- gasherthegrey, on 11/11/2009, -1/+51Tony: Bart, um, is it wrong to steal a loaf of bread to feed your starving family?
Bart: No.
Tony: Well, suppose you got a large starving family. Is it wrong to steal a truckload of bread to feed them?
Bart: Uh uh.
Tony: And, what if your family don't like bread? They like... cigarettes?
Bart: I guess that's okay.
Tony: Now, what if instead of giving them away, you sold them at a price that was practically giving them away. Would that be a crime, Bart?
Bart: Hell, no! - dragonrebornn, on 11/11/2009, -0/+32shoplifting a t-bone, now that is a mis-Steak
- snowplow527, on 11/11/2009, -1/+30and here I am using coupons and hunting for low price deals like a sucker.
It feels extremely irritating to know that while I try hard to save money and give up luxuries like daily meat/out of season fruits some people just go and steal caviar and filet mignons because saving money is beneath them.
Looks like being slightly less wealthy is so deplorable people will steal just to avoid eating poor people food. - Natru3al, on 11/11/2009, -0/+26Looks like no one wants to eat humble pie.
- milsorgn, on 11/11/2009, -4/+22They certainly aren't stealing toothpaste!
- gkiltz, on 11/11/2009, -3/+14Shoplifters come from EVERY socioeconomic group, and EVERY ethnicity.
Shoplifting to support a lifestyle is simply an excuse. Shoplifting is, unfortunately a form of obsessive-compulsive behavior. The seed for it is planted in the pre-teens and it is often fully developed by the mid-20s. Best approach is to nip it in the bud, early, before it has a chance to fully develop.
You can tell, by the time you catch your third shoplifter, which ones are the experienced ones that have been doing it for a while, and which ones are doing it for the first, or nearly the first time. If you get to it EARLY, there is a real chance to change it. The longer it goes untreated the harder it gets to treat. - cplusplus, on 11/11/2009, -1/+12Where's the "how-to" tips?

From the article:
"Neil Matthews, vice-president of Checkpoint Systems, said that he was astonished at the rise of middle-class shoplifters. “We are not simply looking at your traditional shoplifters here. We are seeing more instances of amateur thieves stealing goods for their own personal use rather than to sell on than before,” he said." - sciencelovesyou, on 11/11/2009, -0/+8That was a meaty pun.

- Strenoth, on 11/11/2009, -0/+5That doesn't make any sense, the 'excuse' part. Why would there be such a sudden surge if it was just about obsessive compulsive behavior?

Not everything thinks the way you describe about media, however many of us have issues with paying big industries money that rarely makes it to the artist. You're right, some would just as well take it for free, but many of us want to support the artist but not the industry. It's a fine line to walk.
So far as paying a doctor or prescription out of pocket - look, if you're paying insurance (or your employer is), the point is that you should not *have* to pay out of pocket. Often insurance companies are looking for any and every excuse not to pay, but the alternative of not having insurance is worse. That doesn't make the person spoiled, it makes them screwed. Granted, it's FAR better than living in a 3rd world country where healthcare is hard to come by (along with work, food, shelter, clean drinking water, etc), but when you are paying for something once, you shouldn't have to be paying for it again, and get sub-par coverage at that.
You are right though - most people are spoiled. Not for the reasons you're mentioning though. - chriscanada, on 11/11/2009, -1/+4Jail the *****!
- MonkeyOverlord, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3Better in what sense? I actually have some mercy for a drug user supporting their habit. A middle class family shoplifting expensive food to keep up with the Joneses? Arrest the perp(s), pay back the store and throw away the key when the perps get in jail. Take away state assistance too while you're at it so they have to work at a gas station when they get out of jail.
They're no different than a guy who robs your house while you're away because he wants your big screen TV. - gasherthegrey, on 11/11/2009, -1/+4@ allisonV12: Says the loser who logged onto Digg just to give a random stranger ***** over a Simpsons quote.

