- inactive, on 11/04/2008, -7/+44Maybe sales are down because people don't get a new fricken car every year.
- hokie47, on 11/04/2008, -2/+31Yes Toyota is doing much better but they are down 29%.
- Phate8263, on 11/04/2008, -1/+25Why is everyone making this out to be an American car company problem RTFA! Every car manufacturer they mentioned lost double digits.
Toyota -23% despite 0% financing
Nissan -35%
Honda -25% - Batfishy, on 11/04/2008, -5/+28stk - GM and the others of the big three have been dictating what Americans want for years. Almost from their inception. Instead of designing a Prius, they were drawing Hummers.
I was born and raised in union family. I never dreamed of buying anything other than American cars. My father wouldn't have let me park in his driveway (really). But now, well, GM deserves what it gets. Too bad. - pintomp3, on 11/04/2008, -3/+25they like to hang out with the digg.com climatologists
- UselessTrivia, on 11/04/2008, -5/+27Bad Economy + Terrible Products = Craptastic Sales
Here's an idea to cut costs. Don't release a new model of every car every single year. Planned obsolescence is a fantastically retarded idea. The market decides what is and is not obsolete. - Dinsdale77, on 11/04/2008, -11/+32This is what happens when you put all your eggs in the SUV basket.
- mywhitenoise, on 11/04/2008, -3/+21I drive a Toyota Prius, and it's mileage still isn't good enough for me. I can't believe that the upcoming model is hardly an improvement.
Where are the electric cars? What the ***** is the hold up? - xero69, on 11/04/2008, -0/+17It's called a recession. Every sector is going to get hit!
- leerayIG88, on 11/04/2008, -2/+18I think we need bigger SUVs
- BigPapi, on 11/04/2008, -0/+14It's their money, they can do whatever the hell they want with it.
But I agree, buying a brand new car every 2 years is lame. It's much more fun to get a new one every year. - xcheats, on 11/04/2008, -1/+15You support pollution too right? You realize there is a huge difference in emission regulation between China and the U.S. and this accounts for a huge amount of gas mileage. Get rid of your catalytic converter and all the other restrictions and we'll see what it gets. I would say undoubtedly it probable has to do with gearing as well. I'd like to see what your Chinese version gets at around 70MPH, I would venture to say its geared for speeds averaging around 35 not 70.
- Anand999, on 11/04/2008, -1/+15I love how the summary was worded so as to obscure the fact that Nissan had a worse drop than Ford.
The only company that didn't take a double digit overall hit was BMW and that's thanks the Mini division. BMW branded cars themselves are down almost 14%.
Anyway, here is a full chart:

Okay, I'm sorry. GM has really pissed me off for the last 20 years or so. My husband works for Cadillac, so every time I hear of layoffs, it worries me.
The big three got greedy, lazy and stupid. They will suffer and probably should. The sad part are the employees who were only trying to make a living who will suffer first and longest.
Yes, GM has gotten a little smarter with mileage, but not nearly as smart as they should have been, a long long time ago. - inactive, on 11/04/2008, -5/+17I don't need a PHD in economics to buy a car or have an opinion on buying one.
- Trekhawk, on 11/04/2008, -0/+12Because no one else builds SUV.
-Toyota Rav4
-Toyota Highlander
-Toyota FJ Cruiser
-Toyota Landcruiser
-Toyota Sequoia - inactive, on 11/04/2008, -0/+11I agree with everything except maybe Pontiac. The G6 and a couple of others might have the ability to be converted into something worthwhile. Just stay away from the guy who drew the Aztec. What the hell was that?
- inactive, on 11/04/2008, -7/+17that's what happens when you make ***** cars for 10 years, and not change your ways in a timely manner.
- stk198323, on 11/04/2008, -10/+20EV1 was canceled due to the amount of money being wasted in the project.
The car costed more to produce then what they could ask for it.
And before you start with: they add 10 000 people waiting to buy one, it has been proved over and over again that from that 10 000 people INTERESTED in buying one, only around 0,1% was actullay willing to PAY for one!
