- synaesthesia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5With more and more people living in cities (and more expected to in the future), I can forsee a world where primarily microjets are used to hop between them while train systems and bikes become more popular for getting around within the city. With modern communications (cellular phones, Internet and television) linking us together and cheap microjet flights on the fast track to becoming a reality, it seems like the world just got a whole lot smaller.
- dpk87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Cool.
On a side note, the Live Science site is really poorly designed. - dlprager, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wonder how much it will retail for and what it's range is. At a higher cruising altitude than most commercial airliners, the fuel efficiency really should be quite good, and at 470 or so MPH it is barely slower than the cruising speed of a 737 (about 490MPH).
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I believe the speed and altitude numbers quoted in the article were the maximums.. not the cruising numbers.
- KChambers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This concept looks really great and could be what allows me to cash in on my promise of buying a jet someday. The aviation industry could just some healthy competition and Honda's entry is certainly a great stepping stone towards a vibrant light aircraft market.
/The LiveScience article is also much better than the previously posted article. - dpk87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No price estimates?
- sanman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ndege, you make a good point - micro jet means micro range, unfortunately. Not enough room to carry lots of fuel. But in Asia and Europe, they don't have such big distances to travel as in the US.
Perhaps Honda should think about a way to offer some kind of add-on fuel tanks to extend the range of the jet. Didn't Eclipse originally brag about the fuel-sipping cruise missile turbofan engines they had? Later, they had to drop those engines to go with a more proven solution. What's the range on Eclipse now? - sanman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh, here we go:
http://www.eclipseaviation.com/eclipse_500/capabilities/
"The Eclipse 500 has a maximum cruise speed of 370 knots, it can carry up to six occupants, and has a generous range of 1,125 nautical miles. A 41,000-foot ceiling..."
So about the same range, but slower speed. Is HondaJet superior to Eclipse then? - mikeyG9x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maximum speed: 778 km/hr (420 knots)
Operational ceiling: 12,497 m (41,000 ft)
Range: 2,037 km (1,100 nm )
http://world.honda.com/HondaJet/ - KChambers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Starkville? You've gotta be kidding. Never been to worse area, save maybe West Alabama south of Tuscaloosa.
- invader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i was about to say the same thing.. i wanna know how many decades i'll have to save up to make a down payment on one of these..
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2dugg the original since the description is much better
- TheBarge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well this story has most likely been buried, but as a followup, yes, Starkville, at Brian Field. Here's the only source I could find that mentions it:
http://www.businessnc.com/archives/2004/08/jet_set.html
Halfway down the page below the blue text:
"It moved seven engineers and their families from Tokyo to Starkville. One was Michimasa Fujino, now chief engineer for the Greensboro project."
Holy crap, could you imagine moving from Tokyo to freakin' Starkville? But yes, it is true. The version of the HondaJet I saw fly was an early one with forward swept wings. - pcheaven2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll take 2~
- relaxmax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Or the i-Vtec version for that matter!
- ndege, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Range is stated as: 1,100 nm
Distance from KLGA (La Guardia Airport) to KLAX (Los Angeles International Airport) is 2139 nm. - TheBarge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just an added note they don't mention. Honda actually took an EXISTING business jet (a Beechcraft I think), completely disassembled it, and reassembled it in a different configuration to form their HondaJet. Not saying it's not cool, but just wanted to point that out. They actually designed and built the aircraft in a closed hangar surrounded by razor wire at a small airfield in Starkville, MS. I used to live there, they've been developing this thing for a quite a long time. I saw it in the air during test flights years ago.
- j00fek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Honda FTW
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i was watching the news today and they said the jet cost about 4 million dollars. I was wondering if this jet can fly from L.A to NYC nonstop. anyone know?
- CiXeL, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1you can stop jacking off to science and technology already. i used to be just like you and then real life kicks in. youre refreshingly naive if you think companies actually want to see progress.
- carve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The Honda is not necessarily superior to the Eclipse. Remember- you're looking at the Honda's max speed and the Eclipse's cruising speed, so the speed difference probably isn't all that great. It is too bad Eclipse had to drop the william's enging though- on paper that thing was awesome. I'm really excited to see how this Honda engine pans out though.
The Honda should also be a bit bigger than the eclipse, but on the other hand it is about 3x-4x as expensive. Unless you have a big group of guys to shuttle around, or have the money to waste on extra space, I imagine companies would prefer the versatility of 2-3 smaller comprably performing jets to one larger jet. - adinb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Meh, the eclipse jet looks much more promising!
- abhijeet1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0how are you?
- abhijeet1, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0Hi how are you?
