- metapop, on 08/18/2008, -0/+5slice of pizza at sbarro: $2.49.
house in detroit: $1.
how are they wrong again?
honestly though, with deals like this, you have a headache on your hands with squatters, tearing the place down, and paying back taxes... but, if you have an extra $20,000 or so and feel like making a long term investment, it's still a good deal. - willgonz, on 08/18/2008, -1/+5I'll buy that for a dollar.
- Narrwald, on 08/18/2008, -0/+3I live near Detroit and have been there numerous times... I wouldn't live in that neighborhood, for any sort of deal.
- metapop, on 08/18/2008, -0/+3sort of like being on the south pole... the only way to go is north. it can only get better, and certainly will if more of these deals emerge, people will come in and buy these places, and neighborhoods will begin to regenerate. they're not going to stay trashed forever. i'm sure people said the same thing about manhattan in the late 70's and 80's, and look at it now.
- inactive, on 08/19/2008, -0/+2buy houses for pennies on the dollar!!!
send a check for $39.99 for my new book - J3553, on 08/19/2008, -0/+2you couldn't pay me to live in detroit.
- metapop, on 08/18/2008, -0/+2as in my reply to GBowski, I mentioned that deals like this generally require you to:
a) pay back taxes, which could be quite a lot of money
b) get rid of squatters, deal with legally ejecting them from the house
c) most likely be forced to destroy the house entirely.
still, a lot for 15-20K in a developing neighborhood is a great deal, if you've got the cash to do it. - sgiffy, on 08/19/2008, -0/+2Not just the cash, but the know-how as well. Depending you may have just bought yourself a yearly $4000 tax and utilities bill for a dollar. Its much easier to lose a bunch of money on ***** like this than to make it.

- Narrwald, on 08/18/2008, -0/+1If you could call that a developing neighborhood. I live near Detroit and have been there numerous times... I wouldn't live in that neighborhood, for any sort of deal.
- DrDustbunny, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1Only house in the world where the land tax is MORE then the cost. o.0
- GBowski, on 08/18/2008, -5/+0"...now you can own a home for less than the cost of a slice of pizza."
Where the hell can you get a slice of pizza for a dollar?
