- TopherT, on 10/12/2007, -7/+33Support our troops? Ok, mr. President, you first.
- RichPowers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23I've read how the areas around military bases are full of Rent-a-Centers, short-term loan places (the kind with ridiculously high interest rates), and other shyster businesses. It's shameless how they prey on servicemen like that.
- Xnus980w, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19I think the army is not worry about them stealing submarine. They are more concern with people stealing high level intellegence and sell it to the enemy for a profit.
- Djerrid, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20"The Pentagon contends that fiscal problems can distract deployed personnel from their duties and make them vulnerable to bribery and treason."
Treason?!? Ye of little faith in our soldiers indeed! - joeblowurho, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20Or they could just say they're gay.
- cvrefugee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10You could also avoid going to Iraq by not joining the military...
- cfpresley, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11The title refers to people already in the service, those who have already volunteered to serve.
All the Americans who enjoy the rights afforded to them that are unwilling to defend them, don't have to worry. Getting in huge amounts of debt to avoid service is just about as dumb as the Marine that had his friend drop a barbel on his leg to break it.
Those in the military that don't want to do the job they volunteered for can leave. We don't need them around. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9i maxed out my unlimited credit card earlier
they decided trying to buy a $10 billion sub from the russians was just too much credit for me, and would not pay it back anytime soon - Muyoso, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Instead of instantly taking a doom and gloom view on this, how about thinking about it for a second. What would happen to the soldier's wife and kids if he died, and they were in major debt? Do you want soldiers on the battlefield that are distracted about their situation at home?
- cfpresley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Military pay is decent depending on your pay grade, and what you do compared to comparable civilian pay. I wouldn't say that military pay is great. As far as living above one's means, I would say that military members probably do it at the same rate as everyone else. We are all living in a consumerist society.
- gojeda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Up next: How to avoid getting cancer by jumping off a really tall building.
- scott1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9"What, they're afraid someone's going to steal a submarine and sell it to pay off the bank loan?"
I heard about a guy who tried to steal a pair of $20,000 night vision googles(it was the 80's) from the Army(and they took it very seorisly).
Might not be a bad idea to not have to worry about going to Iraq and paying off your dept... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7i thought the economy was doing great?
- fgsfds, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Actually, in a move that's pissed me off severely, rather than dismissing homosexuals as soon as they are discovered they are forcing them to serve out their term and then giving them a dishonorable discharge.
That means that they are denied all benefits, and they're left worse than if they had never served at all. I find that to be completely inexcusable - if they aren't dismissed for it when it's discovered, then the military has NO right to discharge them later. They DESERVE their benefits for time served. - dandiemer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It's fun to get in debt, and easy too!
- n8r0n, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7The problem is that many service members try to live well above thier means. Military pay is not that bad, but with many military members using the nearby Rent to Own and Payday Loan places it gets many of them in trouble.
- floorman56, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Gays ARE NOT given a dishonorable discharge You receive a dishonorable discharge (DD) when you separate from the service under dishonorable conditions. You may receive a dishonorable discharge only by a general court-martial and as appropriate for serious offenses calling for dishonorable separation as part of the punishment.
They are usually separated General (under honorable conditions)
Granted they can be court-martial for engaging in sex acts but the command usually just lets them go - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+17If the draft is ever reinstated I am moving to canada. Seriously. Better a frycook in Canada than floating in rice paddies in 'Nam......er sorry wrong war.....than being rammed by a sucide bomber bus in iraq.
- agreen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4this will not get you out of military service. there are plenty of crappy jobs in the military that dont require a clearance. i wouldn't recommend this method
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4We put our soldiers through a lot of crap. A lot of them do it even when they don't believe in it, or even agree with it. At the least, they should be given certain privileges/help, like maybe helping them out of debt? We spend how much on our military budget? Can't we reappropriate some to actually HELPING THE PEOPLE WHO DO THE DIRTY WORK? Hearing about these guys getting screwed over is news that always surprises me in the respect that it still won't get people talking.
- jaycliche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3or not joining within the past 8 years.
- Asianwaste, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This won't work too long. You have a credit history and if your history shows your debt drastically climbing before deployment, they'll know why. Knowing this they'll either call this an act of malingering or will deploy you regardless. I was an MP and the prime time for people to do some of the most stupid and odd things is invariably before a unit deployment. You won't believe what some of these guys would do just to avoid a deployment only to be sent anyways and punished later.
- ScionX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ummm, No.
Buried as innacurate. Lose your clearance? They don't send you home, nor keep you there if you haven't left yet. They simply either retrain you to another MOS that doesn't require a clearance or just give you another job to do. - jaycliche, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Freedoms that we take for granted like Habeas Corpus?
- cvrefugee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Praise Jehovah! What about donating blood?
- aceg1357, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3inaccurate article. talk to anyone in the service. how does an article like this get 201 diggs?
