap, here comes the teary river. Get my canoe!
- ahhell, on 04/14/2009, -11/+33OH THE HORROR!!!
Would you rather lose coffee or your job? - toastjam, on 04/14/2009, -1/+23Don't they read Dilbert?

- chriskzoo, on 04/14/2009, -0/+20Hey, we have to coffee club at work. No big deal - $5 a month for all you can drink.
- LastVisibleDog, on 04/14/2009, -1/+20Unpaid overtime is called salaried employee
- Unexploded, on 04/14/2009, -6/+25It all boils down to the same thing: greed.
Short-sighted, stupid, greed. The fortune 500 company I work for is too cheap to even provide us with post-it notes and pens. It's not because we're hurting, it's because greedy mofo's at the top of the food chain want their 40 million dollar bonus, which is tied directly to short term cost cutting.
Move everything offshore, get rid of anyone making decent money, axe training (and stationary) and the numbers will look pretty sweet for a couple of years. By the time everything implodes, you've already moved off to another company to perform the same "turn-around". Sound familiar? Gosh, I wonder if this is somehow tied to the current state of the economy. - inactive, on 04/14/2009, -2/+18geeks need coffee.
management need coffee.
given that this is IBM where 90% of the management are geeks, they will probably retract this policy. - samard2002, on 04/14/2009, -5/+17Have a ***** hot cup of perspective then. At least you have a job.
- jturbo, on 04/14/2009, -1/+12So when exactly did company paid bowling excursions become necessary? WTF. How about cutting costs so your customers can save money buying your products and maybe you'll attract some new buyers. HP isn't poor, they're just not ***** that get handed millions of dollars in venture capital, and fritter it away offering pointless luxuries.
- arvvvs, on 04/14/2009, -0/+11"Employees who put in long hours of unpaid overtime to help push the tech giant's profits up 12 per cent to $US4.4billion during its final quarter of last year have received the news as a slap in the face."
Mistreatment? - SarahC, on 04/14/2009, -2/+12Unpaid overtime?
Isn't that called slave labour?
I mean - where does it end? Wages are dropping, filling in for colleagues on extended leave, work/life balance is skewed, unpaid overtime, working lunch, 24/7 availability...
The price of globalisation is that to compete we have to work via the lowest common denominators...
Just wait till the work day is officially 6am to 7:30pm, and it's cheaper to live in your cubicle/bedsit. Something needs to change, but I have no idea what! - amandamano, on 04/14/2009, -0/+9Umm, they are "cutting" people. 10,000 of them. I hate to sound like a bitch, but didya read the article?
- Nexusmonkey, on 04/14/2009, -1/+10"Employees who put in long hours of unpaid overtime to help push the tech giant's profits up 12 per cent to $US4.4billion during its final quarter of last year have received the news as a slap in the face."
...Yet that can't afford tea or coffee for their employees? - inactive, on 04/14/2009, -4/+12Would they rather people get laid off?
- BlackJackJester, on 04/14/2009, -0/+8so they upgraded coffee and saved money. Good move!
- ileftfark, on 04/14/2009, -2/+9I agree. That was kinda my point - of all the ***** these companies and corporate types are doing, and somehow coffee is an issue. Sad, really.
- greenlight2001, on 04/14/2009, -2/+9Hey, thanks for your totally out of context story! Do you have a blog I can subscribe to?
- deweyhewson, on 04/14/2009, -1/+8All those above claiming this isn't a big deal are forgetting a key part of the situation: IBM's profits INCREASED over the last year. They aren't hurting; the are making more money than ever!
Everyone knows that it goes unsaid that employees are just pieces of office equipment to corporations, but actions like this only serve to further drive the dagger in. - BlackJackJester, on 04/14/2009, -0/+6I'm not sure if you know....but IBM's primary business is not consumer electronics.
- stklaw, on 04/14/2009, -0/+6And it would also increase staff morale.
- inactive, on 04/14/2009, -1/+7You should submit your business ideas to them. You clearly know what you're talking about.