Then you cans ask why did they trash them? To which I will rspond that due to the fact that around 1 BILLION dollar was taken to develop the EV1 prototype and test vehicle, if a company like Toyota could get a hand on one for only say 50 000$, they would gain hundred of millions in research money.
The EV1was never completely trashed. The greeline saturn vehicle use some EV1 inspired ''hybrid'' technology, the two mode system now found on some GM SUV are coming (altough heavily modified) from the EV1 project, the Volt car is basicly the EV1 with some better peforming batteries... the EV1 PHYSICAL CAR was trashed, but all the insight in hybride technology gained by GM remained.
Now you can say: but they waited way too long to use that technology.
To which I will only say: yep your right on this part, GM has no excuse for that one.
But yet your are way too ''jap fag'' to my liking. Toyota is not THAT much better then GM for the gas mileage and while certainly be behind GM when the volt comes out, so maybe you should tone down your hate toward american car company (or is it only GM that you hate?).
Beside, to answer your first comment, GM was down 45% but Toyota was down 23% and GM had no sale this month while Toyota had a 0% interest rate sale with other incentive... so it's not all that bad for GM... - BESTenemy, on 11/04/2008, -2/+11 Today's American car manufacturers (Ford, Chrysler, GM) resemble banks rather than industrial companies. They rely heavily on tax injections, subsidies and government orders (that make up 20% of their orders). If they were to rely on sales and stocks for their capital, they would've gone bankrupts back in the 70's. They almost did, but the government stepped in to guarantee their debts and insure their liabilities. The dinosaurs that should've gone extinct to make way for new enterprise had grown bigger, more inefficient, more wasteful. Instead of bankrupting themselves, they now hang by the rope tied around our necks. We're all shareholders in Ford, GM and Chrysler through the taxes we pay, yet we're no beneficiaries.
The attempt to rescue the failing giants is yet another illustration of our government's desire to have capitalism on the way up and socialism on the way down. Privatizing gains, socializing losses. - wrenchone, on 11/04/2008, -1/+10Thank you! This isn't just a problem GM problem, then entire global auto industry is taking a hit.
- charmaniac, on 11/04/2008, -5/+14GM can survive if they make it to 2010 when many of the Union contracts expire. They need to get rid of Buick, Hummer, and Pontiac. The Chevrolet Malibu is actually a step in the right direction, but there is no doubt GM is facing severe challenges as a result of poor management.
- representDLV, on 11/04/2008, -1/+10why?
- knowitman, on 11/04/2008, -0/+8GM makes more models of vehicles that get 30+ mpg on the highway then any other manufacturer. All chevy car models except for the soon to be released Camaro and Corvette can get 30+ mpg, and the Camaro and Corvette get very close to it.
- dogshaft, on 11/04/2008, -2/+10I hate to break it to you, but McCain will never become "Persident".
- jazzviolin, on 11/04/2008, -3/+11The solution is simple - GM, Ford, start making cars that get 35+.
Why is it that my Ford Focus Sport (S) in China got an average of 38-44 MPG (not imperial, US), and the same model here gets 24/33? (source: http://www.mpgomatic.com/2008/05/27/ford-focus-rev ... )
American car manufacturers produce poor quality, low gas mileage cars with planned obsolescence.
I support quality. - Akairenn, on 11/04/2008, -3/+10Ford has themselves to blame. I was considering a new car. Then I realized my '98 ZX2 with 110K on it only needs a new set of tires, brakes and an oil change, and I'll be good to go for another 110k.
...It also helps (well, hurts car manufacturers) that all the 08's out there are pretty much arse ugly, or stupidly expensive. :p - wrenchone, on 11/04/2008, -0/+7It takes 4-5+ years to completely design and develop a new car. it's not as simple as flipping a switch for "Better cars."
- stk198323, on 11/04/2008, -1/+8No they couldn't because GM only leased it to a few hundred person, and those need to report to GM every so often (think it was 2 weeks or a month) in order to make sure that the car was used as directed. The lease contract provided clause that people could not add any aftermarket part to the car: sound system, engine modification, etc etc.
