- these3remain, on 11/02/2009, -0/+72Let's see now, Ford, who didn't take the bailout is making a comeback. GM and Chrysler , who needed the money "urgently" are going belly-up. What's wrong with this picture?
- publiclurker, on 11/02/2009, -7/+45Ford is run by an heir of the founder and not some overpriced, pointy hair who is only interested in gutting the company for their own personal profit.
- Elsewhere42, on 11/02/2009, -3/+35I'm trying to recall is Ford accepted any of the Bailout money.
If they did not, this is a WIN. - SanDiegoFreeway, on 11/03/2009, -0/+30Not quite. The current CEO (from 2006), Alan Mulally, is not an heir of Henry Ford, although William Clay Ford, Jr. is still Chairman of the Board of Directors.
It's worth noting that Mulally was willing to mortgage the company's assets (again, in 2006) to acquire capital for a turnaround. GM and Chrysler waited until they were on death's door and then ran screaming for a bailout. - CptBuck, on 11/03/2009, -3/+31Are you saying that's bad?
All I can say is that its better to give up overtime than to get laid off, and that's the kind of calculus that a lot of companies have to deal with right now. - inactive, on 11/03/2009, -1/+27Go Ford!
- samard2002, on 11/03/2009, -2/+21Ford is making a "comeback"? When was Ford down?
- wigren, on 11/03/2009, -2/+21Meanwhile my Escort is nearing 390,000 and still kicking like it just turned over 100,000.
- Awesomebox5000, on 11/03/2009, -0/+18While that's likely true, I know of several people who have purchased new or low-milage used cars in cash. They do this tricky thing with their bank accounts where they put money into it for a while but don't take money out. I think it's call 'saving' or some ***** like that.
- publiclurker, on 11/02/2009, -7/+24They did not accept any bailout money. Just last week, however, they tried to get the workers to accept concessions yet again to save the company.
- 12340987, on 11/03/2009, -2/+19not much, I think cash for clunkers got a lot of new toyotas sold.
- SanDiegoFreeway, on 11/03/2009, -1/+14Chrysler rested on their laurels after the success of the K-car line. GM? I don't know what they're smoking. They never marketed Saturn or Geo correctly, and killing Pontiac as a brand will probably just drive Pontiac drivers to Japanese companies.
(Disclaimer: I currently drive a Honda Accord. But every Pontiac I've ever driven was solid even at 100K+ miles.) - AgmLauncher, on 11/03/2009, -0/+12"Ford is moving closer to selling the unit to China's Geely Automotive"
Man, what a massive long-term strategic error it is for the West to be selling automakers like Volvo to China. This will greatly accelerate China's ability to make world class vehicles, and turn around and compete against us with the advantage of sweatshop labor costs.
The auto industry is already unsustainably bloated from having too many brands without the dozen or so China will add to the fray.
These are only temporary victories for Ford. The real challenge will come when China starts importing cars that are better than Kia (in otherwords, "good enough"), but cost half has much as a Ford's similarly classed vehicles.
You mark my words, the sale of Volvo to a Chinese company will bite Ford in the ass. - gtluke, on 11/03/2009, -0/+10It's not just a ford engine, the entire Mazda6 is built by ford on the same assembly line as a mustang. Not the same plant, the same LINE.
- MercenarySlick, on 11/03/2009, -3/+13I want a Ford Fusion.
- tnoy, on 11/03/2009, -0/+8Pay who back for what?
- Sedako, on 11/03/2009, -0/+8Though I do not own a Ford vehicle, I can proudly say that my Mazda 6 sports a Ford engine. Keep up the good work Ford!
- PandaBearShenyu, on 11/03/2009, -0/+8Ford actually made cars for the other markets in the world long before GM even realized that hummers wouldn't last. Diversification wins yet again.
- Awesomebox5000, on 11/03/2009, -1/+8Provided that Ford doesn't have any defective floormats...
- lived666, on 11/03/2009, -8/+14How much of their profit was due to cash for clunkers? They didn't take the bailout but still got taxpayer money through that program.
- QQQQUUUU, on 11/03/2009, -1/+6I bought Ford stock at 2 bucks a share
- reticulate, on 11/03/2009, -0/+5Ford makes good cars. They also happen to be very popular in places that aren't America.
Not sure why this would be a surprise. - zoomaKabu, on 11/03/2009, -0/+4Ford owned a controlling interest in Mazda and ran the company from 1997 until 2008. Ford still owns 13% of Mazda.
- 12345421, on 11/03/2009, -1/+5I am not surprised. Their new cars look ***** sharp compared to what they had on the market just a couple years ago. That Ford Edge is a sexy looking SUV that doesn't break the bank.
- yunus, on 11/03/2009, -1/+5Imagine how much quicker Ford could have turned around had we not given any money to GM or Chrysler.
- dasbrewer, on 11/03/2009, -0/+4Yes Sierra, for what? Ford did not accept any bailout money. GM and Chrysler did and they still need more. I have a relative with the same problem. Handouts don't help, in most situations.