- jgrundy, on 04/14/2009, -0/+6When HP bought our small company last year, we managed to keep one of our 'traditions'. A fully stocked beer and wine fridge. :)
HP have made similar cost cuts too, such as no more free fruit in our office...
At least the beer is still there! :D - Myztry, on 04/14/2009, -2/+7A lot of money can be saved firing incompetent management staff, without sacrificing loyality building luxuries...
- asgardshill, on 04/14/2009, -0/+5Same here. I worked as a contractor for them around that same time frame, and not even the permanent employees at the facilities I worked at got free beverages. They had coin-op machines and that was it - they did supply free hot water but you brought your own coffee/teabags/sweetener/whatever..
- psYcon, on 04/14/2009, -2/+7I don't feel sorry at all for these 'poor' employees. I work at a fortune 100 firm where we never had free coffee to begin with (even during the boom). The solution? BYOC (bring your own coffee thermos/coffee maker etc.)
- Ultrace, on 04/14/2009, -0/+5If you're putting in long hours of unpaid overtime, then you're probably salaried anyway, so it's expected of you. If you're an hourly employee working long bouts of unpaid overtime, then either the free coffee and tea isn't going to lessen the sting of that, or you're a fool for letting it.
- hkrob, on 04/14/2009, -0/+5That just means your employers are miserable
- DangerCollie, on 04/14/2009, -1/+6Hey they have to pay for those executive bonuses somehow. You should be glad to sacrifice your cup of java so some ex VP can make their quarterly numbers.
- marx2k, on 04/14/2009, -0/+5$0.85/sip
- rolf, on 04/14/2009, -0/+5$5 Holy crap. My uncle drinks about 15-20 double expresso's a day. You guys would have been out of beans by the 1st week>.>
- drpcox, on 04/14/2009, -0/+5I've been an IBM Canada employee for 8 years... been to almost every office between Victoria and Ottawa... never have I seen free coffee or tea. =\
Although the *smarter* employees should know how go get away with expensing it =P - lordmike, on 04/14/2009, -0/+4You'd think that they would get a deal on Indian tea considering all the jobs they are moving over there....
- inactive, on 04/14/2009, -4/+8That doesn't even make sense.
- jturbo, on 04/14/2009, -0/+4I would posit that if some nameless and out of sight people were being laid off so that they could keep their precious coffee/tea no unaffected IBM employee would care half as much.
- LMN8R, on 04/14/2009, -0/+4I did a year's worth of internships there and I never got a cup of coffee for anything less than a dollar. 20oz Coke was the usual $1.25 too.
Oh wait, they raised the price of a 20oz to $1.30 before that.
Where was this mystical free coffee from? - nepidae, on 04/14/2009, -0/+4And what if the company stopped providing phone service? Sure that would save a few bucks today, but its tomorrow that will suffer. Its simple short sighted greed to take coffee/tea away.
- Nexusmonkey, on 04/14/2009, -1/+5What is there to understand? They made $4.4B PROFIT.. what does tea and coffee cost as a percentage of that? Its utter greed and its disgusting.
- mr5150, on 04/14/2009, -1/+5i wonder if the CEO & CFO have had their coffee privileges axed? if so then i'm O.K with it, if not then get the coffee back into the kitchens.
- CoreyTamas, on 04/14/2009, -0/+4I have the strangest feeling that upper management still enjoys a nice, hot cup on demand.
- inactive, on 04/14/2009, -0/+4Do you even know what IBM does? It's not just selling computers.
- shaka999, on 04/14/2009, -0/+4All sorts of companies are cutting...even when they don't have to. Right now it is an employers "market". When things turn around some of these companies are going to have problems keeping employees.
- inactive, on 04/14/2009, -0/+4So have different areas pool their money for a coffee pot and coffee? Coffee isn't really expensive if you go to a bulk store. $10 is usually enough for one of those huge plastic containers at BJ's or a Sam's Club. That's enough for a few dozen pots of coffee.
- ransomduke, on 04/15/2009, -0/+4Current IBM employee here. Never seen any coffee or tea. No big deal.
