- zjbird, on 10/07/2008, -7/+529Just play WoW, you will never go out and waste money again.
- swaxhog, on 10/07/2008, -7/+371I'm just finishing paying $750 every two weeks for the last 8 years. $14k in 20 months is a walk in the park. Nov 4th is my debt free day I plan to celebrate by buying something really expensive and putting it on my line of credit! On second thought, maybe that isn't the best idea.
- Night201, on 10/07/2008, -4/+354She paid off her debts by living on less than she makes? Amazing!
- Gaalsien, on 10/07/2008, -3/+316Laying off your gardener who you've been paying $500 a year. Fiscal genius.
- novadaemon, on 10/07/2008, -3/+310You know you're addicted to WoW when you start refering to dollars as gold. Spending 120g a night in RL? That's crazy.
- Gupfee, on 10/07/2008, -4/+286And the really cool thing is she didn't beg on the Internet for people to send her money.
- MrFurious2k, on 10/07/2008, -11/+265Fiscal responsibility is something most people have discovered that they don't have to obey.
- Don't have enough for your house payment? Complain about the lender.
- Aren't saving anything for retirement? There is social security.
- Worried that Social Security won't be able to survive under its own weight? Don't worry, you'll be able to vote generous tax increases on people who actually did save later.
- Bought one too many pairs of shoes, plasma TV, and electronics and now have a huge credit card debt? Don't worry, it's their fault they gave you such a high limit. File bankruptcy.
Hey - I get that people can fall into hard times and then have massive debt that they can't get out of. However, there is a difference between that and what most people are in financial trouble for. They buy too much and save too little. Now that we're seeing the global effects of that lifestyle, those of us who were saving are taking the brunt of it. Responsibility loses again. - WNW3, on 10/07/2008, -42/+226Dugg for flashing the horns. ROCK AND ROLL!
- Literaturfan, on 10/07/2008, -8/+150Putting your credit card in the freezer. What a crazy idea! But to tell you the truth, I think it's a good measure to control your expenses!!!
- inactive, on 10/07/2008, -4/+138Actually as crazy as it sounds, it is legite. I used to go out to bars and clubs, spending 120 gold a night easy, now I spend mosty of my time playing WoW with friends, I save about about 600 a month easy. I know it sounds rediculous but true. In the past 2 years thats is about $14,000. And no hang overs.
- Kazbaeden, on 10/07/2008, -1/+120This is a concept even the American Government can't understand. For a lot of people, it's rocket science.
- Battlecry, on 10/07/2008, -2/+116$156,000?? That's a lot of hookers and blow.

- KinGvsKinG, on 10/07/2008, -4/+70so you haven't had sex in the past two years?
- Porridge1, on 10/07/2008, -8/+72I don't want to sound like a prick, but I don't really see what is so special about paying off $716.50 a month. When I was in serious debt, I took a second job and paid off roughly equivalent expenses a lot quicker than that.
Having said that I did become a lot more prudent with my spending after clearing my debt as I never wanted to repeat that experience - DeFex, on 10/07/2008, -4/+61This person needs to be hired by the US government.

- hokie47, on 10/07/2008, -0/+50You can still drink and play WoW
- StuartGibson, on 06/14/2009, -1/+51Yet it's astonishing how many people don't seem to be able to grasp the concept.
"Oh I'm so in debt" - whilst whipping out the Visa to buy another pair of shoes. - darkstar949, on 10/07/2008, -1/+51Or it is a house - $750 every two weeks is $1500 a month which isn't completely unheard of for a mortgage payment.
- freehunter, on 10/07/2008, -8/+56Seriously, who pays for a gardener? If you do, you don't deserve any of my sympathy. It takes one hour to mow a half acre, if you have more than that to mow, maybe you should let nature take some of it back. To take care of burms and flowers, weed killer in the cedar and the right flowers for your environment and sun exposure, they won't need any fancier care than maybe some water. Buy perennials, you won't have to replant them.
- passedoutghost, on 10/07/2008, -6/+51$500 a year, where can I get such a gardener?!
Oh wait, never mind, Mexico. - explnx, on 04/27/2009, -4/+49Or just only use it so buy stuff you can afford.
- boneit, on 10/07/2008, -2/+43Just pay the balance each month like a sane person. You should also be getting cash back. I get $500 from mine every six to eight months by trading in my points for cash instead of those grossly over priced reward items.
Also, by using a c/card you give yourself a two to four week buffer on your finances, depending on the billing terms. - whoitis, on 10/07/2008, -3/+42two words: Dave Ramsey

