- iching, on 10/12/2007, -9/+179Gee, a major defense contractor moving its corporate headquarters out of the United States to an Arab nation.
I guess they smell Congressional hearings. - chicagobiker, on 10/12/2007, -3/+167I smell foreign based corporate tax exemption. If their headquarters are in the Untied Arab Emirates their profits are no longer subject to US federal taxes.
- iching, on 10/12/2007, -8/+143
Not just taxes, it's the DOCUMENTS and PAPER TRAIL of all their dealings, Enron did the same thing. - realyst, on 10/12/2007, -2/+100We hang the petty thieves and appoint the great ones to public office
-Aesop - jerryparid, on 10/12/2007, -10/+97***** steal American money then move out of America? /die
- AmishRefugee, on 10/12/2007, -12/+92tax exemption? i'm pretty sure Halliburton could just not pay their taxes and no one would be able to stop them
- littlebylittle, on 10/12/2007, -7/+75Yes. Cheney will be retiring there to play golf with Ken Lay and Osama bin Laden.
- ganjadude4391, on 10/12/2007, -8/+68so let me get this straight
we pay this company BILLIONS of dollars as defense contractors due to the "war on terror"
this company LEAVES our country with all that money and goes to a country in the area we are fighting
I know i am not the only one wondering what the ***** is going on with our country??? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -16/+68Cheney knows his goose is soon to be cooked, so this move
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+51Someone fears something somewhere.
- Chestnutridge, on 10/12/2007, -5/+46The word "surreal" is overused these days, but I can't think of a better term to describe my reaction to this item. It totally amazes me that there are still millions of people who take the current administration seriously!
- nomadxx7, on 10/12/2007, -5/+41So when do we become freedom fighters? Hell Brazil had the nuts to protest Bush's visit yet we in America sit on our asses and just rant about this *****. All Halliburton is doing is stealing billions of taxpayers dollars, moving abroad to Dubai (which we had a problem with taking over our ports) and everything is fine? America is headed in a huge nosedive and the average American is just sitting on the plane without parachutes as all these greedy companies jump out with diamond encrusted parachutes. Sickening to be the strongest nation in the known world and yet we sit by and let this ***** happen. Everyone (all voters) need to know the truth but all the smoke and mirrors keeps them feeling safe that the government is protecting them from the boogeyman in the closet.
- oldsk00l, on 10/12/2007, -4/+39Well the funny thing is that now they'll be able to enjoy the indoor ski area, that their god damn blood money helped pay for.
Bastard sons of whores. - UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -10/+44@brivapor
Cheney's already buying stock in foreign markets in anticipation of the dollar losing value. I think it was somewhere in the area of $15 million. - sergeantmudd, on 10/12/2007, -8/+42@richardnixon
If Halliburton picked up everything, cut all ties and said goodbye to America forever, I would be happy. But they are not, they are an American defense contractor and a major oil service supplier who are moving to the Middle East for political reasons and to be closer to oil barons. It's just more foreign pressure on US politics. More oil money flowing into the States to buy our politicians. So yes I hate Halliburton and no, I'm not glad they are picking up shop and moving. - MicroBerto, on 10/12/2007, -11/+44Just another step in the eventual undoing of the entire American economy.
Haliburton is bad, but this is really bad. I am really fearing an economic implosion here, and it was started a long time ago. If many large companies do this, we're in even more serious trouble. - Eilarais, on 10/12/2007, -4/+34@nixonrichard
Unfortunately, Multinationals don't 'leave' the same way a smaller company does, they don't have enough nationality (hence the term). I would have no problem with this if their U.S. operations were dismantled first, but allowing Halliburton to move out with their resources intact is a serious blow to the country.
In fact, this is extremely serious. America has invested heavily in these compainies because the benefits of having them are greater than the cost of the routine shaftings they conduct (at least, from the government's point of view). If these companies feel they no longer need the U.S., these befefits evaporate.
It should also be noted that if we had a real government, they would be absolutely livid over this. - chicagobiker, on 10/12/2007, -10/+39Actually, what's even more ironic is United Arab Emirates is a Sunni state. How's that gonna look that the #1 US Military contractor is based there as we police the civil ware between the Sunnis and ***** in Iraq?
- Depthfunction, on 10/12/2007, -6/+35Traitors.
- insomniacpyro, on 10/12/2007, -4/+31At least they are preparing and moving to a place that's hot as hell.
- johnpaul191, on 10/12/2007, -4/+30their money? more like the US taxpayer's money!
- denied, on 10/12/2007, -9/+34its 'cause Dubai has a better football team.
- geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+29Halliburton, despite sucking down billions from the US government, is a multinational corporation whose only allegiance is the all mighty dollar, this move makes its intentions clearer. They will sell you tanks while selling the enemy anti-tank missiles. Meanwhile they finance PR campaigns to make sure you know that it is the patriotic duty of all Americans to support Halliburton at all costs. It's no coincidence this came out on a Sunday. All the interesting stuff that politicians/corps don't want you to know comes out on weekends.
