- niradg, on 05/11/2009, -1/+48Why? The city of Detroit is not the problem with GM.
- Turkman182, on 05/11/2009, -2/+43Well, then, if that happens I guess you can flush Detroit down the tubes. I actually live in the Motor City and this would be awful. Just awful.
- Target91, on 05/12/2009, -0/+23We still got the Red Wings.
- ronintetsuro, on 05/12/2009, -0/+22I hope I'm not the only one that immediately thought in my head: "Relocate? WITH WHAT MONEY?!?!!?!?"
- electricwaffles, on 05/11/2009, -1/+23The NFL takes away the Thanksgiving game. GM takes away its HQ. Jeez, what's next, Detroit?
...No, seriously. What's next? Do you guys have anything left? - villainousT, on 05/12/2009, -0/+16I feel sorry for Michigan. I used to make jokes, but I legitimately feel bad for the folks there. I hope there are some plans to fill the already too big of a void in that economy.
- BedPost, on 05/12/2009, -0/+14Everyone here is basically ***** themselves. We're all *****, and we know it. House prices basically can't get lower - everyone is trying to leave as quick as possible. It's worse than you'd imagine - this place is going to be a ghost town in no time.
- Pake, on 05/12/2009, -3/+15Why you ask? Because they are essentially blackmailing Detroit. Most likely they want more tax breaks and want more free money (not bailout money), so by threatening to leave, Detroit will freak out and give them whatever they desire. It's a common business practice that should be dealt with, but never will be as people will think you're letting the government take too much control of businesses. For a recent example of this blackmailing practice, read this short article: http://blogs.courant.com/autoracing/2007/10/bruton ...
- Buckwyld, on 05/11/2009, -2/+10If they move, I want to predict this now. GM will move to a state with no tax burden (from what I read Mich. is at nearly 5%). Nevada, South Dakota, Washington or Wyoming will be the picks. Of course, I could be wrong and they might take a lower tax burden from some other states which can be around 1%
- tjallen, on 05/12/2009, -0/+8As everyone who lives in Michigan knows, business here is not good.
- rdoger6424, on 05/12/2009, -1/+9The health care costs in the US are.
- Leezus, on 05/12/2009, -0/+7and that Oakland booty.
- joegibes, on 05/12/2009, -0/+7And, more importantly, the big voids in the roads!
- NorrisOBE, on 05/12/2009, -0/+7Moving Derrick May & Kevin Saunderson's Techno Music to Ibiza?
Motown Music moving to Canada? - FXNGLAS, on 05/12/2009, -0/+6Let them go into bankruptcy and I hope the UAW falls flat on their face.
- jakeh0, on 05/12/2009, -1/+7Detroit is just waiting for RoboCop to be invented. Then it'll be all good.
- ldkronos, on 05/12/2009, -1/+7When they say move from Detroit, that might not mean out of Michigan. It might just mean to another location in the suburbs. Here is an article that suggest it may be a move to the GM Tech Center in the city of Warren (about 30 minutes north of Detroit).

That same article also says Senator Levin has been told by an executive that no such plans are in place. - tightsqueeze, on 05/12/2009, -3/+8Are we just going to abandon Detroit? Like, "***** it, we don't care"? Detroit basically made the United States what it is today. Sad, to see it become a skeleton.
- deema1, on 05/12/2009, -2/+7"CEO Fritz Henderson said it was more likely that GM was headed for bankruptcy by June 1"
Good thing it only took $20+ billion and a six months to realize what people like me were saying all along...not to bail them out. It would have been better to let them go bankrupt and THEN give them the $20+ billion in funding to help them on their new course, AFTER the excess and waste were excised from the company.
Are people ever going to hold politicians accountable for their misinformed, misguided, and misappropriated experiments with taxpayer dollars? Imagine if all politicians were required to invest their own personal money in every venture they proposed on behalf of the American people. Maybe then they'd exercise some fiscal restraint and responsibility instead of throwing money good money on top of bad money for something that is clearly destined to fail. - qwertydvorak, on 05/12/2009, -0/+5GM Opel was asking for a bailout from the German govt. They are possibly going to be sold or bankrupted. Opel must be in pretty bad shape also or GM wouldn't be looking to dump it to get to profitability.
The difference between the unions in the two countries is healthcare. Healthcare costs add something like $2k to the cost of a GM vehicle. - maz2331, on 05/12/2009, -2/+7Pittsburgh will take the HQ. We have quite a few major corporate HQs here, low cost of living, nice ammenities and some of the world's best hospitals.
The only downside is that our nightclubs kind of suck. - Karmashock, on 05/12/2009, -1/+6GM has got to get serious about it's bottom line or it has no business staying in business. Make a profit or dissolve. Living on tax money does nothing for the economy.
- bmcnally, on 05/12/2009, -0/+4I was lucky. I got my degree last year and was able to get a job out-of-state. What happened to Detroit is now happening to an entire state (once people got enough money to get out of Detroit, they do). The brain drain will continue.
- mksmothers, on 05/12/2009, -3/+7With the money stolen from your paycheck.
- Elranzer, on 05/12/2009, -0/+4They should move to Mexico, where the majority of their factories and plants are.
- Batfishy, on 05/12/2009, -0/+3I do too. This is just sad.
- Ymeg, on 05/12/2009, -0/+3Does know why Detroit was once the automotive city of the world?
I bet they could keep them there if they went back to that. - Ebacherville, on 05/13/2009, -0/+3BUT, But, But, I though this government baliout thing was suposed to save detroit and jobs and all that stuff... Change we can believe it!!!
The just gave craploads of money to these bastards on the preemis that this would save jobs and keep the economy going ... to big to fail..
