- BeShirtHappy, on 10/24/2008, -1/+38Personally I love yard/garage sales!
But found this interesting -FTA: "The garage-sale economy is flourishing here and in many other regions of the country, so much so that some cities have begun cracking down. With more residents trying to increase their income, the city of Weymouth, Mass., limited yard sales to just three a year per address." - AriaStar, on 10/25/2008, -1/+34And Manteca has a limit of two. Gotta love, I mean, loathe, how politicians are trying to keep people down. No one likes selling their kids' toys while they're playing with them, and to do so means there's a risk of no food in the belly. Politicians needs to butt the ***** out and let people do what they need to do to survive instead of capping how often people can sell their possessions.
- basye, on 10/24/2008, -0/+30My mother used to drag my sister and I to yard sales when we were growing up, so now I'm doing the same favor to our kids!
- jgregc, on 10/24/2008, -2/+28Personally I think people should be able to have yard sales whenever they please - it is one of the best examples of a grass roots free market that I can think of.
Unfortunately, a few others feel "threatened" when they see it happening by a neighbor, like it insults their sensibilites. Almost everybody knows someone like this, I bet. Proabably more than one.
Anyways, interesting read, thanks for sharing. - inactive, on 10/24/2008, -1/+23Seems like a pretty natural consequence of the financial disaster we're in. This is probably a good thing anyway. One man's junk is another man's treasure!
- lucy22, on 10/25/2008, -1/+22Well one man's junk is another's treasure. I love garage sales.
- AmyVernon, on 10/24/2008, -1/+21There are a lot of communties here in the NY metro area that restrict the number of sales you can have. I don't mind that, actually, because I love going saling, and hate when there are folks who are "pro" at it and are asking high (for yard sales, anyway) prices for their stuff. Still cheaper than the store, but if I'm going to pay higher prices, I'll go to the store and buy it on sale, new and clean.
- InspectorGadget, on 10/25/2008, -0/+18A tricycle to keep your toddler occupied is worth way more than $3.
- toetagger, on 10/25/2008, -1/+16It's pretty bad when people have to sell their garages.
- BeShirtHappy, on 10/24/2008, -0/+14You have a good point. Where I live there are no limits (yet), but you don't see too many "pro" or "career" yard sellers. :)
- jgregc, on 10/25/2008, -0/+12Completely agree, and nicely put.
- inactive, on 10/25/2008, -0/+12That makes 2 of us. I go for the books.
- pstroll, on 10/25/2008, -1/+13The only problem with having a garage sale is dealing with people who go to garage sales
- inactive, on 10/25/2008, -0/+8U.S. dollar TO China TO Wal-mart TO our garage TO a landfill
You can't even resell that insta-crap!
Glad you saved 2 bucks on a pair of socks though - MotoFly, on 10/25/2008, -1/+7Why would anyone even sell used socks at a garage sale? I don't care how nice they are I'm not going to buy a stranger's used socks.
- atobkindaurl, on 10/25/2008, -1/+7Does anyone else find it interesting that this article made front page, "above the fold" on NYTimes.com, as if this is news...
For low income families especially its always BEEN rough... these journalists take on the stance that the termed "economical crisis" happened over night- paralleling the stock market crash...and now we've got this impending doom and starving families spreading throughout our country... In actuality many people have been living out of their means for awhile now and many people have been struggling for awhile. This is not news. this is a fluff piece...
Either way, yard sailing and thrift store shopping are a couple of the most rudimentary ways to recycle and be "green"! so props for spreading that message. - siszam, on 10/25/2008, -0/+6Don't forget about Freecycle.org. Find free stuff or give things to those who need it.
- robthom, on 10/25/2008, -0/+5Will trade freedoms for food.
- NegativeDigg, on 10/25/2008, -0/+5"Pro" or "Career" yard sellers are ones who sell on ebay and craigslist...
- t3hmyth, on 10/25/2008, -0/+5Why is an image from Synecdoche, New York the thumbnail?
- Trekhawk, on 10/25/2008, -0/+4Fascists!
- restlessmouse, on 10/25/2008, -0/+4I wish I could triple-digg that... That's why we swore off having garage sales ever again... Thieves, insistent hagglers who don't understand NO, and just plain rude people who say rude things about my crap uhh merchandise...
I just donate or Freecycle anything we don't need anymore. A lot of it was bought at thrift stores/yard sales so we aren't out much, and I am blessed to have a good steady job and a side business. Ya gotta feel bad for people who are having yard sales because they need the money for food though. - Jerky1312, on 10/25/2008, -0/+4Well, the point of the article wasn't that people were selling their junk, so in some cases people are actually selling their treasures.