- inactive, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3Define "artist"
An average movie literally has THOUSANDS of employees working on it. There is no one single artist, you can say the director or the screenwriter is the artist but at the end of the day they are still just one puzzle piece in the grand scheme of things and I hardly think most Hollywood directors are getting screwed. Now writers can get screwed in the Hollywood economics scam but that is more owed to them not getting a good lawyer or reading the fine print before signing off their life's work and in that case I think it is their fault.
Also the healthcare thing, i'm sorry but we need to eliminate insurance companies paying for doctor's visits. I pay 90 bucks to get my teeth cleaned every 6 months and my insurance reimburses me for 40, but in the end it is kind of silly if you think about it as I am paying close to that amount out of my paycheck anyway for dental insurance, if I could drop my rates significantly i'd only pay out of pocket and have a cheaper premium for disaster insurance if I got all my teeth knocked out in an accident, but no many plans "force" you into accepting coverage for checkups.
The main problem with this too is people abusing the system, I have an aunt who literally goes to her doctor every 3 weeks looking for nasal medicine, antibiotics, you name it because of her "allergies" which in reality are more in her mind and she'd do better to just go to walgreens and get an over the counter prescription. It sucks up resources and raises our rates. - Skaistrendy, on 11/11/2009, -3/+6I am sure if this post was about Americans, there would be a different tune of "Only in America!"

- hereticoftruth, on 11/11/2009, -1/+3I saw a lot of "justifications" for shop lifting in these responses. Many people would rather be part of the problem than part of the solution.
- Cyberdactyl, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2The irony here is supposedly these people shoplift to keep up 'appearances'.
But if they are caught, the little gain from having Rogue River Blue at a cocktail party is vastly undercut by having your mugshot along side some toothless crack whore from Brixton. - Elranzer, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2The Times they are a-chaingin'

- mah2cent, on 11/12/2009, -1/+2Of course I do, but it is not living when the government steals your wealth. Perhaps you don't understand the constitution or the rule of law. Perhaps you prefer the government deciding how they want you to live, what you can smoke, drink, educate your kids; in short, what is best for you. As for me, I can and do think for myself and don't need nor want government making decisions for me. Each to their own. But this country (USA) was founded on the concept of a free society, to live your life as you see fit, with a very small central government without a standing army, and very limited functions. Now, thanks to Lincoln, Wilson, Hoover, FDR, and all following them, we no longer have a free society, we have a warfare/welfare state what the result of greatly diminished rights and freedom.
I believe it was Jefferson who said: ""A government big enough to supply you with everything you need, is a government big enough to take away everything that you have....". That is what we now have.
Maybe you think the US as a peace loving nation. Then you should just look at its war history:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_United_St ... - inactive, on 11/11/2009, -1/+2We got a digg war going on, 6+, -6, those who believe in personal responsibility versus those who think everything is owed to them.

- ghengiskhan1, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1Times are a bit difficult right now yeah? People stealing a bit of food here and there to maintain a lifestyle.
Just wait until there are real shortages of food as the global economy continues to decline. What happens when there is no food in the stores to steal? If you dont think that is going to happen then youre probably going to be experiencing what I call "starving to death."
It will be a very bloody, brutal existance and only those who are prepared will survive.
Middle class people stealing food is just an early step before the actual food riots start. - MistrBrownstone, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1FTA: "The information comes from more than 42,000 shops in Europe with combined sales of £262 billion"
So each "shop" is doing sales of £6.2 million a year? Maybe shop means something different in Europe, but I'm pretty sure the mom and pop butcher shop down the street from me doesn't do anywhere near that kind of business. - mah2cent, on 11/11/2009, -1/+2Sorry, I quit voting because of this. - MonkeyOverlord, on 11/11/2009, -10/+9Why does this surprise anyone? This is the same Western, middle class culture which believes it shouldn't ever have to pay for a movie or song before it can have it. It's the same culture that gets deeply offended at the very notion of paying a doctor or for a prescription out of one's own money, even if you agree that the health insurance companies are scum and that structural changes need to go into place to make health care cheaper. It's the same culture that believes that bubbles shouldn't be allowed to burst.
The average middle class Westerner is a spoiled brat. - MonkeyOverlord, on 11/11/2009, -3/+2-About the artists... do you really think you're doing the artists a favor by not buying their music when they're up to their ears in liabilities to the labels? That point also has nothing do with movies which are actually made by the studios, and where the "artists" (ie, actors) are actually work-for-hire from the beginning just like the guys who clean the sets.
-About insurance... do you expect your car insurance to pay for scheduled maintenance? If not, then why not? That's no different than expecting them to pay for a doctor's visit when you don't have a credible reason to believe that a catastrophic injury has occurred or will occur. The point of health insurance should be 100% coverage for all debilitating conditions, not basic coverage when you have the sniffles.
Health insurance also flat out breaks down when discussing the elderly because the elderly are going to get progressively worse, thus the liabilities of the companies will go up. The only solution is expect people to use health savings accounts to save up enough money to cover old age treatments. - allisonV12, on 11/11/2009, -2/+1@ gasherthegrey: Says the loser who logged onto Digg just to give a random stranger *****.
