HAI GUYS LETS VOTE NO TAXES!! ITS GONNA BE AWESOME!!! - avataros, on 07/02/2009, -3/+46A state of emergency? Looks like the Governator will be coming out, guns ablazin', yelling "Get to da choppa!"

REGULATE IT
TAX IT - Zomgondo, on 07/02/2009, -6/+31The real WTF in this state is that we need a 2/3rds vote to pass a ***** budget, which allows the approximately 33% of legislators who are asshats to hold the state hostage EVERY. SINGLE. YEAR.
Seriously - our roads suck. Our schools suck. Every government agency we have in this state sucks. Every other state in the goddamn Union beats us at just about everything. Why? Because we have to get a 2/3rds vote to pass a budget, and there's always a minority of ***** who either A. can't stand the idea of cutting spending on things that don't work, or B. can't stand the idea that we might have to actually raise taxes to pay for the things we want. So we end up with an absolutely retarded budget that every year makes sure our tax dollars are being spent less and less efficiently because the 33% of idiots on BOTH SIDES control the budget and there's no way to make them shut the ***** up and go away.
I'm not blaming a particular party, but this is out of control. We've missed the budget deadline and had to issue IOU's EVERY SINGLE GODDAMN YEAR I CAN REMEMBER. Allowing a minority coalition to hold an entire state hostage is no way to run a ***** government. - SirBruce, on 07/02/2009, -1/+22Part of the reason we got rid of Gray Davis was a budget pinch he got us into. But the main issue is the legislature, which requires a supermajority to pass budgets. Since both Democrats and Republicans refuse to budge much, once the dot.com bubble burst in 2000 the state has been spiraling down in deficits; the Democrats won't cut enough spending to match today's lower revenues and the Republicans won't raise taxes to match the old level of spending.
Each year they did some last-minute hocus pocus to hide the problem and kicked the hard decisions down the road to the next legislature to deal with. Now we're at the end of our rope and we're pretty much *****. The Governor isn't at fault at all; he's made many concessions and worked very hard to get deals done. But to make major structural changes required ballot measures, and when the ballot measures came up, people wouldn't vote for them because they were too stupid to realize that a 10% cut now is better than taking a 20% cut later. So now it's later and we're all in deep trouble. The state is now paying people in IOUs, and only one bank is cashing the IOUs and only until July. After that, the state government will collapse and the federal government will have to come in and bail us out. - Photokon, on 07/02/2009, -0/+20California:
2004/2005 Budget: $105,377,333,979
2008/2009 Budget: $144,489,190,000
That's an 8.2% increase per year. Boy, that doesn't sound logical. Inflation is less than HALF of that.
Enough said. - stoanhart, on 07/02/2009, -1/+19Sorry to sound harsh, but ***** your mom. How can you pay people if you have no money? Reality bites.
- cuoops, on 07/02/2009, -2/+20HI BILLY MAYS HERE....IS YOUR STATE IN DEBT, BROKE?...WELL I HAVE...oh forget it.
- the2989, on 07/02/2009, -13/+30Legalize weed. It won't fix the problem all together, but...
...it will:
Provide new jobs in agriculture, individual shops, and research facilities
Provide a great new tax source
Increase tourism (and the money that tourism brings in)
Decrease law enforcement costs
Decrease money being spent on holding prisoners
(along with all sorts of positive social benefits)
There aren't any logical reasons to not legalize it. Try to find one if you disagree, we'll just convince you otherwise. - Y0tsuya, on 07/02/2009, -3/+18California's plight reflects that of the average American's. It can't balance its budget even when times are good, borrows money to plug deficits. It doesn't save money for a rainy day but instead projects tax revenue increases because supposedly things will forever get better year after year in the greatest bull market in history.
The downsizing will be painful, but necessary. Californians already shoulder one of the heaviest tax burdens in the country, with both income tax and sales tax each around 10%. Many people suggest repealing prop 13. Well guess what, that'll affect mostly long-term residents (read seniors) living on fixed income. The instant tripling and quadrupling of property taxes will drive them to bankruptcy.
California needs to scale back entitlement programs, reduce salaries of state workers (already among the highest-paid in the country), and send a big F**K Y*U to the Feds and tell them they can take their demand for prison health improvements and shove it up their ass.
