- ScienceDoc, on 09/08/2008, -6/+40Don't fall for this oil company crap. They stole your entire paycheck and just handed you back a dollar. They do this with every quantum price increase.
- zyklon, on 09/09/2008, -2/+26If you think that the price of gas falling $0.05 to $4.11 is a good sign, the oil companies have won.
- phuzzy3d, on 09/09/2008, -1/+23Well It sure isn't going down as fast as it went up.
- kotrin, on 09/08/2008, -8/+29it's an election year...when whichever candidate gets into office--they will shoot right back up.
- theculchie1, on 09/09/2008, -1/+9Look at the trend. Oil was $140 a barrel. Now it looks to be dropping under $100 any day now.
Hurricane Ike is bearing down on offshore rigs, the market responds by dropping the price of oil by a dollar or so. The markets still think oil is over priced. Remember if anyone farted near an oil rig a few months ago the news would send oil higher by a dollar or two?
Now that the commodity speculators have taken their profits we are seeing oil returning to a more realistic price. - quomen, on 09/09/2008, -1/+8Don't get your hopes up, this market is as volatile as the substance (gasoline) itself.
- sloppychris, on 09/09/2008, -0/+7Summer is ending, people are driving less, the demand for gas is lower. This leads to a price drop. Just like last year, and every other year, even before the overall price increase during the 2000s. Supply and demand, as usual, still apply.
Or you can ignore Occam's razor without any evidence to the contrary. Either way. - miriv365, on 09/09/2008, -4/+10The oil companies have trained us. They went from $2 to $3, then we got all excited when it settled in at $2.50. Now its gone up to $4.00+ and again, we are excited that it is now at $3.50. They are Pavlov, we are the dogs....
- Logicexe, on 09/09/2008, -1/+7Do people still not see the ***** pattern? The price hits a low during the winter and a high during the summer. Obviously for that to work the price would have to rise as you go through the summer, then fall as you go through autumn towards winter.
This happens every single year. It's not the election, it's not the war in Iraq, it's not the Illuminati, it's not a trend it's just the normal month to month fluctuation we get every year.
Gas is still more expensive when you compare them to the same time last year. The price is still increasing overall. - zyklon, on 09/09/2008, -1/+7Kind of. I think it would be nice, but seeing as how I literally don't use my car except for to work and back but still pay $100 in gas a week, I'd love for the prices to go down...
- SiliconRain, on 09/09/2008, -9/+15Am I the only person that wished the prices would stay high so people continue to use their cars less?
- inactive, on 09/09/2008, -2/+7Agreed.
Too many people are happy with the falling prices.
This was another move to raise prices and make people happy about it.
Raise prices to amounts that make people drive less. Then lower prices until you see those drivers return to the roads.
It wasn't too long ago that we were still paying under $2.00/gallon. Now people are happy with $3.00-$3.40/gallon.
Suckers. - inactive, on 09/09/2008, -0/+5I hope that gas falls back to $1.00 a gallon and everyone who paid $25k for a used Prius kills themselves. Hey I can dream.
- Ne007, on 09/09/2008, -0/+5It's because I'm not buying it. I've ridden my motorcycle all summer long.
- frosted, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4This means absolutely nothing.
Look at the historic gas prices in the USA:
http://www.gasbuddy.com/gb_retail_price_chart.aspx ...
Note the trend, and the fact that at this time last year gas was around $2.77 a gallon.
This is NOT because of the politics, it's just the normal trend. In January gas will reach it's low for the year, in May June or July it hits it's peek. Look at the trend and you will see, gas is higher then it's ever been. - inactive, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4Less is always better, even if it's not the price we wished we would pay.
I'm still driving less, as I've rearranged my schedule to accommodate public transportation. However, now I can at least pay around 35-40 dollars when I fill once a month instead of 40-45 every week or so, which is always better for setting a budget. - oldgal, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4If Congress or the President really wanted the price to go down all they have to do is start talking about nationalizing the industry. Don't have to do it, just need to talk about it and maybe start drafting some legislation. The price would drop like a rock.
- thebaron2, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3I hope so. Gas prices don't just affect how much people drive their cars - it drives up the price of everything that requires transportation along some point of its life cycle.
All of your groceries that need to be transported - and even more for those packed in some sort of plastic bag or pouch. All forms of transportation that use gasoline become more expensive.
I don't see any reason why we can't continue to develop alternative energy plans and the infrastructure to deliver them against the backdrop of low gas prices. Everyone was ambivalent for a long time, but even if the price dropped to $2/gal there's always the potential of another unforeseen increase down the line. That alone should be enough motivation to continue alternative energy development. - Trevour, on 09/09/2008, -1/+4Tell that to the millions who have to commute every day. The real solutions lie in how quickly we can transition ourselves to gas-free autos. Mr. Fusion!!!