And probably that every important part on it was sealed and had some tag's on it that people could not brake... like thos warranty void if seal is broken only that in this situation if said seal was broken the person would probably risk some legal problem due to the contract terms. Beside, only a few hundred were ever mande and handed out to some people close to GM for easier monitoring. - kaelyiesta, on 11/04/2008, -1/+8Looks like the people who try to get others to bury their heads in the sand got here first..............................
- staplez, on 11/04/2008, -1/+8Yeah thriving with 26% loss. http://www.mysanantonio.com/business/33795969.html oh wait.....
- kingmanic, on 11/04/2008, -0/+723% not 29%.
- inactive, on 11/04/2008, -3/+9The unrealistic price of new cars is why they can't sell any. They need to be thinking $17K to $22K - not $24K to $36K. Those are dot com bubble car prices.
- jbmcb, on 11/04/2008, -0/+6Yeah GM is doing so bad they only sold 16,000 more cars than Toyota.
- bacon_skoda, on 11/04/2008, -0/+6Battery!
- staplez, on 11/04/2008, -1/+72mpg difference kind of like the Camry? They hybrid gets 33-34 the regular Camry gets 31. ZOMG only 2 mpg difference!!! Time to abandon Toyota yes?
- Armagetto, on 11/04/2008, -0/+6A major factor in this is Cerberus Capital Management. They currently hold 80% of Chrysler and 51% of GMAC. In order to get the remaining 49% of GMAC, they are choking GM's new vehicle sales in order to force them to take Chrysler. That is why GM has begun promoting alternative methods of finance apart from GMAC of late. Remember, just 2 months ago when everyone else was taking $30 losses, GM only posted a 15% hit due to their employee pricing for everyone program.
GM's biggest problem in the marketplace is their craptastic dealer network, with the exception of Saturn, and customer perception of it's products. GM, like every other car company out there today, has everything from subcompacts and fuel-efficient passenger cars all the way up to crossovers and large trucks and SUVs. Unfortunately, they continue to be known as the company that brought you the Hummer.
I drive a GM, but I used my head and picked up a fuel-efficient car back in 2002 when gas was still cheap. What gets me is all these crybabies who lined their driveways with SUVs and now whine that it was GM's fault for forcing gas guzzlers on us. Fuel efficient vehicles have always been around, it's just that people were more concerned about showing off then being sensible and now we're seeing the effects. - BoneStamp, on 11/04/2008, -0/+6I'm not sure what you're talking about, pretty much every car manufacturer has a 3-4 year design cycle on all their products.
- sdbyrd, on 11/04/2008, -1/+7these comments suck
- inactive, on 11/04/2008, -0/+5What? You lost me at the McCain Presidency part.
- cawpin, on 11/04/2008, -1/+6No they don't.
Also, GM has more models than Toyota or Honda that get 30+ MPG. Pull your head out. - pintomp3, on 11/04/2008, -0/+5credit crunch. thank god. do we really need to be buying new cars every 3 years on credit? it's just the end of the automotive bubble.
- inactive, on 11/04/2008, -21/+26Must be all those cars with sub-par gas mileage.
No wonder Toyota is thriving. - BoneStamp, on 11/04/2008, -0/+5I think it's more because they (GMAC) stopped offering leasing on most of their products in September. Basically, they don't want to own your car when the economy collapses and you can't make your payments.
- ScrewedThePooch, on 11/04/2008, -2/+7The Asian car companies employ more US people that the American car companies outsourcing production to China. ***** GM.
- harrisbradley, on 11/04/2008, -5/+10Buy this stock if is goes below $5. Buy Ford now.
- BoneStamp, on 11/04/2008, -3/+8GM has far more hybrid and economy models than Toyota and Honda combined.
- one2gamble, on 11/04/2008, -0/+5you have clearly never owned a VW
- redxii, on 11/04/2008, -0/+5Ain't nothin wrong with a lightly used car that works perfectly either.