- mikelieman, on 10/12/2007, -9/+32I believe it is time to cancel each and every Haliburton contract the Taxpayers are funding.
We CANNOT rely of FOREIGN COMPANIES to protect America's interests. - toefinder, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25It's time for a complete purge of our federal government from top to bottom. Life sentences without parole for traitors in all three branches of government. Seizing of assets of all the players and the dismantling of both political parties is in order.
- spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20That's 'Shiite', ***** means something quite different...
- oldsk00l, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24scum sucking ***** is more like it...
- holzp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Nothing like a Sunday business announcement to let you know that everything is legit.
- cepher, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21Pah. Halliburton, albeit a somewhat morally disfunctional company, was a huge and powerful influence on Houston, and helped its economy in many ways. Without it here, we're losing money and the UAE gets it.
- sclifford, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Perhaps it's time to break out civil asset forfeiture laws against Halliburton/KBR, its current and former corporate officers. It's used every day in the US against folks not even accused of a crime. Why not Halliburton/KBR? Plow that money into the national debt.
- Ratteler, on 10/12/2007, -9/+24It's more like "How dare they leave . . . we need Justice!!!!!"
- Pyloff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Eminently diggable. Many reasons.
- Katarn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15It's the capitalist "thank you".
- rootfiend, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15So this is how they repay our country? To think our Vice President was CEO...
- skinrock, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Despite what you may think, I'm sure majority of digg users are very familiar with what's going on in the world. I don't know what it is, it's like they all go to this mass news website.
- Humptydank, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14It's not that simple. Dubai has made incredible investments into developing their business and tourism infrastructures and they deserve a hats-off for doing so. They're likely to be one of the few Gulf states to survive the eventual depletion of the oil supply.
And when that happens they'd better have put some decent dollars into national defense too, because when they have a strong economy and their neighbors are facing a return to a nomadic lifestyle, national sovereignty may be, shall we say, devalued. Plus, they'll probably also find that when they and their neighbors don't have any more oil all they're going to get from calls to the US is an answering machine.
But then again, Halliburton is a major defense services contractor with very deep pockets, so it's more likely that Dubai has thought of this scenario and is simply expressing its faith in the private sector to provide the resources they need for defense over cooperating with fickle American administrations. I can't say that were I them I'd do it any other way. - krakkinem, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17Good. Get out of my state, you sick *****.
- Babykitkat, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Cheney's Halliburton stock options rose 3,281% last year, senator finds
http://rawstory.com/news/2005/Cheneys_stock_options_rose_3281_last_1011.html
As you can see he is not for the USA
http://www.infowars.com/cartoons_9.htm#hole - johnpaul191, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14i have heard that Haliburton is in a potential financial mess down the road. back when Cheney was still there he bought out a buddies company, and with that purchase Haliburton absorbed a company that is the target of asbestos lawsuits.
a year or two ago Bush was spending a lot of time saying we needed to help the economy by stemming lawsuits he referred to excessive. he specifically mentioned the "unfair settlements" against companies that were being sued for exposing people to asbestos. i wonder if moving will also somehow throw some muck on those lawsuits? - e68895f, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13ou, so patriotic of them.....
- kevintmckay, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13It really sucks to just have to stand by while they ***** us in the ass. Rome is falling...
- peregrine, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16Dubai is genius!
Lets provide a tax free area of land and get all these expensive corporations to come here......profit!
Then once they are stabalized and stuck here with nowhere to go TAX THEM TO HELL!!!
Dubai I have much to learn. - fuzzmeister, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12oldsk00l,
Aren't you thinking of Saudi Arabia? - SkyGarden, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Again proving that a Multinational Corporation (MNC) really doesn't give a ***** about any country or any people that don't provide them with big $$$$ signs. The nature of halliburton is NOT the kind that should be holding a vice president seat in our country. This should also prove that american hegemony has measures to extract and rape the arab economies of their resources in Bush's continued war for gun-point globalism, under the cover that its a war on terror.
This move by Halliburton totally reeks of globalization's malevolent intent toward the arab nations that haven't already accepted it. I do hope americans won't be plunged back into sleep in the fantasy world of islam vs. freedom . obviously Halliburton has invested in the Bush regime's hegemonic plan. - hplasm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Isn't it "war on Error" the T is silent, like the "news" agencies
- UnstableMind, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I use to hit cnn everyday for headlines, thinking it was one of the best sources for news, but now I hit digg and slashdot. I know mostly tech articles, but still the important stuff gets through, ie, not Britney Spears and Anna Nicole "GoldDigger" Smith *****.
I already posted my thoughts on this *****, but, I guess I could say something else about the matter. ***** Traitor/TaxPayer Funded Scum Bitches - Axfire, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Maybe they'll take Cheney with them.
- sarahes, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9more reason for me to move to an island somewhere far away. this country is making me sick.
- whoaohh, on 10/12/2007, -14/+20Dubai is more of an international city than a Sunni city
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Cheney has a long term plan for mid-east's oil. What do you think is all the Iran-is-after-nukes-and-kills-our-soldiers about? It's easier to manage the operations from there.