- dystra, on 09/09/2008, -1/+4oooooooh......8 days down to the bargain price of $3.40! we can go back to our old driving habits, FREEDOM!
- inactive, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3Most diggiots arnt old enough to remember last year.
- d3cyph3r1ng, on 09/09/2008, -1/+4or ***** you.
- skoles, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3I wasn't aware one could freebase stupid.
- xister, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3Actually, Iraq just signed a deal with the Chinese for 3bil.
http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=5 ... - JimW311, on 09/09/2008, -2/+4EXACTLY! Remember, Bush is in office and wants another Republican in. It's a fact that when gas prices fall, Republican's get more votes. :((
- Trevour, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2Hey I agree with you there - my day job is a gas-free, 5-minute commute on bicycle. But I also run my own business, which sometimes requires travel to different towns in the area. That includes transporting equipment. Cars aren't going anywhere, especially if future technologies become cleaner and more efficient.
- inactive, on 09/09/2008, -3/+5How the hell did this make it into the media?.....its good news!
- holmesfour, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2It's up to 3.95 in my town, and I live in Michigan.
- theculchie1, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2It never does. That goes for anything that is bought or sold.
People are more inclined to hold onto their paper losses for longer on the belief the market will turn in their favour. - secrity, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2It is a bit good, but it is not news. It would be news if unleaded regular went below $2 a gallon.
- ceramufary, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2No! Me too! But remember, some people are having trouble feeding their families because they have to spend so much on gasoline. :-/
- hwy9nightkid, on 09/09/2008, -2/+4shows how ***** crazy the republican base is to elect their only choice this Nov. yikes
- jonnyboy1544, on 09/09/2008, -1/+3Not to rain on your parade but this is the first time it's gone up past 4... it's not like this was a common trend.
The price always goes up during the summer driving months. Supply and demand is a bitch. - YoctoYotta, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2@svenjick
Great point, but many of those people are saying "I have the financial wealth to pay for all the gasoline I can get my hands on!" - inactive, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2gas was $1.13 (bay area,CA) when I started driving 7 years ago. 400% in seven years.
I could give a ***** less about 25 cents....... - stevo9er, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1What about the price of burritos, any word on that? A little relief for us non-(lazy/fat/stupid/car driving) Americans?
Ride a bike nerds. - sloppychris, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1Re: driving habits

As an aside, anecdotal evidence like what you happen to see or remember is unreliable. You're better off relying on evidence collected by scientists who know how to eliminate unforeseeable variables. - chourobin, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1they output 2.1 million barrels a day, and are about to reach their peak output that was before the Iraq war.
- cesig, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1Katrina dumped hundreds of thousands of gallons of oil into the gulf. That's how.
http://blog.skytruth.org/2007/12/hurricane-katrina ... - hwy9nightkid, on 09/10/2008, -0/+1@Xister, sweet!
- 5329546beer, on 09/09/2008, -4/+5Just in time to vote for big oil!!!
- floridiot2, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1I've noticed that people are driving more now that school has started. The freeways are cluttered.
- jonnyboy1544, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1Learn what? So you're saying the only way Americans will "learn" is to punish them with high prices and screw the economy...
That's not learning, but it's funny how much attention the environment gets when the cost of living goes up. We still need to get to work first and foremost! - phogasmic, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1Gas always goes down after the summer. Now that we think 3.50 is low next summer gas will be 5 something a gallon.
- armakaryk, on 09/09/2008, -1/+2come on guys, this happens every year, literally. they raise prices before memorial day to gouge people going on summer vacations, then after labor day they drop down again.
- inactive, on 09/09/2008, -3/+4Yes, because once you move out of your parents basement and start paying your own bills and driving to a real job you will see why.
Not to mention that it drives up the cost of EVERYTHING, from food to video games. Do you like paying more to get less? - truck87bp, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1We export 1,042,000 barrels a DAY according to the Central Intel agency. Whats up with that?
- DarkSideofMoon, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1Wait... what does your motorcycle run on?
- 5urr3al5am, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1Do you think that the media-hype had anything to do with the price going up? It's not a supply problem.. its a fear-based problem.. which also drives the market.
- gonetill5, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1umm... don't bet on it. they'll climb back up, and even more than they were. this is exactly how we got to over $4.00 gas any way. i'm still buying an EV as soon as possible. i mean even at 3.50 it's too high. i'm tired of throwing my money away. thank god for companies like goss132 for making an large EV, and with batteries i can afford. gas can kiss my ass.
