- DonJuanAussi, on 12/10/2008, -6/+176How about the fact that if the vast majority of top Chefs around the world are men, why do the advertisers always depict men as clumsy idiots in the kitchen? How about the stereotype that men can't handle changing nappies, or babies in general? How about the stereotype of men unable to get the interest of beautiful women unless they fix their body odor? The stereotype that men are always messy and that women always have to clean up after them?
This list has not gone into the negative male stereotypes portrayed by the media in news, comedies and dramas... That would be a very long list.
Feminists should get off their high horses and work toward equality instead of working toward feminine superiority. - amtel10, on 12/09/2008, -16/+158Sounds to me like the person who wrote that needs to loosen up, maybe try having sex with a light on in some position other than Missionary.
- voidvox0, on 12/09/2008, -4/+75don't get angry at the advertising agencies. it's not some conspiracy to keep women down. it's done because the results of focus groups and market studies proves that the majority of the target audience responds to these types of ads. it sells. clients perceive that it sells. i'm sure the creatives on these accounts wished they could have done something more creative or something different then the ***** they've been peddling for years but alas the truth is the majority of the public are idiots. don't blame advertising, blame the fact that we live in a world full of idiots.
- Bloodwine, on 12/10/2008, -3/+66This whole article is sexist, because they forgot to mention the #1 sexist thing in advertising today:
All men are apparently buffoons.
It's always some hapless guy (usually a husband or something along those lines) that is a total buffoon, but the smart, know-it-all woman saves the day and they all have a laugh at the guy. - ironhide, on 12/10/2008, -3/+62I'm very annoyed at the writer considering bondage "demeaning" Obviously they know nothing about the subculture.
- UncleCrapper, on 12/09/2008, -1/+51I suppose that advertising executives would say that equality is boring and doesn't engage your passions. Look at how men are depicted in advertising and sitcoms -- another example of blatant, entrenched sexism and something that should have been included on this list -- as simpering morons that can't do anything right, while their wives/girlfriends are perfect angels of beauty and light. Even if men are offended the ad is likely to stick in your mind. Ad mongers are well versed in using our own emotions against us.
- WendyThomas, on 12/09/2008, -5/+50The most mind-boggling part is that most of these products are supposed to appeal to women
- Octoman, on 12/10/2008, -13/+57I think the author needs to get ***** or something...
- xRand0mx, on 12/10/2008, -0/+37I thought this article would at least mention this. Instead it shows us ads that I've never even seen (some I believe are European ads) and they are all sexist to women. I'm not condoning advertising agencies making sexist ads towards women, although free market, but I think the massive majority of sexist ads these days are directed towards men.
How many times do we see the idiot father, idiot husband, idiot boy friend or just the plain idiot male. Or how about the thousands of ads I see everyday telling me that I'm not a man if I don't consume or use their product (what is being a man anyways?). Sick of all the double standards in our society. The sad part is it seems like nowadays it is completely acceptable to look down on men.
Sexism goes both ways people. - ConfirmedCynic, on 12/10/2008, -4/+39It doesn't surprise me that a feminist rag like the Huffington Post doesn't mention the most blatant sexist trend in advertising of all: the portrayal of men (especially fathers) as inept, child-like buffoons that are often corrected (or metaphorically castrated) even by their own little daughters.
- inactive, on 12/09/2008, -8/+41Well if it works, why bother fixing it? Maybe these products do appeal to women, as evidenced by high sales and the fact that advertisers continue to use these techniques.
- qwertyxuiop, on 12/10/2008, -6/+37What a ***** article
There is real sexism out there in advertising, but calling something a glorification of rape when it clearly is not just makes feminism look silly
and that "cumshot" example... come on....
actually all of the examples are pathetic
buried for degrading feminism by making it look stupid - GoKings, on 12/10/2008, -7/+36I don't know about this list, but I want more cumshots in advertising...
- PopcornDave, on 12/10/2008, -1/+29But that's not sexist because it's an article about how women are being oppressed through advertising. Didn't you get the memo? Men don't count.
The author of the article needs to venture outside her ivory tower and live in the real world where people don't give a ***** about this kind of malarkey. Something tells me that she majored in Woman's Studies in college. - Khanvalescent, on 12/10/2008, -1/+27I agree.
