- azurcher, on 05/11/2009, -0/+10We just tackled a bigger remodel, and found it was a great time to do it. Perhaps because work is more scarce, we had a great experience -- responsive contractors and subs who worked with us on price and went above and beyond to keep the project moving smoothly.
- YME1280, on 05/11/2009, -0/+6The grass roof has always been a really cool way of being energy efficient, while giving back to the eco-system.
- rickyisawesome, on 05/12/2009, -0/+4Buy Binford!

- Elranzer, on 05/12/2009, -0/+2You mean Pamela Anderson. A YOUNG Pamela Anderson...
- 8FoldPath, on 05/11/2009, -0/+1We're adding insulation and installing a new furnace soon. There are so many people improving their home at this time that we were put on a waiting list.
If you can't sell the home, you might as well make it worth living in. - GetMyHomesValue, on 08/27/2009, -0/+1The other great thing about making your home more energy efficient is that it increases your buyer pool at resale. More people today are conscious of the green factor and wanting their next home to be eco-friendly. And a bigger pool means selling faster and getting the best price possible!

- guffly, on 06/04/2009, -0/+1hopefully this isnt just at trend... but people will continue to be eco conscious and it will become the industry norm
- Ebacherville, on 05/13/2009, -0/+1if you really want to do some effency remodeling , you better take that stick built house and tear it down and build a new truly earth freindly home..
A properly designed home will require no heating or air conditioning systems even in extream climates like the southwest or alaska, it will generate its own power from the sun or wind and heat its own hot water.. you can attempt to do this with converntional stick built construction but its really not ideal.. People need to totally rethink what a home is .. a home should take care of you, it should not require you to FEED it fuel and power on a continual basis. - inactive, on 05/12/2009, -0/+1This is actually counter-productive. You're gonna spend $5000+ to save MAYBE $50 a month?
It's like the hybrid car hype. The extra amount you spend on the car counter-acts any savings you'd have when it comes to gas usage.
The amount is SO small that it would take 5+ years to even recover your initial investment so you can BEGIN to start saving. - mdistone, on 10/30/2009, -0/+0The contractors on Service Magic has to do it right the first time cause they will loose money. They have to pay alot of money per lead they recieve from the homeowners. They actually just make sure the company has license and insurance and how long they have been established. Any contractor can qualify with them as long as they have license. Food for thought, When you hire a contractor, do your homework, Check BBB, reviews, and years of establishment, scams and more. Always ask for references. I am in the countertop business and we always provide references upon request and they can research our reviews or see it on the site. We even do customer feedback forms for other customers to view for themselves. We like to keep a reputable company.
MDI Stone - syntaxgs, on 05/12/2009, -2/+2i,m like the home improve idea for recession but what if it go out of style when recession over??
I.mmean if recession is a style that will go out of date??
recession a style just like any thing else,,, trend that will goes away - VassilaZaitsev, on 05/12/2009, -0/+0Then when all the Eco friendly toxic China junk breaks down, try and get someone to repair it cheap.
A solar hot water system is rather complicated, valves.temp gauges, computer control module, soldered joints.
That why many are just inoperable eye candy as the repair bill would be in the thousands - inactive, on 05/12/2009, -0/+0That's fine if you're in Canada. US homeowners don't get any compensation.
Plus the problem is that most people can't take advantage of low interest rates since the majority of homeowners currently owe more on their house than its worth since values fell 30%+ (which is sorta the cause of this whole economic mess)
No bank right now will give more than a 90% LTV loan. - Kali92, on 05/13/2009, -0/+0People are still doing smaller home improvement projects. They havent' completely abandon home projects, just sticking to the smaller affordable projects.

- onsenguy, on 05/12/2009, -0/+0In Canada now the federal and provincial governments are giving out grants in the thousands of dollars for people to do eco-upgrades to their homes. We were able to re-mortgage the house at a much lower rate, added in a $15,000 loan at the new mortgage rates to cover various eco-upgrades and will still save thousands in interest over the life of the mortgage. Of that $15,000, government grants covered $6,500.
We got a new high-efficiency furnace, windows and doors and upgraded insulation throughout. Our gas bill has gone down by half saving $2,000 - $3,000/year. The house (Built in 1935) is far more comfortable and healthier than before. The resale value, even in the current economy has gone up by over $30,000. We decided against putting in a solar water heating system as the cost is too high but will put in an on-demand gas water heater as the current electric tank is costing us far too much. Once again, long-term savings with short term comfort gains.
There is more to owning a home than just energy savings and with the current low interest rates available and lower house prices (at least in the States) now is an excellent time to buy and upgrade a house. - treeo5, on 06/04/2009, -0/+0I agree it is a new day and age people are more conscious of the environment. Not to mention saving some dough

Actually, Service Magic is a pretty sweet site. My wife has used them for landscaping, hardwood flooring, painting, and a few other jobs. She swears by them, and, from what I've seen, the pros they recommend are top notch. - webmaster007k, on 05/16/2009, -0/+0nice artilces

Just flush your toilet an exta 20 times a day and call it even - Laserbeams72, on 05/12/2009, -5/+0Hey all, I haven't commented much here. But this is a topic I feel strongly about.
I work in entertainment, doing laser light shows.
Yeah Laser Floyd, Laser Zeppelin?
I'm that guy. Recently we have seen a real slowdown and it's been hairy.
We started selling these LED light bulbs and they are amazing. They last 25 times longer than a regular bulb plus they pay for themselves in 3 years give or take. 80% more efficient than incandescent and unlike CFL, these turn on at full brightness, no ramp up. Oh yeah, no mercury. It's just aluminum, a chip or three, some drivers and a lens.
We can't get these government agency types who are supposed to be following green initiatives to talk to us. Does anyone know who we should talk to? Check us out at www.reluxled.com/
