- ieee, on 01/01/2009, -5/+433About time somebody did this.
- tdominey, on 01/01/2009, -5/+299Thanks Google. Move on folks.
- inactive, on 01/02/2009, -9/+184Whatever. I'm still using Netscape Navigator 4.
- Aristocrat, on 01/01/2009, -3/+135Thank you Google!
- inactive, on 01/02/2009, -2/+83CSS HELL Finally Freezes
- sxtxixtxcxh, on 01/02/2009, -4/+82Well then... to all the people who said "As if Google would stop supporting IE6" in response to my IE Death March ( http://iedeathmarch.org ) I say, "HA!"
I mean, sure it's not an across-the-board thing quite yet, but seriously, most of the responses I got (mostly in email) were doubting a Big Company like Google would stop developing for IE6 until maybe early 2010. - TheBlueVulcan, on 01/02/2009, -4/+76God dammit, this article's from last year!
- XxbladesfirexX, on 01/02/2009, -12/+73People still use IE6?
Huh... learn something new every day... - ieee, on 01/02/2009, -3/+59For me, this isn't about IE in general. IE 6 is a large and costly inconvenience for both web application and web site developers. IE 6 doesn't work in exactly the same way as IE7 & IE8. A person doing web development not only has to make sure that an application or site works in the Mozilla based browsers and IE, but that it works in multiple versions of IE. IE 6 is typically the browser that breaks when new code is developed when that code works in all of the other browsers. Even other versions of IE. Organizations and people are hanging onto IE 6. It is past time for those with muscle to begin nudging people away from IE 6
- DraganDragan, on 01/02/2009, -3/+57One must show respect to IE6.
If it wasn't such a pain in the ass we wouldn't have the browsers of today.
RIP IE6. - jaikob, on 01/02/2009, -3/+46About god damn time. I'm sick of backporting everything I do.
- inactive, on 01/02/2009, -1/+40Even my company still uses IE6 as a default.
Though, our reason is that we run so many legacy applications, the type that were made specifically for our industry, that IE7 is not easy to implement, and Firefox cannot replace it because of Active X.
As much as I hate it, IE6 is still around for a reason. - niczar, on 01/02/2009, -0/+38IE6 is a steaming pile of crap. IE7 is a regular pile of crap.
Seriously. - HookmasterCH47, on 01/02/2009, -7/+44That's because people that go to Ohio State are retarted.
- Cowicide, on 01/02/2009, -4/+39Any company that still has its ppl running IE6 is a company that should fire its Technology Director. It's almost as bad as running AOL.
- ironclyde, on 01/02/2009, -1/+30Yeah... When you're putting out web pages for clients, you find out quick how many people are still using IE6 :) "Why doesn't this look right on my machine?" -- the statement that causes a collective forehead slap in my department.
We pretty much have stopped doing special CSS for IE6 unless people complain. It is actually kind of funny how people are a little ashamed of still having IE6 when they finally tell you why things aren't working :). - solmakou, on 01/02/2009, -2/+29I have to use AOL how else would I get on the internet?
- itcoll, on 01/02/2009, -3/+28i dont use browser at all
- nonymous666, on 01/02/2009, -0/+24IE6 is still extremely popular in the corporate world. Because it's the browser that comes with WinXP.
The web apps my company provides specifically support IE6 (and unofficially support IE7, too, but no guarantees), and do not support Firefox, etc. at all.
There's no reason for us to 'bother' with Firefox since none of our customers have any desire for it.
IE7, and upcoming IE8, etc. have no chance of being supported since nobody uses Vista and I don't even expect Windows 7 to take off in the corporate world; too many companies are going to hold onto WinXP for a very long haul.
It's all very sad and pathetic. - Dylson, on 01/02/2009, -7/+29If Google tells you to do it YOU BETTER ***** DO IT!
- umbrellainabin, on 01/02/2009, -4/+25www.getfirefox.com
- tumbleweed05, on 01/02/2009, -1/+21My job annoys me in 1 way: I can't use any modern web browser. I need tabs.
