- Racer20, on 01/25/2009, -2/+97People aren't buying cars right now because the economy sucks, job losses are off the charts, and nobody can get loans. *of course* they are hoping people get out to buy cars again. What else would they do? Toyota sales are down just as much . . . I'm sure they are thinking the same thing.
In the mean time, their product line has undergone quite a transformation recently. The Edge, Flex, 2010 Fusion (best mpg in its class), 2011 Taurus, Mustang, and F150 are all very good products.
Its 2009 now, not 1999. Name a "bad decision" they've made recently? I know it's "cool" to bash the US automakers these days, but at least use some common sense first. - alexmensen, on 01/25/2009, -2/+70I drive a ford and I'm supporting a company that doesn't just go cry for free money.
This company is Ford Tough - LiquidSpark, on 01/25/2009, -0/+50Bravo to Ford. They've made a lot of questionable decisions in the past but hopefully this downturn will open their eyes.
- RoflCoptah, on 01/25/2009, -1/+43good to see that Ford can stand on its own, even a little bit. Unlike GM...
- inactive, on 01/25/2009, -0/+32They have basically collateralized their entire physical plant as well as their famous logo for private loans. This gives them an incentive to recover because if they don't get their act together the bank will take over, as opposed to free money from the government which rewards bad economic decisions and gives no incentive to change current practices.
- hugolp, on 01/25/2009, -0/+26Yes. I am from Europe, and own a Ford Focus, and I am very happy with it. Ford is the only US car manufacturer that I could consider buying from.
- Gloibin, on 01/25/2009, -0/+26It's incredible...Ford has sold Jaguar, Land Rover, Aston Martin, most of it's stake in Mazda, continues to dominate the European market, and is delivering the best Hybrid sedan on the US market in the Spring.
GM is still clinging to 3+ useless brands and won't have the Volt ready for at least another 2 years.
Chrysler keeps showing us EVs that they'll never make.
O_o - Nerys, on 01/25/2009, -6/+28Glad to hear it FORD keep it up. I have a few fords and am no more or less pleased than other brands (though I love my club wagon even though its giving me heartburn lately)
PLEASE FORD can YOU be the company to save us?
Release an under $13,000 full battery electric 4 seat car NO features NO amenities just air and heat. Nothing complex. centrally mounted electric motor to a drive shaft and all 100% off the shelf standard components after that.
as simple as you can possibly make it (and you can make battery electrics shockingly simple)
100 mile drop dead range (everything turned on max mass load) 150mile typical would be nice.
250,000 mile NIMH battery pack with a price tag under $4500 to replace
Your gonna need a little help since chevron got the patent for these NIMH batteries from GM
Let me know if your gonna do it and I will write every senator and congressman in office to get them to support squashing that patent. You do this and you will get a TON of support and we will FORCE them to comply!
You do that and you will CRUSH GM Chrysler Toyota etc.. you name it.
Especially GM I really want to see them die a slow horrible death for selling that patent to Chevron. - Gareth321, on 01/25/2009, -0/+21I feel like buying a Ford after this.
- 91z4me, on 01/25/2009, -0/+17No Ford was SMART by selling off Jag off to TATA before the whole economy went to crap. They also sold of AM and LR as well as mortgaging everything they could to totally re-do every car or truck program in the company. They are also retooling their North American plants to produce European models quickly, cheaply, and efficiently.
- smonty, on 01/26/2009, -0/+14Yes - I can tell you how Ford is doing in the rest of the word.
The company is profitable in Europe and in South America, and in November & December had the best-selling car in all of Europe - the Ford Fiesta. The Fiesta will be making its way to the U.S. in 2010.
But like all other automakers globally, the economic situation is making it extremely difficult to operate at the moment. Not one manufacturer is unaffected.