savings: $5000/year - consoneo, on 10/07/2008, -3/+41Having cards with no balance helps your score. You do not have to have money on them getting finance charges. Just pay them off every month.
- T8erT0T, on 10/07/2008, -4/+40Rule #1: Start slinging rock to supplement income.
- SmpleJohn, on 10/07/2008, -2/+38Basically, follow everything Dave Ramsey says. Rock on indeed though. I'm about a year out from that point, including student loans and a retarded time share. It sure feels good seeing an end though.
- StuartGibson, on 06/14/2009, -3/+38If you don't plan on having credit then not boosting you credit score is hardly a concern. In the article she already has a mortgage, so doesn't need to boost her credit score for that. The only reason to want a high credit score is to get more credit. Once you decide that you no longer want to live in debt you stop worrying about things like credit scores.
My only debts are mortgage and what little remains of my student loan. I do have a credit card for convenience and safety when buying, but it automatically direct debits every month. Anything else I can't immediately afford I save for. Permanently living in debt is no way to live. - austinisi, on 10/07/2008, -2/+37SUBJECT: REQUEST FOR URGENT BUSINESS RELATIONSHIP
DEAR AMERICAN:
I NEED TO ASK YOU TO SUPPORT AN URGENT SECRET BUSINESS RELATIONSHIP WITH A TRANSFER OF FUNDS OF GREAT MAGNITUDE.
I AM MINISTRY OF THE TREASURY OF THE REPUBLIC OF AMERICA. MY COUNTRY HAS HAD CRISIS THAT HAS CAUSED THE NEED FOR LARGE TRANSFER OF FUNDS OF 800 BILLION DOLLARS US. IF YOU WOULD ASSIST ME IN THIS TRANSFER, IT WOULD BE MOST PROFITABLE TO YOU.
I AM WORKING WITH MR. PHIL GRAM, LOBBYIST FOR UBS, WHO WILL BE MY REPLACEMENT AS MINISTRY OF THE TREASURY IN JANUARY. AS A SENATOR, YOU MAY KNOW HIM AS THE LEADER OF THE AMERICAN BANKING DEREGULATION MOVEMENT IN THE 1990S. THIS TRANSACTIN IS 100% SAFE.
THIS IS A MATTER OF GREAT URGENCY. WE NEED A BLANK CHECK. WE NEED THE FUNDS AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. WE CANNOT DIRECTLY TRANSFER THESE FUNDS IN THE NAMES OF OUR CLOSE FRIENDS BECAUSE WE ARE CONSTANTLY UNDER SURVEILLANCE. MY FAMILY LAWYER ADVISED ME THAT I SHOULD LOOK FOR A RELIABLE AND TRUSTWORTHY PERSON WHO WILL ACT AS A NEXT OF KIN SO THE FUNDS CAN BE TRANSFERRED.
PLEASE REPLY WITH ALL OF YOUR BANK ACCOUNT, IRA AND COLLEGE FUND ACCOUNT NUMBERS AND THOSE OF YOUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN TO WALLSTREETBAILOUT@TREASURY.GOV
SO THAT WE MAY TRANSFER YOUR COMMISSION FOR THIS TRANSACTION. AFTER I RECEIVE THAT INFORMATION, I WILL RESPOND WITH DETAILED INFORMATION ABOUT SAFEGUARDS THAT WILL BE USED TO PROTECT THE FUNDS.
YOURS FAITHFULLY MINISTER OF TREASURY PAULSON - laserdog, on 10/07/2008, -0/+35For $500 a year, gardener probably just means "guy who mows her lawn".
- MrsButtersworth, on 10/07/2008, -4/+38$60 a month at Starbucks?!?!?! ***** *****!
- Tarantulus, on 10/07/2008, -6/+39Forgive me if I'm an ass, but this is surely all common sense... oh wait... maybe that's why I DON'T HAVE 14k of debt.
- ninjaskimo, on 10/07/2008, -1/+34Take all my money!!
- djmccormick, on 10/07/2008, -3/+34WoW costs $15 a month. RL costs more than that a day.
- Spuy767, on 10/07/2008, -17/+47I'm not piggybacking the first comment just for diggs, but this is important, so listen up. She cancelled all her cards when they were payed off, which is a bad idea. You see, to improve your credit score, you need to have credit, but it can't be maxed out. The best way to improve your credit is to use credit cards for mundane expenses keep a minimal rolling balance on each. In the year and a half before I bought my house, I kept 6 cards, with about $90,000 in credit total. On each of those cards I kept a balance of a few hundred dollars at most. In that time, my credit score went from just over 750 to over 800. Keeping credit cards is a good idea, but you HAVE to be responsible. And you can't just cut them up, because you'll eventually pay the balances off, and if you don't have a balance on the card, that credit doesn't help your score. The key is to pay off your debt AND have a good credit score. Financial stability is easy, but it requires responsibility, and discretion when you spend. Use a credit card for every day expenses, but keep a register just like a checkbook, and don't spend more than you can afford to pay off at the end of each month. A few bucks in interest a month is a small price to pay for good credit.
- Antimatter85, on 10/07/2008, -0/+29You have long weeks in your country