Our society seems to foster people becoming a self-identified, persecuted minority. - skintigh, on 12/10/2008, -3/+29OMG was that entire article a prank or a self-parody? Everything is not what it is, and it what it's not. Water in a photo is now "cum." Dramatic tango-like poses are "rape." A young woman in soft light is a "child" and a "slut."
The author of this article has some serious mental issues when it comes to sex. Apparently women are all helpless and hapless victims of men. They are forced to be paid large sums of money to pose in "degrading" positions in order for The Man to force other women to spend large sums of money on sexy shoes or cameras or whatever those ads were for. It must be terrible to be so helpless and incompetent... while simultaneously able to manipulate and control any man at will...
This reminds me of the lady who hated all men who looked at women, so to teach them a lesson she would run at them with a video camera screaming "how do you like it" and didn't understand why everyone thought she was psycho. She was just very territorial about her photons... - vizerei, on 12/10/2008, -1/+23Unfortunately the writer is the "stereotypical" fire and brimstone ignorant and self righteous feminist.
- Kersius, on 12/10/2008, -1/+23Can you imagine what would happen if men got together to promote mens rights? NOW would riot. Men are sexist, women stand up for themselves.
- DonMarin, on 12/10/2008, -1/+21These aren't very subtle examples.
What about the Progressive Car Insurance commercial in which the female customer is excited that the money she will save by going with Progressive will be enough to pay for a new pair of shoes. - MirrorminD, on 12/10/2008, -11/+31Wow it sounds like this girl just hates men and sex in general. Dunno how she got a gang rape out of a D&G pic of a girl and 4 guys. Pretty sad actually.
- wedges, on 12/10/2008, -1/+21lets not forget that EVERY husband or boyfriend in EVERY ad is a BUMBLING MORON.
- matthughes, on 12/10/2008, -7/+26beat me to the punch, amtel...uptight bitch will be an old maid with 12 cats.
- JonTheGoose, on 12/10/2008, -1/+19*Round of applause*
- ElDiablo6870, on 12/10/2008, -3/+21As written by a bitter, jealous feminazi.
- aurorous, on 12/10/2008, -0/+17This article is no different than those foxnews stories about "Moral Decay in America" that were thinly veiled excuses to show half naked women on the screen while they express their outrage about half naked women.
- inactive, on 12/10/2008, -7/+22Obviously, she thinks women don't have any sexual fantasies and must remain frigid ice maidens. I know that if I wouldn't have a problem getting 'raped' by 3 hot model chicks, there is a woman somewhere who wouldn't have a problem with getting 'raped' 3 hunky model guys.
- NixiePixel, on 12/10/2008, -3/+17Well, that may not appeal to all women, but it does appeal to some... ~.^
- Pedobear, on 12/10/2008, -2/+15I also agree.
The thing is, many feminists suffer from acute tunnel vision and only see the aspects of life that put women at a disadvantage. Having been among a number of feminists, it seems that the idea that men are over-empowered and over-entitled is a pervasive theme, creating a feeling of persecution. Advantages that women have over men are thus seen as inherently "positive" (i.e. combating the "patriarchy"), while the opposite is seen as inherently negative.
It's very annoying. - subliminalurge, on 12/10/2008, -0/+12Decent commercial, but it could use more facial cumshots.
- ironhide, on 12/10/2008, -0/+12Ironically, most "demeaned" women who are in to bondage are way more liberated than this nut.
- alais, on 12/10/2008, -6/+16Huffpo has a lot of nerve running a anti-sexism post. Buried for hypocrisy.
- cam0man, on 12/10/2008, -8/+18It's the same as the car ads that make trucks and sports car seem overtly chauvinistic....guys think it'll make them like that just like women think some of these products will make them attractive.
If you don't like the ad, don't look at it. This entire article is extremely exaggerated. You think that thumbnail reminds you of child porn? A girl in a wet shirt resembles a 'cum shot'? Give me a break, these ads wouldn't exist if the majority of consumers didn't like them. - vizerei, on 12/10/2008, -3/+12I buried you for your poor attempt at rebuking.
