- dangerousdan, on 10/29/2007, -1/+20Domain purchasers aren't interested in hot girls as much as an interface where they can buy what they want quickly and securely. GoDaddy's labyrinth of upsells is frustrating and an insult to their customers' intelligence.
- fenixconnektion, on 10/22/2007, -4/+21HEAD ON! APPLY DIRECTLY TO THE FOREHEAD! HEAD ON! APPLY DIRECTLY TO THE FOREHEAD! HEAD ON! APPLY DIRECTLY TO THE FOREHEAD! HEAD ON! APPLY DIRECTLY TO THE FOREHEAD!
- dharmesh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14What I'd like to know is when they sat around in their web design meetings, did they actually arrive at consensus that this was a smart/profitable thing to do? Or, did they suffer the "hey if 21 offers are good, 22 must be better" and slowly get to where they are now?
- YoavShapira, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15It would be funny, only it's sad ;(
- eaham, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I have only bought one domain, but I remember feeling like I just bought a car, and now you were selling me rustproofing, floor mats, an alarm, an extended warranty.... etc. They should experiment with havign a button that says "pay $5 more and skip to our VIP express checkout". I bet lots of people would do that.
- radicaldementia, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Not to mention that their website in general is an overwhelming labyrinth of managers and menus. Godaddy forgot the golden rule of KISS.
- bullhead2007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I used to work for GoDaddy so I will share a little information that I think wont get me in trouble.
The website is actually intentionally designed to be as confusing as possible. The check out process is designed to confuse people into buying extra stuff they probably don't need, or confused enough to call "Support" which is actually just going to try to sell them whatever they can.
Now working in support we do have to offer stuff but we also have to help. Most of my calls were due to people being confused with the interface. It's intended to generate sales calls. - trotyl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7tedious checkout process...it's about as enjoyable as pressing through a bunch of menus to get to a real-live customer service rep.
- MoneyShot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Sleep all day and party all night?
- amintaheri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This is one of the main reasons I left GoDaddy - it was too hard to do anything and navigate the UI for new customers, and then when you found what you wanted to do you were barraged by ads to buy stuff.
Either way, 22 seems like way too many things.... - KingLeo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yes it is annoying, but it works. The upsell is likely a bigger income stream for the company than the domain names themselves.
- thetanbark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I know someone who registered a domain with them the other day, and they CALLED HIM 2 days later to try and upsell him on their identity protection after refusing it on sign up. RUDE!
Let's not forget they by-default set you up for 2 years domain registration. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm sure it does. And because they offer domains for cheap, smart people will still tolerate it.
- zendegany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's checkout designed by a sales or marketing rep and not a technical person.
- bamafun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You can also click the NO Take me straight to checkout lol
- vanlawrence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I hope GODADDY gets wind of this. Perhaps it will cause them to rethink their processes
- slackerxpc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Go daddy is my registrar of choice. good prices, easy to manage multiple domains, good support...
- decker12, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I was annoyed by all the steps and hard sells as well, but the domain and hosting price was right so I keep using them. Unfortunately so many of their things are ala carte, so they end up nickle and diming you quite a bit. Want 10 extra email aliases? $1. Want a bit more storage? $1. Want more of this and that and those things that you thought would be included? $2.
That all being said, I've had nothing but great success with customer service and the hosting is easy to use and reliable once you get the hang of it. - AriaStar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I've been using GoDaddy for years and want to be able to defend them, really, I do, but can't. Their layout is a pain in the ass and the complete opposite of intuitive. It's confusing as hell, and only seems to get worse with time. Not to mention that they shake things up every other month by rearranging everything.
Take something that already makes little or no sense and add to the confusion by changing it all around before it starts to make sense. Yeah, great idea. - amyfi, on 10/13/2007, -0/+3I can't stop laughing at this
- spazerture, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Maybe it works on the stupid masses...
- deviantlinux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Interesting, I just bought a domain just a few days ago. I noticed this, there were tons of ads after _every_ page and it is a bit annoying. I probably won't buy from them again because of this. Too many offers.
- i208khonsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3But, but, but statistics show that this kind of marketing campaign raises profits .016342%!
- StopTheLie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3...and this is why I have hundreds of names at one of their competitors. I ONLY use "GoDaddy" to register names when (very rarely) my main registrar is down.
- apathysucks, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Yeah, but the button looks like another ad - I just recently started doing a website for a professor, and we used GoDaddy for the domain hosting - big mistake. I will not be using it for my own website.