Ford Motor Company - fuzzybutton, on 01/25/2009, -1/+12Ford has one of the most advanced plants in the world where they can run 5 different models on one assembly line. If a Taurus comes along the robots know it. If an Escort is in the middle it knows what to do. They have companies making parts right on site. This is in Brazil and I believe Brazil said screw the oil companies years ago and started a program to make fuel from sugar cane. A 3 min. video: http://info.detnews.com/video/index.cfm?id=1189
No, they don't need a bailout, they bailed out years ago without our help. - inactive, on 01/25/2009, -2/+13I wouldn't drive that...Why would I want a car with no features? And electric is impossible to charge if you live in an apartment where you're dwelling is relatively far from your parking spot. A hybrid electric/gas (like how the Volt should have been) would be great though.
- chrisgeleven, on 01/25/2009, -1/+11I have to say, of the big 3, Ford seems to be making the right decisions. They began their restructuring a year or two ago and you are really starting to see the benefits of it. Hopefully the do last, as they seem to be making some very interesting cars (Ford Focus and the new hybrid Ford Fusion that is getting rave reviews).
- 91z4me, on 01/25/2009, -1/+11No. Ford said IF GM and Chrysler go under we MAY need loans should the supplier base collapse as well.
BIG difference. Reading comprehension is important my friend. - peterjmag, on 01/25/2009, -1/+9Good to hear that at least one of the Big 3 knows what they're doing.
- inactive, on 01/25/2009, -0/+8Like their F150 line, the best selling truck line in the world?
- phatfiend, on 01/25/2009, -1/+9umm, they are addressing these problems quite quickly. I believe they noticed the market changing a few years ago and it is quite likely they will be able to adapt using their own money due to at least a bit of good forsight. did you even listen to the hearings?
If you look outside the states, Ford's products are quite good and many of them will probablly be coming to north america soon. - inactive, on 01/25/2009, -0/+8What mess? They're essentially saying that they don't need help. While the other 2 of the big 3 do.
- 91z4me, on 01/25/2009, -1/+9centerblack,
Yeah lots of people compare a 30k+ BMW 1 series with a 14k Ford Focus for interior quality.
Quit swinging from BMW's nuts. - MutatedNantuko, on 01/25/2009, -2/+10I bought an '08 focus early this summer and I haven't had a single problem with it. I bought it because it is the best for it's price in small sedans according to Consumer Reports. Honestly a great car, and it has a kickass sound system, too.
- warriorscot, on 01/25/2009, -0/+8Ford has always been internationally popular. Mostly because unlike other US companies they don't sell US cars in the rest of the world. They essentially have two companies under the ford name one that makes cars for the rest of the world and one for the US. And while you get some crossover e.g. Mustangs in Europe and Focus in the US the cars originate in the separate markets and are notably very different.
- MachThree, on 01/25/2009, -0/+7My 2005 Explorer is still running great. It even gets 20 MPG on the highway (400 miles on 20 gallons), which is pretty darn good for a car of its size. People tend to associate Ford with General Motors and Chrysler, which produce cars of much less quality, in my opinion.
- stanzerv, on 01/25/2009, -2/+9Wow........Ford rocks with the statement!! lol
- PottSie2, on 01/25/2009, -1/+8Ford have been making some great cars lately, Mondeo, Focus and Territory (Australian SUV) are all very sexy. If they can bring the interior up to scratch and visual appeal, they'll get my money for my next car.
- 91z4me, on 01/25/2009, -0/+7Ford borrowed money from the private sector by mortgaging their own assets. I don't see the need to complain about this. It is how companies should be doing things.
- oveedrx, on 01/25/2009, -2/+9Ford did not make the neon
- 91z4me, on 01/25/2009, -0/+6God I am tired of typing this. Ford is asking for the line of credit ONLY IF Gm or Chrysler goes under. That would destroy the supplier base in North America. That is what would cause Ford to need that line of credit.
- skribeForti, on 01/25/2009, -0/+6The other reason why the other two don't do so well outside the US it's because they do stuff like this:
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=Dsotn05umoQ - warriorscot, on 01/25/2009, -1/+7@centerblack Ford actually make some of the most fuel efficient cars on the market and they make some very nice ones with high spec and plenty extras. Sure its mostly the European arm of the company that makes them but its still ford.
Ford Focus and Mondeo are still pretty much the standard cars in their class and everything gets compared next to them. And why not each has superb build quality and good fuel economy and go from bog standard with no extras to fully kitted out with all the bells and whistles and performance packs.
