- ctutt, on 11/23/2007, -1/+22Thank you for a profoundly meaningful, helpful, supportive, positive and well written article. I'm finally living my dream at age 65. Were it not for naysayers, I would have started when I was 18.
I find every one of your articles either practical and helpful and/or inspirational.
Thank You for doing what you do so well.
Charles - Comatose51, on 11/23/2007, -0/+8Naysayers do it because they're afraid that someone will do what they never had the will to do and thus be weaker by comparison.

- felchdonkey, on 11/24/2007, -0/+5That's not following your dream, it's following your laziness.
People who follow their dreams work at them with singleminded focus, and stick to one dream. Jumping from "get rich quick" scheme to scheme isn't anything like working hard to achieve a dream. - sockpuppets, on 11/23/2007, -1/+6Watch for me on American Idol. Thank you, Digg!
- bmarc, on 11/23/2007, -0/+5Great Article, my dream is to be a Helicopter Search & Rescue pilot.
- spin-docta, on 11/23/2007, -1/+5Amen to this.
- hudzilla, on 11/23/2007, -0/+4I want to be a lion tamer!
I've got a hat that says "Lion Tamer". - felchdonkey, on 11/24/2007, -0/+3I'm 37, and I've seen a lot of people who have both succeeded and failed at reaching for their dreams.
There are a lot of things that can happen, but I've seen one thing that is true every time: people who have a fallback plan always end up falling back. - robbiekhan, on 11/23/2007, -0/+3Really nice post, my dream is photography but since I come from a traditional background my parents etc regard photography as a non stable career and something that is not akin to tradition and social status among our culture.
Yesterday's generation just do not understand today's generation, a generation of ideas and great potential and it's such a shame.
I am going to continue my drive for photographic success and nothing will take me away from that even if it means going against tradition as it's the only way to show people like this that success is not how much money you make or what your job title is but in fact what you do that makes you happy and the service you provide.
I think Will Smith said it great in the film Pursuit of Happyness (a wonderful film by the way):
"Don't ever let somebody tell you... You can't do something. Not even me. All right? "
"You got a dream... You gotta protect it. People can't do somethin' themselves, they wanna tell you you can't do it. If you want somethin', go get it. Period." - inactive, on 11/24/2007, -0/+2Right said, burn the bridges!
- artsyave, on 11/23/2007, -1/+3Great advice on following your dreams. Beautifully written.
There are negative people and naysayers in our lives, some of them may be the closest people to us. What to do about it?
Inspirational article. - felchdonkey, on 11/24/2007, -0/+2It's true - the only way you're going to achieve something incredible is if you have absolutely no other choice but to succeed. Who's got a better chance of making it - the person who risked everything to chase their dream, who would face humiliation and poverty if they gave up, or the person who made sure to have a fallback plan, and is just "trying this in my spare time" to see if it might work?
- Sevzi, on 11/23/2007, -1/+2Dream about a plane of infinite power (sequentially timed though) with first one, then two occupant gods. Oh, actually that will happen to us all soon.
- cryptoki, on 02/01/2008, -2/+3living in true peace and love is where its at. The two greatest things are free.
Wordly beauty fades but the word of God lives forever. - theutopian, on 11/23/2007, -1/+2In the words of J. Michael Stracynski "Never Surrender Dreams."
- diizy, on 11/23/2007, -1/+2Zenhabits is a top blog for articles such as these.
- nousplacidus, on 11/24/2007, -1/+2The only problem I see is that a small dose of reality can be misconstrued as "naysaying". You can get a college degree in almost anything you want, and having the piece of paper will go a long way if you decide you want to join the corporate world.
fallback plan naysaying - vermicin, on 11/24/2007, -1/+2while i'm all for following your dreams, you also have to know when to quit.
personal story here: my father is CONVINCED that he's too good for regular work. That, because he once made X dollars, he's not going to accept work for anything less than X. He wants a job where he does nothing, and gets paid a lot of money for it. First it was a bunch of retarded sales programs (a la herbalife), then house flipping, then promisory note flipping, and now internet affiliate marketing. He lost one house, then another, then spent all of his retirement account, and is now flat broke and has nothing to show for it. He keeps telling me, when I tell him to get a real job, that he's just "following his dream." He's moving out of his apartment because he can no longer afford it. He's going to be crashing with a friend for a while, but I know that'll last a couple months at best. By this time next year he'll be sleeping on my couch or in his car. But god forbid he gets a regular job.
So shut up. - NoVABaller, on 11/24/2007, -0/+1Buried for inaccuracy. You clearly didn't read the article...
- dancingcrane7, on 06/05/2009, -0/+0After all this time, this is still my favorite of all zenhabits posts, and zenhabits.net is still my favorite blog.
- MortalynFlux, on 11/23/2007, -0/+0I squash the Naysayers like a little bug!!!
- Tuto, on 11/23/2007, -2/+1Great article. Although i have to say that some dreams are not meant to come true, and in these cases its a good thing to have somebody in your live to give other perspective on the matter. Naturally I mean somebody that can give you constructive advices and opinions rather than naysayers.
- nshah, on 11/23/2007, -3/+2Well written but if the advice fails, a swift kick to the genitalia will work as well.
- bdbr, on 11/23/2007, -6/+1The assumption of this article, of course, is that every wild-assed dream of every teenager is the "right path".