- Bdog2g2, on 10/14/2007, -2/+5Just a tip: Here at Digg, you will always get dugg down if your sole response is to explain to a person how digg works.
First rule of digg, don't talk about digg. - them3nace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Um...They actually already have that.....and its free.
- russellnation, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2yeah i really hate when a noob friend of mine buys a domain and has to ask me 50 questions just to complete the sale. their site sux, and is very un user friendly
- Unclickable, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I am not going to brag about the nightmare I had with them when I decided to use their VPS hosting
- insomnious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It isn't GoDaddy's fault. Once Amazon registered the OneClick process 2-15 were quickly taken. GoDaddy had no choice but to use 16 clicks or they would be committing patent infringement. Don't worry though the 17 click process was registered under creative commons so the number won't grow forever.
- carefreeliving, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Brilliant! They just have an annual "VIP Subscription" or something which basically lets you not see all the inane upsell offers. There are some customers that I'm sure don't buy domains/services often enough to mind -- but the ones that do (and they're likely the ones spending the most money with GoDaddy) do mind.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2But but but... they sponsor Diggnation. Kevin Rose Endorses them ,they must be awesome.
/sarcasm - cerealman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Note that the article includes steps like filling in a certain input field or clicking a submit button. The article is rather misleading.
- Flashman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Get your piece of the internet at GoDaddy.com, home of the famous 16-step checkout process. Use the code CONFUSING3 if you make it to the checkout for a full 33 cents off any purchase of $50 or more."
- mbthompson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've used GoDaddy as my registrar (I think I have 3 domains, I can't remember to be honest), but seriously, the checkout process is a living nightmare. You have to double check just to make sure you didn't miss unchecking a box lest your firstborn be cursed with explosive diarrhea on the third day of every 5th leap year. Knock it off!
- sd2001, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1GoDaddy's checkout process and constant marketing calls have made me abandon them. A courtesy call once a month would be alright, but I was getting calls twice a week at times. Re-*****-ulous!
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 10/14/2007, -0/+1You can't say for certain what kind of person chose their layout. It all comes down to the type of strategy GoDaddy chose to go with.
I would agree a marketing person would aught to think up the best presentation. But you just can't say for certain. - MacSuxWindozSux, on 10/14/2007, -0/+1Up-sells are everywhere these days. Go buy anything from a car to a burger. Even that shelf of crap next to the cashier in a grocery store is an up-sell.
- najdorf, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I tried twice to get a domain from godaddy after hearing they were good. I just could not get over a certain point before the overload of stuff caused my brain to shut down temporarily and give up in frustration. Ultimately I still use Dreamhost as registrar despite having moved hosting away from them, with $10/year you also get private registration and their web panel is nice and friendly.
- TWiThead, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This ridiculous process is what led me to leave GoDaddy's site and stick with my usual domain registrar. I'd much rather just pay the extra 50¢ (the amount that I could have saved) and be done with it, and I certainly don't want to reward these annoying tactics with my business.
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1GoDaddy can just keep going.....
- Coinspinner, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1GoDaddy sucks. I liked the look of that hot chic and those ads, and I signed a three year deal. Now I find it sucks. I get 10 MB for my mail account, sure I get 50 friggin accounts but cannot use any of the space from those for my mailbox. Their web page is designed to sell stuff, rather than help you find what you want. FTP issues, etc etc.
- popothebright, on 10/13/2007, -1/+2Use Network Solutions if you want old reliable.
And (I know this is going to sound like heresy) Yahoo! Domains has a really, really simple and clean checkout. - blackbrutha, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Too much work for a service that takes your money. I'll pass.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 10/14/2007, -0/+1Even if the top guy at GoDaddy is reading this... he isn't going to care at all.
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No no... you got it all wrong...Its "Rock & Roll All Nite... and Party Everyday!"
- findhostcoupons, on 03/21/2009, -0/+1Actually I like such domain name registration companies like Namecheap and GoDaddy! For me it is not a problem to go through GoDaddy checkout process!
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 10/14/2007, -0/+1New from Head On! Active On! Apply directly where it hurts! New from Head On! Active On! Apply directly where it hurts!
- wattersm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It has nothing to do with security, they just want to make it as inconvenient as possible to leave.
- dblbender, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1lol, i used to work for Dell what I read here really sounds familiar to me ;-)