Those protesting state workers need to get a clue. A decade-long deflation scenario is in play and there's no way the state can continue paying their high salary and benefits expenses with decreasing tax revenue. - Pinkshisno, on 07/02/2009, -2/+17Democrats have a lot to be blamed for as well. The legislature just sucks.
- thegamingguy, on 07/02/2009, -0/+14Updated URL: http://www.rttnews.com/ArticleView.aspx?Id=994831
- SirBruce, on 07/02/2009, -0/+14Sorry, UC budgets are getting cut. So is K-12.
- Xaevier, on 07/02/2009, -7/+21Gee what do you know, years of crazy pet projects have backfired and caused the state to go into massive debt. They could really stand to learn a lesson from the Fed/Congress.
- Presbyterian, on 07/02/2009, -0/+12Sheer ignorance.California's problems are very systemic and there is plenty of blame to go around.
- spookyttws, on 07/02/2009, -0/+12The URL leads to a story about Sweden.
- alamedaman, on 07/02/2009, -0/+11we've been in an emergency since loooooooooooong before this year.
- Bartboy919, on 07/02/2009, -6/+16actually it is.
REPEAL PROP 13!! - curtisag, on 07/02/2009, -5/+15The people voted down any new tax increases already. What other alternative is there? The budget must be cut.
Maybe if the people in California weren't such hippies there wouldn't be so many pussies who refuse to cut a program in state congress. I think Arnold calls them "girlie men", I agree. - BurgGuy, on 07/02/2009, -0/+9For those people that believe that Ca. problem is too little taxes. Just last Feb. the Gov. signed into law $12.8 Billion in NEW tax increases.
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2 ...
It was the largest increase in Ca. history. Just 4 months later and we're back to MORE demands for more tax increases from our legislators, as their spending continues to increase and revenues fall. Assembly Speaker Bass has made comments that living within one's means is a useless idea. We're headed for financial doom with these clowns. - Richandler, on 07/02/2009, -0/+9The UC budgets are astronomical. It costs twice as much to go to a UC as it does a CSU. But I'll tell you right now the BA in any subject will not hold more prestige from one university than the other. If teachers leave, let them. Where are they going to go?
- inactive, on 07/02/2009, -4/+13I wonder if fighting expensive court battles to try and close down marijuana dispensaries is a good use of money.
- faskippy, on 07/02/2009, -0/+8Another piece of legislation from California:
Just passed...by the year 2012, all vehicles in California must have SOME reflective glass. The law was designed to keep the occupants cooler. Of course, they haven't figured out yet just how many accidents will be caused by drivers being blinded by others' reflecting the sun into their eyes. A LAW, people, to make the occupants cooler. A LAW! I said a ***** LAW! - Barackalypse, on 07/02/2009, -0/+8Nice bit of hysteria there, except postal workers aren't employed by the State of California, nor are most of the cops (most work for municipalities) or teachers (most work for municipal school districts).
- faskippy, on 07/02/2009, -0/+8Well, well. He goes on TV saying they are in a state of emergency because they are "spending more money than they have". (I wonder how long till the Federal govt. will be crying the same song)? They are going to start paying workers with IOU's, cutting services, etc., yet they have enough money to pay rent, food stamps and medical for how many millions of illegal invaders???
Way to go, California. Oh, and they are just the worst. New Jersey is running a close second, and 44 others right behind them are feeling the same effects of not being able to add two and ***** two. - Mike17102, on 07/02/2009, -3/+11That will not even come close to solving their budget gap. But dont let that stop you from pretending it will. Its clear from your digging history that you love propaganda, so you might as well spread your own.
CA has a spending problem, not an income problem. This is what happens when you let a bunch of bleeding heart brainless liberals vote in a bunch of entitlement programs (some even for illegal aliens) and no tax increases to go with the new programs. - jeffbw, on 07/02/2009, -1/+9Not exactly; if I remember correctly it'll raise about 1.5 billion a year. Still a long way from solving our problems.
- endisnighe, on 07/02/2009, -2/+10No you don't. I ***** left, because you ***** morons keep falling for REPUB THIS DEM THAT and they both keep following the same policies. ***** the illegals, gov shutting off water to farmers, rampant regulation of all industries, taxes already higher than most other states, firefighters setting forest fires to keep their departments IN THE MONEY, most school systems so blatantly fat that they put out idiots that cannnot find Cali on a national map, crime, police corruption, government officials so idiotic they think they can tax out of an economic slump(maybe they could if they printed 11 trillion dollars like the FED-oh thats just going to destroy us-nevermind that logic), PELOSI the wicked, BOXER the thief, Insurance companies writing laws, other items too numerous to mention and all the ***** morons like you that think government should redistribute wealth from the ones that do to the ones that do nothing.