If I wanted a small economic car with a nice range of included extras and good performance I would buy a Ford(fusion or focus to be exact). - directive0, on 01/25/2009, -0/+6Precisely, I would wager the public's perception weighed heavily into their decisions to make this information public.
- schnikies79, on 01/25/2009, -2/+7You mean like my '78 Ranger with original engine and trans with a little over 200k and still running great?
The very definition of falling apart. - bdfariello, on 01/26/2009, -0/+5Holy *****, this guy works for Ford. Dugg.
- 91z4me, on 01/25/2009, -1/+6Top Gear is a British based show made for British consumers with a definite British slant to it. The British don't buy pickups and they don't have the same wants/needs as American buyers. Having Top Gear (a show that is slanted toward sports cars, especially high end ones) review an F150 is like having a 3 year old review a computer: they may get the basic idea of the product but they don't understand it enough to talk about it intelligently.
- 91z4me, on 01/25/2009, -0/+5Hey idiot. Ford is only asking for that line of credit should GM/Chrysler go under and take the supplier base with them. Which if that were to happen would also hurt EVERY manufacturer in the US.
- inactive, on 01/25/2009, -2/+7If the bank tries to take over, theeen they go for the free govt. money.
- dsmx, on 01/25/2009, -0/+4That sale of aston martin made no sense it was making money for ford. Still pro drive bought aston martin so it will be interesting to see what they come up with.
- aoou4444, on 01/25/2009, -0/+4You buy your cars with cash?
- etx313, on 01/25/2009, -0/+4I really want a Ford Flex they are f'ing nice! v6 twin turbo!
- peterinjapan, on 01/25/2009, -0/+4I could see that. If I were buying a car righ tnow, and if I weren't already a happy Mazda aficionado (which is partially owned by Ford, actually) I'd totally be all over Ford over the other two companies. GM, sorry but I can't think of anything I want there, although I bought the first Saturn in my prefecture here in Japan. Chrysler, just go away and leave us alone.
- richmomz, on 01/26/2009, -0/+4Should have bought a Mustang instead.
- ricksite, on 01/25/2009, -0/+3Subaru has a unique plant in Indiana that produces zero landfill waste.
http://www.edmunds.com/advice/buying/articles/1241 ... - inactive, on 01/25/2009, -1/+4Most companies overspend and then they cry with excuses.
Ford does what most us common folk do when we are broke- DEAL WITH IT.
like said above,
BUILT FORD TOUGH. - CharlesMay, on 01/25/2009, -1/+4My step dad retired from GM, I had always owned Fords (never new). When I was ready to purchase a new truck (2003), I went with a sierra due to the "A Buyer" discount I get from him. I have had more problems with this vehicle than any of the used Ford vehicles I've owned.
To top it off, when I bought my truck a coworker purchased the Silverado equivalent and he too has had numerous problems. I really don't think I could buy another GM product.
I've had the Mid-Shaft go out on this vehicle twice once under warranty, once out of warranty, and now it is being affected by the recent gauge cluster issue and I just lost my speedometer (of course GM has extended the warranty on this for this purpose). I drive 3 miles to work and 7 miles to a larger town for groceries and such. Approx 7000 miles / year is all I put on this vehicle so it's not over-worked. - inactive, on 01/25/2009, -0/+3PR goes a long way.
- alittleroy101, on 01/25/2009, -0/+3He has a point in that it's pretty much a new car. I own two Fords, and I will never by another one. I've spent many times the money I saved over a Tacoma on repairing the Ranger every year. My Exploder took an enormous amount of work too.
I don't know why everyone is all of a sudden sucking on Ford's nuts. - theOster, on 01/26/2009, -0/+2speaking of free money, has anyone seen that first $350b laying around?
- Snarfy, on 01/25/2009, -3/+5Because saving your money up to buy something is so ... un-american.
- reeds1999, on 01/25/2009, -0/+2Let GM and Chrysler go bankrupt. Ford can then scoop up any of their assets that have any value.
- linagee, on 01/25/2009, -1/+3Positive PR to Ford, Negative PR to any car companies that already took a handout. (*cough* GM *cough*)