- dougbarrett, on 10/25/2008, -0/+3Sweet! Garage sales rock!
- BoneStamp, on 10/25/2008, -0/+3Rummage -->
- santiago1, on 10/25/2008, -1/+4 Dugg for mentioning the ***** Manteca in the New York times.
- Trekhawk, on 10/25/2008, -1/+4On the topic of garage sales
My Mom: Who would want to buy that crap?
Me: You wanted that crap enough at one point to pay a lot more for it. - whoreable, on 10/25/2008, -1/+4The Compton Swap Meet has been freaking gangbusters lately.
- tbredofsin, on 10/25/2008, -2/+4I read it as "Three-year-old Marita Duarte, sold her mother, Beatriz, to a stranger for $3".
- spyd3rweb, on 10/25/2008, -0/+2Its the business cycle but for people. Everyone buys all this useless ***** when things are good, then liquidates it when things are bad. The wise money master will wait till things are bad to snatch up everything and consolidate power for really cheap.
- rockxaction, on 10/25/2008, -1/+3The issue with garage sales here in Texas is all the people who come and claim ignorance of English, and regardless of the price indicated, will leave you a dollar and pat you on the head.
- Bunglish, on 10/25/2008, -1/+3All the garage sales I see are just a bunch of old clothes and junk. They were fun to have when I was younger though.
- whoreable, on 10/25/2008, -0/+2Transvestite escorts are a recession proof industry.
- Observant1, on 10/25/2008, -0/+2try telling that to the IRS or a social worker.
- Hangly, on 10/27/2008, -1/+3Woody and Buzz Lightyear are having heart attacks right now.
- DreamVsPs2, on 10/25/2008, -1/+2CRAIGSLIST TOO
- pstroll, on 10/25/2008, -0/+1I had a one couple of years ago which was advertised in the local paper on a Wed (for a Saturday sale). Well I had people knocking on the door Thurs and Fri evening asking to look through the stuff early.
Love the "Do you have any jewelry? watches?" shysters ... - hetcorp, on 10/25/2008, -0/+1I like yard sales too. I get reminders at yardsaleportal.com.
- secrity, on 10/25/2008, -0/+1If wouldn't be taxable unless you made a profit on it, and few things at a typical garage/yard sale make a profit (and then you can deduct expenses). In some areas the sale may be subject to sales or use tax.
- drex8, on 10/25/2008, -1/+2Garage Sale: Samsung HiDef 60" Plasma TV - $2400
Freebie: You get both the house and the garage with it. - AmusedToDeath, on 10/26/2008, -0/+1What's the big deal. Throw 'em in the washer and they're clean, right?
- Observant1, on 10/25/2008, -0/+1but good for the people who lose their homes
- smileydude, on 10/25/2008, -0/+1we export scrap to china
- AmusedToDeath, on 10/26/2008, -0/+1Well, unless you told the government you had a yard sale how would they ever know?
- pappyblueribs, on 10/27/2008, -0/+1This is no different than setting limits to how many used cars you can sell in a year. If I sell my cars, that's fine, but at what point does it become an actual business that should be taxed? 10 a year? 20?
- dddavid, on 10/26/2008, -1/+1That was scary.
- RIPtechtv, on 10/25/2008, -1/+1Sadly for some reason most yardsales in my area all they sell is old people things. It doesnt help that most of the citys around mine banned yard sales. Today interestingly enought I got a VCR from a nabor for $1.00.
- jihoy1, on 01/21/2009, -0/+0Those are some desperate times, as an owner of a free classified ads site http://www.jihoy.com, I notice a surge in search volume for some of the keywords such as "employment", "jobs", went up between 30% to 80% since June. People tends to browse more pages or post more for sale ads on average, everyone is trying hard to make a living.
However, if stock market is indication of economy, the worse is yet to come, good luck and take care everyone! - gkiltz, on 10/26/2008, -1/+1In any given area, the best indicator of the state of the economy is not the NUMBER of garage sales, it is the usefulness of the items sold there. When the economy is good, people replace useful things just to get a more current style or a later model, and the old one ends up at a garage sale. When the economy locally is junk, so is the merchandise at yard sales, because people don't replace things that actually work!
- surferjoemaui, on 10/26/2008, -1/+1Isn't the word 'NO' pretty much the same in most languages.