I grew up with 4 sisters, who are messy as hell. Have you ever looked at a men's bathroom versus a woman's bathroom?
Our father did most of the cleaning. My closest married friends are all much cleaner than their wives, the wives do clean, but only because the husband gets on them.
How about college....which I'm sure a lot of people here can attest (provided they actually went in the girl dorms instead of the SC Lab in their free time) to how utterly disgusting most women are when it comes to organization and cleanliness.
Sorry but it's not an accurate stereotype, not even close. It is just a mass delusion. - sousademiami, on 12/10/2008, -3/+12While I agree with the idea that people tend to be idiots. Just because someone is naturally responsive to an ad that preys on human instinct doesn't make one an idiot.
I can admit that while women may find these ads degrading, that doesn't change the fact that I find them arousing. Sorry, millions of years of evolution has programmed my brain to find half-naked women in sexual situations arousing, and that wins out over my 25 years of human social experience. - darladoon, on 12/10/2008, -1/+10of course they're sexist! that's what advertising is all about! you don't appeal to politically correct trends; you appeal to sex, sex and more sex.
these products were DESIGNED with sex in mind. they won't sell anything if they play it safe.
having said that, these products suck, and i would never buy them. - OverZealousHobo, on 12/10/2008, -0/+9Yeah, advertising uses sex to sell, which is not a new concept...
what about daytime television making men out to be barbarians...Everybody loves Raymond, King of Queens, The Simpsons...hell, I could go on for awhile...more women than men watch daytime television...hmmmm...
either way, society tends to perpetuate the idea that women are victims and that men are idiotic pigs...equality is a funny thing - there is six times more research for breast cancer, than prostate cancer...93% of the time the wife gets the kids in a divorce...a man's insurance is higher...a man is more likely to get thrown in prison or the death sentence, than a women (for the same circumstances)...it really just goes on but the point of the matter is that the gal writing the article probably doesn't give men (real men, not the ones in her advertising pictures) enough credit to see that advertising is there to target consumers through sex....because sex sells... - OliveStreet, on 12/10/2008, -1/+10The practice will stop the moment it doesn't sell products and services.
- Solarux, on 12/10/2008, -8/+17Hey, Alex Leo of Huffington Post...got something for you:
http://www.bitchmakemeasandwich.com/ - inactive, on 12/10/2008, -2/+10The only downside I've seen is whiny articles. Ads aren't nearly as annoying...
- Barackalypse, on 12/10/2008, -0/+8There is no such thing as equality because everyone has different levels of ability, the best you can do is equal protection under the law.
- Barackalypse, on 12/10/2008, -3/+11Its not sexist if its true.
- FLarsen, on 12/10/2008, -1/+9Can you give one reason to why it's immoral that isn't completely arbitrary?
- MacEnvy, on 12/10/2008, -4/+12And just exactly who are you to say what's immoral?
Degrading ... um, ok? No one's being forced to do it. I'm as liberal as they come, but this is PC *****. - egeo2000, on 12/10/2008, -3/+11I dunno about what the author wrote, but those pictures were pretty good. :-) Thank god my supervisors are at some sexual harassment class. I'm gonna go back to watching Jessica Biel strip now.
- Bloodwine, on 12/10/2008, -1/+9Don't you mean Womyn's Studies?
- Aadain, on 12/10/2008, -0/+7Don' t know why you were getting dug down Kersius. You hit the nail on the head. In the 60's, NOW was a great organization working for women's rights. Now, they seem more anti-male or extreme pro-woman. Pro-woman is not the same as equality.
- samoan27, on 12/10/2008, -3/+10I originally read sexiest (instead of sexist) and was not disappointed.
- notrdame919, on 12/10/2008, -1/+8"Feminists are going to work to fight for women, not men."
Exactly - they fight for women, not equality.
Kersius is spot-on. Society is ass backwards. - Vusys, on 12/10/2008, -0/+7...and I was hoping for something on the anti-male sexism in far too many modern adverts.
- endus, on 12/10/2008, -4/+11What's funny about these types of articles is that some (probably not all but some) of it is based on the interpretation of the viewer. It's like the Christian conservatives who see evil sex everywhere they look...even in the teletubbies...they betray their own perverted world view by doing so.
