Thanks Newsweek for that in-depth analysis! - planegray, on 11/14/2007, -4/+48I was thinking more along the lines of:
1.stay away from cocaine
2.don't marry get married she'll suck you for all you're worth
3.WRAP IT - slayerab, on 11/14/2007, -4/+32how to save money

- ngmcs8203, on 11/14/2007, -3/+242 years in to my marriage and the tax write-offs have been great. I think by "dont get married" you mean "dont get divorced"

- sancho320, on 11/14/2007, -1/+15Whoa whoa whoa take it easy! Hopefully no one is that desperate.
- jd33, on 11/14/2007, -3/+14Dammit, just turned 26.
- bigthree, on 12/03/2007, -4/+15good advice -- too bad so many kids out of college have no concept of saving ...and many go in to debt living at home with the folks!
- ozymandias2012, on 11/14/2007, -5/+15"We're consumers. We are by-products of a lifestyle obsession. Murder, crime, poverty, these things don't concern me. What concerns me are celebrity magazines, television with 500 channels, some guy's name on my underwear. Rogaine, Viagra, Olestra."

quit buying weed and your expendable income will rise nearly 50% - Hetman, on 11/14/2007, -0/+8you're not how much money you've got in the bank. You're not your job. You're not your family, and you're not who you tell yourself.... You're not your name.... You're not your problems.... You're not your age.... You are not your hopes.

- inactive, on 11/14/2007, -0/+6The tax write-offs don't offset the potential risks involved with marriage.
If you get divorced (even if your marriage is great, it CAN happen), then you're ***** - period. Have kids? *****.
90% of people are better off waiting until their careers are established and school is done. No lie.
You can get much farther quicker, and once you're there, THEN do the family thing. You first have to learn to provide and live for yourself before you can do it with someone else. - phenolholic, on 11/14/2007, -1/+71. stop purchasing weed
2. grow weed

4. PROFIT - briLo, on 11/13/2007, -0/+6-If you can't pay cash, you don't need it; but you'll need a credit card to establish credit so use one for grocery shopping only; it sets a pattern and is something you can pay off.
-The new LCD/Plasma/XBox/PS3 will evolve and cost half the price in time.
-A case of beer at home costs less than 8 beers at the bar (so invite a couple of friends over and stare at the girl and watch your buddy puke on himself).
-Go with the shwag (sure Dank tastes better but a bizzy will do you just right).
-Sure a girl might like your new car but get her drunk enough and she'll bang you in your 92 accord as well.
Never pass on dinner with family. - Hetman, on 11/13/2007, -0/+6I just go out when they are deals. My only problem is when I take a girl out and she just has to have a 12 dollar martinit. Im like wtf I didnt come here for the dollar beers so I could pay 12 dollars for your one drink. "I do not say that out loud though but I sure am thinking it." O well it is the way of the world.

- kakwakas, on 11/14/2007, -0/+5Why isn't there anything that says "stop buying so much drugs an alcohol?"
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 11/13/2007, -3/+8While I think your response is a little crude, I do belive that "Don't get married!" belongs on the list.
- asancho, on 11/13/2007, -0/+5Bring a flask to bars. Seriously, when i was dirt poor in college i would do this. Ask for a water, dump out the water, pour some gin from a flask, and then tell the waitress "Excuse me, could i get some more tonic with this, you made it too strong". Works like a charm.
- timewarp424, on 11/13/2007, -1/+6You better give it up now.
- GuyeNoir, on 11/14/2007, -0/+4Because that's just crazy talk!
- GreenGuy78, on 11/14/2007, -0/+4From a 30 year old, simply, don't spend more than you make.
- Scotty87, on 11/14/2007, -1/+5this article is stupid
- jspegele, on 11/14/2007, -1/+5I think the point is that you should pay off higher interest debt (like credit cards) first.

