- uptwolait, on 12/02/2008, -3/+61Who can afford to buy their jets now?
Oh wait, AIG will take them. - trolleyfan, on 12/02/2008, -5/+50And by a staggering coincidence, they decided just *after* they got hugely embarrassed by it when they went begging to Congress...
- peestandingup, on 12/04/2008, -2/+36All this ***** the executives are throwing out to try & get this bailout money are missing the damn point.
THEY ARENT MAKING PRODUCTS THAT PEOPLE WANT TO BUY. - eminn3m, on 12/03/2008, -1/+29A+++++ corporate jet~!~!!~! Fast Shipping! Would buy again.
- spritom, on 12/03/2008, -3/+21If a corporation wants to have a fleet of private jets, that's up to them, but don't go asking the taxpayers for money.
- zinc6471, on 12/04/2008, -0/+14you don't really need to travel when you can do video conferencing
- hardigree, on 12/02/2008, -2/+15It's a hard time when CEOs have to fly business class.
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -0/+12There's money in the banana stand.
- ousthouse, on 12/04/2008, -1/+12Please. The thing where congress "grilled" them for their corporate jet use was all a show.
It makes congress look "tough" and it makes the corporate types look like they're suffering. In reality, Congress and the corporate big shots are laughing at us and spending OUR money. - BoneStamp, on 12/02/2008, -1/+11Ya, we should get something back... it's called loan interest.
- strngwys, on 12/03/2008, -1/+11Finally, I can pick up a corporate jet for next to nothing. Thanks downward spiraling economy!
- BoneStamp, on 12/02/2008, -7/+16Corporate jets aren't for luxury. They're for security, schedule efficiency and cost effectiveness when moving dozen of employees. Like the article says, only crucial travel is being made and therefore a fleet of corporate jets isn't cost effective.
- brucealmighty, on 12/02/2008, -4/+12Shouldn't they go to the US Air Force? If they're not gonna use them anymore it seems like the taxpayers oughta get something back for their $25 Billion...
- publiclurker, on 12/04/2008, -1/+9It's for inflating the egos of self important idiots. Nothing more.
- AstroZombie138, on 12/04/2008, -0/+8The corporate jet flights that I've seen typically have 2-3 passengers. The cost to operate these aircraft is typically around $10k per hour which is several times over the cost of last minute first class fares.
While there are legitimate uses for these, they typically used when standard travel would suffice. Lastly, there usually isn't a need to own these aircraft. Even Bill Gates and Warren Buffet use NetJets. - ErickStevenson, on 12/04/2008, -1/+9Dozens of employees? I have never been in my companies private jet! Seriously though, you think they use this for the purpose you lists? How much is it to maintain those things? Storage? And what about fuel costs, specially when prices where high. Don't tell me meetings, becuase like what zinc6471 said, you can do video conferencing. *****'em, their business is failing in a free market that everyone wanted, and now that they are losing to competitors, we have to bail them out? I say they loose those mansions and *****, why not use those to bail out their company? Do you really think they care about people losing jobs? Not really... just remember what goes or gets cut back first when a company is tanking? Oh yeah! Employees! Becuase those damn "luxuries" they need are more important.
- rwert, on 12/02/2008, -1/+8Well, they can always drive a Ford Escape hybrid. Oh wait...isn't that...right.
- Pramma, on 12/04/2008, -0/+7This is why we should let them fail and re-vamp their companies themselves. It's going to be hard if an embarrassing meeting with congress needs to take place every time they are expected to employ common sense.
- stonebone4, on 12/04/2008, -1/+7Are they at least keeping the stair-cars? They gotta get around town somehow.
- doiveo, on 12/02/2008, -4/+10Sorry, horse are out of the barn.
- cparsons, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6crooks
- laizzesfaire, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6I am glad people are focusing on the important issues like corporate jets and not the real reasons they are failing.. like labor unions... dare not call them out
- samard2002, on 12/04/2008, -1/+7I have to give them some credit for at least identifying and reacting to negative public sentiment. AIG continues to act like they have absolutely no idea their company is insolvent.
- mediaspree, on 12/04/2008, -1/+6What is this security nonsense. If it were not for these bailouts I woudl have no idea what these CEO's looked like, or honestly, what their names were. Sure I'm a nobody, but who is looking to take out the CEO of GM? The CEO of Ford? They seem like good buddies to me. And if the CEO is so important to the company that if they died in a terrorist attack or some other "normal" plane tradgedy, how come their companies are broke and asking for billions from the taxpayer. They failed. They are failures. Let them go live in their estates and leave the running of the company to competent hands.
- Shivalyn, on 12/04/2008, -1/+6Well at least they're doing *something*.
AIG just looked at the $150 billion dollar gift they just got and flipped off the general public while giving gifts and kick backs to the people who got them in the ***** hole to begin with.
