- ericdano, on 07/12/2008, -0/+10It's amazing that it takes a crisis for people to do this. We should have been looking into alternatives from the get go. In fact, we should always be on the look out for new sources of fuel and energy. Perhaps if we had, we wouldn't be in such a mess now.
- inactive, on 07/11/2008, -0/+10"No Ticket"
- life38, on 07/11/2008, -0/+9I believe this will be the biggest and single most important change that could happen sooner than later. The aviation market will only implode without it.
- netgeek06, on 07/12/2008, -0/+8That could make aviation history.
- Brian48216, on 07/12/2008, -0/+6Are you kidding?
The boeing 787 is made up of mostly composite materials and the technology behind that isn't 100 years old.
Virgin Atlantic already did a test flight on one of their planes using bio fuels.
More importantly, jet fuel is jet fuel, regardless of where it comes from, if it's chemically identical, then it'll do the same exact thing.
Any change over would take a few years. Not decades. - DeskFlyer, on 07/12/2008, -0/+5Since airliners burn Jet-A fuel, I have to pop in here and say that it is actually derived from paraffin oil, not kerosene. Same damn difference I guess. :)
- tbhurst, on 07/11/2008, -0/+5All I can say is they better move quick - at this rate kerosene will be $10 a gallon on the global market.
- inactive, on 07/12/2008, -0/+5Jet fuel can be anything as long as it has a good burn rate and doesnt damage engine, millitary use kerosene and diesel mix
- thoatt, on 07/12/2008, -0/+3Dirigibles FTW!
- Kanele, on 07/12/2008, -0/+3agreed, but money plans short-term
- sovietninja, on 07/12/2008, -2/+4If anything, the rising oil costs may be bringing in the new era of transportation technological advancement. I for one, welcome our repulsor-lift (aka Star Wars anti-gravity technology) inventing overlords.
- monkeybelly, on 07/12/2008, -1/+3aircraft fueled by vegetable biomass.
Cool! - WolfDV, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2nuclear powered aircraft?
- proliance, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2Hybrid aircraft?
- plr4ever, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2Yeah, because they lose so much energy hitting the brakes mid-flight.
the cost of those batteries would probably negate any benifits from electrically assisted engines.
Maybe another kind of hybrid... - dsmx, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2Jet engines have been around for 85 years? last time I checked it's been nearly 70 years since it was invented.
- inactive, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2there are actually electric and solar powered aircraft now. they're still light, but i'd rather get one of those than be tethered to resource price spikes.
- GT35R, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2who the hell says you test vehicle with passengers? When a car company test an new cars do they use a test driver or ordinary people with passengers?
So what is your point? We shouldn't do it at all because it may take a while? - Ryan0617, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1Thank you for stating the obvious.
- onefix, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1Yea, but noone wants a 2 day business trip to take 2 weeks. We have become dependent on the speed of jet travel.
- alexkreuz, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1One word. Capitalism.
- inactive, on 07/12/2008, -1/+2What are the alternatives? Don't tell me grain-based biofuels. Their limited introduction has already cause food prices to inflate, and economic hardships in the 3rd world. It is one thing to desire to explore alternatives it is quite another to have a viable plan. In 30 years of mouthing off about weening ourselves from mideast oil, we are still at the economic mercy of the mullahs.
- mmilton, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1Hybrid jets that burn jet fuel and oil
- lettruthout, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1That may have been written in jest, but there's an interesting book on just such a thing...
The Deltoid Pumpkin Seed
http://www.johnmcphee.com/deltoid.htm - dsmx, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1Well I have a concept for a time machine however that doesn't mean anything until a working prototype exists. It is the same with the jet engine you count from when it actually exists not from when you came up with the idea.
- GT35R, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1you are summing that there isnt already on going research or that research in this field has not been done. I think Virgin Atlantic has been doing research in this field.
- waydee, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1algae.
- GT35R, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1are you just listing a bunch of facts about airplanes? You think making ***** for cars is easy too? Yeah they dont operate at 30,000+ ft but if built wrong they are dangerous.
By the way if the fuel lines are leaking in an airplane and you are still flying it don't you think that is because it not being maintained? If an airplane is being maintained leaking fuel lines would be noticed. - outlaw686, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1couldn't we use that vegetable biomass for something else? Like WORLD HUNGER? There are better ways to make alternative fuel. Vegetable biomass isn't one of them
- desertDenizen, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1I have no problem with eating Soylent Green, if that will help.
- iJessicaRabbit, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1That's it! A gyroscope. It will allow for maximum balance and…Mr. Hat, you're a genius!
"IT" still beats flying. - desertDenizen, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1I think you're absolutely right. People will take fewer trips, but of longer duration, if they're able. Combine with mobile broadband, and trends in out-sourcing, and that really suggests a different world for the have-laptop-will-travel knowledge worker.
- desertDenizen, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1GODLESS HIPPIES!
/sarcasm - desertDenizen, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1The downside of democracies' stability is their inability to act until a majority of constituents share the same pain (i.e., crisis).
In contrast, dictators can make sweeping changes happen immediately with the wave of a hand.
So please tell me... how the ***** did we end up with the worst of both worlds?? - desertDenizen, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1Too heavy.
Oil/gas is perfectly suited for aircraft and manufacturing chemicals. I would predict that, eventually, these are what we will primarily use oil for (and they will be expensive), with a mix of alternative fuels for everything else. Using oil to heat homes is like using a Rembrandt to wipe your ass. - datcrazydj, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/05/business/worldbu ...
They are. - outlaw686, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1First thought in my head too.
- ravenswing2, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1Sad but true. CEOs would not get their multi million dollar bonuses for thinking too far ahead if it affected the near term bottom line.
- dsmx, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1Way short of 85.
- aeroeng, on 07/12/2008, -1/+1I wuld like to c a nuclear one;) like those submarines it wuld never need refuling:P
- inactive, on 07/12/2008, -1/+1I think nuclear powered chemical dissociation of something (water to form hydrogen?) is part of the answer. Nukes are the only alternative to have the power density required to reasonable do the job.
- chuckpoole, on 07/12/2008, -0/+0The single biggest threat to the airline industry is decreased demand. Yes, demand can be a function of price and higher prices mean fewer travelers. One larger factor that the airlines can not escape is that people are not flying as much because technology has made it so cheap to conduct business at home. The airlines need cheap prices to artificially support a flatter growth curve and a change in thinking. You can not escape paradigm changes. People who absolutely need to fly will do so with little regard to price. Those who don't will seek better alternatives that don't involve flying to get the job done. There are plenty of exciting things to do in your own backyard with a minimal expenditure of energy and impact on the planet.
- Kanele, on 07/12/2008, -1/+1World will get its size back, only rich people will get to travel fast.
- goon5000, on 07/12/2008, -0/+0who's going to sell it to them? the evil energy companies?
- Ryan0617, on 07/12/2008, -1/+1It already is in Europe.
- alexkreuz, on 07/14/2008, -0/+0Ethanol. I hear its a magic fuel.
- skyflyerke, on 07/20/2008, -0/+0I use biodiesel in my car...
But an airplane with biodiesel I still will not trust :-)
WWW.BIODIESEL-INFO.NET - ReganDealez, on 07/13/2008, -0/+0Airlines ask customer help to curb oil speculation
http://www.newzof.com/news/Airlines_ask_customer_h ... - aeroeng, on 07/12/2008, -0/+0yep there are but sadly there's no way they can carry even 10 ppl let alone 300 ppl across the atlantic