- nathorne, on 11/03/2009, -0/+4Look at what the executives have done for this company. They created the plan that is pushing the company ahead, even in these tough economic times. As a Ford employee, I have no problem with our executive compensation, without them we would probably be owned by the government and hurting because of it, just like "the other two".
- nofreedom4theUS, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3Feel the wrath of the American people! I and many others I have spoke with say they will NEVER buy another Government Motors vehicle. I support Ford. My next car will either be a Ford or a foreign car. I wanted a BMW, but part of me wants to support Ford for not begging for a government handout.
- digitalArtform, on 11/03/2009, -1/+4This is digg. You're supposed to misspell shoddy with two t's.
- Solkre, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3/me hugs his 97 Taurus that's still going great.
- jcavaliere, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3That’s a horrible assumption. I buy a low mileage 2-3 year old car every 3-5 years - cash. It costs me 15% less (assuming a 5% loan for 3 years) then someone who makes payments and the car is typically 1/2 of what it was new.
As an Example, I just bought a 2007 Lincoln which retailed about $50K new, for $22K with 20K miles on it. I’ll keep it for 5 years and I have no car payment. - 12340987, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3There's still the stigma of reliability. They do look much better now, but will it last like hondas and toyotas are assumed to?
- wakingrufus, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3That looks like a loan, not a bailout
- Solkre, on 11/03/2009, -1/+4thrashertm,
You've mentioned this at least THREE times above this post. Probably more, but I'm tired of digging them from the grave to check. WTF do you work for, GM?
The money was for researching/building fuel efficient cars, not to keep them from going *****-up. That's not a bailout.
"WASHINGTON, Sept 17 (Reuters) - The U.S. Energy Department on Thursday said it has finalized a loan of $5.9 billion to Ford Motor Co (F.N) to produce fuel-efficient vehicles.
"This investment is part of our commitment to creating the clean energy jobs of the future while supporting American innovation," U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu said in a statement. (Reporting by Ayesha Rascoe)" - GrammerPants, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2I bought my first car financed in 2005, I bought it out a few years back, sold it and bought something with cash a few years old. Never again will I loan or finance.
- thrashertm, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2A bailout like that wouldn't be counted in revenue (a loan is a liability and is revenue neutral, perhaps even lowering revenue when you factor in interest payments), but they were able to use it to pay expenses and keep themselves afloat.
- sduncan000, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2Amen - as a Saturn owner, I am heartbroken that I will never get to purchase that new Sky I've been wanting.
- thrashertm, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2Tesla got $150 million under the same program. I'm not sure if Chrysler and GM got money under it as well.
- thrashertm, on 11/03/2009, -3/+5They got a stealth bailout $5 billion from the Department of Energy - http://www.reuters.com/article/rbssAutoTruckManufa ...
- boomslang101, on 11/03/2009, -2/+4And the ceo is answerable to the board so it's still run by an heir though maybe not day to day
- rrife, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2They just got that "bailout" so this quarter's revenues probably don't include any of those funds.
- nathorne, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2Go Ford! As an employee, I've never been this excited to work for any company. Ford has the plan, and more importantly, the cars to lead the automotive industry. If you haven't given Ford a look lately, all I've got to say is "Drive One". If you do, I promise that you'll want one.
- GrodyChamp, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2I'm pretty sure they get an hourly wage at a job they applied for and chose to work at. Shut up retard.
- balthisar, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2I think those loans were extended to all of the Big 3, and I *think* (but admit I'm not sure) we also offered to the others that have manufacturing here.
- ldkronos, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2No, actually they got a ***** of sales from cash for clunkers. In fact they did better than Toyota. The top 10 list released by the DOT is flawed (or some would say conveniently devised to skew the results a certain way). It didn't properly count all vehicles of a given model together. Instead, it split them up by model+engine+drivetrain.
If car A sold 10000 units and all were in the same configuration, while car B sold 15000 units, but they were split between 3 different configurations (ex: a 4 cyl, a 6 cyl, and an 8 cyl) with each configuration selling 5000 units, then according to the DOT list, car A had the highest sales.
I haven't seen the analysis of the final numbers, but as of August, Edmunds released a list showing Ford having 4 of the top 10 (1st, 2nd, 5th, and 10th), while toyota only had 9th place.
http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/edmunds-dots-cash ... - rrife, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2They just got that "bailout" so this quarter's revenues probably don't include any of those funds.
- iskin, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1Don't they still make more than Toyota's workers?
- thrashertm, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1Right, but it is highly probable that those funds have helped Ford keep its head above water in terms of paying off some expenses.
- TAGline, on 11/03/2009, -2/+3Are you insane 123? Auto sales in August were up *44%* from June (the program still tainted July data) and then crashed 34% in September with its end. *All* the auto companies benefited.
- AgmLauncher, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1Asian as in Japanese or Korean, yes, but currently Chinese made vehicles are awful. The ones that have blatantly copied the designs of western/asian vehicles look decent, but they're complete junk. A Volvo will be 100x safer, and will last much longer than a Chinese made car.