- Clearz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Well if its a choice betweec debt or death i'd go with debt any day.
- gd007, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I maxed out my credit cards already.
- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Chickenhawks take note.
- jaycliche, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"I've read how the areas around military bases are full of Rent-a-Centers, short-term loan places (the kind with ridiculously high interest rates), and other shyster businesses. It's shameless how they prey on servicemen like that."
This happened during the beginning of the Vietnam war, and this was the beginning of the soldiers against the war. See the movie Sir, No Sir
http://www.sirnosir.com/ - jarinudom, on 03/31/2008, -1/+3Happened to me :)
- ChileanGoD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3So, a military guy could buy a PS3 or two and he doesnt have to go to iraq? Sounds like an almost win win situation.
- cfpresley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You can "be" homosexual (they also include bisexuals in the ***** category) and serve in the military.
The only way that can happen is if you never tell anyone, and you never get caught commiting homosexual acts.
Besides all of this, Anyone subject to the draft is an American first, even if it for a meaningless war, the freedoms you & others take for granted do come at a price. Whether that price is paid by you, or another American. Are we all so selfish? - scott1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I burried your story as spam and it's also a dupe:
EDIT I shouldn't post a link to that story since that would be spam - KrystalSasha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Financial problems are the overwhelming reason for revoking security clearances. Other factors include criminal activity, questionable allegiance and ill health."
So then if they ever do initiate a draft again, if you can't into debt fast enough to avoid the overseas combat, you could always do one of the other things they mentioned! By the way, since it was mentioned here, do they truly have issues with gay (and I'd assume bisexual as well) soldiers? I mean, I can see the type of problems that could arise, but how does it affect your ability to get enlisted, et cetera? I think going bi would prove less troublesome than criminal activity or questionable allegiance, if it could truly keep you from being drafted! - noreturn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Newsflash: Banks don't make money by people not paying them back.
- ScionX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No, I just know what the military is capable of doing, and has already done. I know plenty of people over here that are pretty much in debt. I mean hell, if you fail AIT now-adays you don't get kicked out of the ARMY, they simply throw you in a field that they need more people in.
- vadco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Crazy thought. Clear the debt of everyone that joins the service that goes overseas. That is the least we should be able to do for those who go. You might even get more people to sign-up.
- nazadus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6The problem is many people joined up thinking it would be a free ride for college.
I believe that because of that, they are probably young (you usually go to college when you are young) so they have exceptionally poor spending habits as well.
If it's found you did it on purpose, they needs your ass scrubbing toilets with toothbrushes until your ass is out of debt. Make them learn their lesson.
Because the governemnt owns you (more or less) they should take your pay, pay your bills and give you spare money. Flag your credit so you can't use credit (this has got to be possible, somehow?) and get further.
You ***** up, they should spank you and help you get back on your feet. Repeated offenses should get you a ro-sham-bo or something of equivalent punishment.. or perhaps a dishonorably discharge (as you've proven yourself to not be responsible).
Granted, I'm not in the military (I tried, but my disease prohibits me) -- so my opinion shouldn't count for more than a grain of salt because I really don't know ***** about what they go through. - PrimoTurbo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It’s a legitimate reason surprisingly. The insurgency will actually pay you if you give them a tank or something a long the lines. Then you come back to the base, say you were ambushed, tank was hit and you got away. Of course you first have to kill all your friends since 1 tank is controlled by 3 people.
- jaycliche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Or you could have a kid or two...that would leave you pretty broke. Our military cares for it's soldiers...haven't you seen the commercials? Get money for college (all 21% of you who actually do)
- jaycliche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Obviously, there are soldiers on this digg...can any of you say what your starting pay was?
- fanboydcs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i would rather cut off a toe than be in debt... or wait the people I owe money to already did that...
- Soldan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1payday loan places suck.... nuff said.
- Asianwaste, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They do. But they cut off half your pay until it's all paid off.
- Kiljoy001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Nazadus
The millitary has an excellent way of preventing such things... there was/is an standing order that may not rack up unreasonable amounts of debt, and you MUST pay your bills. If you don't they throw Chapter 17 of the USMCJ at you... And then your career is screwed. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If a recruitment officer ever approaches me I'd be like, "How about I suck yo dick..if I join the military i'd be doing it everyday."
either:
a. He says okay, which then you can get him fired
b. they will never contact you again
How to avoid service? Be gay! It's not as bad as ruining your credit score like the article suggests. - goffy59, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Good thing I don't believe in war, so I wont have to go legally.
- jackkerouac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"If the draft is ever reinstated I am moving to canada. Seriously. Better a frycook in Canada than floating in rice paddies in 'Nam......er sorry wrong war.....than being rammed by a sucide bomber bus in iraq."
Nice. Try reading this:
"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."