- curtisag, on 07/02/2009, -3/+11@Bartboy919
Wow, that's pathetic. You're bankrupt and you vote down spending caps? The longer people stick their heads in the sand on this the worse it will get. Are you waiting for Obama to print some more money for you or what? What's the endgame here? What happens next year when state tax income is just as bad or worse? - Barackalypse, on 07/02/2009, -5/+12I know, lets continue to spend MORE money year after year, that will fix our budget problems for sure!
- PhAndrew, on 07/02/2009, -1/+8At least your mom still has a job considering my school just laid off a chunk of the teachers.
- curtisag, on 07/02/2009, -9/+16I say let the state shut down until the congress agrees to the necessary budget cuts. It's time for California to take their medicine.
- bbjohnnyt, on 07/02/2009, -1/+8Big government liberalism at work. Enough said.
- Richandler, on 07/02/2009, -1/+8Raising taxes would not improve the situation, it might get the state of debt, but the the livelihood of Californians goes down, because all that money is just pay for crap we already have.
- poonjob, on 07/02/2009, -6/+12thing is i do have a clue.. if you would like to debate this further you will get your ***** wrecked
- Suricou, on 07/02/2009, -2/+8Republicans blame democrats. Democrats blame republicans. I blame them both - but mostly I blame a legislative system that needs a supermajority to pass a simple budget bill, and still has to rely on ballot initiatives for a lot of it. And I blame the people of California, for consistantly voting in those ballots to get more money for themselves and avoid any tax raises, always expecting the politicians will magically make the books balance somehow.
- kingmanic, on 07/02/2009, -0/+6Wasn't his platform on budget reform and how he isn't getting it because of 'special interest groups'.
- eifersucht12a, on 07/02/2009, -0/+6No *****.
/Southern California public high school student. - curtisag, on 07/02/2009, -1/+7@ceredron
Cut pensions, cut police, cut bureaucrats, cut prisons, release non-violent prisoners, legalize weed and tax it. I know it can be done because I did it on another site that lets you manipulate the state budget. I admit I had to cut quite a bit to create a surplus, but it was possible and the world would not come to an end. How about we just go back to the budget of 2003. That would be a good start at the very least. The alternative of doing nothing is going to be far worse. But some have to learn lessons the hard way. - poonjob, on 07/02/2009, -10/+16aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand that's what socialism and going overboard on "going green" does.
- BloodWenis, on 07/02/2009, -0/+6Head to the California Legislative Analyst's Site and you can research that it's up over 100% for the past 10 years.
- faskippy, on 07/02/2009, -0/+5What??? This is the state of Pelosi, Boxer and all of the other incompetent democrat dingleberries, especially ones that like to give their husbands big corporate deals while sitting on committees that are formed to administer the "bailout". Remember???
- bbjohnnyt, on 07/02/2009, -3/+8I'm a Californian who's closely observed its politics since the 70s. California was once the most prosperous and most educated state. Then it started it's grand 20 year experiment in liberalism and economy-killing environmental regulations, which leads us to where we are today. As California goes, so does the rest of the nation, now that it's on the same course towards financial ruin.
- endisnighe, on 07/02/2009, -3/+8Repub this dem that. How does it feel to be one of the sheeple. Drink much flouridated kool aid. I wonder if Idiocracy was based on the gullibility of sheeple to fall for anything that comes out of politians mouths.
- SirBruce, on 07/02/2009, -1/+6It's you "reapeal prop 13" idiots that helped get us into this mess. The Democrats have kicked the can down the road every year and didn't deal with the budget shortfall when it was much smaller because they hoped one day they could repeal prop 13. Well guess what, the people aren't voting for it, so now they have to cut and it's going to be worse because they listened to people like you for years.
- ghatid, on 07/02/2009, -0/+5I wonder what percentage of the money California uses is actually a good use of money.
- FlyingCaveman, on 07/02/2009, -1/+6I declare that tie a fashion emergency.
- AlaskaLoneWolf, on 07/02/2009, -1/+6Is it just me, or does anyone else see a movie deal before this thing is over?