- speerross, on 11/13/2007, -1/+4Actually, Marx noted (and wanted) that the state would whither away - so no, the party is NOT forever.
- Hetman, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3I have bought my guy friends shots. And I live downtown chicago so a shot of jeigger is like 10 bucks. So yea I would.
- Butros, on 11/14/2007, -1/+4I'm 26 and married and living in an over priced apartment. I really want to move back into my parent's basement for a couple years to build a financial foundation. My brother lived at home until he was almost 30. Now he has a big ass house, a luxury car and a plane. I have almost 26k in credit card debt. Guess who made the right decision?
- matthewf01, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3some of those things will help your credit history more than others...esp. if you pay on time, and pay more than minimum.
With a credit card, you'll build up history faster, and it's good to have in case of financial emergency too. I've had a Visa credit card for almost 2 years now, I'm 21, been building up my history, carry a small balance, increased my credit limit to lower my utilization, and I just got approved for an American Express with 0% interest for a year and I get cash back for every $2500 i spend. Its not a lot but its something... so ill start using that for everyday purchases instead of my debit card, and pay it all off at the end of the month (so basically the same as using my debit, just having it all come out at once in a month), acrue some cash back, pay no interest, get more credit history, and keep my other Visa CC account open (account history is important too... you dont need to close a longstanding account, its supposed to be good to have!)
The fatwallet Finance forums were helpful to me in researching credit cards, etc. - GuyeNoir, on 11/13/2007, -0/+3Move to Japan, I hear suicide is considered the honorable way out over there.

- Kisama, on 11/13/2007, -6/+8Bump 'em off for the insurance money?
- YEMandy, on 11/14/2007, -1/+3Having recently graduated, some of the lowest interest rates you can get are around 7% on private loans. 7% may sound good compared to some credit cards, but most people don't have $100,000 in credit card debt like they do student loans.Just paying a little bit more a month on you student loan payments can reduce your payments by years.
- Dchandaman, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2so i really want to use mint.com, sounds perfect for what I want it to do... only thing that concerns me is mint.com's security.
You have to give them you bank account, and credit card numbers (which is a huge red flag)
Any suggestions from anyone who use mint.com? or should i just suck up the money and get Quicken for mac - inkyblue2, on 11/14/2007, -1/+3depends on the interest rate. if you've got even reasonably good rates on your student loans, it can easily make more sense to pay them off slowly and use the extra cash elsewhere (i.e. paying down higher interest debt or investing).
- burdalane, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2I agree with mustntSurfatWork. I happily kept the money my parents gave to me when I was in college, and as a result, I've been able to skip the "poor" part of "young and poor." Now I make decent money and have lots of savings. Of course, this depends on having affluent parents. It also helps that I've always been almost a teetotaller and that I only drink coffee at most a few times a month and only buy clothes once every several months.
- imacommi, on 11/13/2007, -3/+5If you really need an article to tell you what you need to do in order to save money then you are an idiot. It's really pretty simple, spend less than you make... see how hard was that?
- newstvnowfan, on 12/30/2007, -0/+2For money that you need to be able to access in 3-5 days I recommend a compound interest savings account. This website helps you calculate how much interest you could save... http://pixelspotlight.com/money.php
- dalittle, on 11/13/2007, -1/+3Be careful with your check card. With a credit card you can be protected to some degree from fraud, but with a check card you are SOL. Cash works with your plan with no fraud risk.
I do not think your check card contributes to your FICO credit score (which you want to build). However, if you are disciplined in paying off the balance each month, look for a credit card that gives cash back for using it. (I used this to compare cards to get the lowest rate and cash back - http://bankrate.com/brm/rate/cc_home.asp) - MadEnvoy, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2I didn't know they were for sale.
- skeeterbug84, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2Don't use your credit card unless you know you can pay it ALL off each month. I don't think I've ever had a balance on my credit card, and I have owned one for 5 years now. Try to set money aside for emergencies, they happen (500 dollar deductibles, health issues, etc). My recent ER trip has cost me well over 1,000 dollars now, and I didn't even stay at the hospital over night (Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance paid for a majority, but it wasn't all covered). The article mentions bringing a sack lunch, learn to cook your dinners as well. Lastly, do a spreadsheet of all your monthly expenses, and figure out where you can potentially cut back if needed.
- Butros, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2 "he loved big brother"
- Hetman, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2It is not the only way. but I like going out anyways. I prefer not to date people I work with. And I like being in a social enviroment when I meet girls. I do not like 1 on 1 dates the first time I meet someone. I could reproduce with out cash but it is easier this way and more entertaining.
- leerayIG88, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2Just whore yourself to the opposite sex. I do that, I'm doing great!!! (I'm very rich $ :P)
- kakwakas, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1And tastes even worse.
I go with Busch when I'm on a budget. -