The GM higher-ups are kicking themselves for not working at AIG, where no matter how badly you ***** up you still get paid. - wilf_brim, on 12/04/2008, -1/+6A good idea, but it isn' going to help much. This probably amounts to the amount of money that may keep GM afloat for another few days. The problem is that their cost structure is totally out of whack, and their products are unreliable not competitive with the competition.
- BloodWenis, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5Exactly. Now and only now are they driving hybrids to Congress and offering to work for $1.
- diggum85, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4Did you see the movie "The Jerk" where the guy was asking for money to get the seats fixed in his private jet? The seats' condition was so bad, he was ashamed to fly his friends to the super bowl.
- RedStateRetard, on 12/04/2008, -1/+5After they sell the jets, they will use leased/chartered private jets.
- publiclurker, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4I wasn't aware that Toyota had corporate jets. And while I don't have the link at hand, Toyota's CEO makes around one million, which is a lot less than these people do.
- JasonCox, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3Butchered.
- RedStateRetard, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3Memo to all the Wal-Mart bashers. All the executives at Wal-Mart have been flying commercial for years, including the CEO. They stay 2 in a Hotel room. Not a 5 star hotel or "grand suite" either.
- Target91, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3Uh, GM doesn't own Ford.
- Kolbeck10, on 12/04/2008, -2/+5It's unions.
And being handcuffed to pensions that aren't viable. - bradjenkins0, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3The company I work for is also cutting back all unnecessary expenses as well, such as corporate jets, even though we just ended the 2nd best quarter in the history of the company. Every dime does count, and things are likely to keep getting worse before they get better. Cutting unnecessary expenses is a general trend for all companies right now.
- Bith8654, on 12/04/2008, -2/+5They have to start making money before we can get interest.
- TimDigg, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3"who is looking to take out the CEO of GM? The CEO of Ford?"
You haven't heard of the CEO Paparazzi? They're ***** merciless! - RajAtWork, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2Total nonsense. What is wrong with executive using jet if he needs one? Cost of his time and security dictates this.
- NonLeftistDiggr, on 12/04/2008, -1/+3Wow, they should go into Al Gore's new age religious extortion business instead, then they could fly all they want without taking ***** from congress.
- Avaseal, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2this reminds me of a kid from highschool or something
Kid - "Mom, Dad..can i get a raise on my allowance"
Parents - "OK, but you have to start using an electric car...and no more private jet, mister!"
Kid - "Pfft....Fine" - Wrangler76, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2LOL. Have you seen cars in Japan? They look NOTHING like cars that they send here. Cars there are all boxy versions of honda fits, except smaller- sort of like those "smart" cars. They don't look like Rav4s, civics, corollas, etc. You think their prowess at making smart car look-a-likes helped them with the likes of designing masterpieces like the Civic? Give credit where it's due.
When did the economy go to the dumps? When has Toyota/Honda been gaining on the Big 3? Yeah, I thought so.
Domestic fanboys = clueless. - tgc1, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2Okay so when do they start making good vehicles that people are ready to buy? Is that in their little plan somewhere? Or are they just going to keep producing ***** and spiral further and further down the toilet. Because at this point i'm so sick of hearing about this that i'm HOPING they just go all the way down the hole. They have made nothing but crap in the last 30 years. They should start coming up with reasons for us to care, let alone save them. Nobody threw me a bone when I was suffering in debt. Still am. How many people are suffering through this economic downturn? Where is their bailout? Oh, that's right... they're not crass enough to ask for one.
I've said it a few times now. And i'll repeat it. ***** 'em. Seriously. If you can't make it in the business world, then you don't belong there. Get out of the way and let a REAL company take over. People who lose their jobs will find employment elsewhere, just like every other industry that has ever gone under.
See: Horse and Buggy - gavdana, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2Bruce, I actually like this idea. Use the jets to pre-pay some of the principal.
- mGARANDEUR1, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2You cannot beat Toyota and Nissan for reliability.
- frygar, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2Admit it, they're only doing this because they got caught like a kid with his hand in the cookie jar. ***** you, GM, you corporate pricks.
- rockstar1o9, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2Now they need to get rid of Buick (who the ***** drives a Buick anymore?) and merge GMC with Chevorlet. Sell Daewoo to Kia/Hyundai or move all Daewoo operations to emerging markets like China. Merge as many other brands together. Pontiac and Chevy non-trucks can be consolidated. Get rid of Saturn except for the popular models (Saturn should've been what Scion is now).
I want to see a GM that takes a more Japanese approach, with about 4 small and midrange cars, 1 minivan, 1 or 2 high-end/larger/luxury cars, no more than 3 SUVs (Escalade, Suburban, and one crossover), maybe a sports car or 2, and 3 lines of trucks (non industrial / heavy line) - bman1984, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2If you made 30 million dollars last year, you would never have to work again, on that years salary alone. Id guess that they probably have a buck or two in the bank.
- Heapbasket, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2I'd agree with your statement if GM wasn't needing a bailout.
- Barackalypse, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2No, but we'll give you some more health care regulation you'll be responsible for, raising your costs!
- amps211, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2Tough time for pilots...