- Meep3D, on 01/02/2009, -2/+21Shush. IE7 is miles better than IE6
- boojoy, on 01/02/2009, -2/+21Yes! One step closer to the day when IE 6 is a dead browser and officially gone forever. I'm tired of having png support in every browser but one....
- motters, on 01/02/2009, -0/+19IE6 was a complete and utter security disaster, and CSS quagmire. It caused me to start using Firefox, and I have never switched back.
- niczar, on 01/02/2009, -1/+20@seth: interesting. So instead they make you use a vulnerable browser, that is likely to let malware take hold ... that's brilliant.
- inactive, on 01/02/2009, -0/+18Real geeks telnet to port 80.
- oneoverzero, on 01/02/2009, -2/+20Safari is standards compliant.
Hell, the latest versions of WebKit beat Firefox. - inactive, on 01/02/2009, -1/+18Real men use Mosaic :)
- masterkenobi, on 01/02/2009, -0/+16Speaking as a web developer, I just have to say that it's about bloody time!
- theaceoffire, on 01/02/2009, -1/+17Can you run exe's off a thumb stick?
You might be able to use portable firefox... - scottstevenson, on 01/02/2009, -0/+15It's not unusual for popular sites to see 20-25% of their traffic from IE6. At this point, they will probably only upgrade when they get a new computer or their favorite sites stop working in IE6 (thereby causing them to buy a new computer):
http://digg.com/tech_news/Why_the_hell_does_IE6_st ... - spect3r, on 01/02/2009, -0/+15exactly. the internet is for loosers, I'm busy surfing the ultranet with my thoughts.
- MWeather, on 01/02/2009, -0/+15Sounds like an issue the website will have to deal with. My employer mandates Firefox, and it hasn't been a problem for anything work related.
- inactive, on 01/02/2009, -3/+18That's because no one uses it.
- m3mn0n, on 01/02/2009, -1/+15I wish I could. My company uses IE 5 still on our thin clients. :-(
- inactive, on 01/02/2009, -4/+18...for Firefox 3...
- ieee, on 01/02/2009, -0/+14@Magnes, that is true, but I would still rather have only 2 versions of IE to code for instead of 3.
- SSUK, on 01/02/2009, -0/+13You'd be surprised how many PCs I see running Windows 95 in offices...
- noboot, on 01/02/2009, -1/+14Ohio State is retarted and forces you to use IE6 because they refuse to support IE7.
- netneutrality, on 01/02/2009, -1/+14Those remaining few stuck on Windows 98 won't have much choice, since it won't run IE7, Firefox 3 or Chrome. It will run Firefox 2, but if the machine runs Windows 98 it probably can't run Firefox 2 at anything more than agonizing speeds (been there, done that (main computer broke for a while)), and IE6 in comparison, is significantly lighter and an order of magnitude faster on those machines.
- LowRentDiggs, on 01/02/2009, -3/+15That's why you shouldn't depend on apps that require Active X.
- Sethbacca, on 01/02/2009, -0/+12I would totally do that..... if my work didn't disable USB access. We deal with financial data and they turned off our USB ports to eliminate the chance of someone absconding with our clients data (I work in the financial services industry, 401k servicing, so you can imagine the data that we have access to)
- nonymous666, on 01/02/2009, -0/+11Most large corporations only allow and/or support IE6 since it's the browser that comes with WinXP. They don't want to be bothered with rolling out IE7 or Firefox, etc. to thousands of different computers in their organization, then having to 'teach' their thousands of users about those new fangled 'tabs', etc. As far as they're concerned, IE6 is 'good enough'.
- zwaldowski, on 01/02/2009, -0/+11Easy fix: Don't run (badly pirated XP)/(old-as-***** Win 2K).
- Issius, on 01/02/2009, -0/+11That's because most home users think that IE is the internet... they have no concept of a "browser" and many are proud of being uneducated about the tools they use everyday. (Anyone who works in electronics retail can testify to this)
- LoneWolf01, on 01/02/2009, -0/+11Try using Portable Firefox, installs on a USB thumb drive and works without having to install anything on a work computer.
- sloppychris, on 01/02/2009, -0/+11I assume by "weeks" they mean "weekends".
- inactive, on 01/02/2009, -1/+11Wow you're passionate about operating systems.
