- manfrin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I don't know about this. Microsoft, in this arena, is putting on some incredibly strong competition. They had their Local Live search out before Google's Local search, and now Live has a near 'streets eye view' for their map/directions service, which is pretty helpful.
Either way, though, we all win. - casbeebc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8New features are awesome, but it is all about people getting to use them. Almost all of the non-tech people I know still use mapquest :-( :-(
- logicnazi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think the parent was supposed to be funny.

Any journalist that writes about the classified ad market without mentioning Craigslist should have their head examined. Let me make a blanket statement on business:
If you want a long term successful business, YOU MUST ADD VALUE TO THE PRODUCT OR SERVICE THAT YOU ARE OFFERING. Additionally, if the product or service can exist without that added value, the business will always be reduced to eliminate the added value.
Taking some content that you did not create (classifieds), and putting it through the web 2.0 business model, does not add value. Searching, abstracting, hosting images, mash-ups to other data, are all of minimal value and can be offered by just about any not for profit individual with some web skills.
Craigslist knows this, and doesn't spend alot of time or money dong this. Their model is, 'Here is the plain jane data, nicely categorized and policed by other people like you... Have fun'. That does not take a Mountain View server facility with dozens of fibers in and out. Therefore, classifieds will never be a $31 billion business.
Classifieds boiled down to two individuals communicating a simple message, and that is what the Internet is good at. Sorry big venture caps, no money to be made there, move along. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Somehow I think they WOULD mind it a bit if a company that they own jst 5% of started taking away revenue from a company that they own 100% of.
- vemerge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Google has a 5% stake in AOL. So I'm sure they won't mind too much if AOL does something here. I still don't see it happening though.
- skored, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Interesting but she certainly convinced. The most compelling part of the article to me was:
"Rubinstein even held up an Intuit QuickBooks “enhanced with Google“ software box to illustrate the Google local product range. "
That is some pretty powerful co-branding... - KevinWhite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@skored
i agree with you, i gave microsoft directions to one of my friends without fully reading them (I just made sure it took the correct streets) and she was 15 minutes late because she had to guess which direction to go on the highway. I checked the printout and it never specified north or south. I am in Canada btw. - skored, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You know I tried to use Live for directions recently (I usually use google or yahoo) and they look great and all BUT they didn't specify little things like whether the you should take NORTH or SOUTH of a highway and then again with EAST or WEST of a freeway. Hmmmm....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't want to point out the obvious, but you really should have seen the forecasts for internet advertising for the years 2001-2005 that were made in 1999! Through the roof!
So, people may want to take these forecasts with a grain of salt. - stevejanes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow! That is real big! It's amazing how these markets can grow so fast!
- km00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope that applies to Quicken too... the search feature in there is terribly cumbersome and surprisingly limited.
- sputnike, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"Lycos and AOL will probably be the biggest to benefit. They should come on strong and squash Google."
Ok firstly, last time I checked AOL is powered by Google (or Enhanced in their words) as for Lycos, seriously I can't remember the last time I used it... long time ago, but the point is, Google really does have the market. Yes competition from Yahoo! and Microsoft Live is great and it's getting there.
The QuickBooks and Google co-branding would be very powerful indeed. I use Quickbooks for my business and it would be great to see what this software is going to be like. - marnaq, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I have used the google several times, actually.
- Dopamini, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Lycos and AOL will probably be the biggest to benefit. They should come on strong and squash Google.
- oxyrubber, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3Well - after she get's the "KFed" tattoo laser-removed...
- crilen007, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2Would have to ask Hanes that one.
- Pattyo13, on 05/14/2009, -14/+2i thought that was the going rate to rent space on britney's crotch for advertising