Stupid sheeple .. governments are for coruption! - inactive, on 05/12/2009, -0/+3Where's Omni Consumer Products when you need them the most?
- Winkleman, on 05/12/2009, -0/+3How much would it cost to move from one city to another?
- Jordan117, on 05/12/2009, -2/+5I think they should, simply because the headquarters' main building looks like the capital of some evil sci-fi empire.
Seriously, just look at it:
http://www.skyscraperpicture.com/detroit05.JPG - brundlefly76, on 05/12/2009, -0/+3The absolutely worst part of propping up failing American car companies is that it makes it next to impossible for NEW American car companies to succeed.
We need NEW American car companies so badly. We need to let these old ones fail and let new ones grow out of innovation, operational efficiency, relevancy and vision. - alais, on 05/12/2009, -1/+4a lot less than the tax burden
- Praelior, on 05/12/2009, -1/+4By moving out of "Detroit" it means they leave the Ren Cen,and move to Warren or something. Big deal.
- rmxz, on 05/12/2009, -0/+2"Living on tax money does nothing for the economy."
Isn't that what both the whole stimulus package and the banking bailout are based on? - etx313, on 05/12/2009, -0/+2muahahahah!!!
- etx313, on 05/12/2009, -0/+2Good music.
- gkiltz, on 05/12/2009, -0/+2The city of Detroit is not, in and of itself, the problem. That much is true.
What is also true is that most of the states in that region have state laws that favor the unions, and the franchise holders over the company as a whole. Not to say there have not been abuses of power on both sides. There have been!!!!
But at the end of the day, sometimes a company IS like a person: Just moving to a new location, and adapting to what is already there is the best way to make a brand new start, and leave the past in the past. Perhaps GM has reached the point where it needs to start over from scratch. In Detroit there are just too many ghosts of the past to do that. They can't even bring themselves to dispose of some of those old factories.
I actually flew over Detroit as a passenger in a private plane in winter of 2007-2008. It was a sunny but cold day! You fly over many of these old factory districts in the winter, and you will only see, in miles and miles of old factories, one or two buildings out of every 20 or so had a section or two that have steam coming out the vents. Steam coming out the vents means the heat is in use, at least in that section of the building! It does not tell you if anyone is actually inside right now, let alone producing anything!
They can't even bring themselves to tear down the old Packard plant. I don't remember what Packard's last year was, but it was about 50 years ago!! The same parent company also owned Studebaker, which I DO know. They went out of business in 1965!
Packard was shut down for years of slow sales, so that plant really had not run at full production in at least a decade before that!
Let's get real: Even if someone actually wanted to put a modern factory on that same piece of land, and produce something that is saleable in the modern world, the manufacturing technology has changed enough that the old factory would not be of much use! Any new factory on that location would mean essentially pulling it down and starting over!
They would be buying the location. Why not make the location more attractive to a potential buyer by saving them the demolition and in many cases cleanup costs?
In the case of the Packard plant, for example, it is so old that, every place you see an electrical transformer, there are PCBs just waiting to leak!
There would be asbestos and lead everywhere. Most of the recycleable copper pipe has probably been looted by now!
Soooooo, why not put some of those unemployed people to work demolishing these old buildings, hauling the debris, recycling what can reasonably be recycled, and disposing of the rest. By the time the job is done, you'll have a city that is smaller, with fewer people, but can actually attract some investment, and achieve a better quality of life for those who remain!
So, is Detroit the problem? Not really, but the problems of Detroit are a big part of the problem! GM just needs a chance to start anew! Given the situation and the historical baggage, can they actually do that in Detroit? - IVillageIdiot, on 05/13/2009, -0/+2Boycott ALL government owned companies.
The Socialist ONLY win if they survive. If you buy a government manufactured vehicle, the union keeps collecting dues and handing them to the Socialist. Your taxes (“bailouts“), your loan (buying a gvt car), your income (your payments to GVT own companies) will fund an ever stronger Socialist machine, which will continue to collectivize until you are faced with ALL companies being owned by government, their goal.
--We must strangle this infant in it's crib - sickswaystop, on 05/12/2009, -0/+2Yeah big deal in real estate that nobody will want.
- gatorfree, on 05/12/2009, -3/+5Move to Oakland! Come for the low-low taxes and business-friendly city leaders. Stay for the welcoming aura of love and happiness.
- edebolt, on 05/12/2009, -0/+2yes they are going to be bankrupted because they are part of GM which is going bankrupt. GM Opel makes great cars and is considered a great employer and green business. If GM Opel stood on its own two legs it probably would not require a B.O or perhaps a small assistance from Germany.
- inactive, on 05/12/2009, -0/+2They could move the Shock to Churchill Downs?
- lostinseganet, on 05/12/2009, -0/+2Michigan has good hospitals as well, and water
- lostinseganet, on 05/12/2009, -1/+3The assembly line was invented. That was the break threw that gave them and edge. Also paying employees enough money so they could spend it on company cars.
- lostinseganet, on 05/12/2009, -0/+2hmmm that is true.
- mksmothers, on 05/12/2009, -1/+3GM is doomed BECAUSE they make bad cars. Edmonds and Consumer Reports routinely rate American cars way below foreign cars when it comes to value and reliability.
- FAT_PIGGY, on 05/12/2009, -3/+4Detroit = pigpen
- secrity, on 05/12/2009, -0/+1Like Euro Ford, Opel makes cars that people want to buy. Ford and Opel in Europe also didn't make the ***** 1970's and 1980's American cars that ***** up the American car manufacturer's reputation in the US.
- rebrad, on 05/12/2009, -0/+1The Toledo Tigers, the Ft Wayne Pistons and the Columbus Lions.
